I have two of these devices and they both do the same thing as you are describing. They are "connected" to the wifi but they will no connect to the internet. This happens over and over and over. It can happen on both devices 7-8 times in a few hours. I called Samsung and they said it was my router. I called AT&T and they said it was the devices. I also have a Tab3 10.1 and I never have this problem, All of other wifi devices do not have this problem. It has to have something to do with the SM-T230NU. I noticed there was a software update for the device this morning so I am hoping there is a fix included.
If some others can chime in that are having the same problem with the SM-T230NU maybe we can at least get Samsung to acknowledge the issue because right now they are in denial.
I'm not getting disconnects (at least on this first day with the t230nu) but the WiFi signal strength is considerably less than my Note 3 in the same room as the Tab 4. Probably related?
I actually get total disconnects. I'll be playing a game or browsing the web and suddenly no internet connection and about a second later I see the toast message that it's now connected to Wi-Fi. If I reboot the tablet, it seems to work fine again for a while, but after a day or two, it does it again.
check build prop
I just received this tab 4, 7 inch and I am having this same WiFi connection issue. I have looked through the build prop and found two conflicting lines.
ro.carrier=wifi only
And
ro.carrier=unknown
Now the WiFi only line makes sense since my tab is a WiFi only model, but the unknown line usually means an open type data carrier. I have commented out the "unknown" line and will post back if it makes a difference.
So far it has been little over a week and I have not noticed the connection trouble since making the change.

by what do you mean by this? Did you change something on the build.prop coz I am also experiencing the same, I've been to Samsung service center and what they just did is update the software that did nothing but to do the same thing. Would you mind telling us a bit more of what you did please???
My 7" suffers from this same annoying problem. Can this be Fixed with the build.prop without being rooted?
no sorry making changes to the build prop require root.
and commenting out lines simply means to add a pound symbol to the begining of the line.
so for example
ro_carrier=unknown
will become
#ro_carrier=unknown
but i beleave the fix also requires setting your ip address to static and not automatic dhcp
Did anyone try my link? Solved my issues works like a champ now!

If your rooted use an app called build prop editor or some sort. Then just find those and set them as said in the post.
when i did the # symbol it still didnt fix my wifi problem

When I connect my GT-P3110 to the internet and it says "connected" then the very second I open a game such as Nova 3 the network icon disappears and the internet stops working but the minute I go back to the home menu it reconnects to the network
this tab is rooted so I can edit the build.prop but I was wondering if this is the same issue or not
any help is greatly appreciated

So I have an interesting situation. I am currently working and living in a place in BC/Alaska with no cellular service. I have been using my nexus s as a wifi only device which has worked Flawlessly until the 2.3.6 update. Now I find that every few minutes it will drop the wifi connection but still be connected to the access point. I have to cycle the phones wifi settings to get the connection back and thus I recieve all my messages at once.
This is higly frustrating. Anyone have any ideas as to why this can be? I have troubleshooted this problem for over a week now. I have two wifi networks that I can access, one on channel 1 one on channel 6, both have g,n support and decent signal. There is nothing elese that can be interupting or interfering.
And before someone says to reflash, I have whatsapp which requires sms verification and seeing as how there is no cell towers I`d need to figure out how to get around that before flashing.
On a side note is there any way to disable the cellular functions other than pulling the sim card? I am not aware if it still makes an attempt to find signal or not but if it does I am sure that must be at the expense of the battery.
EDIT: I have turned off the wifi sleep policy ovbiously and here are a few more details;

Usually putting it on Airplane Mode And just wifi works for me.. my connection doesn't drop lol
Sent From In between Your Moms Boobies
Thats what I usually do. Ive resorted to using my galaxy tab almost exclusively as my nexus s is now at a blackberry level of frustrating to use. Could it be a bad radio flash? Actually does the radio also deal with wifi traffic or just gsm?
I just reflashed my phone to the exact same ROM as what you've outlined from here and wifi works brilliantly
Do a complete wipe and it should be right, you will lose root though.

Hi All,
Long time follower, first time poster..
I have a very annoying issue with my Nexus 4(4.2.1 and rooted on Tmob).
I use wi-fi connection at home and work and in-between I switch to HSPA or should I say, I was able to..
Lately I have been seeing that If I leave the Wi-Fi area, the phone doesn't switch to cellular data and the connection gets lost.
Switching to airplane mode and back brings it back most of the time but it's really annoying having to do so..
I did find an issue #40514 on the google android code page( code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40514)
Tried the suggested work arounds like "Auto Network" setting and it didn't seem to help..also have tmob in the APN settings. Still the only thing that works for me is toggling the airplane mode.
This happened to me once on my previous Gnex but with N4, it started to happen all the time.
Does anyone have a better solution to this issue?
Thanks
Oz
even I face the same issue with this new Paranoid 4.1.2 ROM for Atrix 2. I've noticed only one ROM gave me consistent data 24/7, it was from same dev altered his NUMA B2.
But other than that, this has been a repeating problem in all ROMS. Data stays on for hours without issue but suddenly drops and never comes up, other than air plane toggle. Somebody mentioned it is with the network and trust me it is not..
but I'm also eagerly waiting for a solution

Yea, at first I thought it has something to do with rooting but apparently it is happening with non-rooted phones as well..Google needs to address this issue..

Just throwing in my two cents; I starred the threads that I *think* are related on the google tracker. My experience is like this:
I start up Sirius on my phone before leaving home (On wifi)
Driving to the end of my development and then lose WIFI which in turn turns my 3g/4g gray for about a half mile
Picks 3g/4g back up eventually
As I'm driving to work if I end up picking up any open WIFI spots that have a login, once that happens I lose 3g/4g again then have to either wait till that access point is out of range or just turn off my WIFI before data will pick up again
It's pretty annoying; probably going to have to create a tasker profile to turn off wifi when leaving the house and back on when I get home.
Same problem on an LG F6 Optimus
I just got a brand new LG Optimus F6 and I'm noticing this same issue. The phone is stock and runs 4.1.2
Anyone found a solution?
the issue continue in n4 with 4.4?
I purchased the blue S4 from Best buy about a month ago. It lasted 3 days and then started giving me errors (like authentication error occurred or disconnected due to slow network) when using my Wifi on the 5ghz band only. The 2.4ghz always seems fine. I have to use 5ghz though because our baby monitor kills the 2.4ghz band. I took it back to Best buy got another one. That one lasted about 17 days and then I started to get the same Wifi issue.
So last night I went back again and got another one. The Wifi issue started within hours. Im on my 3rd one now.
I have reset the router to factory. I tried with an open network (no password required) and still get the same errors.
To top it off, my wife has the purple S4 and she has no issues at all.
I'm torn at what to do. Get a 4th one, try another color, or go back to the htc one.

I've been getting the same error lately as well. I just picked up my dual band router thinking it'd be a good update from my old 802.11g one. I'm not sure it's the phone or some settings I have to dig through to make things work?!
Pretty annoying right now though.

I read somewhere that turning off WMM cuts your router speed down to 54mb
Here is another update. Im now on my 4th one. It started dropping the 5ghz band again so i took the mk2 update. Still cant stay connected to the 5ghz ban.
So tonight i took back my netgear n900 router and upgraded to the netgear ac6300. Nice router but no change. It connects fine to 2.4 but not 5.
My wifes purple s4 still is cruising along without problems on 5ghz.
I have been trying to duplicate this issue in my home, I have not been able to except when I use the same channel as my neighbor. Have any of you used WIFI Analyzer from the Market to make sure you are not receiving drops due to another carrier over riding your own? Also, if you have a ROKU 3 in your home check the channel as well, I have seen this cause some problems. My channel is on 161 with with QOS WMM support on.

I did use WIFI Analyzer and I don't have anyone around me with 5ghz networks to even worry about. Last night with the new router, I updated to the latest firmware, tried WMM on or off, tried with and without a password, and I tried multiple channels. I could not connect to 5ghz for the life of me.
Logged into the 2.4ghz and it connected in less than a second. I just don't get it.
I'd like to find out why this happening too. I've played around with all the router settings as well and no dice. I have a netgear ac1200 and it'd be nice to use the 5ghz

Guys, I've been having the same issue and just gave up a few months ago, just working off the 2.4. I realized it's not the router, when I was in the car trying to use the Hotspot and no one could connect. They were able to before all this started. After fiddling with it for quite a while I realized that it was transmitting at 5ghz. I switched to 2.4 and everything came up. Definitely the phone.
I got the same problem with my note 3 (n9005) on every rom since 5.0.
I can see the AC WiFis, but I'm unable to connect. It makes no difference, choosing another channel or trying it in another network.
The behaviour: it tries to connect, (connecting..) after not even a half second, it just falls back into the state like I newer tried to connect (password is saved, and it don't says, it's a wrong password entered.) If I enter a wrong password, it tells me to reenter the correct password.
Any suggestions, what it could be?..
Thanks in advance
Ok before I begin with this thread I'd like to say although I'm a new user, I have been on XDA for quite some time. My old account information has been lost.
Basically, my WiFi on my SGS4 I9505 is working when I'm at home, but I can't connect to the one at work. It used to work flawlessly, connected without me clicking the buttons, but now it says "Connecting" then straight back to "Saved"
What have I tried?
- New roms, different Android releases
- Searching forums
- Completely re-flashing the stock firmware via Odin
- Multiple modems via Odin
No matter what I do, I can connect at my home modem but not my work one, all of my work colleges are connected, I've had my friend try connect it (he was the man who introduced me to flashing ect) and he hasn't a clue.
Any advice would be appreciated & the reason I'm creating an entirely new thread is due to the fact my WiFi works at home so it's not just a bug there. Thanks.

Same exact thing happening to my S4 SPH-L720 (Sprint). Using NegaliteROM 4.4
Tried:
-Re-flashing ROM
-Updating PRL & Profile
-"Forget Network" and re-typed password (confirmed with IT dept password hasn't changed)
- Cleared google account ("Backup and reset" portion) then re-synced after failed login.
And as irscotty stated, wifi works EVERYWHERE else and it just goes straight to "Saved Secured"
Is there a way to reflash the Wifi card to an older Firmware? I don't recall updating it manually, and I believe that is the only way to update it (correct me if i'm wrong). If so, is this even advisable....
Thanks
The only other thing I can think is perhaps the contract provider has cut down the WiFi limitations?
Not sure if that's even possible but every other modem I connect to is just a few feet away, the one at work is perhaps 5-8 metres. But was working 100% prior to this, and the signal strength is saying "Strong" just wont connect

Yeah I'm literally 1 yard away from the router. What do you mean by cutting down on limitations? Blocking the amount of mac id's from the router homepage ?
No it has been known in the past for your data providers to cut down your WiFi range to force you into using their data, as opposed to WiFi.
Although to my knowledge, this can only be done through an OTA update on the original software (not custom)
My current solution to this is by changing my Mac address and have successfully logged back in. Seems like was I indeed being blocked. But have no confirmation yet. I use a program called MacChanger (requires root) and hard change my ID when I'm at work. Has been working for a few days now.
Good luck

You should be able to turn off smart network switching under wifi settings that will solve it.
Nice one thank you! I will see what happens!

u cannot change that.
ready to connect when network quality improves
We have two Galaxy 5s in our home (AT&T and T-Mobile). Both just started getting this message last night. "ready to connect when network quality improves"
Its multiple access points, multiple networks. Eating battery like crazy. Dropping and reestablishing connections to WiFi every 15 to 60 seconds.
Pain in the @zz
Turn off "smart network switch"
I also started getting "ready to connect when network quality improves" messages constantly as the network connected and disconnected. Turning off the "smart network switch" option fixed the problem. I also leave the annoying Samsung Connections Optimizer turned off.
Smart Network Switch Off?
I just got my S5 about 6 weeks ago. I have had NO issues until this week. A few days ago, even though wifi notifications were turned OFF - I kept getting this "connected to network name" message on the bottom of my phone. When I went into wifi settings this morning, I noticed it would switch from connected (very strong signal strength) to "waiting for signal quality to improve". It constantly goes back and forth - 5 seconds or so on each. This is not an issue on any other device connected to the wifi router at my home and I just tried it at work - happens here too.
I checked to make sure wifi notifications were off - they were - but the pop up still appears over and over. I think that's another issue separate from this because if notifications are off you should not be getting any!
I have done as suggested here and turned off the smart network switch, however, does that now mean that I will be switched back and forth every 5 seconds from data to wifi? That defeats the purpose of connecting to wifi to save on monthly data plan charges.
AFTER noticing this problem this morning, I went to see if there were any software updates - there were (Lollipop). I did download that, but no change.
How does turning this off affect where my phone pulls from? Uses data or wifi?
Thanks for any help!

+1 with exact same timelines/symptoms and upgraded to Lollipop and no diff too.
I started getting this message on my S5 last night! The connection will hold for about 10-15 seconds before reverting to LTE.
Tried resetting router settings, playing with different wireless settings - changing channel width and turning the visibility on and off.
Then "forgot" the network and readded it again.
It seems to be holding a stable connection without it dropping and was able to download a few items from the play store without dropping.
Will update if it changes.
Same here S5 900F

Me too - I've been searching for weeks to figure this out - tried every known fix .... nothing has helped. I've even reset/changed/updated my wifi settings on my router. Nothing has helped. My S5 is the only one that has this problem. Other phones in the house have no problem - S4 and others.... I just don't know whats going on. I maxed my data avoiding this issue - but I really need a fix for it.

This problem was driving me insane......I had it and managed to fix it (hopefully been going ok for three days now) I have a samsung Galaxy S5 on EE.....I backed everythingh up and did a factory data reset. Hope this helps.
I have a Galaxy S6 and have the exact same issue. I have called Samsung, my carrier (US Cellular), and tried a local place to get it fixed, but no one has ever heard of this issue. Amazon Photos was hogging a lot of bandwidth and backing up on wifi only so I stopped using that. Still not much of an effect. Using FB or a video is almost impossible because they won't load or refresh. I've tried all of the suggestions, but don't see a final fix. Can anyone help? This is my second S6 with the issue.
