[Q] Problem with the speakerphone - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody. I need help regarding a serious issue I have. When I am in call and I activate the speaker phone the other party can barely hear me saying the sounds is really low. But when I tried recording a sound it has no problems whatsoever. I have no idea why this happens but its really annoying me. I would really appreciate if someone suggests me a solution on this one, cuz I couldn't find any by now.

Something is most likely blocking the top microphone of the phone.

bump

Anyone please give me suggestion on what should I do, this is really annoying me..

Have you removed any cases etc. as mentioned above? If you have, to rule out any software complications flash a factory image.

Thing is when I use voice recorde, I hear it loud as f***, so there're no issues. Only when speaking and launching the loud speaker they say they hear me very low. And yes my display was broken and they replaced it, maybe they ****ed something, but since the Sound Record works well, where's the logic?

If there is a case it is possible that when you record sound, the device is recording through the bottom microphone which is not obstructed, and the top microphone you use during calls may be obstructed resulting in your issue.
Aside from that, maybe there is some sort of volume/speaker/microphone app that was installed that is messing with your mic levels during a call. I would still suggest to remove any 3rd party accessories and if the issue still occurs, than backup your data and flash the factory image.

No, tested with a lot of people with normal voice calls. Also tried Viber, Facebook calls - same stuff. My logic is this: since I am recording my voice with a voice program from miles away, that isn't possible to be the lower mic. So the speakerphone should work fine. But on calls its a different story, i tried without the speakerphone to speak away from the phone (mimicking as if it is a sound rec app) they hear me even worse. What could be the issue? I am confused

anyone...please answer guys, need desperately your help

No, but it hasn't anything to do with this. Tried several roms and kernels same results. I sent my phone for repair broken screen, after 1st delivery they even had the front camera not centered so i returned it back. Maybe the mic is broken? But if so, how come voice recording works well?

Dual microphone: calls quality

I've notice some problems with the quality of the calls, mainly the way people hears me. Looks like the noise cancelling is not working well and the upper microphone is forcing voice cuts.
I did a test putting my finger on the up microphone and people hears me better.
Does anyone have experienced the same problem? Do you know if there is a way to disconnect by software the upper microphone?
Thanks
The upper mic works only for video recording. I want it to cancel the noise in calls, but for now there is not such an option.
Yeah I've got some complaints from people I called that the quality was bad, I sounded far away. I've posted a thread as well. I haven't tried to block the top mic, gonna try that!! I've tried to use the Service Menu to change some mice settings, but I can't get in the appropriate sub menu...
yes - I'd like to know the answer to this too ...
I've done a couple of tests more, its the upper mic...
Just tried to call in a noisy environment, and covering the upper micro made a difference.

NO, you have that option when placing or receiving a call. Just pres menu and activate noise cancelling.
And this is what I use to solve the problem, I deactivate this noise cancelling.
so do i have to deactivate the noise cancelling manually every single time for the better call quality?
Hmm... sucks to be.
I think no noise cancelling has to be default, and we shold be able to activate it when we need.

Yes, I've been looking for, but only found the option to deactivate during a call.
Cloud someone tells us if there is a way to to it permanently?
What base band or firmware version are you guys on? Be buying a note over the weekend andwill test to see if the same problems arise. Singapore version is DXKK1 with XXKJ6 Baseband.

Same problem for me. I have bought my phone here in Latvia. Everytime during the call I need to turn on noise cancelation manualy. Hope, Samsung will make some update soon.
The people I called said that deactivating the noise canceling was a major improvement in sound quality. It's a bummer I have to deactivate it each time I call, there must be a solution for that problem.
But what about the cause of this problem. Is this a firmware issue or is the upper mic defect? I would like to hear from more people, we can't be the only ones having this problem.. If the mic is defect I'm sending my note back to the supplier.

Gsmarenas review is up: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_n7000-review-676.php
gsmarena is reporting excellent call quality and audio (music) quality.
now which magical test unit did they receive?
In my case no one complained of audio quality, they said that the voice just sound perfect. And this thing happened on both SGS2 and Note with noise cancelation on.
So tiny holes each on top and bottom of the phone are microphones!
I thought they were water drainage holes

Popping sounds on calls and low microphone issues

On calls I get popping sounds. a few times the pops have been so loud I almost dropped.
The microphone is also really low. people can't hear me I use to be able (Gnexus) to set the phone down and talk with it on the computer table next to me but now they can't hear me.

Standard 'is this a hardware problem?' test:
1. If you are on a custom ROM, flash completely back to stock and retest.
2. If you are already on stock, backup all your data and factory reset. Even better, completely wipe the phone and re-install stock and retest.
3. If the issue still occurs, the issue is most likely with the hardware. If the issue no longer occurs, then it was a software problem.
4. If I understand this reply correctly, you have already received a replacement device and the issue still occurs. In this case, you happen to be very unlucky.
As for the Nexus 4 in general, I can only speak anecdotally. I don't have the issue on the seven Nexus 4 devices I've tested: two of my own, three from coworkers/friends who also own the device, and two test devices.

Since the issue only happens during Skype calls and not while using the standard calling function, I would blame this issue on VOIP quality: either your latency is high, Skype is having quality issues, or some combination of the two. I have issues with Skype call quality on both my phone and my PC, and the issues are largely to do with Skype throttling the call bandwidth.
what about my mic issue the sounds very low. is there a way to change the gain on the microphone? I always use my phone by calling 1 of my friends I'm placing the phone beside my desk as I speak with them they can't hear me with this new phone they were able to perfectly hear me with the galaxy Nexus.

Try disabling noise reduction in call settings... echoing has been a problem since the s2 sometimes disabling noise reduction helps or turn down volume on your phone.

I have made a lot of test :
Disable noise cancellation (Still echoing)
Change SIM card (Still echoing)
Reset the phone (Same problem)
Also when I plug a pair of headphone with a mic, Ive got no problem but when I remove it, the echoing are coming back
Did I have to try something else or its a hardware problem?

i agree, some of original covers also cause issues. I have both original samsung s-view flip cover (bought @ INR 22XX/- ) and i had same issues and my friend have problem with original backcover comes with phone. we showed the problem in service centre and changed the back cover for my friend within warranty. now its ok for my friend.
for me, i stopped using that s-view cover and used the original one comes with phone and now ok for me.

Hi,
I have exactly the same echo problem. Did you solve the problem?
I just started experiencing the same thing after flashing 4.4. Never had this problem and now the problem doesn't even get fixed when I went back to 4.3 or 4.2.2. No idea how to fix it, I have full wiped each time and tested on the clean rom so it can' t have anything to do with my apps. I also removed the back cover and case to test that theory but nothing helped. I hear a static and my own voice echoing. I don't think the other person hears the echo though. Does anyone have a solution?
I have also tried flashing different modems but that didn't solve the issue.
Problem solved!!!
I found the problem. i was experiencing the same problem, the other caller was hearing an echoe. First i thought it was the s-view cover but no. if the microphone is in any way covered it makes an echoe so do not cover it, and for the answer to your questions just clean the microphone hole using a needle. Now it works perfectly. Have fun Guys!!!

I have the echo effect of my voice when someone calls me. I use a bluetooth earpiece so the phone mic is not the problem. I've thied three different bluetooth headsets and all of them have the echo effect for my voice (the other side doesn't hear it).
I did put on a Samsung Qi charging cover but I can't remember if the echo effect started before or after I put on the Samsung Qi enabled cover. first i want to test the unchecking the noise reduction box to see if that works, if not then I'll replace the back cover to see if that is the issue.
I'm skeptical about the back cover being the problem, however, because it only happens when someone calls me. For example, my daughter called me and I could hear my voice in the echo. I asked her to hang up and try again. Again I could hear the echo. So I had her hang up and I called her. No more echo. Neither have I heard the echo on any other calls I make, but it is on all the calls I receive.

Exactly! Also reboot fixes the issue but after some time it starts muting again. Happens only on outgoing calls for me. On incoming calls microphone works.
So the only solution is factory reset? Maybe new .570 firmware build will fix the problem...
I think you guys should also take about your issue in talk.sonymobile.com
I made a thread there called "Skype issue on 5.1.1" in the Z3 Compact section. Sony needs to see this.

I'm also having the same Issue and realize that the real problem relies on Google app. If you disable the "OK Google" recognition on any screen the mic will work as it is..

After much testing of features and apps i have got the problem down to either OK Google from any screen or Sony Smart Connect.
It is only when 1 of those features are enabled, does the mic mute sporadically.
There is no pattern and therefore can be absolutely certain. My instinct us Sony Smart Connect.
Can you guys try a skype call using earphones? It really doesn't work. I have smart connect and google app disabled anyway. The mic just refuses to work

Nexus 4 same Problem. Only reason why I abandoned it and bought the z3c. Thought it was an hardware issue. Loved the device. Hrrgh.
Right now the z3c is in for repair. Display coming of and using the Nexus 4 again.
Following even more testing. I am convinced the problem is in Sony smart connect. disable and remove it.
Been working OK for a couple of days. Must reboot once deleted the app.
Note that some other apps have the same issue like Vidyo Desktop.
Trying to freeze off smar t connect, finger crossed

Problem with audio on calls barely audible

I have been reading on this online trying to find a solution without any comprehensive solutions so would appreciate it if someone could please help me out....
While talking on the phone using my moto x style...the people on the other end say that they can barely listen to me....i have to literally shout to make them hear it...
do any of you face similar issues? am i doing something wrong?.
I am on stock btw and received the OTA MM update a week back
Please let me know what other details you need to identify and solve the problem
Ok so its not just me. It started as soon as I updated to MM. I did find somewhat of a work around. Usually if I take the phone away from my ear (so the display turns on) and then put it back, they can magically hear me again. If that doesn't work I toggle speakerphone mode on then off and it works.

I disabled Enhanced 4G LTE Mode and the problem immediately went away. After a few days, I tried my luck and turned it back on and haven't had a problem with other hearing people hearing me since. Good luck.
Unfortunately am still facing a lot of issues with the calls...my voice sounds muffled and extremely feeble to people and they arent able to hear me....
Am surprised nobody else is facing this issues...did i get a defective piece? Are there any other things I can try out....
extremely frustrated with it and not sure what to do...any help would be immensely helpful

I'm having the same issue on 2 devices. It happened on both OS's. I'm going to try turning off the enhanced 4g lte option. Maybe that doesn't play well with Verizon. One note I did make was the problem doesn't exist on speaker phone. I kinda thought it was the noise canceling mics being too functional.
Thanks please let me know how it goes and if you are able to find anything...I dont even have the 4g LTE option since I am using the phone in India...
Have tried disabling Ok Google voice activation which helped lot of OPO users but doesnt seem to work on MXPE
I've got the same issue on a phone I just got 3 days ago. Replacement should arrive today.
The problem... Low volume on the handset earpiece accompanied by very low level but constant background static noise. The background noise is low enough to only be audible in a quiet environment. Switch to speaker phone, Bluetooth, or wired headset and the problem is gone. The problem is only on the handset earpiece.

I see, different problem from mine. Audio for the other person on my calls is fine.
My replacement has arrived, but the problem persists. However prior to upgrading the new phone to Marshmallow, it was fine. Seems like a Marshmallow bug.

Thanks a lot for your inputs though...issue is a bit different...
Same issue here ! immediately after MM OTA update (stock vanilla) people start complaining they cannot hear me well !
After sorting most of MM issues this is a major pain in the a**
Let Moto know about this as it makes the phone crippled.
How come there aren't any more complaints about this serious issue !
This is 100% MM related - People complain they can barely hear me on the other end of the line - I sound muffled, stuttered and basically bad to the point they cannot continue the conversation and demand I call them from a land line !
Forget all MM bugs, problems, etc (need I mention the Equalizer went AWOL) now this Smartphone which I highly praised and loved became a ...smart something - with no phone feature.
Help me let Moto support be aware of this issue.
Thanks
I have the same issue, the other person is barely able to hear me.
I'm in Italy and i noticed that this issue come when my phone is in GSM (2G), when i talk in 3G it's ok.
I also made a TEST that you can do, i tried to speak with headphones's microphone and the issue is gone, but when I unplug the headphones the issue came back immediatly (switching the screen on).
Does anyone know how to tell this issue to Motorola?
Everyone of us should send his request to Motorola, to show them this common issue.
Got the following advise from Motorola support on chat - it seems to help - please tell me if it work for you:
please go to settings > apps > all > Audio Effects app - Tap Force Stop - Clear Cache and Clear Data.
Also under settings > apps > all > go to Phone app - Tap Force Stop - Clear Cache and Clear Data.
Now please turn off the phone and when you turn it back on try making a call.

I only recently got the MXPE, and upgraded to Marshmallow immediately. My first call was under Marshmallow's control. It had the background noise and low volume level.
I got a replacement and tried it under Lollipop immediately. It did not have the background noise, but did have low volume. Upgraded it to Marshmallow and the noise returned. So, I would conclude that the noise is a Marshmallow induced issue.
However, I have a second replacement of the way. My thought is that perhaps the noise is related to the low volume issue, which is a hardware problem, and Marshmallow is just highlighting the weakness in some way that results in the noise.
As for the volume problem, this is the first phone I've ever had to use at maximum volume. Even then, it is just adequate. From what i have read on boards like XDA, this is not normal. That, in part, is why I have another replacement on the way.
