Hey guys!
This is my first post on the Nexus 7 forum so if this is the incorrect place to ask such a question, please tell me!
Basically, I wanted to make sure that I'm flashing my roms correctly. Specifically, I've been on a flashing binge and installed Smooth Rom, Paranoid Android and Liquid Smooth all after one another in the same sitting. My flashing process, using clockwork mod, begins by wiping all of my data and cache -> Rewiping the cache (this probably isn't needed) -> Flashing the Rom -> and lastly flashing gapps. I'd be very thankful if someone could tell me if this is a clean flash.
Also, I've noticed from other users on the boards for these roms that they're getting much higher benchmarks. For example, Smooth Rom with the Motley Kernel, one user mentioned that he got around 4800 on the quadrant benchmark which is much higher than what I've gotten even by fully overclocking. That's one of the reasons I wanted to make sure I was flashing correctly. Incidentally, I also seem to create a new set of folders on the Nexus 7 after flashing each Rom. For example, I have on my internal storage the usual set of folders (Alarm, Android, DCIM, etc...) but then I also have folders named legacy and 0. Within 0, there is a whole new set of Alarm, Android, DCIM, Downloads, etc... And within that subset of folders is another 0 folder with more of the same folders. So you get the picture. That doesn't seem right to me since eventually I'll have an outrageous amount of folders, haha.
So yeah! If anyone could tell me whether I flashed correctly and maybe why I seem to have those problems, I'd very much appreciate it!
Also, I'd like to note that coming from the HTC Vivid forums, it's a breath of fresh air to see such a dedicated and organized forum! Thank you!

if your roms are flashing, then youre flashing correctly. generally you want to wipe data only if going from one rom to a different rom. but if only updating the same rom, just flash your rom without wiping anything. no need to wipe dalvik as it gets wiped when you flash the rom.
what recovery are you using? i thonk its only cwm recovery that keeps adding a 0 folder every time, no such issue with twrp recovery.
benchmarks, its about how you set up your device, and how you actually benchmark. you should benchmark at highest cpu/highest cpu, as to not allow your device to scale. if you allow your device to scale, you dont actually know what cpu speed is being benchmarked. btw, 4800 on a quadrant is low. anyways, benchmarks shouldnt matter to you(to a developer they might matter though), what should matter is how it feels and runs for you.
I follow that same routine, but have only been successful in one flash, and after trying to go to P.A., now I can't get any to boot correctly. I have maybe 4 ROMs to try from, but all day, only the one worked. LiquidJB , I think. I really wanted PA though, cause thats whats on my phone.

did you wipe data before flashing the new rom?
Yes. I always wipe cache and dalvik, before flashing, and I flash the rom then gapps using twrp. At this point, I'm stuck at the Google screen with one, and PA says setup stopped when I load it.

Man I had at least a half dozen good responses to this topic - but my better judgement stopped me.

Yes. Factory reset. Unfortunately, I've now wiped the sd card (internal) so I'm trying to flash AP using a zip on my laptop with Nexus Root Toolkit v.1.5.5, but now that I tried, iss that the rom I managed to boot still has an error that the setup program stopped, and the error keeps coming up, keeping me from entering debugging mode... guess i have to do a flash stock + unroot and start fresh....

Well, mean, I had downloaded something like 5 Roms. Might it be that rooting changed my boot version or something? Not sure what the boot version changes with the N7, on my phone it's pretty important.

So, is there any fix for this strange folders "legacy" ans "0"?
Hey!
Sorry for not responding sooner. University applications can be so time consuming. Thanks a lot Simms22! You've been a great help. Since then, I've cared less about benchmarks and more on the fact that the Nexus is freakishly fast with SmoothRom.
I haven't fixed the legacy problem but I'm assuming (and I could definitely be wrong with this) I could just delete the extra folders seeing as they technically don't have anything inside of them and afterwards just switch to TWRP. Shouldn't be that difficult.

Reboot into CWR (both volume buttons held in) while booting until you see “Vibrant'
Once there, go to Backup and run that. Should take about 5 minutes, maybe more.
If all hell breaks loose, this is a snapshot of your phone at that point... it's important to do this before flashing a new ROM!
I'm sure it's something stupid on my side BUT, all the options i have after booting in CWR are(blue): reboot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data, format internal sd-card.
I decided NOT to touch any of those now since i cant find the Backup option on there, so i just rebooted my phone. Please guide me with a link or something. Thanks. I don't want to rush things.

thats the cwm recovery, i dont think you backup from there.
you backup using the app, and nandroid I think.
also make sure to save the backup onto your computer also!
also, there is a special folder, i forget which folder it is. it must be backed up separately i think. It contains your phones imei and other information, without it your radio and phone will not make calls. back that up. I forget what its called. If you loose that, you lost it for good and your phone is junk

That's actually incorrect. What you described is still the stock recovery menu. Cwm recovery has more options, and the text will either be green or red, depending on whether you have the ext4 (voodoo) lagfix applied.
If you have the correct CWM update.zip file on the root of your internal sd, then boot into stock recovery and select "reinstall packages." You'll be thrown back into stock recovery, whereupon you select reinstall packages a second time. That second one will put you in CWM recovery.
And to clarify, you CAN restore/backup from CWM (as well as many other things...maybe read up on that). Just remember that a backup does not include your kernel, in case you bounce between 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 roms.
Hope that helps...good luck.

You're thinking of EFS. I don't believe you can back that up through recovery. There is a different procedure for that which I can't recall off the top of my head.
Don't forget, after flashing you should wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and fix permissions. All are options in the recovery.

Busybox
Superuser
Data/app folder added with a couple of apps to check root
All stock ACER apps included
You know the procedure for flashing. If not, here they are again, as it seems some people don't know.
You MUST do the wipes and formats.
Installation:
Due to issues with Version 1.7 of recovery, you may get stuck at the boot animation. Highly advise you to downgrade your recovery back to Version 1.5. It seems that some things do not get wiped and formatted correctly.
1. Wipe User Data
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe DalviK
4. Wipe Battery Stats
Note: Optional Formatting.
If you really want to remove EVERYTHING in Internal Memory, at this point, go to Backup and Restore. Select "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media). Enable this setting by selecting it. By default, it is disabled. Then proceed to the formatting steps. This will format the Entire Internal Memory when you proceed.
If you want to save all the things like downloaded files, apps, pdf's etc, then DO NOT enable this toggle, and just proceed to the Format steps.
Select Go Back, Goto Mounts and Storage
1. Format System
2. Format Cache
3. Format Dalvik
4. Format Flexrom
Select Go Back and select Install from Zip File (for those of you who refuse to update their recovery, select Install zip from SD)

Not sure what your definition is of a "full wipe", but instructions can be found here:

I can guarantee you that if all you can get is to the boot animation that the problem is "pilot error".

Well, here's what I suggest. Look in my original post. I added the full instructions from my other rom.
It seems now days, the old 3 wipes just don't do a good enough job, you also have to do the formats as well.
(I thought I would be lazy and do only the 3 wipes last night, guess what? Stuck at boot animation) Did the full wipe and format, and it works as advertised.
EDIT: Guess what? This morning, I cannot flash anything, or I should say "hit and miss". Not even my daily driver. Connected to Recovery I believe.
Link re-established. Nothing wrong with the download.
If you have issues, downgrade your recovery back to version 1.5.
The issue with version 1.7 is "hit and miss". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Well, I haven't checked the comgen1 yet (had to figure out the recovery problem first). Will root it and check it in a bit.
But, so far, I see 4 or 5 language supports are missing from the TMPL. Arabic and Aisian mostly. Also, on install the default is Polish (not a biggie as you can change it).
Other that that, it has a few extra files when compared to 3.2.
It seems I can get 1 or 2 extra sat's on gps when comparing to HC 3.2. But maybe because it's a clear day here.
Also, Acer included a couple new apps. One of them some 3d photo browser that force closes the first time you use it. Then it works normally, sort of. Seems it loses it's images off and on. Nice job acer. And, it's butt ugly. Wonder who the rocket scientist was that chose that app?
I'm not going to mod this one, but I will with the comgen1. Overall it runs good I think.

Sorry. My Bad
I was thinking about the a501_4.510.01_Com_Gen1H that was leaked out yesterday.
I already rooted it and such, but it seems to be a "Demo" version from a couple of months ago. Not only does it have a strange installer script, but a strange directory structure also. 3g also is partly working.
So basically it's of little use.

I get one in a few minutes.
The issue, is the U.S. is shutting down all the file servers due to piracy. MegaUpload, MultiUpload (server end) Now all that's left are the slow ones. Took me 45 minutes to download today.
MD5 df253e3f8825197c08a1f0a0b8c24a81
Yeah, its a pain in the bum alright, some of the slower ones already have "removed or taken down because of copyrighted material" messages coming up (deposit files)... A couple have the servers offline - upload king and upload here.
This is gonna be a major pain in the bum if the close down or lock file sharing sites, and the sites themselves may end up locking things down and removing anything they see as copyrighted material, even if its not....
Took me 10 minutes to download an 8mb kernel... I'm gonna end up a bald man before I get this rom....
And then the download stuffs up and I have start ALL OVER AGAIN.... Then to add insult to injury I have to wait 20 minutes.....

I'm going to look around for some Russian servers. Or something. I noticed one other place, but I have to find it again. They'll probably shut it down also soon.
Next thing you know, they'll shut down GitHub, and all dev comes to a standstill.
Also, I noticed today, XDA is almost at a complete stop. And I can guess who's responsible for THAT!

I found another place. 30 min download, But you have to give your e-mail for the link. Not really an issue. 3 more servers went down today.
Seems all that's left, is the small file hosts, and they're starting to limit file size.
I suspect, some serious **** will hit the fan in the next coming week, The US can't keep going on this crusade forever. Otherwise, there won;t be a site left except "foxnews" and Facebook.

No problem and glad it's running.
Not sure what is going on, but in past 6 months, it seems like we now have to format things. I didn't in the past, but now I must.
Well, it is 2012, so things change.
If you have issues with the Rom, it is pure stock HC 3.2.1. I changed nothing in it. Only SU and busybox and removal of the bootloader blob and recovery. So if a game doesn't run, there is nothing I can do about it. It's an Acer deal.
However, I do have one on my notebook, that has "0" acer stuff in it.
Hi guys,
"Do I need to make a full wipe?", I see this question asked over and over on development thread. And the developers patiently answer all the time. Well you can stop asking, here is the answer.
There is a lot of reason why you should do a full wipe.
1-) It prevents FC's, bootloops, gives better battery life and reduce other unexpected problems.
2-) By trying to save a little time you might end up with problems, loose a lot of time try to fix them, and finally making a wipe anyway to solve your problems.
3-) Some people just flash over their old ROM and then complain that the new ROM is buggy or Android plainly sucks. I don't think it's fair to blame hard working people(who gives you FREE products) for your own lazyness.
So why not do it right from the begining and save some time to everybody. Here is the procedure that I use(Thanks to Memnoc and DarkAdrien.) and is the most clean installation possible.
Memnoc and DarkAdrien's original post was created for battery optimization, I only re-wrote the steps that involve flashing a new ROM.
This will work with every Rom but some ROM's might ask for extra steps (fix permission, etc..), read instructions first.
1- Make backup of your current ROM. (no need to do this everytime, I keep one backup of my favorite ROM)
2- In recovery go to "mount & format" and format system.
3- Format data.
4- Format cache.
5- Go to Main menu and do "Wipe data/ Restore"
6- Wipe cache partition.
7- Go to Advance and wipe calvik cache.
8- Flash your new ROM ONLY. (IMPORTANT: Wait after #10 before flashing anything else)
9- Reboot
10- (This step might not work between ICS/JB or between AOKP/AOSP/Samsung)
Go back to recovery and in Backup choose "Advance restore" and then choose "restore Data". -Reboot again
(if you have problem with some apps, you might want to uninstall them before the backup and reinstall them the normal way after #10, or you can use Titanium Backup to test if they work well in the new ROM)
# 2-3-4 are not doing the same thing as #6, Read original post bellow for explanation.
This whole process from 1 to 10 should take you 15 minutes. From 2 to 7 should take less than 1 minute.
Your phone will have a very clean ROM and all your apps, contacts, SMS, games, etc... will be exactly like they were before.
I've flashed over 50 roms using this procedure and it always work fine.

Then, by your own admission it is not always necessary. "better" ≠ "necessary"
If posters were clear that it is only recommended, not necessary, then no one would need to ask the question in the first place.
I've seen posts telling people to do a wipe when upgrading from official stock to another official stock. There is absolutely no need for that except in the rarest of circumstances.
full wipe is only required if there are major changes in the new rom to be flashed or the user is facing any trouble in his previous roms. Unless otherwise its a waste of time.
That list is a little excessive and needs to be tuned down. When you flash a rom it already formats everything except for "system"

Question.
I've been using LI5 for quite sometime without any problems, and a couple of days ago suddenly the phone started showing signs of sluggishness.
Even moving between the screens of Apex launcher seemed to be quite jerky. I tried uninstalling some apps etc (thinking they might have caused some memory leak or something), to no avail.
Just wanted to ask, will a full wipe and reinstall solve this problem? I'm planning to restore all my apps back.
I upgraded from stock ICS to stock JB, then through three more JB revisions.
I have yet to perform a wipe and everything is running great!

No but 20gb+ When did your phone has so big data partition?
unless you telling me you backing up your sd cards as well which is pointless..

I had the exact problem, same launcher too, a full wipe sorted it. Restored apps with titanium and now I'm flying.

Well I'm sure if we think it over there can be plenty of reason why someone doesn't have room for backups if they are a flashholic, loves music, games and always on the go.
Who knows, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I have a 16GB phone and an 8GB card and, as of yesterday, they were full to the brim.
So- yes! People can have that much data.
Just one question................. Do I need to do a full wipe?
I'm sorry I just had to, but pretty much the rule is if the Android version is the same a full wipe is not needed, if it's an upgrade to the same android version ex 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 there is a chance you will need a full wipe, if the android version completly different ex 2.3.6 to 4.0.1 or 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 there is a good chance you will need a full wipe.
The exception is stock ROMs are usually designed as no wipe, therefore they have been designed so you shouldn't need a full wipe, but if there are any problems, like lag, or bootloops you should wipe, but it is not always needed.
Aughhhhh.
I've been quiet for a while and nice and peaceful.

I have my music, pics, nandroids, titanium backups and the Rom I'm about to flash on my exSd. I pull the card out, wipe the phone clean, Stick it back in, flash rom, restore apps. Very quick easy process.
If you're that anal then you should save up and invest in a 32gb sd card or whatever bigger is available. We'll all need one eventually

Developers sometimes label their ROMs as "No wipe". Whether you feel this is accurate or not, don't be surprised when folks don't wipe.
Forgive me if this question has been raised before but I haven't found anything relevant on a search.
Everytime I reset my Nexus 7 it seems to create a new layer of directories. I've had the N7 for a week and I've already got three layers of subdirectories. Files that have been downloaded might be in sdcard/0/download, or sdcard/0/0/download, or sdcard/0/0/0/download. I have to manually reset the directory for Titanium Backup, etc.
What's causing this and, more importantly, what can I do fix/stop it?
Thanks,
Ted.
this happens to me to. idk what causes it
Did you flash a custom room? If so did you upgrade your recovery to the latest version? If not that will be your problem.

How are you resetting? I have two users, power off occasionally, and have never had more than one level zero.

I'm running CM10 with ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.1.0.
If I install the latest version of CMR it won't automatically clean up the directory structure, will it? What's the easiest/best way to deal with this?
Well this o file was holding 5 GB of space and I want to know why it happened? I had to reflash the stock ROM because of a bad kernal

Sounds like this does not apply to people running the stock rom at all.
Somehow we need a disclaimer on threads like this, so all the folks with unmodified Nexus 7's don't freak out.
Most likely if u are on xda your rooted and running some type of mod or ROM.
And mine is stock just rooted

Maybe back in the old days - but XDA has outgrown it's modest beginnings.
I would love to see some real figures, but my guess would be no more than 10 percent of XDA members are running a custom rom.
That is based on just reading posts on the Nexus forums.
Like you - I am stock and rooted. I would need to see a real benefit to put a custom rom on - and stock is pretty good.

Stock on the nexus is awesome with nova launcher but as soon as aokp is running 4.2 I am going to run it. I use it on my s3 and makes it so much better.
Again though this O file came from re flashing the stock ROM which has never happened to me

I'm talking about a full wipe with factory reset from ClockworkMod Recovery, not just powering down.

I suspect you're right. This probably only applies to users have installed a custom recovery and/or custom ROM. I certainly never had the problem before I installed CM10.
As far as "freaking out" goes, why would anyone be concerned if they DIDN'T have multiple "0" directories? There are hundreds of posts on XDA about people having problems with their devices, but if you don't have that problem why would you be concerned?
Apparently the problem has to do with upgrading to Android 4.2. There is a lengthy discussion at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999214.
I had upgraded with the OTA 4.2 then flashed CM10 (which is 4.1.2), went back to 4.2 and then re-flashed CM10. I think the easiest solution may be to back up internal storage /sdcard/, reformat internal storage, full wipe/factory reset, reflash 4.2, and finally restore files selectively. After that the problem should be solved. Maybe.
I had 10gb of stuff that after flashing a 4.2 rom (I think it was cleanrom 2.5)got sent into a 0 folder and then it was as if it set up its own file structure again as if all the folders that come stock it were there (empty) and then a 0 folder with all my previous stuff but all downloads and pictures that are taken on the new rom with this new folder setup get stored in the new folders and not the 0 folder. I'm running the latest twrp so that shouldn't be the problem and when I wipe I always do cache, dalvik, factory reset, and system (full wipe) so yeah. Hope this adds a little insight

Update your recovery to 6.0.1.9, You will face this problem if on older clockwork mod.

Could be then and my only issue was the double data it was using. I just deleted it.
I noticed this file when I was flashing a zip file and the selection for files in cwm was wierd and my downloads were in file O
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
OK so the O file is because now we have multiple users. When u flash over an existing ROM it makes the admin file 0 and when u add more users it gives them thier own file structure. This would be good for someone who wants to share their n7 but only give them certain rights!!

/0/ is a user
if you were to add multiple users there would also be a /1/, /2/ etc
/0/ is the primary user, if you were to wipe and reflash with a custom recovery that didn't wipe all of the /sdcard/ too then it will probably get confused (unless the recovery was new and fixed this 'bug') and then create a /0/0/ etc.

Nit: Second user is /10, not /1. Third user is /20 - I think.
Im not rich or I would have got a newer version tablet by now, but if anyone who helps has a donate button I have no issue donating a couple dollars to the person who helps me get this done, Thanks. Or just a couple dollar PP gift. better than nothing I guess.
I just want to be sure I dont mess anything up here. I have a nexus 7 wifi model.
I used NRT to unlock and root and all seems fine. Am I correct in this:
I use nandroid backup to backup first
Put ROM file on device (where do I put it?)
Wipe (is this done via nexus root toolkit or is ok do do in the custom recovery?)
Then what, boot into recovery and find the ROM and install it via recovery install button?
Then do I do the same with a kernal? Where do I put it?
Then done?
I know there are guides around but for a complete newbie I need to be sure cause I dont always see a complete fully explained step by step. Just like when I was stock not getting SU to work after rooting via nrt, I did read to flash SuperSU.zip, but had no idea how, then when I found the file and thought maybe install from recovery meant same as flash, I didnt know the message about messing the device up was normal so I was afraid at first.
THANKS to any replies,
Been unsure for days now trying to make sure my ducks are in a row before i commit to a ROM/Kernal. I want to CPU control for both under and overclocking etc. Mainly overclock just a little. I must say I love root already, got stuff to work I couldn't before
1. Create nandroid- there's a free app called something like nandroid on line - very simple to use
1a. I'd also recommend backing up with titanium backup app. It means you can keep your app data (e.g. game progress) when switching between ROMs, unlike a nandroid which is just a backup of your device as a restorable image
2. Put ROM file on device - ROM will be a .zip file, out it wherever you want, as long as you remember where it is
3. Put kernel anywhere on device - easiest to find a kernel with .zip format (recommend M-kernel)
4. Wipe - from custom recovery
5. Hit install in your custom recovery, I always flash kernel and then ROM, but I don't think it really matters
Install from recovery and flash are the same thing.
I'd recommend only flashing ROM or kernel and sticking with that set up for a few days, then flashing the other desired element. That way, if anything goes wrong then it's easier to pinpoint.
Good luck!!

Actually that completely matters. Flashing a kernel before rom is worthless because the rom contains a kernel that will replace whatever you have just flashed.
If you want to run a custom kernel on a rom it is recommended to boot into the rom first before flashing the kernel.

If I just want root access and overclock should i just flash kernal and forget a rom?
can i revert back to stock kernal if need to? ask cause need to find a kernal that has V4L enabled for a usb camera app i use currently to use an inspection camera via usb on my tablet. I guess i need to read what various roms and kernals add. do i need to do both. Hard to know what to pick out of them, lol.
Thanks for advice.
Anyone know of a list to show ROMs with V4L enabled? None seem to mention it?
I have read and see different suggestions around on various sites. What all do I wipe? I have read cache, dalvik cache, plus other stuff. What all must I wipe before flashing a rom or kernel? I did a nandroid backup already.
PirateGhost, Ill donate a couple dollars if you help, thanks.
Thanks.
When going from one rom to a different one all you need to do in custom recovery is select factory reset.
This wipes out your currently installed apps, their settings, but doesn't touch your 'sdcard'
Wiping dalvik is pointless as it's automatically handled in the rom process, and cache is wiped in factory reset.
When switching kernels follow the instructions provided by the dev. If no instructions are provided, it's safe to assume you just flash without wiping anything.
When doing this, I'd recommend titanium backup too. When you do a factory reset, all apps are lost, but some data is kept (not sure on the details). Basically Titanium allows you to restore all your apps with data when you change ROMs.

Yeah I backed up the one app I needed to via TB, I just recently unlocked and rooted so lost most app data anyway and have only added one back so far. Thanks.

No data is kept except what's on the sdcard. Mostly only game saves and some basic stuff. Apps databases are wiped during factory reset.
