I just recently bought a Rogers HTC Magic, rooted the phone, and unlocked it. Everything seems to work completely fine. At the moment however, I seem to be having an issue with a Bell Mobility sim card. Bell's HSPA sim works fine, and I seem to be able to use voice and data ok, but the problem lies in that their seems to be a roaming symbol ("R") on my reception bar. Im using the phone in my local calling area which is somewhat misleading to me.
Im using MyHero 2.0.5 ROM at the moment. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance!
Agreed
I'm doing the same thing. I'm running cyanogens roms and I get the same thing. Best I can tell is that this is normal on the magic. Just be careful if you live near the border like I do.
I figured this was normal too. I guess i'll try other SIM cards to see what they say as well, thanks!
Ya I also have this phone running on Bell, wish I could get rid of the roaming. It also asks if I want to connect once in a while too.
Shouldn't the romaing be dictated by the sim? I have a bell sim, on the bell network, why do I get the roaming icon? is there a way to change the phone so it doesn't think it's a rogers and not roaming or something?
Are you sure you have the Bell APN Settings and not the Rogers Settings in the phone?
Settings -> Wireless Control -> Mobile Network Settings -> Access Point Names
If it says Rogers you're Roaming on the Rogers Network.
I put in the bell APN. I don't think we can even roam on rogers network, wouldn't work. Either way, it's the Bell APN.
I don't have a clue as to the differences between Bell and Rogers sims... but I can tell you that my HTC Magic, on Rogers, with a Rogers sim (duh), running Amon_RA's most excellent RAv1.6.2H only shows roaming when actually roaming.
I was in the US yesterday and watched it flip from a Rogers tower to ATT. I was watching to make sure it was not using any data when roaming on a US network. The symbol, lockscreen info and the carrier listed in the status pulldown all were updated correctly.
It might have something to do with the ROM you are running. However I bet that given the phone came from Rogers, it has some carrier info buried somewhere that it is comparing to the carrier you are on (Bell) and triggering the roaming status.
If you disable data when roaming in the settings menu, what does it do? If it disables data, then the phone thinks it is roaming, which would support my carrier data mixup theory.
I will try a different rom on the phone. Unless someone knows for sure what I can do to fix this.
If you disable roaming there is no data, because once in a while it prompts to connect, if you say no, you get nothing. Sometimes my wife must accidentally hit no (its her phone, she probably says no cause shes not sure what it does). I just want to make it so she does not get the prompt ever (settings are all set).
I have a rogers HTC Magic (unlocked) I'm using a fido sim, it thinks its roaming as-well but I have only fido apn settings. It only roams with certain roms and radio's. I can use alot of roms eg. cyanogen,Hero HOFO 308,GYD 2.1.1 without roaming but when I update radio and flash cursorsense roms it thinks it is roaming. I have to enable data roaming in order to get a 3G signal. as a fido user I dial *#123# to see if I'm in my local zone zone. A fido tech rep told me that most unlocked phones indicate roaming because of the phones hardware programing. The hard programing of the phones checks the sim and sees that it is using a diff sim card and starts indicating roaming when in fact you are not. A rogers salesman also told me the same thing. He said as long as your carrier is displayed on your phone homescreen then you are good.
I have the AT&T Tilt, not running the AT&T ROM. I've tested a few different SIM cards on my phone and here's what I've found:
Rogers: Roaming works correctly. In Canada, no roaming indicator, in the USA, roaming is indicated correctly.
Telus & Bell (HSPA): Roaming indicator always on.
I've heard that this may be due to the SIM card listing more than one Mobile Network Code: 302361, 302653, 302657 (original Telus CDMA networks, not compatible with the phone or any kind of SIM-based network so it's uncertain why it would be on the SIM card), PLUS the HSPA network code 302880. It's possible that the phone is not reading that far into the list on the SIM and therefore does not know that 302880 is a home network.
Tilt 2 Roaming Triangle and telus
I'm on Telus and have a Tilt2. The original ROM that came with the unit didn't show the roaming triangle. I have attached some screen captures of the ROM. I've attached a copy of the registry (Remove the .cab it was the only way I could get it to upload).
I'm now running Jackos rom and it does show the roaming triangle.
Hopefully somebody can find where the settings are located and hopefully it's contained in the registry.
Have the same problem on the Stocks ROGERS 1.5 Rom. Sales associate said you should not get roaming charges since you aren't actually roaming and if you do, just contact your phone provider.
rogers htc dream unlocked now on roaming?
i also have a htc dream from rogers unlocked not rooted and my bell sims card works like my phone calls and my text but i can't get my data to work and when i click on the apns theres not thing and i am not able to adjust anything in there, if anyone can help it would be great, so pretty much the bell sims card works but i cant use my data and it says im roaming

If you aren't outside of Canada and you get the roaming symbol; they can not charge you roaming fees.
Roger and Telus PLMN Compared
I'm not sure if this will help,
I have attached a picture of the PLMN from a Rogers sim and a Telus sim
Maybe someone knows how to adjust the information on these lists.

The phone companies in Canada must be less uptight about unlocked/rooted phones
If you asked those questions to a t-mobile or at&t rep, they would straight up refuse to talk to you
American cell phone companies are still stuck in the "Ma Bell" mentality, where everything that touches their network must be under their control
anyone figure out a fix? I'm having these roaming issues as well on the bell network with unlocked at&t phone.
I have Same probleme Here, Bell on a AT&T Tilt 2 phone, Always get Roaming message.
any registry edit or mod available to make it work without these message ?

I searched around to a fairly moderate extent and I have found many people with the same problem, yet I can't find any resolution to this issue.
I'm not even sure where the issue lays. Is it with the hardware/firmware? SIM card? Windows Mobile? Is it the rilphone.dll? or maybe some registry entry. Maybe it's on the Bell network side?
Someone told me they put a Rogers SIM into their Fuze and it didn't show up as roaming, yet when they put a Bell SIM in, it's back to roaming. So what's the difference between Bell and Rogers?
Here's a question for anyone who has this problem, when you boot android does it still show as roaming?
Has anyone tried roaming with the DVP internationally yet? I'm currently in the Mexico City area and after arriving was surprised to find that I am completely unable to connect to any network (for voice specifically, I'm not attempting to data roam). Where I usually see the signal strength bars I instead see a "no" symbol and when I go to settings->cellular the active network simply says "no network found". The interesting thing about this is that when I attempt to locate a network from the network selection dropdown box I do see a few listed (Mx Telcel GSM, movistar) but when I select them the active network still says "no network found".
I considered that maybe this was a T-Mobile issue so I put my SIM into a Galaxy S and sure enough, it works. This has me worried that maybe this is another undocumented DVP issue, and I don't really see anything else in the settings that I can try. I know the DVP hasn't been around very long and I might be one of the first to take this out of the US but if anyone gets a chance to confirm or deny these findings that would help.

It sounds like you are trying to use a non-Tmobile SIM card. The Venue Pro is locked to T-Mobile USA. See discussion at this thread:

No, it's definitely a T-Mobile SIM. And as I said, it has no problem connecting to a network when used in another phone.
Hey everyone,
I have a s5 that i bought in Greece while i was there. i have used it in Greece, Istanbul, and Spain with no problems, however when i returned to Canada i cant seem to get it to connect to the data network here. I am on Fido and i have tried all the various APN configurations that i could find on their support site. i have even left the phone with the store for a few hours to try and get it working and they had no luck. i know that its not teh network or the sim card because i have tried the sim card in a few other phones and it works fine.
Now this is the part that is somewhat confusing to me, I can call and sent text messages.... but anything that requires data, no dice.....
Anyone have any ideas?
Samsung support has been no help BTW. as soon as they see that its a European device they essentially say Oh, i dont have to do anything, call Samsung Europe... obviously that would be a really expensive call.
I had a similar problem with my S3 before and the way I fixed it was to find the correct APN settings and create a new APN setting page and fill it out, dont edit one that is already given to you but create another one and fill it with the correct apn settings which you can get from the fido stores. Have you had any problems with calling and receiving calls ? Let me know if this works.
i have done everything that i can think of as far as apn settings goes. i have reset to default apn settings, delete all the apns, and manually entered ones from customer service, deleted those and nothing... it seems like its an apn related problem, because i can see the network. in the about phone and status section i can see that there is an LTE network available, but my phone just doesnt want to connect to it..... ARGHHH

Does your provider use the 2600 frequency (band 7) where you live?, if not you can`t get 4G mate because the rest of the Canadian bands are not supported bij the G900F.
i get that, but im not getting ANY data. i should at the very least get 3G. the 900F has both of Fido's GSM bands 850, 1900

Did you try a friends simcard?, maybe yours is faulty somehow. Or maybe a data factory reset/reflash the stock rom may solve the issue.

Sorry, i kinda posted this like a noob would. i should have known better. i have tried the sim card in my old phone that i had before a samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket and it works fine.
I just posted this on the fido forums.
Hey everyone,
I have a samsung galaxy s5 that i bought in Greece and i am not able to get it to connect to the Data network of fido for some reason. i am completly stumped as to why. i paid quite a bit for it so it would really suck to get it home to canada and not be able to use it,..
So, before i get suggestions on things to do that i have already done, BEFORE i bought the SM-G900F (European factory unlocked and not region locked) i made sure that the bands would match up on the phone. its pretty much impossible to buy a phone that wont work in north america anymore. LTE is the only big question, but fido uses B1 and the phone has it.
I have used the phone with no issues in Greece where i purchased it, and also in Istanbul, italy, and Japan. I first thought that it was an APN setting issue, but i have been down every route as far as APN settings go. i have reset the apn settings to default on the sim card, nothing, i have manually entered the apn settings from the "how to configure an unlocked phone page" on this site and nothing, i have deleted all the apns manually then only entered the one APN for internet and mms, nothing.
after that didnt work i took thinks to the next level and did a factory data reset and still nothing.... then i took it one level further and re-installed the phones firmware right from baseline by pluging it into kies on the computer and download mode and all that good stuff..... nothing.
The strange part is that i know that the phone can see the network, because if you go under about phone and status, it will show the available network type, be it LTE or WCDMA, it simply says network status "disconnected"
I can send and recieve calls and SMS messages, but no data what so ever, mms, or internet.
PLEASE HELP!!!
Verizon Booted me from the Network
4 Months ago I moved to Big Red with my N6.
The signal wasn't as strong as my other Verizon devices which I found odd. I lived about 2 miles away from a Verizon tower and on this device I was only connected 45-50% of the time while at home.
After the first 3 weeks I was still frustrated with the poor signal and I read online everyone cried foul on Google(or Motorola), so forced a PRL update to see if that would fix the issue:
I lost LTE connectivity.
I was connected to 3G but I had no service.
I re entered the APN, nothing.
I took the SIM out put it back in, nothing.
I read online that someone else had a similar issue with the Nexus 6 on Verizon and the only way to resolve the issue was to replace the SIM and that's what I did, LTE service was restored.
About 2 weeks ago I moved about a mile further away from my nearest Verizon tower, so I'm about 3 miles away from a Verizon tower and 80-85% of the time at home I'm not connected.
Today:
Around 3 PM I was in the city and my LTE was fine, I had bars, I had a signal, nothing had changed on my end but I was unable to send text messages, I kept getting this message "Can't send message with CARD 1 error 98" And when I spoke with my sister she said she had been trying to call me for the last 3 hours.
So I contacted Verizon and asked if there was an outage in my area, they said no so I went on to explain the issue(s), and I was told by the customer service rep that my phone wasn't making a connection to the Verizon network, they couldn't see my phone and I needed tech support. Which made sense because of the poor signal all of the time.
So I called Verizon tech support. And the service rep said that I need to enable roaming by entering
PHP:
*22898
This did not fix my issue but maybe it could benefit someone else on Big Red.
I told them the error code and Tech support said we need to check if your phone has dual SIM, I said no it is a Nexus 6 it does not have a second SIM slot I don't care what the error message said. Then I was directed to another tech rep and he said "your phone is NOT a Verizon Nexus 6 and we cannot find it on our network, your phone will not activate on our network, your IMEI is not available to activate on our network" I said wait a minute. I understand the whole FCC ruling and months ago this was suppose to be resolved(I read the post here on XDA). I went online activated the phone when I moved my Nexus 6 over to Verizon, it shows up as a Non Verizon Nexus 6. It allowed me to activate it. It took the IMEI and now they are telling me, NOT ANY MORE!?
I was transferred to a supervisor. He said the same thing, he said he would try to reset everything for my phone but still poor signal and still I have no idea what calls or messages I'm missing and a few text messages are not being sent. I'm on call 24/7 but it looks like I'm going to have to go back to AT&T or T-Mobile.
I believe the poor signal issue is not only Google but also Verizon is still keeping us off the network for the most part and only allowing us to piggyback the rest of the time. Maybe I'm wrong but I hope my 3 hours wasted helps someone else with a similar experience.
I thought I also read somewhere that T-Mobile shut off Band 12. Seriously what the hell is going on with these carriers.

I have VZW and I am not seeing any of the issues that occurred before VZM finally allowed the Non VZM N6s on Network.
- I can still make account changes
- I still have my monthly discount.
Those are typically the two easiest ways to see if you have a supported phone or not. I think you may have signal quality issues but I think those reps may have been wrong. I have a GPS N6 though what version do you have?

Are you 100% stock?
Even if you are, you might try flashing the latest factory image to restore phone to out of box settings.
The reason I am suggesting this is because I had the same issue on my previous phone(HTC M8) with Verizon. I tried everything you have tried and nothing worked until I RUU'd back to stock and it magically started working again.
I realize the M8 is a completely different phone, but if all else has failed it is worth a shot.
FYI, *228, *22898, & *22899 do not work on any LTE enabled VZW device. That is/was used on 3G devices for updating the PRL. In very early LTE devices, dialing that could have actually caused the phone to stop working. It's been fixed now so it doesn't do anything. With the SIM card, the PRL updates automatically when the device connects to the network, so you don't need to dial anything to get the latest PRL.
As for fixing your problem, the only other suggesting I'd say is to try just getting a new SIM card and see if the problem continues.
I find it odd that you are having all of these problems. I originally got my Nexus 6 from Sprint. I am now using Straight Talk. I bought the BYOP kit that came with 9 sim cards, a Verizon activation code, and the $45 monthly service card. The sim cards you get are for Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. (Regular, Micro, Nano for each) I went the Verizon route for obvious reasons. I have had zero problems with service and my LTE is twice as fast as when I was on Sprint. When I look at my lock screen it even says "Verizon Wireless" in the top left corner.
I have yet to experience any of the issues you are having. I know I am not "directly" on Verizon like you are, but that is why I wanted to bring this to your attention. If you would like Verizon coverage on your Nexus 6 for $45 a month check out Straight Talk. You get unlimited talk, text, data. Data is 5GB of LTE then throttled. I have heard the only difference is that you can't quite roam / utilize the partner coverage that someone directly on Verizon can. I have yet to come across anywhere that I have not had signal though.

100% Stock, locked bootloader, no root. I might try that if all else fails, I have an invite to project fi. I was thinking about trying it out even though sprint was horrible in my area and I doubt it has improved.

This is my second Verizon SIM and I'm not impressed with the reception.

Wow I might give that a try. I might have been misinformed but I heard that prepaid plans didn't give you the full service as contract plans.

I have been running on straight talk for years across many devices. There is almost no difference. Yes they throttle you after like 4gb or something but I havew never reached that limit with wifi everywhere

The SIM card has nothing to do with reception. Have you tried a new SIM since the problem started? I suggested it to fix your problem of having no service, not to get a better signal.
+1 on reflashing stock images.
Same problem I had with Verizon on straight talk. I went through so much bs with these people, with same issues you had. It seemed like it was still stuck in GSM or something, and the only band that would work was band 6 on 2g. I could send mms and browse the internet, but a phone call would hang up immediately. USA Band wouldn't work WHATSOEVER.
I called customer service and talked to about 6 different people, all who told me my phone wouldn't work on VZW. When I told them they were full of crap, they would transfer me to somebody else. I finally found someone who ended up changing my phone number on the spot and gave me 5 more gigs of data, but my n6 still wouldn't work; I could call out, but no data or MMS/internet.
I was on the verge of saying **** Verizon. I reflashed factory images and everything was smooth sailing and worked properly. I think there is a bug when you change your radios, something fudges up.
The Verizon straight talk plan is nice if you can get around the hurdles I faced. The only downside, besides what I have already mentioned, is they cap your max speed at 5 mb/s when downloading. I live in an area where ATT rules all, but Verizon picks up LTE in places ATT can't even get 2g (whereas ATT ST downloads around 20+mb/s)... so you'll have to compromise.
FWIW, if you ever hear a customer service rep tell you that they cannot change your phone number without sending you a new sim card, that's a damn lie.
Also, here are my apns to compare with yours. I did not touch these after flashing. I read somewhere that these were the old ones, but they work perfectly.
Using a non Verizon n6 with no issues. I had a local repair shop cut my micro Sim to a nano Sim,and I've been up and running since June. Too bad you are having issues.

The thread owner is on Verizon directly, not Straight Talk. I just offered him the idea. I am using Straight Talk (Verizon Sim Card) with my Nexus 6 and I have had zero issues. When you are on stock / flash stock images, when you boot up your phone, the proper APN settings will load right up and LTE will take off. Works great. Now, what you need to do is write these APN settings down, precisely. I have noticed that sometimes when you flash a custom ROM, the APN settings won't load automatically.
This just happened to me when I flashed "The Pure Nexus Project". I ended up with no data. I manually entered the APN settings and boom. Full data, LTE, MMS, etc
Hi everyone,
I've been a lurker of this site for a little while now, so thank you all for your productivity and guides (If I can get this to work, I will create a guide myself to share ) I recently purchased a Brand New Sprint Galaxy S5 (SM-G900P) with the hopes of unlocking it and using it on Straight Talk AT&T's network. I've made incredible progress so far, but I feel like I'm missing something. Up to this point I've spent countless hours online reading about this device and troubleshooting it.
Current Issue: Phone will not contact any GSM network. I have the sim card in and it just says no service. I know this is only on GSM networks because I disabled all CDMA bands using DFS. All AT&T bands are active and I believe the Galaxy S5 supports almost every band available. APN Settings are set correctly.
Things I have done / tried:
Using Cyanogenmod13 KLTE ROM, Cyanogenmod12.1 SPR ROM, Unofficial CM13 SPR ROM. Also, tried using a "stock?" 4.4.4 ROM that was a little glitchy, but worked nonetheless (tried using SSU.apk here, but afterwards it seemed to sim-lock my phone by giving "Invalid SIM"
Phone unlocked with IDoneApps (no more invalid sim) IDoneApps says its for International and Domestic.
I paid for a Network Access Code and registered the phone with Straight Talk and attempted to transfer the service over (not sure if this is necessary as I am using a GSM SIM, which still works fine in my other phone, perfect service)
Also, on the stock ROM it keeps trying to "Activate the device" and won't be able to. Sometimes the phone goes into roaming and when I call it sends me to Verizon Wireless Customer Service (not sure why on this)
Phone will receive service fine when set to Automatic or CDMA LTE. If I attempt to call a phone I will get "Your account is not authorized to make calls to this phone number" with a mans voice.
-Do I need to do something with Sprint to go forward?
SOLVED IT:
Had to enable the "GCF Setting" on the phone.
YouTube Video: "How to enbale GFC settings on any Samsung Galaxy " - This guide worked flawlessly.
Now all I need to do in order to have perfect service on this SM-G900P on AT&T is to enable the rest of the AT&T LTE Bands on it.
Hey, I know this is necro'ing but I hope you are still around.....
I'm in the same situation as this post right now...I have have a SM-G900P (Sprint Galaxy S5), now activated through Straight Talk, but my data doesn't work when using CM13. I was wondering more what you mean by your GCF settings and maybe some quick tips to get 4G/LTE while on CM (Preferably 13+). Stock Rom I get LTE just fine, but for some reason it gives me this *FUGLY* Creedo mvno app suite when I do a fresh restore of stock rom, and just the whole touchwhiz thing sucks in general. I'd much prefer CM or any other custom ROM that cuts out the BS but gives me data.

no worries about necro'ing a thread, im not sure why some folks get bent out of shape about it :/ anyways, what service provider are you using via straight talk? they use all of the major 4 (vzw, at&t, tmob and sprint)
the basic answer to your question is APN settings. did you ever have data working with str8 talk? if so, your gcf settings dont need to be fiddled with, if not, then you have some tinkering to do. not at all difficult really, just some button presses

Well, the only band that identifies when I actually have a working data connection (tops I get is 3G) says Sprint. So I think that's who they're routing me through. I'm not a total rookie when it comes to this, but I don't know how to change the radio bands outside of what apps like Radio Switcher do (which actually just gives me a short cut to quasi-service mode settings in CM).
I get the cell data to read LTE on stock, but it's gross touchwiz and it never seems to get GOOD signal, two bars of LTE was the most in Milwuakee suburbs, an area I'd assume would be swimming in 4G/LTE. I'd much rather use CM for the customization (or any more "purer" android ROMS). If I select CMDA auto PRL I get a solid 3G and all voice/text/data services work. But any other option that includes LTE drops my data entirely.
Edit: I just realized I repeated myself lol. I've made a few posts on various forums about this. Kind of forgotten what info I've provided where. Sorry for the redundancy.

i dont have any experience with the sprint flavor of straight talk service, but it should be on the same LTE bands as normal sprint. shouldnt have to monkey with anything tho. ill have to look more when i get home

Ok, I reread your op and it said that you're using at&t. Are you sim unlocked? If not, Mr @stifilz, do you think you could hook this guy up? He has a proven track record of unlocking S5s
Just a heads up I'm not OP, that's @aventurer. I just happened to find a very similar situation. Probably changes your train of thought but for what it's worth in my situation, the phone sim came from Sprint originally, and the Straight Talk people said they use that sim to connect to the LTE bands.
