Hi all,
I'm starting this thread because I didn't see something quite like what I was looking for to answer some questions I had about exFAT vs FAT32. The question is, essentially, which file system is best to use with this high-cap SD card? If this thread is redundant, please let me know and/or direct me to the appropriate thread.
The reason I started looking for information is because of strange storage symptoms I was experiencing after introducing a SanDisk 64GB Class 10 SD card to my Verizon Note3. I first noticed the symptoms after taking the NC4 OTA (first mistake, I know). Nonetheless, the symptoms were there. I eventually followed some instructions to install BajaROM (thanks @az_biker and @barrackOBAMA) since the issue of r/w to SD card was addressed in that ROM, and since I could use that ROM on the NC4 OTA base. However, the symtpoms persisted. One thing I noticed happened when I was re-installing apps on the new ROM. One, in particular, was MinecraftPE, purchased legit through the Play Store. I would install the app, and it would open and function correctly. Then, when I rebooted the device, the app would not run from the app drawer. The app would still be listed in Settings > Applications > Downloaded, but it was listed as 0.00MB installed. If I executed the app from the lingering icon, I got the message "App not installed on this device," which would open the Play Store to re-install the app. But the app wouldn't install at that point, since it was still registered as installed, per Settings > Applications. I had to uninstall from Settings, then reboot, then open Play Store to re-install. Ugh! I was able to get the app to install "correctly," though not as preferred (App2SD), by un-mounting the SD card prior to executing the install from Play Store.
One other major issue involved using the stock camera app and saving to SD. When the pic was snapped, and saved to SD, I could open the pic from the gallery link in the camera right then, and even share it. However, if I exited the camera app and opened the stock gallery app separately, the pic was listed as a broken link (or unreadable file?) and I could neither open it or share it or anything. The file was also defunct if I tried to access it from any file manager utility, stock or otherwise. The only "fix" I found for that was simply to save pics to internal storage. Again, ugh, that takes up space quickly.
I've read a lot of information about exFAT vs FAT32 and I've wondered whether the issue is that exFAT isn't a good functional match with Android in general or, in this case, even with custom ROMs. I do not, by any means, assert that I truly understand Android OS, file system/structure protocols, or anything of the sort. I read when I don't understand. I've read varying opinions about which SD card file structure is best overall to use with Android, and about which to use with high-cap SD cards. I see that ext3 is reliable and scalable, but that I'd need to use Linux to access it from off-device. That is a bit more awkward for me. I see that, overall, FAT32 is more reliable for use, and that there's no incompatibility with Windows. I don't really mind that file size is limited to 4GB, so I'm leaning that way.
Also, I found this on TeamWin website, which I found helpful (quoted & referenced). It explained what's what with exFAT (for me, anyway).:
"exFAT is an update to FAT32 file system and is commonly found on 64GB or larger sdcards. exFAT has a different and much more restrictive license compared to FAT32. Due to this restrictive license, we'll probably never see exFAT support in the Linux kernel. Many Android manufacturers (e.g. Samsung, HTC) have cross-licensing agreements with Microsoft that allow them to add exFAT support in Android, but that agreement doesn't mean that we're able to add exFAT support for your device in TWRP.
You can reformat your 64GB card to FAT32. You may need to remove the card from your device and use a computer to accomplish the reformat. You also may have to find and download a third party utility to format to FAT32 if you're using a Windows PC. The biggest downside to using FAT32 is that FAT32 doesn't support files larger than 4GB.
If you need a file system that can support files larger than 4GB and works in recovery, you pretty much have one choice: ext4. Unfortunately Android often doesn't handle ext4 formatted sdcards automatically. You'll probably have to mount the sdcard manually using a shell script, GScript (free app in the market), or an init.d type of script. You also won't be able to pop your sdcard into a Windows computer because Windows doesn't recognize the ext4 file system.
You're also welcome to try NTFS, but the majority of the time, NTFS will only mount as read-only in recovery. The Linux kernel doesn't have very good NTFS support either."
So that's a lot for a post. If you're still reading, thanks. I welcome any and all feedback or insight regarding my SD card "woes," or the issue(s) I presented. I'm definitely ok with learning and appreciate your time and help. Have a great rest of your day.
SscoootzZ :fingers-crossed:
I have my sandisk ultra 64gb formatted fat32. I do not need it to handle files larger then 4gb so no issues for me.

Hello, i was searching these forums and couldn't find my answer. I just got a new 32gb sd card and would like to do a ext3 partition and instsall S2E. I copied orginal sd card to pc, then tried to do a 512mb, 0 swap on new sd. But for some reason rom manager gives me this triangle exclamation error picture. i really want to set up my 32gb correctly like you pro's! please explain how to set this situation up. greatly appreciated.
Is gparted the easiest way? Also should I use dt a2sd, or s2e?
"the only good bug is a dead bug"
gparted is what i recommend. Ive gotten Rom manager to work as well but a lot of people seem to run into the same problem you do when using it to partition.
And I prefer s2e for its simplicity and the fact that it persists through flashing nightlies (unless you do a full wipe). Its never given me any issues what so ever. DTa2sd works great and the only problems ive ever had with it are the getting it to initially flash. But once it installs its always worked for me. But if you're on cm7 theres no reason not to run s2e
Thank so much for replying and helping me out. Going to Google about gparted this weekend and figure it out. Again thanks for your two cents.
"the only good bug is a dead bug"
Gparted is fairly easy to do. Boot your computer into Ubuntu and connect your SD card to your USB port using a USB card reader (not your through your phone). Then just go to gparted in the application list and reformat and partition the card the way you wish.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
Just remember that the first (main) partition needs to be FAT32, followed by your smaller ext partition.
Gparted is not as easy as mentioned above. If you use windows system and not familiar with linux, it's quite complicated for my pont of view.
I guess you have two choices:
1. Gparted under win (Gparted+VMwareplayer), faster reading speed
2. Partition Magic(but reading speed for sd card might be slower than solution 1), easier operation.
So I ran the CD and my 32gb shows 26gb at fat32 and 4gb unallocated? Is my 4gb lost? ok... Got that problem resolved, now a new one. ive made my main fat32 and then for some reason i get a flag on my /dev/sdc2 ext3 partition after ive selected apply.
So I was wondering is the flag icon going to be a problem? Or is this puppy ready go!!!
Found the problem.....faulty SD card!!!! This a lesson to myself. Never buy a no name SD card from ebay. I grabbed a patriot, made myself an ext3 partition using gparted. No flag popped up and installed s2e and we are good now. Thank peeps. Delete this thread if you want.
I know you solved this but just throwing this out as an FYI...
I have the same triangle/exclamatiuon problem almost whenever I do a backup/restore etc...
I found if I pull the battery, and immediately reboot into recovery manually -- by pressing vol down and power, the phone takes the previous command (like backup/restore/partition) and goes ahead with it...
Maybe Mines' a failing SD card...but I back it up regularly
UPDATE well it looks as though I have found a solution to my woes. I made several attempts of formatting the 2gb card in my laptop to no avail. I tried my old captivate that it originally came out of and the cappy had troubles reading it. I then stuck it in my evo and it registered instant, so I did asdcard format on my evo and then finally the tablet registers the card. In case this helps anyone else
First off someone please enlighten me on the tabs use and the way it mounts the external SD, I read somewhere that it only uses it for media files such as music books and pics. I have an 8GB that belongs in my EVO, and a 2gb that I had for my captivate I was hoping to use in my Tab for now.
Here's my story, maybe someone can shed a little light here: My tab was purchased with Stock 3.1, I was getting annoyed by the constant update request so I went ahead and rooted and installed CWM without incident, then I decided to install the Stock rooted update from here, however when I insert my SD cards they say they are unavailable. So I stick my 2gb in my laptop format to fat32 (should this be different?, typically it works in every other device I own) It still won't read, I did exactly as others point out in other threads but still I am stumped as to how the card is made available to the OS ? Now in a fit of frustration I pulled my 8gb out of my evo put the 2gb in and wham there it is, I put the 3.2 download on the 8gb popped it in tab entered CWM and flashed the update, I don't know if the 2gb is mountable in CWM I will try tonight but the 8gb was mountable through CWM however my 8gb also was not available to Android even after the update.
So what the heck is the use of the external SD and how is it used?
I think you might have an issue with your ROM,
I use my external SD for my titanium backups and other files I want to keep portable. I have used the SD card through my PC via USB and directly by putting into the PC's card reader.
Have you tried using a file manager? I use File Manager HD and the external card shows up as Storage on the left bar.
As for the filesystem, I think I may have originally formatted as FAT but I have also pulled my SD out of my Blackberry and used it to install Honeylicious through CWM,
All in all I dont think you should be having the issues that you are having...
Good luck
If it won't mount in CWM you need to format it in your android phone, that fixed it for me. Once it is formatted correctly you'll see a notification that an SD card is installed. Also my PC wouldn't see it until I put a custom rom on. Also to store items on it you can use a file manager to move things to and from it.

The 8gb card did mount in CWM but would not mount in the OS, or when it would I would get it was unavailable or sometimes even empy when I know there is only about 1 gb free space, I did not test the 2gb in CWM mainly because it was late and I needed to go to bed, but I will try tonight. The 8gb is the one I updated to rooted 3.2 with, I still need to go to 3.2.1 ? Is there a rooted Stock 3.2.1 floating around I really havent looked much into it yet
I have noticed that getting the iconia to read some sd cards is like tossing dice..Most people who have this issue says one card works perfect in every device but not in the iconia.. Some say the card will work sometimes and not others .. Some say the card works in cwm and not with file manager..
The issue here i think is that you have two CARDS THAT ARE FUSSY ABOUT mating with the iconia. OR Your rom .i would read the threads in the rom you are using.. IF still nothing that sounds like your issue ask the DEV about this.. If STILL No luck you can either try to buy a new diffrent card or flash a new rom to try and Diag. this issue..
Good luck..
Silly question
Is your microSD formatted FAT32?
If it is anything else, your unit may have trouble reading it depending on what ROM you are using - Not all ROM's are capable of reading NTFS or other file systems.
Sometimes, microSD's freak out as well, and the only way to get it back to normal is to format it in a Symbian phone (Nokia)
Also, make sure you are using the correct mount point for the card - /mnt/external_sd - Root Explorer and other apps like it can get there.
Other than that, you may just have a bad microSD, I have had many of them die for seemingly no reason.
I apologize if this isn't in the correct forum. I wasn't sure since it's dealing with two dif os's.
Anyways, my question is Can I access files on the android jellybean partition from inside of wp7? I would like to be able to play movies, look at pics in wp7 that are in the android partition.
Also, what about vice versa? One last question. Wp7 seems to run very quickly, but Android seems to run pretty slowly. I assume its because it's running from the SD card. Is there any way that can be sped up to run at normal (fast) speed?
--- edit:
is it possible to put android on the nand, and wp7 on the sd so that the android os would be faster?
So.
Yes, you can access files from FAT partition on WP7. Few file explorers allow you to do that, just have a look at them and check if Storage Card folder works. They also allow you to watch videos, view images and play music, but forget about playlist support, subtitles or anything complicated. We don't have software to do that yet.
Vice versa is not possible since WP7 uses its own file system which Android can't see nor use.
Android will always run slower because it's an unoptimized piece of sh- I mean software. But you can try ROMs which take advantage of EXT4 partitions using NativeSD method - these are noticeable faster, no more waiting for minutes for apps to launch. You can also overclock CPU and use higher read ahead value for SD card (SD Speed Increase from Market).
Putting Android on NAND and WP7 on SD is not yet possible. It might be when Magldr 2.0 will be released (and it won't be really that anyway), but we don't know when.
thank you
thanks for the detailed and thorough explanation. i see that you are also using a dual boot. how slow/fast does your paranoidjellybean operate? i'm going to look into ext 4 and cpu boosts. i guess i will have to reinstall/delete everything in my android partition to do an ext 4? and i guess if i go ext 4 wp7 won't be able to read it? i'm going to look into it. i will update this with whatever info i find.
---- edit
I'm going to try and use the roms you name in your signature area that you are using, and see if it works any better. what sd card are you using? I'm using a micro center micro sd class 6 16gb one. i'm getting a 8000ffff error in this wp7 rom when trying to get something from marketplace, and the droid is too slow. going to try the ext method for the droid. (can't dl apps on droid either!) so i will post what happens here.
---- edit
ok, i'm thoroughly confused by these instructions (somewhat vague in parts ) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869673 Is there a video tutorial where it is shown what to do step by step to get a native sd setup for a dual booth with android sd and wp7? Do I just do it the same way I did before (install wp7, then reset / repartition, but instead of using fat32 i make a fat32 (how big) and an ext4 (or 2?) and which comes first (the fat or the ext) ? Afterwards, ALL partitions are primary?
i found this info for installing ext4. but do i create the ext4 BEFORE or AFTER i install WP7 ?
I'd say Paranoid JB is pretty fast using NativeSD (EXT) method. You will need to create an EXT partition first, but keep a FAT partition, because on EXT the ROM will keep only its own data and apps, the rest is still on FAT (just like now, but instead of data.ext and system.ext in ICS folder there is a partition just for those). Windows Phone 7 will not be able to read content of EXT partition, but it will not be needed, since there won't be anything worth looking at and all media files you will still keep on FAT. You will also have to make a backup of everything on your FAT partition because it will be lost, and fresh install will be necessary. You might want to backup your applications with Titanium Backup though.
For more information on partitioning please visit NativeSD thread.
I'm using a 8GB Transcend Class 4 card with 4GB FAT, 1GB EXT and rest (2.4GB) WP7FS. I don't have any errors with downloading apps on neither WP7 nor Android. Are you sure you entered that special code for Marketplace and logged into Google account on Droid?
furthermore
actually, i installed the hd20 rom you're using and had no problems with marketplace. at this point i have hd20 wp7 set up, activated, and working. i'm just trying to understand some of the more advanced information in the forums about setting up the ext4. i found some very technical instructions (edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534714 ) for setting up an ext2 with gparted via dos then upgrading it to ext4. i don't know if that will mess up the wp7 partition, and if i should have done this before i installed wp7.
i had already read the nativesd thread, and the extended threads from it. i'm afraid i'm just not knowledgeable enough currently to fill in the gaps of information i find in a lot of the instructions. but i'm not giving up.

this has gotten way off the original topic so I've started a new thread with a diferent topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31356468#post31356468
Hi, can anyone explain to me this app and how to make it work? Didn't find any good up to date tutorial.
Here is some info:
-I have TWRP rooted stock rom (SM-G935F)
-SanDisk extreme pro 64gb microSD card
-Plus version of Link2SD
-Pro version of MiniTool Partition wizard
Just can't make it work...So here are my questions:
-Can I use whole SD card as internal storage link? Or do I need 2 partitions, one classic mass storage, second one for linking? I am not planning to remove card from phone.
-Do I have to make some storage label in MiniTool, or can I keep it blank? And what about partition letter? For example G: , or can I set None?
-Can I use linked storage partition from computer via cable as MTP?
-What partitions are viable for S7 edge? And is there speed difference? (ext2/ext3/ext4) ... I was trying Fat32+ext4 and then whole card as ext4, phone always tells me card is broken and need format and I am at beginning again.
-If I somehow manage to make this phone to recognise it, how to actually use Link2SD app?
There are some topics and videos out there, but I didn't find anything up to date or in english.
Keep in mind I am just ordinary user who somehow managed to root his phone only becouse of this app - to expand low internal storage, without any knowledge about android, linux and filesystems. I just need to move some huge games to SD completly with obb.
Thanks for any advice.
Im having the the same issue with using Link2SD on my SM-G935F... Ive tried partitioning the sd card in every possible combination and still get a 'corrupt storage'' issue from the ext extention partition when rebooting my handset. From what I can tell its the actual Samsung firmware thats been rewritten to read the external storage differently due to their lack of foresite of allowing adoptable storage (code written out of their versions of Marshmellow 6.0 +, same as Sony for the Xperia range)... Fingers crossed a work around is found sooner rather than later as Link2SD is a lifesaver for releasing data and obb files from internal storage
I don't really know but I think the ext SD card is used as storage and even with solid explorer and similar file managers you have to grant permission before deleting or even creating a folder else it'll fail so I think you have to configure adoptable storage in order to be recognize as part of SD card to be used with Link2SD and also I haven't seen an update for Link2SD for a very long time.

I also have the same problem. I tried ext2 and ext4 as the second partition. Allowing 4GB until 1.5GB partition because according to the old guides, it can only process up to 1.5GB of second partition. But still, it always says it's corruted, there was a time when It was successfully read by the app but after restart, the problem returns. There was even a time where the FAT32 partition was the one that is not recognized
Sooooooooooo....
is there any solution to this yet ? cannot find Anything STILL !

Same here. Link2sd is not working (mount script error) anymore on S7 Edge (SM-G935FD). System crashed and did factory reset. Hope this issue could resolve soon.
I have the same problem, witch I think is specifically for this model (SM-G935F). Its seems that even rooted, it has some security on system folders, that prevents necessary mounts be done
I tried a mod where I can use the sd card to be seen as internal memory, but that mod pushes all apps to the sd card, and if affect performance of apps like facebook and other apps I use daily
in my previous phones I used to use linl2sd and I was in control which apps to link to sd card, and I would never choose facebook or whatapp , I used to link big games only
Is there a way to make link2sd work on s7e instead of the silly mod that pushes all apps to sdcard
So I finally made the leap from Lollipop to Marshmallow. Everything has been going fine for the most part, but I've hit a huge snag: moving apps to SD.
I use Titanium Backup to keep a full backup of my phone on the external SD card. I depend on this backup for two purposes:
1) it makes updating the ROM (like this time) a lot easier. I do a factory reset, get the base Android going, re-install Titanium Backup from the Play Store, point it to my backups on the external SD card, and then I'm good to restore (either full app+data if that's safe, or I first re-install the app from the Play Store then just restore the app's data using TB).
2) It saves my butt in the event of a phone hardware failure, which has happen several times over my many years as an Android user. I just buy a replacement phone, move the SD card over, and restore my apps/data in a similar manner as in #1.
I have a Galaxy S5 with 16GB of internal storage, which is certainly not enough so I depend on my 64GB external SD card greatly. Between keeping all my large media on the external SD, as well as moving what large apps to SD as I can, this has been fine. I use Bliss ROM.
So make the jump from Android 5 -> 6, and finally get to the point where I need to move some of the apps I've restored to SD... but can't find the option. I do some research, and now am in a panic. From what I can tell, you can only move apps to SD if you use the SD as adopted/internal storage, which means it gets re-formatted, encrypted, and can only be used with that phone. This eliminates the possibility of #1 & #2 above. To continue performing #1 & #2, I need to use the SD as "portable storage" (the way it is now), which apparently leaves no way to move apps to SD.
I am in a pickle now, and feel stuck. I'm hoping I'm missing another option. Help?

From what I've read there is a method for app2sd to work with mm. I never had success with it though, and downgraded to ll.

A method other than formatting the card as internal/adopted storage? Did the method involve setting up multiple partitions?
While I could set up a FAT32 partition just for TB, then adopt the rest, my backups aren't the only thing I've needed to access after popping out the SD card. For example, just being able to load media that way is quick and sometimes a life-saver. I've also used that as a way to get zip files on that I could then flash via recovery. I'm also not clear if you can "mount" adopted storage as USB while in recovery so it's visible to the computer as a USB mass-storage device while the phone is connected via USB cable (as you have been able to do normally up to this point).

Which app/thread are you referring to? Or are you talking about Bliss ROM itself? I didn't post in that thread, as this issue seems generically Marshmallow-related, and not specific to Bliss.

It's a marshmallow problem, not Rom specific. In xda's app section there are threads for both link2sd (not working) and app2sd (works for some). Check those, I think that's where I saw the info.
Ok it wasn't easy but I think I've gotten my head wrapped around Apps2SD and have it working. I tried the free version, backed up my 64GB external SD, partitioned it with a 16GB f2fs partition (for moving/linking apps) and the remainder exfat (for using the way I've traditionally used it). Restored everything back to the exfat partition and fixed where BeyondPod and Titanium Backup were pointing to. Did a few test links and it seemed to be working although fumbling my way through was confusing at first as I didn't find a clear "how to". Ended up buying the Pro version of Apps2SD once I felt good that this was a workable solution.
I still get an error on boot about my SD being corrupt but I just need to search on that, I'm sure there's a simple fix somewhere.

Ended up buying the Pro version of Apps2SD once I felt good that this was a workable solution.
I still get an error on boot about my SD being corrupt but I just need to search on that, I'm sure there's a simple fix somewhere.

I think the consensus was to use NotifyClean (Xposed module) to eliminate that message at boot. :good: Everything still working for you otherwise? I was thinking of upgrading now, and think this might work too:

Ok it wasn't easy but I think I've gotten my head wrapped around Apps2SD and have it working. I tried the free version, backed up my 64GB external SD, partitioned it with a 16GB f2fs partition (for moving/linking apps) and the remainder exfat (for using the way I've traditionally used it). Restored everything back to the exfat partition and fixed where BeyondPod and Titanium Backup were pointing to. Is f2fs and exfat supported by stock MM in Apps2SD? Got it formatted with fat32 and ext4.

Ugh. I do not want to have to use Xposed.

Well it was working just great... then I rebooted. Apparently some trouble getting the 2nd partition (fsfs, where the apps are being moved to) to mount at boot. Trying to sort it out in this thread:
