I bought my used S4 and had problems with network. did a few things and didnt solve problem.
In my country (Bosnia and Herzegovina) 3g network isnt available everywhere, and on places where signal is low i am loosing my network..
In past few days i did and tryed next:
- Rooted
- recovery installed
- installed slimKAT 4.4 and gapps
- installed new baseband
- installed app Network from Play store and set my network to GSM auto (PRL)
- tryed typing secret codes to enter networs setups *#*#4636#*#*
and nothing solved my problem to enable 2g network...
When i am using 3g in a place which has good coverage of 3g network everything is fine, no drops... great...
When i maunaly set my network to 2g i lose network nothing happens, emergency calls only...
How to enable 2g?? installing new baseband? which one supports 2g on S4?
Solution
After a while it proved that problem is with the base band on the motherboard.
Removed hardware part of the base band , and put another one... it was a bit difficult because from the other side of the motherboard is ROM and because of the heat it removed also, so it had to be glued again.
After a while i installed again SLIMKAT and problems continued.. Phone froze, wasnt able to call because ACTIVITY PHONE ISNT RESPONDING, and it froze the phone every few calls, and it had to be rebooted, even that didnt helped sometimes, so batery had to go out.
Wiped Cash Partition, nothing happened, Wiped Cash and Dalwik, nothing happened...
Found somewhere that CONTACT SYNC and Facebook Contact sync disableing will help and guess what, it did...
Disabled all Contact Sync and for now everything is ok...

Hi, i have problems with random reboots its really annoying.
Some roboots arent random - when i recieve/send sms phone reboots almost everytime or when someone calls me its the same - reboot.
Any fix for this?
Thx
I have Defy+ (MB526), 2.3.6 android, 2.6.32.9-gbdd614e kernel, stock ROM
try wipe or flash other sbf that you can flash
Don't flash anything, if it persists after a wipe, send it back

Someone on this forum reported rebooting issues caused by a slightly shorter than spec battery (actually a few people as I recall). When the phone was moved it often rebooted and the fix was to add a single piece of electrical tape to the end opposite contacts. May be worth a try.
Switch to 2g and mobile data off then see if it reboots.
Might be this-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21237004#post21237004
Ok, thanks for the answers, flashing doesnt work Ive tried it many times..
Ive just tried 2G and electrical tape, hope it will work
A few causes might possibly be the answer.
1) firstly confirmed the rom by playing the overclock settings. Some rom having too low on voltage or frequency setting. Or the rom itself is not stable. Flashing another rom is only way to confimed this.
2) Battery might have factory defect, use battery monitor widget to monitor the voltages/current of the battery consumption. change battery(borrow from friend) to see if the reboot still happen.
3) Check battery connection on the phone. Make sure no loose around it.
4) If all the above still causes the random reboots. you can return it back to the shop to repair the handset.
seems switching to 2G helped, no reboot since switch, thanks
This is the same problem I had with my Defy+
It used to reboot randomly for no reason even when siting on a desk doing nothing
all of a sudden i would hear a notification to say the sd card was loaded informing me it was rebooted.
When it does decide to reboot it can do up to 4 or 5 reboots continuously
I sent it back and got a new one.
The new one does the same thing but very rarely
maybe once every month or 2 months
I have posted about this on the Motorola Forums and There are other people with the exact same problem as us.
One of them mentioned they had to send their phone bak to Motorola and they replaced the main board and will get back to say how it went.
But since then no answer and Motorola changed their forums

Can you confirm if it's 2G or tape?
I purchased Defy+ 20 days ago with exactly same configuration as the one described in the beginning of this thread. Phone reboots at random when I am in the middle of conversation, or while accessing data through mobile network or while present in areas with extremely low single. I tried using a new SIM, checked loose ends (if any) of the battery i.e. stuck a 1 layer of tape on one end, also switched to 2G. The phone continues to reboot especially when I access internet on mobile network, and also booted once while I am in a call.
Unfortunately the customer service in India (any company) would be pathetic so I'm not hopeful in having Motorola fix the problem if I take the piece to their support centers...
Narasimha
Narashima,
I have heard of Defy going crazy when trying to access data in an area where the data signal is weak and goes in and out. Can you confirm you are getting reboots if you turn data OFF? Not sure how your phone is configured, but I mean even cut off 2G.
HI ALL, Im pretty new here. after so many tries finally i was able to install cm7.1 on my defy. but im facing some issues. before the installation i forgot to take a back up of the existing ROM so if i have to go back to the previous ROM how to do that? and also there is no network coverage after the installation. please please anybody help!!!!!!
Have a vibrant myself but I'm helping a buddy get cm7 on his defy and after flashing didn't have a network signal. I looked at the cm7 install guide and it referenced a defy base band switcher app for better coverage. Had him try that and he got his data connection back. Might want to look into it or read the guide.

If your previous ROM was stock that came with your phone, flash the corresponding SBF file from the sticky on the Dev section to go back to stock. If it was some other custom ROM, wipe data/factory reset in CWM and flash the old ROM. Make backup of your apps using Titanium Backup if you want.
For CM7 network issues, choose the correct baseband from Defy Baseband Switcher. For India, pick anything that is 900/2100MHz...
Also, make sure you have read as many guides and First Posts on important threads as you can. Here is a collection of good threads you can read for these questions, and more that you might get later:

Hello! Noob here as well.
I installed CM7.1 stable on my Defy (running 2.2.2 foryo) 2 days ago.
All went well, except that network connection is lost after a couple of minutes after boot. Sometimes it takes an hour or two but I still end up with no connection.
I've googled everything about it in the last days. I played with the Baseband Switcher and although most options in the BB Switcher work right after a reboot, it still looses the signal after a couple of minutes.
One thing I noticed, when the signal is lost, trying to set the "Airplane mode" will fail. If trying to set Airplane ON - the notification icon will not replace the signal icon and will also be unable to set Airplane OFF (since it didn't finish turning ON).
I also noticed that if I force stop the "Dialer" system app, then the Airplane notification ico shows up, but still there's no way to turn it OFF (it's disabled in the menu). After a reboot Airplane can be set OFF and everything works for another small period of time (..until baseband crashes again?).
Hope it makes some sense. I'm quite sure this is not an operator issue or hardware related, since my Defy worked just fine before CM7.1
Also, I am located in Romania, operator is Orange.

I have the same issue, except that it is much rarer (ranging from every other day, to even a month between such incidents). It can also be triggered sometimes when I turn off Wi-Fi and the device tries to regain mobile data connection (not sure if it matters, but I set the network mode to 2G on my phone). The battery drain is increased if this occurs without the user noticing - the phone seems to search in vain for the signal.
Using the latest SEA baseband on M1 (Singapore).

I get this problem too. Happens every so often when I'm at work. I've always put it down to a bad signal where I work but as I always turn the wifi of before leaving home it could be down to that. If anyone has any solutions it would be great
Ok, a little update on this:
At the office now, further playing with the Baseband Switcher, I ended up selecting "Italia RT 2.51.1" which has the same 900/2100 freq that my operator requires and it seems to work. Even getting 3G.
If "2.51.1" is some sort of protocol version, then all the other options I've tried were either 4.x or 3.x or even 2.21.x ..and none of them worked for more then 30 minutes.
Also, not sure if signal strength has something to do with this because I did a test, going to the basement of my office in order to loose signal, then back up and it worked - got the signal back, without reboot or anything.
Also, I would really appreciate if someone could explain in a few words what those version numbers mean (ex: "Italia RT 2.51.1"), as I know nothing about gsm bands and protocols.
UPDATE: Back home, lost signal again, after a whole day without any problems. Funny.
UPDATE 2:
So after much google searching and trying literally every option in the Baseband Switcher, I switched my SIM card with a friend's SIM and guess what.. IT WORKED! Even more, when I inserted my original SIM into the other phone after a few minutes it lost signal, too! It was a faulty SIM, that has just started to "die".
Conclusion:
- Keep playing with that Baseband Switcher until you get something that works for you.
-Make sure your SIM is working properly in other phones, otherwise ask your operator to replace it.
Thanks and hope this helps.

Not really. As long as you have a working Baseband selected (with correct frequencies) I don't think it matters.
But overall CM7.1 has better battery efficiency then stock ROMs, or at least that's what I felt.
update:
Well, I had a play with the baseband switcher, realising i was on 'international'. I switched to uk t-mobile and from there it seemed to work much better. A slight blip at work today (think it's a bit of a signal black-spot though) but restarted and it seems fine again. I've also just realised it's gone 37hrs since its last charge too
Strangely my other problem, the backlighting on the soft-keys not working, fixed itself at the same time. dunno if these two things are linked or not?
i use the CEE one.
Hi, im having some issues with my signal on my N4...it randomly started a few days ago. This is what it happens:
While my N4 shows to be conected to my 2G / 3G network, sometimes (very frequent now) it totally drops the conection, the signal triangle seems empty, and going into airplane mode and coming back wont fix it, and when i log into the *#*#4636#*#* menu, it shows "Unknow" on a few options even on the preferred conection type, and i cannot choose any option there because it will go back into Unknow. The only solution is rebooting my N4, but this is just a temp solution because the problem shows up again not too long after its ON.
I have seen that if im constantly sending and recieving data, it keeps it conected longer, like when streaming a video. This problem started to occur while i was in baseband .48 with stock 4.2.2 rooted/unlocked. I did a complete wipe, and reinstalled 4.2.2 stock, but this time with .54 baseband, and the problem persist.
its been hard for me to find old posts about this problem in particular, seen other people posting about alike problems, even losing the imei number, but that doesnt happens to me, i still can see my imei number on *#*#4636#*#* even when everything else there shows unknow. I will attach an screenshot, its not in english, but i think you guys can get the idea.
details: My N4 didnt drop or anything, i already tried removing the simcard to check it, so i have no idea what to do now. I appreciate any help

Im in Norway with Telenor subscription. When my Edge+ is LTE/3G/2G (auto connect) Im experiencing several issues:
1. During phonecalls:
- Several times during a call, I can hear the other party, but they can not hear me for several seconds
- The sound become "static", and the phonecall ends.
2. During browsing:
- Page never loads
I cant find any system in these problems, they can happen in places with good reception, or it can be during driving (handsfree).
But all these issues disappear if I set the phone in 2G only, then everything is working perfectly.
What I've tried:
- Reset APN
- Enter APN manually
Any suggestions?
I'm in Norway too but with NetCom. I've used my wife's Telenor SIM card in my Edge+ a few times, not really noticed any difference except for slightly worse sound during calls. Har du ringt Telenor?
I have the same problem. Are you rooted by any chance and have recently installed viper4android?

Hmm... I'm rooted and have Viper. Are you locked to Telenor? If not, try and loan a Netcom/Djuice/Chess/whatever SIM card and test - at least then you should definitely know if it's a device problem or a Telenor problem.
What's your signal strength (Settings>About phone>SIM card status)?

I'm not locked, so I will try a simcard from a different operator. When I have auto connect (LTE, 3g 2g) its constantly shifting between H and H+.
Where I'm now, the signal strengt is stable on -51 dBm 31 asu (Mobile network type EDGE).
Switching to (LTE, 3G, 2G) its -65 dBm 24 asu (Mobile network type LTE)
I can confirm having the same issue #2 as OP in Sweden with Halebop as my carrier, but I only got it once and since then there has been several security updates so I though this issue was one of the things fixed (thanks Samsung for not supplying a proper changelog)
I've just tried with two Telenor SIM cards from my wife and son - both work fine. I'd contact Telenor again and ask for real help... Their customer service is dreadful, that's why I switched to NetCom. Lykke til?

I sometimes have the same problem. Called my service provider (Telenor) today. They are going to send me a new SIM-car, going to se if thats help, and Im going to test with anoter service providers SIM-card
Got the new SIM-card last week.. Same problem, people people can't hear me for 3-10 seconds several times during a phonecall. And data seems to "hang" from time to time. Tried a full factory reset this weekend, so are going to test more next week. And then try a Netcom SIM-card

Just to recap
I returned the phone, and I just got an email from the repairs workshop saying it was a warranty. I dont know if I get a new phone, or if they have repaired the old one.
update: got an email from repairs workshop. They did a network calibration and "reinstalled software". After that they tested the phone OK. I think I will get the phone this week.

Same problem here.
In general, the problem is not with the sim card neither phone hardware. The problem usually is with any app that we have installed. To ensure this, switch on the phone in SAFE MODE ( safe mode temporally turns off all user-installed apps). To do that:
1. Switch off the phone
2. Wait at least 1 minute
3.Press and hold volume down button AND the power button
4.Once screen lights up, you can release power button but you should NOT release the volume down button
5. Hold the volume down button until you get the lock screen
You will notice there is a Safe mode icon in bottom left of the lock screen.
Now try to do some phone calls and accurate if the phone call sound is ok. If so, you must uninstall all your apps and discover which one is making this problem

Are you talking seriously?? First of all, I think that finding out that the problem isn't neither from sim card or hardware, is a great new, and now you are asking which app YOU have installed is the problematic?! Lol ok, I suppose to believe you're naïve and I can help a bit...
It is not necessarily only one or the same app for both. Sometimes can be one in conflict with another also installed, one in conflict with the specific firmware of each one or one of several app's with low maturity (you can check it in Google play). I can give you an idea: for instance, periscope app is very problematic in android. But there are a lot of a lot problematic app's. So, as they are so much, there is only a solution if you don't have an idea: uninstall all of them ( phone hard reset preferably) and after this, install one by one manually (not restore any backup cause the errors come again). After each app installation, make some calls to check any call sound problem. When you notice the problem in call sound, the cause is in the last app that you've installed immediately before this. For next time, check with attention after installing any app if any problem appear and never install several app's in the same time to have time to notice problems in a narrow way...
Anyway, you can write here your conclusions
voilà
Hey, so 9 months ago I had the same issue that probably has a different cause now. Back then, I used to get the emergency calls only error and my efs was corrupted because of flashing CM13). I fixed it by restoring the nv_data backup I took. Now, I get the same **** all over again, except this time; I DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. NADA. ZILCH. The phone went off on it's own, along with the very ability that classified it as a phone.
The IMEI number hasn't changed at all. I mean why would it, I did nothing that could cause this. Flashing new roms doesn't fix this, and neither does that mystical voodoo **** (reinserting the sim-card so many times that you see gold contacts in your sleep). Oh, and I lost the SD card with the original backups on it.
Whenever I try to connect to a carrier by the network operators screen, it just times out. So is there anyway I can fix this? Or at least PINPOINT the problem so I can fix it?
Oh, and there's a thing going with the IR blaster too. It's dead. How would I go about changing the blaster out? It doesn't seem openable like the S4 I had was (metal frame).
Bump
bump once again
Oh come on, nobody has a clue?
Hi @Peontikos_Desmos, actually I have the same problem as you. I have a Korean note 4 n916k and since 1 month I have this strange problem too. I tried everything I know, reflashing original roms from Samsung(android 5.0.1, 5.1.1, 6.0.1), many custom roms ..., ... No way, no solution. The only thing that I tried to make my phone working as phone is just put the network mode in setting to 2G, not 3G, nor 4G, just 2G. With 2G only as network mode, the emergency calls only disappeared BUT now I can't connect to 3G and 4G anymore. Please please help us guys.
