Wifi has problems turning on sometimes - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey everyone!
I have been a long time XDA member and was hoping someone out there could help me.
I have an MDL bootloader and am running CM11 currently. I have tried multiple kernels including stock CM11, ktoonsez, and Chronic and different ROMS. However I have a problem where sometimes my wifi refuses to turn on. I will click for it to turn on and it will say "turning on" but it just hangs there. This also happens if I soft reboot my phone( meaning I will lose wifi if I soft reboot at anytime) The only way to fix it is to give it a full reboot. I have tried with xposed unistalled and all. I can't possibly see it being caused by an app, but any help would be appreciated!
Thanks a bunch!
-Patrick

Yup!I've even flashing Roms for years and have never run into this. It seems like no one else mentions the problem in the posts for the ROms either. I think I'll try to run cm10.2 to see if its just KitKat roms

I also had that problem for nearly a month, your EFS partition may be corrupt, Just ensure to be rooted open up Root Explorer and go to your EFS folder & select all files and folders, after that set all the permisions to everything, reflash stock or your prefered rom and it should be working fine, this is what fixed my problem.

Did it. Then performed a hard reset again by *2767*3855# (just to be ultra clean).
Looks clean uptill now. No FCs.
Now the steps I think should be performed are (in order):
1. Flash a custom kernel (SpeedMod for eg.)
2. Flash a custom ROM (SURFACE, for eg.)
3. Change the CSC to my country (maybe using Nitrality)
4. Apply a good looking theme (PaulGiddy for eg.)
5. Restore Apps by TitaniumBackup.
Now, the thing is, I've done it all before too. But, I dont know which step caused the problem.
Maybe I did all one-after-another without waiting for some time in between to let the things settle (maybe a week or so).
Pls advise what should I do now (I'm still ultra-n00b to flashing world).

If you want to flash surface rom, then just follow instructions in rom thread step-by-step and do everything what is said..many times fc's are caused by bad flash or theme which replaces some apks/files. So try your rom before flashing theme (as boot & few minutes waiting time before that is anyway advised..) and you will see if it's theme which is causing problems.
Also, restore only user apps with TB..

[Q] Have I been flashing correctly?

Hey guys!
This is my first post on the Nexus 7 forum so if this is the incorrect place to ask such a question, please tell me!
Basically, I wanted to make sure that I'm flashing my roms correctly. Specifically, I've been on a flashing binge and installed Smooth Rom, Paranoid Android and Liquid Smooth all after one another in the same sitting. My flashing process, using clockwork mod, begins by wiping all of my data and cache -> Rewiping the cache (this probably isn't needed) -> Flashing the Rom -> and lastly flashing gapps. I'd be very thankful if someone could tell me if this is a clean flash.
Also, I've noticed from other users on the boards for these roms that they're getting much higher benchmarks. For example, Smooth Rom with the Motley Kernel, one user mentioned that he got around 4800 on the quadrant benchmark which is much higher than what I've gotten even by fully overclocking. That's one of the reasons I wanted to make sure I was flashing correctly. Incidentally, I also seem to create a new set of folders on the Nexus 7 after flashing each Rom. For example, I have on my internal storage the usual set of folders (Alarm, Android, DCIM, etc...) but then I also have folders named legacy and 0. Within 0, there is a whole new set of Alarm, Android, DCIM, Downloads, etc... And within that subset of folders is another 0 folder with more of the same folders. So you get the picture. That doesn't seem right to me since eventually I'll have an outrageous amount of folders, haha.
So yeah! If anyone could tell me whether I flashed correctly and maybe why I seem to have those problems, I'd very much appreciate it!
Also, I'd like to note that coming from the HTC Vivid forums, it's a breath of fresh air to see such a dedicated and organized forum! Thank you!

if your roms are flashing, then youre flashing correctly. generally you want to wipe data only if going from one rom to a different rom. but if only updating the same rom, just flash your rom without wiping anything. no need to wipe dalvik as it gets wiped when you flash the rom.
what recovery are you using? i thonk its only cwm recovery that keeps adding a 0 folder every time, no such issue with twrp recovery.
benchmarks, its about how you set up your device, and how you actually benchmark. you should benchmark at highest cpu/highest cpu, as to not allow your device to scale. if you allow your device to scale, you dont actually know what cpu speed is being benchmarked. btw, 4800 on a quadrant is low. anyways, benchmarks shouldnt matter to you(to a developer they might matter though), what should matter is how it feels and runs for you.
I follow that same routine, but have only been successful in one flash, and after trying to go to P.A., now I can't get any to boot correctly. I have maybe 4 ROMs to try from, but all day, only the one worked. LiquidJB , I think. I really wanted PA though, cause thats whats on my phone.

did you wipe data before flashing the new rom?
Yes. I always wipe cache and dalvik, before flashing, and I flash the rom then gapps using twrp. At this point, I'm stuck at the Google screen with one, and PA says setup stopped when I load it.

Yes. Factory reset. Unfortunately, I've now wiped the sd card (internal) so I'm trying to flash AP using a zip on my laptop with Nexus Root Toolkit v.1.5.5, but now that I tried, iss that the rom I managed to boot still has an error that the setup program stopped, and the error keeps coming up, keeping me from entering debugging mode... guess i have to do a flash stock + unroot and start fresh....

Well, mean, I had downloaded something like 5 Roms. Might it be that rooting changed my boot version or something? Not sure what the boot version changes with the N7, on my phone it's pretty important.

So, is there any fix for this strange folders "legacy" ans "0"?
Hey!
Sorry for not responding sooner. University applications can be so time consuming. Thanks a lot Simms22! You've been a great help. Since then, I've cared less about benchmarks and more on the fact that the Nexus is freakishly fast with SmoothRom.
I haven't fixed the legacy problem but I'm assuming (and I could definitely be wrong with this) I could just delete the extra folders seeing as they technically don't have anything inside of them and afterwards just switch to TWRP. Shouldn't be that difficult.

Stuck on Galaxy S4 Boot logo after setting up Alpha S4

I tried searching the ROM thread but with 70 pages worth of comments, it's hard to see anything even if i search using keywords.
My issues is, i tried installing Alpha S4, everything goes well, i go though aroma installer, the rom installs, boots up fine, i can play around with it for a while, restore all my apps, setup 3minit and all my other stuff. My problem is once i reboot, i get stuck on the boot logo for ever and ever. No matter what i do, clear cache and dalvik (which usually works for this issue) i just keep getting stuck. It's not a boot loop, because it doesn loop, it just hangs there.
I'm not sure what to do, ive formatted and re-installed the ROM at least 6 times today, no matter what i do, i get the same issue. At first i though, maybe if i reboot after setting up my apps, or each time i change 3minit settings, but now i've just let the rom boot, skipped the startup screens and rebooted and i get locked up again
Any suggestions?
I Have i337m, used bioshock kernel, if that helps

You are using TWRP and you have selected 'format data' and typed YES to continue. Either way the only way to fix it is to Odin back to stock and make sure you don't do it again. Its a TWRP/S4 bug that has not been fixed yet. I still prefer TWRP personally but you have to make sure you don't select the 'format Data' button or use shabbys or philz recovery instead.

Wifi Tether Disappeared!

So I've tried reflashing the bootloader, modem, recovery, kernel, and rom. No matter what I do, it would appear my wifi tether section of the settings menu on all TW ROM's using 3 different modem fw's, 2 bootloaders, 2 kernels, and 3 ROM's are gone. I have used the MF9 1-click ODIN utility too. This happened randomly. I have found this to be a problem with others, but I have yet to find a solution to the problem on the forum. Is this fixable? Sorry if this has been answered already. I searched for a while on the forum. If the problem's been solved, please save the flaming and just paste a link. Thank you all for your help.

Did this now its back but doesn't work. Clients all get stuck on the "Obtaining IP Address" stage. Any other things I need to do? It displays properly now and the toggle works as well but it just won't let anybody connect. I also remember there was a WiFi tethering icon that would appear while tethering was active but it doesn't anymore. Might have something to to with it... The toggle also wont turn off tethering but will turn it on.
Anybody have any ideas? What could I do to completely wipe this phone and start over? Obviously reflashing the bootloader and modem doesn't do it.
Did you factory restore the phone? I usually factory restore the phone and re root when I run into problems I can't fix.
Also you might be able to do a recovery with Samsung kies.

I think so. Assuming you just download it and hit "Enable Native Hotspot." All doing that did was kill my mobile data and I had to reinstall my ROM.

I think you have to reboot for the changes to take effect but that is pretty much it. I used this method several times when NG2 first came out and never had a problem. Not sure what to say other than Sacs just posted a new NG2 TW rom you might want to try. Hotspot is activated already and it seems to work fine.

5.1.1 Roms on D801 give no cell data??

Been using rooted stock roms for forever, but found myself lacking the need for wifi calling as of late, so I've been open to flashing something with more pizaz. I tried flashing both Dark Unicorn and Blisspop today, but neither would allow me to enabled cellular networks (it would toggle on, then back off by itself a few seconds later). I'm on T-mobile, I tried all three APN's that were pre-loaded. The notification drop-down would show it was connected to T-mobile, but it wouldn't show a data signal, and had an exclamation point over the cell signal. Anyone have suggestions on how to rectify this, or is this expected?

When you say "copy rom into phone", it seems there's a chance I'd loose data on internal storage? :-/

i recommend balstagator twrp to prevent display damage cause of heat.http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/development/twrp-twrp-2-8-0-0-kernel-f2fs-tools-t2898705
when in recovery yes delete all if you have stuff in your phone if they are pics just move them to pc, if those are apps use titanium paid app that will back up, app and data like whats app all conversations. if its only like pics videos moved them to pc, if apps using the free version of titanium back up ypu cant restore batches, musst must do one installation at a time..
its always better to install a fresh installation that means wipe all.
to be honest i dont do nandroid that is what is called in twrp back up,i think i did once and it didnt worked, it does work if i want to mess with rom and if it fails or i get problem doinga restore brings back the way it was just like a restore point. but am not really sure if you wipe all and do a nandroid restore it would bring back the rom, as am typing i did one am trying a ifferent rom.. ill see if it works..
ok i tried 2 roms 1 stock custom, and cm13 so i just restore my nandroid and it worked. ive selected all in back up. wipe all then copy back the twrp back up and restore it. it works ...
ok i got some folders missing like dcim.well most just copy important folders like music videos and pics to pc then once you restore it copy them back.
