Hi Im a new user at this site, Been scouring the internet since monday looking into evo shift stuff and came across this site. This site is awesome and I love how the threads are based off phone and not just software or carrier like other phones which makes forums messy as heck.
Btw I am new to andriod software
K here is my question..
What should I do with my Evo Shift 4G ?
My time searching I have came across stuff like "root" - "ADW Launcher" "wimix keys"
First off I know what root is, Its like jail breaking I heard, Is it suggested I do this?
Also what is this wimix keys or another , wmix keys or something that I hear alot of people talking about when rooting?... What information is that holding and why is it so important to back em up?
Also If I where to root would I have to worry about any applications running like Lookout and Advance task killer?
So I guess in all, What do you recommend I do with my Evo Shift to spoof it up abit.

First, let me preface this by saying that congratulations on purchasing the best phone in the current sprint lineup. How are you liking it so far?
In response to your first question, I don't think I, or anyone else for that matter, am qualified to tell you what to do with your phone. The best I can do is give you a list of pro's and con's and be helpful and polite in answering questions you may have.
Rooting is like jailbreaking an iPhone in that it gives you administrative access to your phone. Unlike the iPhone, Android is open-source and hacker friendly, which means that rooting your Shift also allows you to do things like install custom versions of Android (ROMs), apply themes over current versions of android, and use apps that require root access.
That being said, there are some downsides to rooting your phone. Obviously, it voids both HTC's and Sprint's warranties for the phone. This means that while your phone is rooted, you can not take it to a sprint store and get it replaced or repaired. Also, rooting is a somewhat delicate procedure and if you make a mistake in the process, you will be left with a $549 paperweight.
Furthermore, please read through the forums BEFORE rooting and if you have any questions about the process, please ask. Were here to help.
In response to your other questions, ADW Launcher is simply a replacement launcher (the program that comes up when you press the home button). It does not require root and if you're curious about it, you can download it from the android market for free and play around with it.
Wimax is Sprint's 4g service. Without Wimax keys, the Shift cannot connect to 4g. The custom recovery that is available on the shift does not back them up, so when you use the restore function in recovery mode, you will lose them, unless you back them up to your SD card (which is one of the steps in the rooting process).
Lastly, Because of the way that the Android OS utilizes RAM, task killing apps are usually frowned upon. Killing background tasks does not result in a noticeable increase in speed or benchmarks and uses more battery restarting vital apps than it saves when they're not running.
There is an app for root users that does help though, its called Cache Cleaner and is available for free on the market. Instead of force stopping background processes, it periodically clears up space in your cache (which is comparable to deleting your web history, cookies, and cache in your internet browser at home in order to make videos and webpages load faster).
I hope this post was helpful and I apologize for the length. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Well first off, length on post doesnt matter to me, I thank you for a quality post.
So in a nutshell wifimax or wimax are files thare are essential for the 4g connection when it is present in your area. For me we dont have 4g yet. So if I where to ROOT I would need to back these files up, because if I dont, I lose the option to have 4g and then basically I am jacked?
I tried ADW Launcher and I dont see whats so special about it, With the HTC Sense option to have different scenes,I dont see a reason to really mess with it.. I just got it so maybe Im not bored yet with the flipping options and theme yet.
If it matters I have experience flashing PSP with a custom firmware if that helps any with rooting.
I have came across many apps in my 3 days owning this phone, Amazing stuff out there. Stuff from barcode scanners, Scan2PDF,AngryBirds,EasyTether,etc.. I feel like there are other apps out there Im missing that I would love.
So your saying get rid of the advance task manager and run that cache cleaner instead?.. Does it accomplish the same thing in a nut shell?
Thanks for any help, it is appreciated
I would also give Launcher Pro a chance, its free unless you want the Launcher Pro Widgets which give you simular to Sense Widgets (Calendar, Messaging...ect) I prefer it to ADW because its incredibly smooth in comparision.
Task killers are generally bad on android period. Cache cleaner just clears temp files.
If you feel you must run a task killer, don't set it to ruin continuously, and only use it kill single apps that lock up or wake lock the phone. Which - by the way, has not happened to me in the month I owned this phone. It was a daily occurence seemingly on my old hero

I found that by checking out the top apps in various categories, I started learning a lot about the capabilities of the phone. Oh, and go through the settings menu.
Enjoy your Shift! Root and read the forums, well worth the time.
My #1 recommended "maintenance" app, free in the Market:
Android Assistant
-cache cleaner already built in, as well as "quick boost", which will clean up unnecessary background apps. You can even tweak it to run periodically. Additionally, you can access sound settings, and there are a wide variety of efficiencies in the tools menu. Battery level, current RAM usage....too many things to mention. Needless to say, I went from using AutoKiller, Quick Settings, and numerous toggle widgets to just using this app, and enabling access in the notification bar. Haven't looked back since.
I agree with you about ADW but I too am new and perhaps didn't give it a chance. On the other hand I love Launcher Pro. has a tendancy to FC (force close) every now and then but it is very customizable. On a side note I saw something in the works for SPB shell I think it's called and it looks very promising.
Hi all!
I currently have elelinux 2.1 ROM, but I think that's not the problem, because with others rom is very slow too.
For example, when I'm writing a text message, on twitter or whatever, sometimes it has a delay of 1 second more or less, activating 3G/wifi is slow as **** too. Even turning screen on and navigating through desktops or apps is slow. When I call, it has a delay of 3 seconds before it appears on the screen. I can't even listen to music because the phone get stucks... I could give you more examples, but I think is enough to know that my hero works to slow.
But I don't know if this is normal or not, I don't know other people who own a Hero.
Thanks in advance
Yeah it's an outdated slow phone really. I would consider it normal.
Maybe you have some apps installed and running in background? Try to install fresh ROM or uninstall all applications and try then.
are you using an thirth party keyboard like better keyboard?
those are a bit laggy somethimes and that can cause your 1 or 2 seconds lag
and maybe try to flash a new kernel (like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730471) or start again from scratch

Hi!
Recently I've installed Thumb Keyboard, but the keyboard was laggy before that, so that's not the main problem I think...
I know it's an old phone, but this slowness, it's unbearable... and my contract doesn't end until october >_<
instal a task manager maybe?
or delete your phones cache (can be done by apps in the market)
otherwise.. i dont know whats the problem
i recomend a radio and kernel update (can be found here on the forums)
Yes, try a task killer to find out what processes use phone memory the most.
Kill them periodically, or just uninstall them if it's not necessary.
hi everyone
i think that's the steps of solving the problem try it
1- if your memory card is full try to delete anything you not use in it.
2- make a Swap partition and that's the link > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6907762&postcount=47
3- install fresh rom for my advise (VillainROM-v13)
4- install task killer that's help phone to be faster
now your phone is fast!! enjoy
You may wanna consider overclocking a bit. That's helps my phone quite a bit.
may be you've to reflash ROM
i usually flash ROM every 3 months
Solution without Sense:
go and get elelinux 2.8 ROM
OC your cpu (needs root and care not every phone can handle the highest values, ele has included oc app in his rom)
find the lowest working freq without the phone always restarting itself
find the highest freq without stability issues or overheat
after done this, check "set on boot"
switch all animations off
install just the apps you really need
remove all that unnessecary junk from your homescreen, a clock widget (example beautiful widgets lite, weather animations off, free from market) and some shortcuts are enough, if u want u can keep search widget
play around with cyano settings so you get optimum results
then your phone should not show too many lags, at least mine does not.
Solution with Sense:
Go and get a fresh rom,
example
elelinux repacked 2.1 rom,
VR 13 (also 2.1),
SalsaSense (2.3.3, not as fast as RUU 2.1 though, and use Las Venturas 0.4.7 kernel)
Same procedure as above: OC, for me i use 264-768.8MHz and ondemand gov
Remove all that unnessecary htc homescreen junk like music widget , peoples widget, weather.....
if u want you can keep htc clock widget, but do animations off
Phone should be FAST!
greets, S.O.D.
id recommend updating from 2.1 to the 2.8 version. the set the cpu to 176/652.
then install task manager. this should sort all your problems out
try overclocking the phone, i use floyo rom and it run so fast for me
was using villainrom 12 and recently shifted to villainrom 13. trust me it is the best rom i have ever had. i use taskiller with it and my phone simply flies. though battery remains an issue. i am using the stock keyboard and also the stock sms app. would suggest all to give it a try (those who haven't)
I too have had a slow hero and it is definately not rom.
I actually had 2 heroes , One got rooted on day and has been ok .
The other ( nephew was using it) was slow and I always assumed it was his stock system, unrooted setup.
When I got the phone back last week, I rooted it , put a few roms on , wiped everything that looked wipable in recovery , put in a new sd card , setup a app2sd partition ( using rom manager ) .
and still its deadly slow.
If it was a PC I would think its faulty memory so only the good portion is working but I have no way of checking. ( unless you tell me)
also the apps2sd might not have taken as i tried to format the partition after creating it and it couldn't find it.
any ideas?
try to flash new roms .....

hi yall,
i bought the phone used, and its running 2.2.1 froyo, ever since i got the phone last night ive been here reading everything about it, since im new to android, its very confusing for me.
(1) i wasnt sure if it was rooted, but there was a superuser icon in the menu ,so i went root it again and did allow non market app from super1click. when it was doing allow non market app, the phone frozed , i had to just take off the battery for it to restart, then did the allow non market app again, it was fine the second time. after this i found that the phone is very slow for 20-30 sec when just turned on. perhaps it has nothing to do with rooting and allow non market app, the phone is just like that. anyways is this normal? would rooting 2 times make it slow after power on?
(2) im very interested in installing the MiUI or CM7 to my bravo, i have the factory usb driver installed, and the phone is rooted . what are the other steps to get it work?
i would really appreciate if you have any input,
thanks in advance.
Ok. Get you started then you will need to get what is called the LIFESAVER to me. The Stock .sbf file for just in case times. Next before anything else you need a program called RSD LITE. It's made by Motorola (correct if wrong). On your phone you'll need an app called SndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk. Put it on you mem card and install it on your phone (you did push the allow non market apps button in S1C right?). Then look around for the rom you want to use. Myself and several other people are working on a CM7 rom for the Bravo with a working STOCK camera. The easy fixes are using another 2 or 3 camera apps. After all said and done follow the instructions on sndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk or 2ndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk whatever the name is in the app drawer. After that put the rom you want on your sd card. Not in a folder or anything just the card. Reboot into 2nd recovery and wipe your data, cash and dalvik, then install the new rom. NOTE: Most issues occur because you didn't wipe. NOTE 2: You have to use the Vol. UP and DOWN on the side of the phone to select things and the power on the top to do it while in 2ndInit.
And if you would like to know I was writing this on 2 hours of sleep like 24 hours ago while drinking cold coffee and eating something I can't figure out what it is but reminds me of tacos and nachos. Back of fridge find.
Forgot about your first question, sorry, I haven't really noticed any speed changes before or after root to me. Could be another app you have that runs at boot? If you have any troubles just PM me and I'll get to ya. My major project went to the back burner for the moment. I do have an app for you if you want to try to get a little more speed out of it. Like I said just PM me.
what are the apps that increases speed? is there any way i can delete the junk apps came with the phone? there are 50 of them more than 40 is useless. lol
thanks a lot for taking your time responding my post, i do really appreciate it.
after i run launcher pro, the phone have a speed increase, faster then before. everything is normal now.
i noticed that there are a lot of versions of RST lite, i gusse i should have the latest one. right?
i kinda need the camera for school projects, plus there are still things i need to learn about so i will be doing later, i think pretty soon you guys would know how to make the stock camera work, lol
I use RSD Lite 5.0. Google it and it's easy to find. Camera issue has work around and to rid yourself of the bloatware you need to be rooted (which you are) and look on the market for an app called SuperManager. It may have alot more than what you need but it's free. When you install it open and go to it's settings and mark the box for root. Then you can use it to uninstall your bloatware. I would keep google maps and the navigation app though. I've never had a use for any of the news, weather or news & weather stuff. Just slows your phone and uses your data. If you want a true FM Radio for your phone see below. It's a little better then the AT&T Radio. DO NOT UNINSTALL ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE AN APP! You will see things that seem like doubles of stuff. FM Radio is one of these. One is AT&T's app the other is like the driver for ANY FM Radio app to work. Just let me know if you get stuck. Also here is a great overclock app. Don't go over 1 ghz for too long though. Stock is 800Mhz. It's not made by myself.
when i tried to scan the barcode and download overclock and FM files, it keeps giving me a message of
Download unsuccessful
Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone
i downloaded the files to my computer, everytime i try to put them in the phone by usb cable it shows cant copy, i must did something wrong.
oh, BTW the supermanager is awesome
The old school ways still work for things like this. Take out your memory card and just copy files to it with a card reader. You might have filled up the card already? I can't put anything else on my wifes card but she just has a 2gig. She has alot of music and the videos are taking up alot of room. She's still stock but she does use overclock and undervolt to get a little more speed and save the battery. The QR codes I don't think they work for everyone. Search the market for an app named "Sideload Enabler for Bravo". It's free and so you can make sure you can sideload apps. Gives you the checkbox under settings too! + in my book. Can't remember if it requires root or not..... I'll post the link in a min.

Yea! I just learned Script! (If the link works) It does!

Hello.
Recently I've been noticing my U8800 being really slow even on simple tasks like, opening the Messenging or Gtalk app, using Swiftkey and other trivial tasks and I've been paying more attention to the free RAM the Aurora 4.1.
While taking a closer look to the running apps I found the "Wipper App" com.qualcomm.wiper. Well the name sounds suggestive and the qualcomm in the package name makes it sound important but being curious I tried to find what the app really does but google didn't help much.
Turns out it shows a lot xda posts with BatteryStats and similar apps dumps, a bunch of chinese sites and a few "download insert_seach_string here" spam sites.
So... does anyone know what it really does? Is it some sort of task/memory manager from qualcomm?

You can safely delete it (I always do), and you're correct, it's somewhat of an automatic task killer. Since android 2.3 it's even discouraged to use task killers, the system does it automatically.

Well, but it comes on the default Aurora install which is built from the AOSP, seems weird to have superfluous stuff even when dzo and everyone else clearly showed concerns about RAM issues.
I've uninstalled some less important apps, rebooted and the Wiper is no longer taking some RAM, still I bet it'll show up sooner or later.
Now I have >90MB free and the phone is clearly more fluid. It's been a while since I used a 2.x ROM but using this phone on Aurora with the free RAM below 70MB is pure masochism!
Too bad this phone doesn't come with 768MB or 1GB of RAM... I'm already used to charging everyday so the battery isn't a big issue... but lag and stuttering really makes me throw the phone out the window.
I have a hacker destruction on my life. Has completely driven me crazy and drove my friends and loved ones away. Anybody out there that can help please don't want litigation just payback or finished
First of all I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Nemanja, I'm from Bosnia, 17 years old, been following the forums for a while now but never really had the need to register because I didn't have a Android Smartphone, but now I do, and it's the GT 540, so I am hoping for some good conversations and a lot of nice informations about this phone (already found some neat stuff). Greetings once more.
Now, to some questions.
1. I'm pretty pleased with the phones speed taking into consideration it's outdated, but I'm wondering are there any tweaks to make it a lil' bit or a lil' bit more faster?
2. When I got the phone from my friend, we did a Factory Reset to delete all of his accounts connected to the phone, but the Android Market doesn't work, it crashes right on startup, which sucks, is there a way of fixing this?
3. I want to upgrade to CM7 but I'm totally clueless if I should because the Volume (-) button is not responding, only the Volume (+) button is working, I don't know if that should be a problem because of fastboot, recovery or something like that.
That's all I have to ask now, maybe I'll remember something later on.
Cheers and thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:

Thanks mate, been around the forums for a bit longer last night, in the end I did the euro+fast KDZ with Clockwork 6.0 and added Zoe ROM 7.7, the phone works like a charm now!
Many thanks, I'll stick around this forum, it has everything I need for my android
how well does it work im on CyanogenMod10_Final#2.zip, but performance sucks, this aint my main phone so maybe im jsut used to my other LG, anyway i rmb back in the day i used gt540 daily i could play games such as dungeon defenders if swap at 512, and gameloft game suck as avatar, does phone freeze on you?

Well, compared to my 2.1 stock Eclair I have way more RAM when I kill apps, sometimes even up to 77MB but mostly around 55 - 60MB, battery life is kinda good, I really can't tell because I'm always listening to music and surfing the web, but the phone never froze on me.
Only issue I've come across is the Facebook app being way to slow, but when browsing facebook in the stock Browser it works like a charm. So far the ROM is excellent, no crashes, stable, fast, lots of options, standard root, I would recommend it any day!
About games and the swap thing, I'm new to the android world so I don't really know what swap actually does but I didn't download any games yet, so I can't give you an answer to that question

ok let me explain swap in a few words
Swap creates a file in ur sdcard, and uses the allocated space as memory.
swap files do inded decrease ur sdcard life, people say after 2 years of swapping sd card goes dead
another way to use swap
is to format ur sd card into 2 partitions, 1 fat 32 for ur files and the other for swap
basicly swap increases ur phone memory
back in the day i wanted to play dungeon defender on lg gt540 but it needed a phone with 512 ram, so i created a swap file with 450 mb and ran it no problems, altho it ws a bit over clocked not much over 700 otherwise its gonna fc on you or SOD, either way overlcocking reduces ur cpu life , one thing u can also do to improve graphics its 16 bit transparency, but it might get some glitches if it gets ''overflooded''
hope that helps
in sort, ur best option is
format sd card into 2 and make one part ur swap
overclock to 704mhz
16bit transparency
disable stuff on ur phone such as facebook google drive, task killes (use native) also dont use swift key or any other keyboard
