[Q] Problem with Samsung Flip Cover - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello people, one question.
Recently I went to an Argentinian operator shop to buy a Samsung flip cover, for my galaxy s5 g900H variant. I replaced the back case for it, but, for my surprise, it didn't work. Sad, i went to another shop with the hope that it would work, but it didn't.
The s-view options doesn't appear on the accesories menu neither. And a man that was at the shop, said that I had to "scan" for the cover... is that true? or i had the bad luck that they gave me a disfunctional phone?
Also I saw that... when the phone is in stand by, the battery remains with the same percentage for hours, but when i start to use it, it drops 3-4% every 20 minutes.. is a hardware problem?
Thanks, Hernan.
PD: Sorry for my bad english, I am Argentinian.

Either there is a problem with the phone or flipcover or maybe its not a genuine S5, i have a flipcover too and it shows all the options it is supposed too.
Install CPU-Z or Phone Info from Play to identify the phone and post a screenshot(s) here.

Everything seems normal with cpu-z. The manufacturer, the model... Everything
Also here in argentina, the flip cover has no contacts, is that normal?

Is it an S-view cover? It should have a small microchip with 2 copper contacts in the top-right corner inside the rubber waterproofing.

Here is a pic https://www.dropbox.com/s/pmt0mlp7j1tkrdh/2014-08-18 16.02.03.jpg.

Well... The one that is sold here has not contacts. Maybe is that the problem? I saw a s4 with no contacts on its flip cover and worked fine... Also. About the battery problem, what could be the cause?

Probably a or several apps beeing busy in the background. Install BetterBatteryStatts to see what the biggest power consumers are.

I believe the S4 one is magnetised. The S5 version isn't, which means the cover doesn't always close fully. At least I experience that.
Instead, the S5 requires 2 pins to be shorted underneath.
As for the battery: it could be a software issue, or it could be that your phone isn't suffering from any wakelocks or partial wakelocks and your phone is deep sleeping. Also the Exynos is Quadcore; each core is slower than a single Qualcomm version - but if your phone is only using 1 core, the Exynos will have better battery life in that situation.

HTC Desire HD Screen Issue

This is my mates HTC Desire HD, he keeps it in an Official HTC case which covers the full screen and is very careful with it.
A mark has appeared on the middle of the screen which as you can see in the video is really annoying. He has not dropped it, nor hit it with anything.
Anyone got any ideas, or have had the same problem??
Here is a very small video which demonstrates the issue that I placed on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTtFHV2IdNA
Looks like he has either sat on it or had soemthing heavy pressing on the center of the screen. Either way it looks as if the LCD layer is sitting too close to the digitiser and even the slightest pressure on the screen causes that distortion.
I'm not aware of a fix other than a new digitiser maybe.
Contact the dealer. Maybe you're friend can get an replacement (Y)
Update... turns out over the weekend my mate took out the extended battery (he had to use tweezers to get it out!).
He had purchased from an Ebay seller from a UK seller (not an official HTC battery though). It was a 1600mah battery.
The issue went instantly.
Looking at the 1600mah battery, its curved!
So beware everyone, get an official battery! Or risk screwing up your touchscreen!
Thats interesting . First time I have heard a battery casuing screen problems.

I have yet to read a successful hi-cap battery story... makes me wonder whether HTC has ensured the H/W cant use anything beyond the specs.

TS said that the battery was curved so it was prolly pushing against the inside of the phone onto the panel
Hi just joined as its my phone in question
The battery has bulged very slightly in the middle so that if you placed it on a flat surface either way up you can rock it in any direction. I reckon its approx 2mm thicker on either side in the middle than at the edge
Signs were there over the past few weeks as it wasn't lasting as long on each charge and no-where near as long as the original HTC HD battery which is now back in the phone.
As to the High capacity one its a generic battery i.e. no mfr markings on the black and white label
Details say
"Replacement for HTC Desire HD" on two lines in top left corner
"Li-on 3.7V" in top right
"3.7VDC 1600mAh" below that and CE logo next to that
You will find the battery sold at lots of places online (both UK and international) as the picture from the UK seller I bought it from was by no means unique.
You better buy a second original battery from HTC.
5 mins ago i read about buying a nonHTC battery with higher capacity and I nearly ordered it. Good thind I found this thread.
Thank you

Possible solution to GPS problem on Nexus S

Hi,
i've tried just about anything to improve GPS singal on my Nexus S, i was so desperate i even thinked about selling it. But by accident i've found something interesting.
When you remove battery cover signal from GPS is really good, usable even indoors 1-2 meters from window. When you put cover back - it suddenly drops. Here's the best part - when i use different cover directly on the back of the phone, WITHOUT original battery cover (i have thick back case which you put on battery cover, anti scratch thing) signal was just as fine as without any cover!
Then i tried covering back of the phone with a case from another phone (Galaxy S) and signal was fine.
So the culprit is NFC spiral which is sticked to the battery cover. I'd like to take it off, but im not sure if it is possible to stcik it back in case of RMA or something.
I'd like you to try this simple experiment and tell me if your phones suffer from the same thing.
Thanks
hmm interesting
Lol wow with cover on I get 2-3 .. without cover 3-4.5 ... lol

What about turning NFC off?
Today i took off NFC antenna and it didn't work, which is strange. Now the culprit is whole battery cover. As i said i tried different cases and GPS was working fine with them.
Hello,
in our german community we discuss this problem, too. The Problem isn't the NFC antenna, it's the backcover! Some user tried with another cover from ebay: http://www.ebay.de/itm/250846706756?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 and this seems to work better!

Yup, that exactly what i considered. It's really funny, because original battery cover is making GPS works like s**t.
If that cover form ebay is really working i might consider buying it, i'll try to read original thread, thanks.
Have you tried that cover? My German isn't that great and neither is google translate. But from what i read this is really working, but i don't know how well.
im guessing NFC wont work without the stock battery cover
when did this GPS problem started?
it must be new...

Hehe. Put your NFC antenna back on. Google wallet is awesome.
Hey guys
I have my Nexus S (Blandroid + Trinity T144) tested just now, and now I only realize the GPS unit is on the right side of the phone.
Take off your cover, you should see a black, duct-tape like module pasted on almost 3/4 of the right side of Nexus S (the side where power button is located). That should be the GPS unit.
Tested with cover on, landscape with right side of the phone pointed upwards, I gained a score of 40~41 in one or two of the satellite in my view (GPS Test by Chartcross Ltd). When I test it with cover off, I gained a score of 45~47 in a few of the satellite.
Conclusion is, if you need a better GPS signal, you will need to hold it landscape with camera pointing to the left. Portrait mode will not works too well I guess. I wonder how Apple products can gain locks near instantly.
that's what i always do when i want to use GPS for navigation, pull off the battery cover.
it's almost impossible to get a fix with the battery cover on.
Humm I really wanted to delete this post but there isn't an option
Wow, i tried to get gps fix in my home without cover and it work!

I9500 Screen flickering (Imp.)

Hi guys,
I have a galaxy S4 I9500 version and I have observed a problem with it. I was sharing media with my friend's Xperia Z via NFC, while doing that, my phones' screen started flickering highlighting clock at the top portion.
Later I turned off both mobiles' NFC and taken both mobiles close and guess what my phones' screen flickered again.
I checked it with my old Galaxy S I9000 which doesn't even has NFC, again S4s' screen flickered.
Then I went to service center to show this issue, as they were not having any other S4 there to crosscheck problem, they asked me to visit a Samsung mobile shop. There I checked it with three S4s' which were on display and I found that problem was there with each and every S4.
So guys can you check your phones' for this issue and will it cause any problem to phone as the time passes??
similar type of problem

But I think it could turn into an issue because earlier my phones' screen was flickering and waking up automatically highlighting clock just like shown in that video.
I submitted my phone to them and they have replaced display with new one. Now it is not flickering automatically but it does while holding devices side by side as that sensor gets triggered by any magnet. So there is a possibility that the sensor could get permanently affected by a strong magnetic field and triggers the screen to wake up automatically.

They replaced display with new one and now the problem is sorted out.
Yesterday I tried something with my s4..
I disabled samsung link, clock digital(both of em), watch on, and dropbox.
The problem of flickering and clock appearing on top was GONE!! until......
I turned on the data network and found it coming back again...
I figured that it happened to me since i updated it to UBMG1 Indian firmware from BMEA
So i am now rolling back to the latter and sammobile here i come
Even i have also tried a lot of things... but problem was still there.... i think it messes with hardware and there is only one solution and tht is to replace the display with new one... if you find sonething to sortout this issue without replacing any hardware part...pls post it here....

Same problem here.
Does any one got this solved.. as said by one member, even in chennai - tamilnadu, they are not clear on what the issue i am explaining to them, they just changed the motherboard. but no use still.
"S-view mode activates itself, dono why... it happened for me in a month old S4, i got my motherboard replaced, but still the issue is persisting. but the frequency became less. thats it. other than that no use.
as mentioned by one of the member, it is annoying as it happens any time u work with your phone. in any screen suddenly "

I got my screen replaced but in vain.. I think using the S view cover will help because the flickering is caused by s view initiation (black screen with clock) which is initiated by a magnetic sensor..
Buy unfortunately the s- view cover is costly and so I cannot buy it at the moment .
A possible solution is to turn the s-view service off to stop the flickering issue..
If any developer on the site could help us out..

- Actually am using the S-View Cover. But with no use, when its out of S-View cover it behaves erratic by switching to S-View display automatically.
-Yes you are right it can be a software problem ,but take my words, i used a S4 which i bought on launch date in India, i used it for 3 months, then i gave it to my cousin, and bought another new one - this is the one which is showing up this S-View Issue,
the old one which i had was a GEM, not even once i had this problem of S-View with it, both where of same SW revision level, hence there is something to do with the hardware.
am just waiting for the October 4.3 update, if this is not solved in that SW by any means, then am gonna **** on every Samsung technician in the service center, they don't even know the difference between Hall sensor and proximity sensor!!!! , for making them understand the problem in our phone itself is painstaking..
in between is there any change to bring this issue to Samsung's eye.!?

That's not a issue. It's s-view feature in phone. If your phone get close to any magnet/magnetic source then it will activate s-view screen.
A lot of devices like iPad and Nexus 7 have a small magnet in them to provide support for cover/accessories. If your S4 get close enough to that magnet on other device it will activate s-view screen.
I dont know exactly if your other phone that you are trying NFC with, has a magnet. but there should be.

I know that it is a feature but it comes just in between typing process or running through the temple (temple run) and it disturbs a lot so I thought of using the s- view cover so it will restrict the feature to only when needed out initiated by closing the cover instead of coming every time in between activity..

i have again given the phone to the service center, lets see what happens next.

do i9506 and i9505 have same displays?

hello,
today i gave my i9506 in repair for changing display unit. the man in the shop i gave it to said that there is no difference between i9506 and i9505 when repairing the display and they will build the i9505 into it. but i read somewhere that there is a small difference. do you know about that? because i am confused now and scared that they will break my device

Done. The Support couldnt give me an answer on my question.. I will see what happens.
U can compare the devices on different internet sites and u will see that there is NO difference between those displays
well, there might be no difference, but actually, yes there was ! o:

Now they have to reapair it better.. with i9506 display that will work 100%

So? Is there any happy ending?
I have changed display from i9505 too. and Phone is hanging, turning off and overheating...
Im interested if this is because of different display or because phone was wet when damaged display...

hey, nice to hear that it might not be the screen, for me the result is still unknown. My device was not working after letting them put i9505 display in it. It worked for quite an hour, than it restarted very very often and suddenly it didnt do anything at all. No Download mode or recovery mode too.
The shop said, that the software was completely deleted for no reason. but they flashed the firmware again but the problem with rebooting and after all having a "dead" device was still there. Now they are trying to find whats cauing this problem, and the will send it to samsung if they dont have a plan what it could be ( but i definetly know, that it has to do something with the screen, because earlier, befrore the display change, EVERYTHING worked fine!).
Im so excited how it will end, and especially, who is going to pay, if samsung has to repair what the shop has done wrong
Its really interesting....
I think they could break something when disassembling screen... It was quite difficult to remove some flexible cables as they were stick to screen.
If you have Samsung warranty then you can take only to Samsung dealers to repair, otherwise you loose warranty. That's how it is in my country.
update: My s4 was dead for half a day. but now fully working. have already flashed recovery and rooted... works like a charm
(it were restarting sometimes, after rooting restarts somehow have stopped)

finally i think (and i hope) i got a solution. Thex have ordered a i9506 display unit and finally understood that theyve done something wrong. now they will try to fix it and see if the fault was caused by the screen or not ^^ in some days i will now more
Well after trying to learn a bit about difference between i9505 and i9506 and shv-e330s i came to a conclusion that they might be the same device if samsung didnt magically decide to complicate things. I9505 and i9506 have different hardware and their displays are obviously not interchangeable. But, nowhere on the entire frickin internet was i able to understand is i9506 actually shv-e330s. Or are their screens compatible. So i asked samsung like this:
Hello! I would like to ask is there a possibility to replace a broken display on SHV-E330S S4. My father purchased the phone in South Korea and brought it to Croatia, but the phone fell and broke the LCD display. I am trying to find the display for SHV-E330S but I cant find any on the internet. My questions are - can I order a replacement display from Samsung directly? Or can I use the display for i9506 S4? They seem to be same variations regarding hardware inside, except for the DVB tuner antenna for SHV-E330S. Thank You in advance for Your answer.
Their response was just that they cant offer service outside of korea and that they are very sorry. Havent even mentioned the question about i9506 and shv-e330s.
So there ya go. You got shv-e330s outside korea? No help.
different screens
Hello there,
yes it is a different screen
I suppose it is interchangeable because I9500 or I9505 screen (I can't remember exactly) is working fine on my phone. BTW, I got the part and replaced by myself.
But, please note if they replaced your front panel as well, probably your MB was damaged. The front panel is a different one.

Hey,
Yes there seems to be a problem, at least you cannot use a i9506 screen on a i9505 Phone.
Seems to be a Problem with the connector, because the screen works until somewhat applies too much force on the conector (not much, just a tip with the finger is enough), like the backcase does when it is clipped back on. So the connectors might differ on the on the models. Hope this helps someone.

I sanded down the raised metal bit on the right of the motherboard mounting area. It fits almost but I have that pressure issue. Do you have more info so I can figure out what connector is pushed

battery drainage I9505

Hello guys. I'm a not so happy owner of a i9505. Bought it secondhand, today from some guy on Facebook.
It's battery is in perfect conditions, the phone itself is fine. But the battery duration is... weird.
It drains 3% each 5 minutes, with the screen off. I don't even have Sim or SD card in. And I have wiped it the minute I got it.
I'm on stock lollipop.
See the screens ples.
Can someone help me?
Ty!
Just because the battery looks good doesn't mean it is good.
But if you look at the awake and screen on sections, you can see that they don't correspond.
The phone is awake when the screen is on. That's good.
But if the phone is awake when the screen is off, that's bad.

Ty for the response! But how can I know if that is happening? And how can I fix it?
But even with screen on it drain to fast. In five minutes writing this, 4% is gone. And I still don't have Sim or SD cards.

I already told you that your battery may be the problem.

Probably a counterfeit fake battery with a faked Sammy sticker.
A quick way to know if you have at least an original battery is peeling off the silver sticker on it, if you see a strange black sticker (NFC antenna) underneath the one you peeled and the contacts of the lithium cell is in both side of the metallic casing.

Wow. Totally gonna try it as soon as I get home. Ty!
You don't have to peel off anything. If you have another NFC device, then try using NFC to transfer a photo or something. Fake batteries usually don't have an NFC antenna, so the NFC file transfer will probably not work if it's a fake battery.
