[Q] Bootloop on stock RAZR M - Recover Photos? - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend (not a techy person) has a completely stock RAZR M which is bootlooping after a failed update. Phone itself has already been replaced but the old one has some important photos on it. I don't have the phone on me right now (will be trying to fix it tomorrow) but all my research tonight is telling me that data is probably unrecoverable. Figured I'd ask directly to be sure.
I will try booting to the stock recovery and clearing cache. My understanding is that ADB won't be able to pull files because my friend wouldn't have enabled USB debugging before this happened. A factory reset would wipe user files so that's no use.
Any tricks I can pull here? Possible to flash a custom recovery while bootlooping? Would that allow ADB access? I'd appreciate any help, so I don't have to deliver bad news

Look into house of moto... I believe (I've never used it) it has an option to flash without wiping internal SD (like I said I believe)... So you'll have to either flash the version s/he was on or a version higher... Then pull the files via USB or SD card...

That looks promising, thanks. I'll read up on it.

House of Moto using Keep Data or Universal should do the trick. Make sure to use the same firmware version the phone is on, such as do not downgrade. You can upgrade it though, so if unsure of version just get the newest version.

My RAZR M only has 8GB of internal space, when trying to create a ROM Slot 2 I am unable to due to lack of space. Is there any way to make it so ROM Slots can be created on the SD card?

Nope... think about that - do you want /system on a possibly removable storage medium? I don't even know if its possible lol

You did that and it worked? What ROM? Did you do anything special? I tried that the other night and had to rsd my phone back to ICS and reroot and update! Sup with that. I used cm 10 and it made my phone go into fast boot mode. "Failed HAB check" I think is what it said.
you can only used it stock type modded firmware i think ? DHB and other stock like ones.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner... BDH is what I used.
Follow this method.
1. Create ROM slot 1
2. Load BDH rom how you like it
3. Nandroid
4. Activate stock rom slot.
5. Delete rom slot 1
6. Wipe everything X2
7. Restore nandroid into stock rom slot
8. Wipe cache and dalvik
9. Reboot
Have fun!

Should have looked at this yesterday. You the ss guru! If you hadn't responded I would have given up. My hands shook bad both times as I rsd my phone. I bricked and broke many in my quest for root and ROM.
Sent from my XT907 using xda premium
I know that feeling. Last night I got my phone stuck on boot animation didn't have safestrap installed so I had to flash the firmware through rsd. My hands was shaking too because the flash kept failing. Finally I had to do a factory data and cache wipe to get it to run. I won't make that mistake again lol

[Q] Nexus 4 model, about storage capacity

Hi, how will I be able to know which variant (8gb or 16 gb) my nexus 4 is?
Before rooting, I think my total storage capacity is 12gb+ (I actually can't remember definitely).
Then I unlocked the bootloader and tried to flash, I was stuck in the X logo, I restarted, then I was stuck in the google logo (unlocked bootloader at this point.) I had backed up my apps and sdcard via adb.
I was stuck, so I downloaded a factory image and reflashed my device. Then I rooted it. I was done. SU installed, and it was rooted. I then reinstalled my app settings via adb again, but not the sdcard.
after sometime, putting music, movies and apps, I noticed that my device only had a total of 5.66GB.
I bought it 2nd hand, BTW.
So what happened? Now, I just want to confirm really how much storage I have so I can get back my money if this was indeed an 8gb version instead of 16gb. Any ideas?
Thanks!
All of the media you put onto your Nexus 4 takes up room. How many movies did you put? How many songs? If you feel that there is something wrong with the amount if storage available, then you can try formatting your SD.
I also remember that there's a bug on 16GB models to only show 8GB.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
there is a similar issue that occurs with the nexus 7. i remember it was talked about before in some threads. after flashing the images, did you do a factory reset or clear data in recovery? this seems to have the issue fixed. some units show up as 8gb after a reflash however a reset thru settings or clear data fixes this.
Do what thephantom said. Recovery must be stock though, not custom. If you need more help. I made a little how-to guide a couple months ago for this very problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35119185#post35119185
thank you guys... I'm relieved that it is a bug, I hope it is a bug in my case... One question though, do you suggest back up with adb + sdcard or titanium? my previous settings were not backed up using adb cmd (I'm not sure though, since I didn't push back the sd backup)

Stuck in Recovery

Any help would be appreciated at this point :/
Phone had been rooted, installed TWRP, downloaded the ROM I wanted and put it on external SD card... good so far?
Rebooted into recovery, made sure ROM and gapps were in the correct folder, wiped everything accordingly...The *contents* in the folder in which the ROM and gapps were placed were deleted. The folder its self was not, nor were any other folders or their contents in the mother folder.
Any clues? Now I'm sitting here stuck in either recovery or download mode whichever I so choose and the computer cannot identify the phone for me to transfer files over.
Uh......

You could uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers and use a USB port that directly connects to the motherboard (back of the PC) and try flashing stock again via Odin. Or, head down to Walmart and grab a micro sd card to place your rom, gapps, backups, etc on. I highly...HIGHLY recommend using a micro sd card if you plan on living the rooted life
How about taking out the external sd card, plug into computer and transfer rom and gapps onto card, put card back into phone and then reboot back into recovery.

This is your best bet. Otherwise you could adb push the ROM and gapps to your sd. But if you're not set up for adb, that's a lot of work.

Thanks guys for all the information. I have been having issues with installing the drivers correctly (Win8) but Kies seems to work well for the most part. I decided to open Kies and do the emergency restoration and it's back to normal now.
Question: If one were to restore it via Kies, could another model number be searched for and installed? ie the i9500 or i9505 firmware? Just a thought.
Anyway, thanks again... oh and I do have a micro sd card. I came from the Skyrocket and flashed probably half a million times lol. This is what threw me for a loop, deleting the ROM from inside the folder but not the folder, nor anything else on the sd card.

I always do this. It will save you time to make sure you keep a hard copy of your main roms on your PC. And have a way to transfer them to your mini sd (old phone, usb device, or mini to full size adapter. As most PC's have a full size slot. This method has saved me countless hrs.. Flashed about 15 roms on my new S4 and haven't even downloaded Oden.. But I've had to use this method twice. Works great.

[Q] Help - GS4 - Even Best Buy could not Flash

Hello All,
I am quite new to the world of Android, but have searched and read up for multiple days on this site before finally posting my issue.
I have a GS4 that had been running stock with the MF3 OTA update. I finally decided to root and install safestrap to mess with a few custom roms. Everything went well. I was able to create a Rom Slot and load a custom rom for testing whilst keeping my stock in original form. NO issues what so ever. I used the Wicked Rom.... Eventually I decided that I would delete Rom Slot 1 and go back to stock. I followed directions to the T, deleted the slot and selected to boot from Stock. NO GO. This is where the horror begins:
Now, the phone boots up but I see the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo and it stays there...does not go back. I no longer see the SafeStrap recovery screen when booting up. --- I cannot even get into recovery on the phone any longer: it says recovery booting in blue and stays there.
I am able to get into Download mode to re-flash - but naturally none of the stock firmware files are loadable via Odin due to an error I keep getting NAND Flash! (Fail).
I finally decided to drive to Best Buy and asked the guy to flash my phone to stock there. He put the phone in download mode and used their multiflash tool which did not detect the phone and thus he could not move forward. The laptop did detect the phone at best buy, but their software did not and thus flashing did not occur.
I am looking for any and all advice to get this phone running without having to return it to Samsung....please and thanks in advance.
My apologies if my search did not yield a positive result and there is something out there....
Well There is no way to flash with Odin while on MF3, so that effort is completely fruitless at this time. Did the guy try a different USB port, cord or even restarting the computer he was using?
Can you get into your recovery to do a factory reset?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Best buy should be able to do it. I remember reading somewhere that someone had to go to 3 different stores before they found someone smart enough to do it.. Lol
Sent from my SGH-I337 using XDA Premium HD app
I cannot get into recovery at all, it just says recovery booting and sits there....recovery booting is displayed at the top left of the screen in blue.
The guy did not try a different port or reboot. When he plugged the phone in, in download mode, the computer did recognize the phone but his Samsung software did not.

Well he is an idiot for not troubleshooting his system. I have had the same exact thing happen with multiple different computers and phones. The computer detects the device correctly, but the program I needed to use would not. More often than anything a quick changing of ports or a reboot of the computer fixed it. I have had to completely wipe out the drivers a few times and reinstall them to get it to work. 9 times out of ten, it is not the phone that is the culprit, it is something else before the phone.

FIXED
Well it seems the guy at my best buy was a TOOL! I took the phone in again today, had the battery pulled before I arrived - put it in download mode for him. Told him that Samsung tech support said he should reboot his pc. He did. Voila, reflashed to stock. Thank goodness....thank you guys for the advice.
Apply cold water directly to burned area.
Who's awesome?

Anyways, glad you are back up.

I think it's BRICKED this time!

Ok, I was on a custom ROM for LS980 and all of a sudden it rebooted and I had no control of anything. There was no service either.
So first thing I did was a reboot. no good. Then I went booted into TWRP and restored my last backup, thought this would surely fix it but nothing. Still booted but had no functionality, plus now it started to go into a boot loop. Tried recovering different versions and no luck.
Then, I decided to use the Flash Tool recovery method. It worked in the sense that there was no longer a boot loop, but I still had no service and could not use a lot of the functions like updating PRL/PROFILE and few of the apps would not launch like the quick remote, it would say "SIM not ready"
I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point as I only have the flash tool option and since I lost recovery.
Is this considered BRICKED or does anyone have an idea? thanks

If you are still able to enter in the ROM it's not Bricked....
Put the phone in Fastboot and flash a recovery via Fastboot commands.
Then you can wipe everything (except internal) and flash a new ROM.
I've never fastbooted before. Is there a quick tutorial link for this?

So I tried the flash tool again using different TOT files. ZV8 and ZVA files caused boot loops. The only file that almost worked was the ZVC file. By almost I mean, there's no boot loop, and i'm able to use the stock ROM however certain things don't work, like when launching the quick remote app, it says "SIM not ready", or stock video cannot play "Unsupported file type" error, and most importantly I'm not able to get any service.
The good part is, my wifi is working. So next I tried to root, however I get this a "unable to open /system/xbin/su: no such file or directory" (i'm attaching the photo for reference).
Thanks for any other tips of directions.
remove sim card and reinsert try that. Not working.
also check your imei. If its not there you may need to recover it from a twrp backup, (recover the efs that is) at least from the time you had no issues. Not working?
Also I read nothing about wiping. (wipe everything except internal sd) before performing a clean instal. Check for same issues, not there victory.
be carefull with full backups, they might contain the issue you are experiencing.

I am not very familiar with your model. But on the d802 there is a small slot on the side of the phone with a small hole. With the phone in box was a small metal device which you could poke in hole and the slot would open. Maybe other user could confirm.
Did you backup your twrp backup of the phone? Then now is also the time to put it back if the tot method deleted it.
Anyway did you check your imei, (dial *#06#, it should show your imei). usually when service is lost there is something wrong with imei, or simcard.
imei can be recovered by the efs backup in a twrp backup. Simcard via putting out back in, reboot, etc.
