DIY scratch protection

I noticed the first scratch on the corner of my Jam today. Since electronics always take the most abuse on the corners, I devised a quick and easy way to protect the corners of my Jam while I'm in Europe for the next 3 weeks. Take electrical tape or clear satin tape and place a piece over the corners. Works best if you cut a slit in the tape so you can fold it around the corner without wrinkles. In all probability the device will land on its corners if dropped or take the most abuse on the corners if scraped against something. Thus, problem solved; I did it to my digital camera too. It doesn't look half bad on either device, and if you can't stand the black corners, just use clear tape. Any tape works as long as the adhesive won't stick to the advice after you remove the tape.

Why don't you run the tape all the way round? I think it will look somewhat better!... :wink:

I'm sorry, but that has to be the stupidest looking thing I've seen in a long time. Why don't you just get a silicon case for about $10 off of EBAY? I mean, if you REALLY need electrical tape and that's all you can find...great. But just get a cheap latex or silicon case such as the ones from JavoEdge.com.
Do you put electrical tape on the front and rear bumper of your car too?

Just curious, what specifically do you expect to happen in Europe over the next three weeks that would necessitate such a precaution when you don't prepare against similar risks at home :wink: ?

I don't get it! People seem to get very upset when they discover they scratched the ball mirror on the back of their JAM. Now we have a JAM covered in electrical tape. Should we all carry our devices in the original box? Or better yet never use them to keep them in pristine condition? I am not saying I didn't get a little ticked off when I found a nice big scratch in the corner after a small drop but come on! I think we're all getting a bit too precious. Anyway, to each their own.
Of far more concern is the gunk that gets on the screen from my face every time I hold the JAM to my head! I mean yuck! What the heck is up with that? Is there that much oil on my face??? I just washed it! I gave my phone to my friend the other day to make a call and his face left some sort of super oil on the screen that wouldn't scrub off for several minutes! Its gross and embarassing! I think we need some sort of face oil protector!

Does anybody have any idea for cheap screen protection? I think the prices are outrageous for the slices of film sold as protectors.

I use the cheapest of them all...
They are made for Palm devices and are sold on flea markets or "One Dollar" stores... :lol:
They cost $1 dollar the 12 Pack!

scratch? i've droped my mini 2 times and got 3 dent edges. damn sad. The stupid casing they gave me is getting pretty loose. I put it on my belt.... so everytime i knock it seems that pouch just flings out. The screw and the plastic seems to have worn off.
I think i'm gonna go to a skinning shop to hide the dent edges.

try to buy a leather case for Nokia 7610. it fits.
You dont use that in the box lether case. It will easily fall of that tiny hook.
Wit the lether case of Nokia, it is mounted sideway into the belt by a leather that is sewed.
mine has never fallen. Even if it falls off the belt when you undress, the leather case is so stiff that it will not dent the mini.

Dropped mine on a concrete floor from about 1.5 meters and got a really ugly dent on one of the corners of the battery cover. The cover wouldn't even go back on!
Easy fixed though. Just took a plastic pen and pushed the dent out from the inside. It still shows a slight dent and small scratches if you look closely, but what the heck...

Anyone know of any metallic paint (model, SKU, UPC code) that I could use on my JAM? I rarely put on my seatbelt, and the one time that I decide to play safe, I scratch up the corner of my JAM. I'd never go "ghetto" as one person put it in the thread, but I'm sure there's something out there to match it up. Any ideas?

Get the jam off of your belt and put it in a proper car holder and you will not only protect it from getting scratches from your seatbelt, you will also get it charged while driving. And also one less reason not to wear a seatbelt that could save your life in the case of an accident.

Incidentally, can anyone recommend a decent car kit for the JAM? I want one I can mount with some amount of ease somewhere on the console... I don't like those ones that stick on the windscreen.

Dust under the touch screen - solution!!!

Hi to all who have dust between the touch screen digitizer and LCD.
I send my device 3 times to the authorised HTC service center because of this problem, they cleaned it (not perfectly) and the dust was back again after few days of use. This was really ennoying for me...
After several disassemblies, cleaning, research where dust comes in, then assembles I found the flaw.
The dust doesn’t come in via sealing foam between the touch screen digitizer and LCD.
There is a bump defect of phone housing around the volume keys. Inside of the plastic housing is a metal frame, where the touch screen digitizer is stacked on - that frame is a little bended and the touch screen doesn’t stick properly on it (around the volume keys only). When you look close on the phone you can see also a little wider gap between the touch screen top glass and silver plastic housing edge. (See picture)

this repair at your own risk.
So, now, what you have to do:
For those, who have already dust in, just simply disassembly your device (if you are brave enough, have all tools and precise hands - maybe some experience ) and remove PROPERLY all dirt with brush, compressed air and antistatic cloth, then assemble it back or send the device to the service center to clean it (wont void the warranty). Before sealing your TD2 (keep it in plastic bag away from dust) prepare a sharp wooden toothpick, neutral transparent or black silicone (you can purchase it from any building material shop) and cotton cloth.
Now you have to clean the gap between whole plastic silver housing frame and touch screen top glass with soft brush. Then use sharp wooden toothpick to impress the silicone into the gap (all gaps you can see, just in case) (silicone does not damage phone housing and TSCR surface and it’s easy to clean), then just gently and properly wipe off all the rest of silicone from phone surface. (be careful not to get silicone to the keys or phone receiver slot)
Leave the phone for several hours to get silicone dry.
Then you can use your TD2 in dusty environment and your display stays absolutely clean and dusty free. (TESTED on mine, for me perfect phone now and I am very happy with it...)
For those who have a little dust in and want to stop come more in and those who are planning to buy TD2 (dont wanna play the lottery faulty or not ), do the same procedure (silicone impress only) after unwrapping your device from plastic package.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not crazy enough to void the warranty of my phone because of a minor thing like that. When mine gets dirty, I send it back and that's it.
If it gets dirty again, I send it back again...

I sent mine back over a week ago due to this dust problem (in fact I delivered it in person to HTC repair center in Milton Keynes) hoping for a quick turnaround.
I'm still waiting for it to come back and missing it terribly. I'm back to using my old Nokia E71 which is a great phone but I like my new one and want it back so I may go down the route of the OP just so I don't have to repeat the return each time I get a dust issue.....

I just got a topaz and want to keep dust from getting in but I'm confused about the sillicon. Could you describe more clearly what it is and maybe post a picture so I have some idea what it should look like.

from the picture, for the second gap, apply the protective foil that comes with the phone. Should solve a bit the problem. Ber in mind that after apply, the touchscreen will not have the same sensitivity. You'll have to tap a little bit harder ...

I thought these dust under the screen issues had been fixed long ago, but now it seems the problem that affected my old c600 has come back to ruin my topaz after just 1 week.
Not impressed.

I already use a screen protector. I'm more concerned about the first gap. I really don't want dust to happen since I bought my phone second hand and it doesn't have a warrenty.

you can always use a can of pressurized air to get the dust out. (same you use with PCs)

Wouldn't you need two holes that are connected if your blowing air into the device? One for the air to go in and one for the dust to go out? I don't have any dust under my screen currently and would like it to remain that way. The silicon method doesn't seem to difficult or dangerous which is why I'm interested in what silicon to use.

from what I understood (from the pictures in the 1st post), it's not actually a hole, but a free space = gap.

I opened the D2 (only the two upper screws - for lifting the inner part a bit) and did have a look for "gaps" somewhere around the volume controls - i did not really see a gap
But for getting out the dust: dont blow air into the D2 but get the air out - i actually used a vacuum-cleaner. If you remove the two screws it is possible to lift the LCD below the volume sliders *A LITTLE BIT* (=about 0,5 mm only!!!!!) with a small screw driver to create a gap. It worked quite well. (be aware of high air flow and possible static electricity)
But i really would like to know, where exactly to apply some supplementary sealing to get rid of the dust-problem. Any detailed pic would be appreciated.

Yeah Me too!

OK, people, just put some neutral silicone between (in the gap) silver plastic frame and touch screen (there is just 0,2 -0,5 mm gap, almost invisible) and you wont get any dust under the touch screen. This is the best solution, you could do it from inside, but its much more complicated...

What exactly is neutral silicone? Do you have a picture of it so I know what to buy?

I've had it for about a week and the user I bought it from had it supposedly for about 3 weeks and so far no dust. I'm still terrified its going to happen though.

Thanks for the pic, pedroo - so they simply should have glued the digitizer surface a bit more careful to the housing...

The truth about the construction

On many review of SII are mentioned a fact, that SII has a plastic construction...
From reason of scratched cover glass (my french bulldog is a very fit dog ) I was a obliged to put phone in to the service for a replacing glass. from the construction and simplification reasons is a minimum replaceable part set of - glass, display, "silver" plastic shape and... a aluminum/magnesium precision pressure casted frame... all parts are stick together and makes a un-dismantle part.
well - be sure, that SII have a precision, solid steel skeleton. Not only plastic base case... Olalaaaa....

Well I don't really understand. There is only a plastic body on and in this phone to make it light and prevent iphone like death grip.

Be sure - inside phone is a light aluminum-magnesium light frame (skeleton)... In a free time I will upload a proof photos. BTW - this plate also working as a heat cooler for processor.

Doesn't look like it's doing its job as a heat cooler Guess i won't be needing gloves in the winter, phone gets hot enough to keep your hands warm

They are plastic and coating in a primer... Get a hot pin and place on the part you think is not plastic and you se it will melt!

As you can see at attached photo - I was a try to cut of by rough file on to the deep aprox 1 mm - stil aluminum - not plastic... It really does not look like a metalic surface paint...
Also - there are clear visible a metal particles after grinding.
Belive me. I have in my hand a RAW material. Your only photos...

You can tell buy trying to flex the phone. If you hold it by the sides and try to twist it there's no bend or flex whatsoever. Some people may not like the aesthetic of the phone but it's certainly not frail and doesn't feel cheap.

S4 Front Glass Replacement

I've bought an s4 dead cheap 2nd hand and it works fine except the adhesive glue underneath the glass hasn't set properly giving this strange wavy effect around the outside.
Like I said the digitizer works fine so all I really need to do is take the glass off, clear the glue off and replace it with new adhesive. The problem is I don't think it's possible to get hold of Gorilla Glass so what's the best alternative? Is there a 'almost as good as Gorilla' type of glass for sale somewhere or are they all the same? One of the things I love about my nexus 4 is how smooth the glass so giving that up kind of sucks. Also what adhesive should I be using? Someone told me I might be able to double sided tape instead of glue, would that be a possibility?
If anyone has any experience with and wants to share some info that would be great!

Taking off the external "screen" is tricky and risky.Ive seen the guy in Jokus video link doing an s2 before, but youll notice hes replacing the whole thing (which costs £150+).
In another video, a guy manages to change the piece your on about, but he admits he ballsd up his 1st attempt...so he needed the whole screen....lol
Also it looked like you dont get any stuff to stick the screen down with the new part, as the guy used the existing tape.

Oneplus Two Screen replacement

I broke my OPT screen when I dropped the phone. I ordered a replacement screen on ebay and disassembled the OPT using videos I found on the internet. The OPT was relatively easy to take apart.
The replacement screen arrived. When trying to place the replacement screen into the frame, I noticed that it lacks the glue on the edge of the screen to attach to the frame.
Any ideas on how I can attach the replacement screen on to the frame? Is there any glue that I can buy? Or will regular glue like super glue(permanent glue) work? Just don't want to risk damaging the replacement screen.
Any ideas?

Dont use glu you should be able to find adhesive strips on eBay or somewhere online

What will happen if I use superglue to attach the screen to the frame? Will it damage the screen?

I'm sure what kind to look for but they are all over eBay and for superglu I'm not sure what will happen but I'm sure there a reason why they don't use it in the first place

Hello all, I went to a local store that repairs phones. I asked to if they would sell double sided tape and offered to pay a nominal fee. They were kind enough to give me a few and at no charge. With this I have put back my phone in working order.

In how much did you got your replacement screen???, I also broke my opt, it's easy

Sorry, have not been on xda in a while. I paid about 25 USD on ebay.
Its pretty easy to replace. Takes a lot of patience.

Since the thread has been revived already, I'll drop in my $0.05 since I just replaced my screen last week
* The assembly/disassembly is fairly easy following video tutorials, it's not even necessary to remove all parts if you're careful with the heat.
* Remember to move the fingerprint sensor, the glued-on touch buttons and the phone speaker cover on top to the new screen.
* As always, you need to be patient when heating and ungluing the old screen from the frame (luckily it's glued only on the borders).
* I got my screen from aliexpress just under $20. Couldn't find any difference between it and the original one.
* As previous posters said, do not use any cyanoacrylate glues (superglue, etc), they leave white stains on the glass.
* I was also surprised by no glue on the frame I didn't have time to order adhesive strips, used a really thin layer of silicone adhesive, worked well and there are no gluing signs.

Glass with the LCD. I think replacing only the glass would be very hard, if even possible without proffessional tools.

It certainly looks the same, both internally and running on the phone, compared to my gf's OP2 which still has the original screen.
I bought this one, but I guess all the aliexpress screens are the same

I dropped my phone too sadly. Contacted the local repair centre and they said I do need to replace outer screen and the digitizer. And the process is more than $100 if I convert it.
In Alixpress just about $5 for the outer screen. Do I need to replace both or just the outer screen?

I don't think changing just the glass is a good idea, I think there was video of a guy trying and braking everything. Just like the guy before said buy a screen for $20 and follow a guide. I also broke mine, but ordered a screen + frame for $50 because I thought it would be easier to just move the hardware.
