Random ringtone on usb plugin - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So this just started yesterday but whenever I plug in a usb to my phone weather it'd be for charging or PC it starts playing this stock sounding ringtone that I've never heard before and it doesn't stop! The only way to stop is to unplug and reboot (rebooting while plugged in doesn't do anything). Why is this happening? It just started yesterday out of the blue and I'm forced to keep my phone on mute. How do I solve this? I'm pretty sure I haven't downloaded anything or tinkered with it at all so there shouldn't be anything that changed since say 3 days ago. So what in the world is doing this!? Also I am on GOLDENEYE ROM and I feel like it's giving me lots of issues as of late so if anyone could recommend a better TW-based rom (cuz of stupid gear) for my Canadian S4 (I337m) that'd be greatly appreciated as well so I can just ditch this broken ROM and get a brand new set up going

Soory but i think you have to perform a Full Wipe. Install new Rom and test it.

Same thing happened to me. I have s rooted S4 but no custom rom installed. I plugged my phone into my PC and the ring tone called Over the horizon started playing and a couldn't stop it unless I rebooted my phone. I then plugged it into just a wall charger and the same thing happened again. I'm running 4.4.2 build number is i337UCUFNB1. I rooted my phone with towelroot a few months back and had no problems until today.

Yah that's why I'm leaning towards getting a new ROM however full wipe doesn't solve the issue of why it is happening and how to fix it (other than full wipe)

What would that do? I haven't ran a stock rom since day 2 I had my s4. The problem is with the rom I currently have which is (GOLDENEYE) and it's playing Over the horizon every time I plug in a usb. I want to fix that. Not go to stock

Yes i know but your device have any errors. That means you must to perform a wipe data factory reset and install the newest Stock ROM XXUGNG8. After that i'm sure your Problem is solved.
If your Problem is solved after this steps you can reinstall any Custom ROM you want

Do you use Gravity Box?
The update to version 3.3.2 caused this kind of issue. In this case just do the update to 3.3.3 there the bug is fixed

Gingerbread 2.3 problems.

Hi
Sorry if this has been cleared up in another thread, but I cannot find the answer to this problem.
I am running Gingerbread 2.3 (Cynogen) on my phone via the file manager method. Everything was fine until one day after I booted back into Android after a normal soft reset - The keyboard would keep hitting "Q" no matter what I pressed. I could not open The browser as I would get an error message.
I thought maybe it was the extended battery I was using, so I reformatted my sd card, re booted gingerbread and everything was back to normal.
Then last week it happened again. I dont remember installing anything new. It is also not the build Im sure, because this did happen a while ago on another Cynogen mod I used.
I am pulling my hair out wondering what to do. There is no point in reinstalling it because it will happen at a seemingly random time again.
Does anyone have any clue or suggestions on how to fix this??
Thanks

Maybe it's a bug in the ROM
Try different rom and see if this problem still persists, if yes, maybe a hardware problem related issue
Cheers
There are a few roms with 100% support for the official extended batteries(s). Your best bet is to go with one of them.

Phone does not start after reboot on jamal2367 ROM, S4 GE Final-R4

Hi all,
I have this annoying issue with [AOSP] Official 4.4.2 - S4 Google Edition - Final-R4 from jamal2367; current baseband installed XXUFNA1.
Problem:
When the phone loses connection, it dies. Then there is no way I can turn it on.
if unplugged from the power: it starts to boot and it dies again, sometimes at the "samsung boot text", sometimes a bit ahead, but it does not go further than the animated logo with 4 coloured bouncing balls (it does not matter how many time I try to restart the phone)
If plugged: it survives the first part of the boot most of the time, but it loops into the animated logo with the 4 coloured bouncing balls and the phone does not start.
Solution:
Every time I have to re-install Android, by:
- deleting Dalvik, Data, System, Cache.
- Install the ROM
- Apply a factory reset
At this point, if connected to the plug, the phone starts, but I have to go through the manual installation process.
This is a bit annoying I have to admin, anyone with this kind of issue, or am I the only one?
A few more info:
Phone was working great with jamal2367 4.3 (don't remember the baseband)
After 4.4 was out I installed it, but it was booting every 5 minutes or so, I decided then to go back to 4.3.
When I went back to 4.3, baseband was changed, but I kept the hold one.
Phone started to have random reboots as well, but once every 3-4 days, so I was ok with it.
4.4 releases were progressing so, after a while I decided to put it back.
I had the problem described above with previous (recent) baseband (like ml6and mj6).
Now I have the latest, but I have got the problem anyway.
A wild guess:
The phone now charges very quickly, I am wondering if the percentage that I see is realistic. Maybe it runs out of battery, which it could explain why the phone dies on reboots, but it does not explain why it loops once plugged in and why it does not turn off normally instead of just dying with a blink of an eye.
mmm that should not be the reason
Another wild guess:
I couldn't target a specific application. Sometimes it dies using fb, sometimes maps, sometimes hangout, sometimes a after a long phone call. The first two have "location" active, but I don't think that the last two are using it.
mmm that should not be the reason either.
A consideration:
I have noticed that once Android is installed, the phone signal is quite good, but then it goes down to one or two lines only. Most of the time I have one line only (in my area) and when it disappear, 6 times out of 7 it dies.
Thanks in advance.

did you try battery calibration?
also format everything in recovery before flashing, that should do the trick..
or maybe try another rom,if you still have issues then you may have to take it to Samsung care

Well, when I delete Dalvik, Data, System and Cache, I do it once I am inside _teamwin recovery_, I can also think about another ROM, but the one from jamal2367 is quite popular and I find it weird that no one else have the same issue.
Thanks for your reply though.

Same problem here...
I fixed it by flashing the stock image from samsung, and start all over again with cf_root and recovery. I use CWM, but that dont matter I think.
Loving my 4.4.2 Rom by Danvdh atm!

mmm there must be some way. With the latest R1.1 I cannot even answer a phone call, with Ktoonsez's Kernel, with Alucard's Kernel no button works.
:-O
mmm also installing 4.3 back gives me random reboots. I am wondering if it could a wrong baseband.
it worked perfect for me for some hours. when i deactivated some bloatwares (g. earth, g. music, ...) it crashed and stucks in a loop reboot & crash at googke logo. swipe cache or wait some minutes don`t change anything.
i tried everything, now i have no idea what to do
I installed CyanogenMod and it is more stable. However it cannot do what is supposed to do, make and receives phone calls.
I wonder if it is a baseband issue, now.

Same issue if I put back Jamal [AOSP] Official 4.4.2 - S4 Google Edition - Final-R1.1,mmm, maybe the kernel....
The last thing I can say about it is that also all the sounds are gone. I cannot reproduce any sounds, notifications, alarm etc., it does not work on videos either.

I9505 random reboots

Hi! I recently updated my i9505 to the xugng8 firmware via kies. Ever since, my phone has been randomly rebooting itself. The reboots are quick enough, so it doesn't look like the phone is completely rebooting, more like a half reboot. I have tried formating, but that didn't help. I have the phone rooted but using stock firmware.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks

Remove all Knox related apps via "Titanium Backup" and you are good to go. :good:
there is also an xposed module that deals with these random reboots, but personally i think the best way is to revert to an earlier firmware. fnb8 is rock solid.
I have just upgraded my firmware to NG8 (UK) and my phone reboots randomly, no matter what I am doing. After receiving a call, using gmaps, etc..
I will try the suggested solution with removing the knox sh*t and report back.

Yes, same problem here exactly. Any solution to fix this WITHOUT ROOT or reverting back to xxufnb9 ?
I found that uninstalling all knox apps and resetting a private app fixed my problem. I have been restart free for the last 2 days! I suggest using BBS to find out what app is causing wakes and reset them.

yup same here after reading this thread and removing all knox crap.... phone has not had a self reboot reboot for the day...
Revert
Had to reflash the old XXUFNB9, it was useless with all those restarts. Downgrade went okey, however need to delete the Media Storage `s cache because it will keep crashing. Testing now if it solved the problem.
Update 1: after 2 hours later no restart so far..
I recommend this solution who doesn`t want to loose everything and risking if a factory reset will solve this issue. There is a problem with the KNOX 2.0 update (XXUGNG8) ...
Update 2: Link for the firmware, for whoever choose to do this way: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=31852
Ok, just a quick update, I have used googlemaps for 2 hours, and tomtom navigator for 1 hour on my S4, made and received a few calls without issue. No REBOOTS.. I think it was definitely the knox crap...

Stabil for 3 hours or 2 days - well that's for sure great ....
You both must be joking - take older NB8 and you can have an uptime of > 1 month without any problem,
All newer version are worse -
As s.o. mentioned, there is an Xposed Modul made by Thomas Hofmann that tries to solve this. This is not a Knox problem but seems to be in AOSP itself - although might mainly be triggered by Knox 2.0 (NB8 is still Knox 1.0). In general situation goes worse the more processes are started, i.e. with heavy load. It is said to happen not only with S4 but e.g. also with N3.
As Thomas Hofmann stated: "I figured out that actually the system server process crashed due to an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException"
If you want to know details plz have a look at Thomas's blog. With his modul he mainly catches a faulty parameter value that would otherwise cause a certain method to crash. As a result he manages to avoid the reboot but of course the real problem goes deeper, so to fix this for real Google / Samsung are needed.
=> I want a 4.4.4 rom with towelroot fixed, without those ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsExceptions and as solid as NB8 - but I doubt Samsung is able or willing to do this.
I am using STOCK i9505 4.4.2 ROM which is rooted. I don't use towelroot because I don't have to. I also try to stay away from premade Roms and Kernels beause i don't have time to test and tinker with eveything.
After a few days of removing knoxcrap, I can conclude, that it is the issue with my phone. My i9505 is now working perfectly......
Have to agree with you. Since removing all the knox stuff, Haven't had a reboot since! Been over a week now at this stage!

Yes, many think this to be a nice 'feature' to get root, but that rediculous. Towelroot (plus the older Exynos bug - but that was Samsung specific) is the biggest bug in Android since many years. Using a kernel that is not hardened against this (this unfortunately includes the otherwise almost perfect NB8 rom) could mean you couldn't be save anymore from someone taking over your phone unnoticed using root authorization.

As said those reboots most certaintly are caused by a bug in AOSP code itself - but in fact they seem to be mainly triggered by Knox 2.0. Otherwise a lot more phones other than S4 or N3 should be involved.
As we will never know fpr sure if and when Google/Samsung will solve the real reason of this problem and "removing" Knox 2.0 seems to help, it would be very nice of you (juzzy16, nm8, sneazy) to perhaps add another comment in 2-3 weeks about reboot behaviour again including the rom version you are using and what exactly of Knox you had removed.:good:

SM-G901F WiFi Pemanently Switch Off

Hi All
I have an issue with my S5 Plus (G901F) a few days ago I rooted, TWRP and installed the stable MM ROM from Tkkg1994 and have been happily using my phone. This morning while I was opening the Gmail app the device rebooted and when it came back up I noticed WiFi was not on. Pressing the quick menu WiFi button turns it green for a second before going back to disabled. Likewise going to into settings - WFi and using the slider does not work either, it just goes back to off.
So far, I have wiped ART/Dalvik, reflashed BL and Modem, factory reset. Wiped the whole device and redid everything including diffrerent ROM's on the same BL/Modem (CPE1) and have the same result.
Everything else works, just not WiFi, I should also add I have tried with and without the SD card and disabling/enabling other radios (GPS/BT) in different combos has not worked either.
Has anyone come across this and can they suggest next steps?
I'm currently downloading the stock ROM that came with my phone to see if that helps.
Cheers
Stock ROM did not help.
Did you find solution? I have recently started to have same issue with same device.

Probably not. The S5 seems to suffer a lot by such issues. I bought mine 3 months ago in a shop. It worked for about 2 months very well. Then all of the sudden it became hot in my pocket so i had to quickly remove the battery. After this the device suffered by ocessional reboots. Nothing helped. Even trying to reflash the stock firmware by trying several Pit´s.
Finally got a replacement as obviously either the RAM or the CPU got defective. The other phone lasted for one week as the wifi module got defective there. Nothing helped either. Now it´s my 3th S5. This weekend my flashlight and camera stopped working. Fortunally got this fixed by reflashing the stock firmware.
Honestly I like the phone but it seems to be quite buggy. Never got such problems with my old S4 and am thinking about going back to the older device.

This sounds like the fault that numerous people are having, phone gets to a certain age and then just starts breaking. Seems only a new motherboard actually fixes it.
