Yellow tint on screen - G3 General

I have the Verizon LG g3 and when I compared it to my LG g2, on white backgrounds the g3 screen is clearly more yellow or warm compared to the g2. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Do you think it's worth to try to exchange it for a New one?
Sent from my LG G3

The G2 was actually too blue, as are most phones. True white is slightly creamy to most eyes. Most people are used to white being Titanium Dioxide white they use to colour plastics, cosmetics and ceramics, but that is actually blue.
However the G3 is a bit too yellow, it may fade over time, sometimes it does. I rooted mine and adjusted the screen temp a bit.

The screen on mine is too yellowish for my taste, will get an exchange device tomorrow, if this one will be as yellowish, I will return it immediately and go for another device.
I don't care if the G2's screen is too bluish or whatever, I really liked it's display, but the G3 screen is to dimm and "warm"

Could you post which app/setting you did this with?

I loved the "cool" display of the G2. That G2 is still my favorite phone. Even having the G3, I miss it. Still my favorite display also (color and temp wise).

Just got the replacement, sadly it's display is even more yellowish, so it will go back too the next days, will get a used G2 instead and wait what this year will bring on.
Really sad because I really like the G3, but can't stand the display...

I used Trickster MOD and set the colours to 238,238,255. Its still a little a warmer than my G2, but its no longer beige! Slightly yellow is right for whites, but my G3 was almost brown!
Now I just need to fix the back light, its too dark on auto.

Really sad that people are too used to wrongfully calibrated screens. I even rant to LG with straightly opposite demand a while back http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2299888 and seems like they listened and made a right decision to calibrate G3 perfectly. Their OG Pro had too blueish display around 8000K with almost green yellows, my eyes were bleeding

Not too sad I guess, as white on the G3 looks like there is a yellow screen protector on the screen...
Next thing is that the yellow screen in combination with its low contrast just looks awful.
But everyone has a different taste, so it will look nice for a lot of people, but not for me...

And by the way, why is it so many twin threads around here? Wasn't it better to discuss pro and cons of G3 display in the already existed and full of comments thread as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2782251 ? I think it would be more proper and lead to more constructive way of discussion

What color tint does your screen have? Blue, Yellow or Neutral?

In conjunction to the post, "blue tint problem," which isn't really a problem but anyway....
I thought it'd be interesting to create a poll to see where everyone's at with their Vibrants.
Please participate in the poll, it'll be very interesting to see...
So if you're on the blue side or yellow side, obviously submit yours accordingly, however, for neutral that's for those who have calibrated monitors that can get true comparisons to determine if it's neutral.
There's no need to lie here LOL..it's just for fun so the more accurate it is the better. Don't just click neutral if you don't really know for sure. Try comparing your phone first with other Vibrants to be sure.
Here we go!
It's slight blue, but related to viewing angle and screen brightness. Viewing straight on, it's pretty neutral.

I know what you mean. Could the SAMOLED screen perhaps slightly change in its color tone as it warms up?
When I fired up the two Vibrants I have that was turned on for the first time and compared it to my other two which has been in use, the two never been used phones screen looked identical in its tone/shade.
So perhaps over time it does change as it, "breaks in?"
Does anyone know if this blue tint will get better with time? Mine seems to be the same, wondering if I should exchange my phone.
Well, mine is more cyan, though I can understand people calling it blue and it's driving me crazy. Even with brightness all the way up, there is no real white. This issue will likely cause me to return my Vibrant - along with the cheap build quality - as my Nexus screen looks much better and neutral in comparison. Even my wife noticed it immediately though she also has a Nexus.
Neutral, I've compared with monitors and other Vibrants from my T-Mobile store.
The blue should fade over time..sometimes they put in a bit of extra blue to compensate the blue's lower life span..if you want to even it out use a blue background as your home screen for a while and it should even out >.>

Are you sure it will fade? Where did you get that info from, I know wikipedia talks about this and says the same thing, but wikipedia is not really that accurate. Where did you get your info?
I downladed an LCD test app from market, i'm running a constanst blue screen hoping it will help fade out the blue tint a bit. thanks

When compared to mine my wife's had a very strong blue tint to it. Since I ordered ours over the phone I called Tmobile. They overnighted me a replacement without any hassle, I'd give them a call and see what they will do for you.
posted this in the other "blue tint" thread too
"...since the OLED material used to produce blue light degrades significantly more rapidly than the materials that produce other colors, blue light output will decrease relative to the other colors of light...In order to delay the problem, manufacturers bias the colour balance towards blue so that the display initially has an artificially blue tint, leading to complaints of artificial-looking, over-saturated colors..."

I guess if you did not receive a defective Vibrant with an extremely blue screen, even with brightness all the way up and power saving mode off, your not qualified to speak for those who did. Of course it would not make sense to you.
i dont know about you guys but every time Ive ever seen a white LED its always had a blueish tint (like automotive LED's) its really not that big of an issue
My display was noticeably blue the moment I turned it on... going to the T-Mobile store today to see if I can get a better unit with a more neutral color temperature.

It matters to some people more than others. If it doesn't bother you then great. It's not really fair to criticize people who are bothered by it--one should have a reasonable expectation for color accuracy of their display, especially for a device so touted as being a multimedia powerhouse.

I have that issue with the blue screen and for some reason I'm the only one who sees it, I work for T-Mobile and I was showing my co-workers that there is a blue tint to the screen and they didn't see it it until I compared it to another phone. I'm also a graphic artist and I guess we see colors that others don't notice cuss we have too that's what we do. I also had a issue with the screen, there was some pixelation on my screen so I exchanged it.

You know, some people here say every Super Amoled has a blue tint. I have to disagree. I've been comparing my vibrant side by side to other vibrants, and the screens vary from phone to phone. Samsung deffinately has some manufacturing inconsistences. Side by side to other Vibrants, my screen has a very visible dark grayish blue tint. Other vibrants have a slight blue/green tint. While other vibrants i've compared to have gorgeus warm whites. 1 vibrant had a very dingy yellow look to all the whites. So this is not in our imagination, the screens vary a lot on these phones.
My cousin just got the vibrant this morning, she had not seen mine. She saw mine this morning and says "why is your screen blue?" Put mine side by side next to hers, and hers has nice warm bright whites. All of our brightness settings were identical.
I'll be exchanging shortly when I have time.

Black G2

Is there gonna be more colors available soon....I'd prefer a black g2. I hope they don't do this like the nexus and keep one color. Non Tech ppl night not get it bcuz of it being so called "ugly"
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
There hasn't been information about additional colors as far as I have heard for the G2. T-Mo seems to be saving all the colors for the MyTouch HD (Confirmed that the phone will come in Black, Red, White, and Eggplant Purple).
How is the steel finish ugly lol... Black looks cheaper imo... even after having a Black G1 for so long...
But anyway, I really doubt this will be a phone released in multiple colors, based solely on the steel battery plate.
if you wanna change your phones color just go buy a skin or something, i think this phone is straight.
FWIW, I think the phone looks much better in person than it does in pictures.
I think people that are worried about the phone's color are....

I swear HTC has this thing for asymmetric and 2-tone color designs, which I don't quite understand and can never seem to appreciate. There are several phones from HTC that I really like but really hate the color of. One example being the Nexus One.

This.
Honestly I thought I was going to hate looking at this thing, but I bought it because it seemed like the perfect replacement for my trusty yet aging G1.
Once I had it in my hand, I realized that pictures don't do this phone justice. Part of the reason for this, I believe, because the darker color at the bottom of the phone gives the impression of angling in sharply at the trackball, but that's an optical illusion.
Of course taste is relative, but I think the G2 looks great, both front and back.

Not really, in the HTC video there is a white Desire Z, which should be for G2 only
the color of the G2 may seem a bit too 'business' for some
just wonder why they are that conservative this time when there are 5 different colors for the G1

MyTouch 4g screen has yellow tint?

Hi I just put the My4g next to my iPhone 4 and Galaxy tab and on all 3 I went to Google.com and compare the screens all 3 look different My4g has yellow tint iPhone 4 has a pure white and galaxy tab has blue tint. Did anyone compared? Now mytouch broke my heart and I m thinking of selling it. And I bought it yesterday.

Hm... not sure if it's the screen technology but I compared my screen to the vibrant and iPhone 4's as well. The vibrant has a really blue tint, the iPhone looks white I guess... every so slightly blue tint, and the mt4g has a slightly warmer tint than the iPhone. Not sure if it's that the iPhone screen is a tad blue, or the mt4g is a tad yellow... either way I don't really mind because I won't be holding them next to each other and it looks fine by itself.
you definitely have a problem with yours. call for a replacement.
after reading your post I decided to re-compare my g2 screen to my mt4g, and the whites on the mt4g are way better than on the g2.
the g2 seems to have the yellow tint you are talking about, when comparing to the mt4g.
a lot of it has to do with brightness levels too, so you might wanna take that into considration.
funny thing is I am considering returning the mtg4 and keeping the g2, since images are a lot crispier on it... funny... the colors do look better on the g2 when watching videos or playing games.
wonder if there's a way to manage colors on these phones.
Please post questions in Q&A section.
My MT4G is pretty warm as well. Whites are a tad yellow/amber compared to my wife's Vibrant which looks greenish/blue. See if you can compare yours to another one in the store, you can't really compare the color temp to a different manufacturer or model, I don't think they bother doing any color calibration on these things.
I just sold my mytouch 4g and I'm heappy to be back to my vibrant beautiful screen and speakers.

There's differen't screens being used in the Mytouch 4G's. One that looks on par in color/contrast ratio as the G2 and another that is very washed out and has terrible viewing angles.
I've had 4 differen't MT4G's
My first one had a great screen, my 2nd one looked washed out. brought it back...got another washed out one. went back a few days later with my friend who has a good one so we could compare and I got another good one. Don't know if it's coincidence, but his good one is a Plum MT4G. I had them open 6 differen't black ones and they were all washed out. I finally said, "Let me try a Plum one" and it had a good screen. But, My original one that had a good screen was black.
The reason I say it's on par with the G2 is I had the G2 right before this phone. (for a week and a half).
Easiest way to tell the difference is, turn the phone off angle a bit...the good screens shouldn't really wash out unless it's at an extreme angle. The bad ones seem to wash out unless you're looking at it DEAD ON. Also you'll notice richer colors and warmer color over all with the good screen. like in "settings" the grey bar at the top should be Grey...the bad screens it looks periwinkle.

easier way to tell if you have the higher contrast screen vs. the washed out screen.
Under settings, there is a Grey bar at the top that says "settings" in white.
That Grey bar should be grey, not periwinkle.
Click the Images below to compare with your phone. If yours is looking more Grey congrats you have the good screen.
If yours is looking more periwinkle...too bad, so sad.
I'd like to add that the Grey is nearly identicle to my phones when i held it up. The periwinkle swatch is a tad darker than the bad screens. But you should have no hint of periwinkle what-so-ever. Also this is tested using the "auto" brightness setting.

Not all Nexus S SAMOLED Displays are the same

Hi everyone,
I'm starting this thread to show you guys that not all Nexus S AMOLEDS are the same. I purchased a Nexus S on launch day from one store, and my brother bought a nexus S from another best buy store. We were comparing each others phones, and mine turned out to be darker than his, specifically the whites. We compared our screens at full brightness, and we set the same backgrounds, and his was noticeably better looking. So I went and exchanged mine, the new one I got still suffered from having darker whites, but it was not as bad as the first one, so when we compared them again, his was still better. I took a few pictures of the new one i got compared with his (on right). It may not look like much, but if you look at it in person, it's very noticeable when they are next to each other. I think you guys should compare your nexus s with a display model at a store, or with someone else to see what I'm talking about. I think it's easiest to see what i'm talking about if you look at the search widget. Like I said the first one I had was worse, but I'm comparing the newly exchanged one (left) with my brothers (right).

Yeah I know what you're speaking of. I started a thread here about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877497
I went through this when I bought dual monitors for my computer. It is nearly impossible to find two monitors exactly the same. You will not know the difference unless you keep comparing it to others.

lol thats true. it made me laugh lol
download a solid white wallpaper. set the brightness to the highest. if one of them is cool blue white then this is good screen. if its warm yellowish white, then its a bad screen.
also there is the issue with pinkish disaplay. download a solid gray wallpaper. set the brightness to the lowest, if the gray turns to pink a little. you have a defective screen no matter what others tell you. if it stays gray " like my old Samsung Galaxy S " then you have a perfect screen.
AND there is also the grid pattern matrix you can see on the lowest brightness on the same gray wallpaper. ALL of them are more visible on the Super Amoled screens, just try to get one that is not very noticable.
if you got all those 3 perfectly " with no dead pixels or stuck pixels. then your phone worth alot.
i sold my galaxy S USED more than i bought it NEW because of these effects when i mentioned them to the buyer and he saw with his own eyes the difference. plus it didnt have single scratch on the whole phone so it was like a brand new.

No one's nitpicking. It's a matter of what you're willing to settle for. I paid my 580.00 for a phone to display the colors correctly. I didn't pay that much for the display to change colors just because I lower the brightness.

ya, after i took pics, i realized they were not on the same page on the home screen.
This is a very common issue on the Galaxy S phones too. Different suppliers are used in the manufacturing process resulting in some screens with warmer color temps, and others with cooler ones. The Engadget review of the Nexus S specifically called out a warmer temp by the way.

Dumb question, but did you verify that the brightness levels in settings are set to the same values? Or at least compared the two phones when at the lowest and highest settings?

ya, i actually made sure they were both brightest, and when they are both on the lowest, you can tell one of them displays brighter whites. But the first one I had was worse than the one I have in the pictures on the left, it's hard to notice that you have a screen that does not produce nice whites, unless you see another nexus s that does a better job.
I actually like the ones on the left, the ones on the right crush the blacks, resulting in basically everything washed out, even if it "looks" better to you, it isn't from a calibrator prospective.
The Evo 4G had the same thing going on with its display. HTC used 2 different Manufacturers for the screen, One Novatec, One Was Epson. I believe the Novatec panel had darker colors (warmer?) resulting in more of a purplish color on blacks (what ll_l_x_l_ll calls pink for whatever reason) While the epson didnt have any purplish tone, but most say had a washed out look.
I would say though that on the nexus S, probably 99% of them are going to have a little purplish effect on the lowest brightness setting. If the OPs brothers phone has no purplish color, that would be the first i have seen. Ive seen many many demo units, several video reviews, and even the 2.3 rom ported to other galaxy S phones, and they all have the "purplish" display.
All my whites on my phone are really white, and blacks are really black.
Only be concerned if your screen looks like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882862
That would definatley warrant an exchange, because they are NOT supposed to look like that.
My Screen looks better than his I9000 though too, but that could be his camera too washing out the colors a bit

Yeah my camera isn't great, it was poor light but it was enough to show the difference.
My i9000 screen is pretty incredible, I'd be impressed if I saw one better.
Oddly though, you say that if it turns blue when the brightness is turned right up, it's a good screen - my Nexus S does that. But it's yellow when the brightness is low.
Personally I think I'm going to take your advice in another thread. I'm going to return this phone for a refund, enjoy using my i9000 for a while as it's now apparent that the screen is excellent (I never really had GPS issues either, so I'm pretty lucky), and go around stores when they have stock to find a screen that compares favourably against my i9000. I'm in a nice position that I can do a side-by-side comparison each time.

Here is the real problem... Your brother is smarter than you. You see, there is a difference maybe in the screens. But instead of him *****ing about it, he likely just said his was better. Thus leaving you with the **** screen.
The tables could have been turned if you would have said "HAHA your screen is broken, and mine is better" the second you found the screens were different. Then it would be him here all upset about the screen.
The things people ***** about on this form are just crazy. And no, I don't care about how much you spent on your phone. When you buy any product you should only have a expectation that it is usable, not perfect. And thats mostly because perfect is mostly opinion when it comes to things like this.
Also, this is a phone, not a pro display marked for having the most accurate color production.
What kills me most is the people who take phones back over and over for problems that only exist in their heads. All you are doing is raising the cost of phones and keeping them high for everybody else.

Slight pink hue.

I have noticed my unit has a slight pink hue. When tilting device vertically I can see it disappears and its only visible when looking straight on the screen.
I am not used to AMOLED displays, last I used was Galaxy S2 is this a common issue or maybe not an issue?

I saw this too, but it seems to have settled with use
I have a replacement coming tomorrow for slight cosmetic damage on the back so will see if it has that hue or not

I take back my original reply, pink hue still there
It looks like its the "feature" of this panel. Something I need to get used to.

Are you sure its not your face, mine looks pinkish dead on and looks normal again at an angle.
Switch to sRGB aswel as the out of the box settings look like a HD Cartoon
I don't think it's a face reflection. I have tried sRGB but its way too washed for my liking.

My display is warmer/yellower than I expected straight on (not as much from an angle) - I thought they figured this stuff out by now?
When I turn on sRGB mode it makes it less yellow but too washed out and it doesn't seem to stick after reboot. Anyone?
Put it this way, whites on mine definitely do not look pure white like some reviews have said. I hate how screens can differ....

I feel mine is the same. I recently had a HTC one m7 so maybe it is just me being not used to AMOLED displays but mine feels very yellow/warm... I can only see true whites when looking at the screen from an angle!

Yes sounds like mine. I called Google and they said if I want I can have another sent to me (they would put a hold/authorization charge on my account) and then I send the original back when received. Then the hold/charge is dropped. I told them I'd think about it.
Any chance the warmness will change/look more normal over time or no? I'm pretty positive that it is actually more yellow than it is supposed to be compared to "normal" ones, so don't second guess yourself if you think it is. I've had this issue so many times in the past with phones....

Hmm.. It's a bit gutting if something is wrong! I've just managed to set the darn thing up. It does feel awfully yellow... The only way I could know if it wasn't right was to see another one... So maybe I'll have to pop to CPW and see if they have a display one to compare to.. I only have 14 days to do an exchange of needed and I'm already 2 days into that now!
I'd feel stupid if I took this back and nothing was wrong but at the same time I'd feel stupid keeping this handset and finding out that the screen was rubbish!

I hear ya, yeah we do have 2 weeks but they also said we have a 1 year warranty of some type..not sure what the difference is but she said they would only replace with new ones right now since no refurbs.
Not sure what to do....

I've just read online the 5x has had massive issues with yellow screens. Google is replacing them so I'm definitely going to pop into CPW and raise the issue with them. When holding my phone next to my old HTC one m7 its clearly very yellow, which can't be right!
Frustrating as I imagine that CPW won't have a replacement in stock yet...
Just google nexus 5x yellow screen to see what has been happening!

Yep I saw the 5X issues.
Well let me know what happens when you go.
Thanks.
Every amoled I have has had this to a certain extent or another. My GS6 edge, my Moto Maxx (international version of the turbo).. It's something I have grown use to on amoled displays. I can see it in all of them, even if it's slight. Some people just do not see it or notice it for whatever reason.
I have a felling that all phones will have this "issue".
I had mine against Galaxy S6 edge plus and it seemed that mine has a better colours etc. But it was on the first day and I didn't notice pink/yellow hue so wasn't looking for it in Samsung device.
Regarding CPW exchange stock. I have ordered it this morning in store and got a text it has been despatched so should have it tomorrow.
So don't worry and go to store. Just say you spoke to customer service and they told you to come to store to order new one.

I was just going to ask this - for the people who are saying the screen is great and whites are really white, etc...I mean they can't really be seeing what we are seeing right? It's not awful or terrible but it is definitely noticeable slightly yellowish/warm to me, especially compared to my LCD G3 screen and an iPhone 5 screen.
Do you really think all AMOLEDs are slightly yellow/warm? I can't let myself believe that but at the same time I haven't had an AMOLED in a while so it's hard for me to decide in my mind...

I was talking more about the pinkish hue. Amoled whites have always sucked. lol They are never white but always have a tint to them. With the nexus s it was a blueish tint, with later devices like the GS6, Turbo etc... it's a pinkish tint.. I mean if you just do a search of Insert_any_device_name_that_uses_amoled_screens_here and "pink tint" or "blue tint" or "purple tint" there will be at least one thread or something about it online for every single device.. lol I think some people's eyes aren't as sensitive to it so it's not as noticeable to them

Well I consider mine more yellow than pinkish, and also goes away when you tilt it - but I'm sure everyone sees the temperature slightly different.
I know there are always variations of screens but knowing that there PROBABLY is a much more balanced/correct version of the display out there is an awful feeling - the thought of having to get a second one and the second one will possibly suck too is just the worst (first world problems).
It also sucks that these aren't in local stores to go in and compare the display to.
Fwiw, mines the exact same way. There's a small degree of head-on angle that goes yellow-whites instead of bluish-whites.
Putting it side-by-side with my Turbo, its still a lot less yellow and I never had an issue with the Turbo screen.
