I've been checking the Play Store's listing for the S4 GPE pretty frequently for a while, and it's been out of stock for over 2.5 weeks.
Seems an awful lot like they won't be restocking it anytime soon, so all I can do is expect (and hope) that they'll reveal it soon!
Thoughts? Just thought I'd bring this to everyone's attention, as a predecessor seizing to be restocked tends to indicate a successor

Yeah.. Already months leaking GPE but still nothing, I hope it will come soon, I really want to leave TouchWiz, not bad at all but has a bad optimization compared to HTC, Sony and others... And it would be perfect to have fingerprint scanner and heartbeat sensor working on CM !

GPE firmware still has a lot of Touchwiz/Sense/Sony etc in the underlying framework. I believe this is how the M8 has the working dual cameras on GPE. Not sure if people managed to backport it to AOSP though.

thats not how it works. basically modules for non standard hardware are modified to work on the standard framework. there is no Touchwiz in gpe roms as touchwiz interface and in gpe roms its gone

Looks like Sony is also making a stock android based phone and probably sold on google play store.

"The Sony Xperia Z Google Edition will most likely come pre-loaded with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, unless Google changes its mind and launches Android 4.3 Jelly Bean by the time the handset is officially announced."
- so 4.3 possibly around the corner for us...
"Since the infrared port has been disabled for both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Edition, we aren’t expecting the Xperia Z Google Edition to sport this feature. Anyway, the infrared support can be restored with a simple mod.?

But maybe we could have always the official option to have AOSP in our phones, not that all of them would come with it preinstalled.

I agree. Instead of selling different editions, Sony should just add an option in its PC Companion or Update Service software to switch between "Sony Edition" and "Google Edition" firmwares.

Actually, I think the difference is that the Google Edition has an unlocked bootloader. It seems from my experience on Verizon that carriers are not excited about selling devices with unlocked bootloaders, hence being sold by Google. I am definitely getting the Google Edition, but will at least try out the Sony software if it is available for the Google Edition. I am worried that it won't be available, because I have heard on the regular phones, when the bootloader is unlocked all the DRM keys go up in smoke...

Previously this was the issue, however with DevShaft creating the TA backup you can unlock the bootloader and still restore the DRM keys if you want to return to a locked bootloader. In turn keeping the warranty

Made the decision today to switch back to my Nexus 4. I much prefer the stock Android experience and non of the ROMs currently available can compare to the N4 and how smooth it is. The XZ just needs some time to mature (and if this is legit, it will definitely contribute to that). Until then though, my XZ will be spending some quality time with the other devices in my drawer. I'll be missing the camera on it, but right now it's really the only thing I'll be missing. I can live with that.
Hey guys
So Google will be releasing their own version of the Galaxy S4 ("Clean" Version) pretty soon.
Will we be getting the chance to install this ROM over our current phones? (i9505 + i9500)
Or is it just for people who bought this specific phone?
Thank you,

With regards to aosp roms, the i9500 is doomed, my friend. Doomed. Anyone compiling aosp for i9500 is wasting their time because exynos 5410 is even worse than 44xx.

I live in Europe as well but luckily they chose to market the LTE variant here. You could have imported an i9505, though.
Look, what they release on arndale has nothing to do with what they have in their phones. If I'm wrong on that, I'd request an insight from @Entropy512 because he knows a lot about this stuff.

Remember, this is a stock Android UI - so far, nothing more (such as AOSP support) has been announced, and I suspect it's unlikely. So it actually will be of zero benefit for AOSP bringups like CM.
As far as porting it just like porting a TW firmware between Qcom devices? Maybe, I don't know how successful people have been in doing such a thing. (e.g. if they've got it as automated as I did with Hellraiser on the I777).
Since I9500 is Exynos, the Google Edition is of zero use for that device.
As I said long ago when the Google Edition was first announced:
If it's not AOSP supported, it basically means nothing
If it's AOSP supported and qcom, it's nice but not a huge benefit since CAF is already quite good
If it's AOSP supported and Exynos, that's a game changer and would be what would cause me to consider Samsung again. But we know for certain it's not Exynos, and it's highly unlikely it'll be AOSP supported - Samsung's underlying base software is too Samsunged (hacked up) in the non-GE GS4s for them to have AOSP support any time soon. The Google Edition is just covering up their crappy underlying software with a less sucky UI as far as I can tell. We'll know for sure when the device is released.

They won't be able to include Samsung drivers into the device. If you use a non stock rom now watch on won't work because it doesn't know where to find the infrared.
I hope that Google does it right and gets the sensors to work but at this point it doesn't seem like they will. Maybe Samsung will release the drivers someday

As far as I saw the GT-I9505 (Snapdragon version) has good developer support! It even has official CM (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Jfltexx_Info), I just won't be able to tell you about experience with it because after I flashed the 4.3 Leak I'm happy with it and didn't change , I can tell you that it runs amazingly anyway \m/. Also your device is from the last year, so it's still a nice thing. If you really want to get a new phone now, S4 is good enough !

Unlike the i9505,no stable AOSP roms for the i9500 ..touch wiz is just pain..
I've got the I9505 and the Nexus 4. In terms of development the Nexus device will always be a step ahead due to being a stock android phone. Crazy amount of roms and kernels. I find the N4 faster and smoother in day to day operation as it optimises the software perfectly. The Galaxy bare in mind has better camera, expandable storage, bigger screen, 1080p not that big a difference, removable battery.
Down to you I'm happy with both devices. But use my Galaxy as a daily driver due to better camera and such.

Black one for sure. It's a sexy device. It just works so well. The speed on custom roms like Rasbean is great. Plus you get the latest software updates to android. The roms are better than the GE of the roms as Google upload a version for developers to tweak so you get many more custom roms based on their sources or CM etc. If it had a better camera and that it'd be my main device Nexus 5 should be great.

I have both. I9505 and nexus 4. Believe me, the nexus 4 is much more enjoyable to use, tiny little things in nexus 4 like navbar, curved screen edge makes using quickcontrols in aosp browser really much better where as in s4 it's harder to trigger thr quickcontrols since the screen is not level with the bezel.
The feel of holding the nexus 4 is much better than s4 with its plastic back, felt sticky and lots of sweat on s4.
And the most awesome in nexus 4 is the vibration feel when you type, it's softer and deep, i really cant explain it and you have to feel it yourself.
Other than three i mention above, galaxy s4 wins hands down.

Hey guys,
Just a quick question. When the Nexus 4 was released, it was pretty much identical to the Optimus G. People figured out how to flash the Nexus 4 stock firmware onto the G, and inturn the G turned into a Nexus 4, and received all Nexus 4 updates. Do you guys think this will be possible with the Nexus 5 and G2? I've just bought a G2 because I am too impatient to wait for the Nexus 5, and I'm hoping I'll be able to do it

The main board, kernel and other smaller parts such as sensors and memory will be different chips (most likely) so although the N5 software should be a, relatively, easy port to the G2 I would strongly recommend you don't try flashing your G2 with any software for the N5 unless it is specifically advised to do so.
You can't ever flash anything without modification or porting of some kind. Will it boot likely but not everything is likely top work either.

Im not entirely sure it would even boot. Either way you have a very high chance of causing some kind of software brick which although is fixable can be a long and annoying process.

There's just something about AOSP that I love, but not entirely sure what it is. I've had every Nexus device except the Nexus One, and I've loved them all, and they always seem to be the devices I keep the longest
There's high resemblance between CM and the stock Nexus 4, with CM having the upper hand with features the stock roms are lacking (e.g. the latest added call blocking). So, we're in good hands don't worry.

Only for the American variants. Unfortunately us in Europe are stuck with very little choice in that department at the moment. And all because stupid American carriers require different hardware variants. :crying:

Plenty of AOSP Roms for the D802. D800 just got CM and D803 just got Carbon. It's just a snowball effect, well be getting even more as time goes on.
