GPS issues - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having a bunch of GPS/nav issues. Yesterday I was driving and using the nav, and every time I made a turn, google navigation froze for about a second and thought I was still going straight instead of correctly following me around the turns. This is a REALLY serious problem when there are many successive quick turns - I've missed quite a few turns due to this BS.
On top of that, it frequently takes a long time to lock into a GPS signal...way longer than it should be taking.
I remember there being a GPS mod on my galaxy nexus... is there any similar mod for the note 3?? If that doesn't work some sensor(s) must be faulty because the phone is virtually brand new and this is just unacceptable for phone of this caliber. This has been going on since I got the phone last year.
Has anyone else had similar issues?
I'm still on stock rooted 4.3.
TIA!

Since you're on stock 4.3 and I don't know of any software mods for that you can try this...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51192662&postcount=1

Thanks for the reply.. The screws were all already very tight. I installed faster GPS so I'll test it and see if that helped at all.
Are there software mods on 4.4? I'm willing to go through the trouble of updating if it will fix this damn GPS.

Baja has a gps fix on his rom but I don't know if it'll work since your screws are already tight. I'd hate to have you upgrade especially if you really don't want to and it's the same problem.
But if you wish to see if that works check out @BeansTown106 thread here to upgrade : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726558
It's not hard but just read and take your time and follow the instructions to a tee.
@bajasur is currently working on the Alliance Rom and I can't find an active link to the last Baja. If you want PM me and I'll upload it for you. Out of respect to Baja I won't put a link in this thread.

I was googling the issue and there are a bunch of posts regarding GPS issues on the note 3, except none of them are on Verizon. I don't know if the carrier has anything to do with it, but according to the all posts it's some sort of software issue...apparently AT&T released an update regarding the issue.
I haven't updated anything since I got the phone, maybe one of the updates fixed this issue. Has there ever been any Verizon updates?

I'm on Verizon. I'm running stock rooted 4.4.2 and also have GPS issues. I tried tightening the screws which made no difference. Only way I can ever get a lock is by running the app GpsFix. This usually takes 5-10 minutes and doesn't always work.

Yes there has, we have an leak NC2 and the OTA NC4. It's best if you're on 4.3 to do the NC2 leak as you can roll back to MJE if you want. If you go NC4 you're stuck. You can have root and the ability to flash roms on NC4 but no rollback. NC2 for some people have had signal issues. Me personally I'm on NC2 with the NC4 modem and it's been great. There are some people on NC2 with the MJE modem, it depends on where you are and your device I guess. We do have alot of flexibility outside of being able to use custom kernels, they're trying to but nothing yet. There's alot of great guides on here and just read, read and read again before you take the leap and don't skip any steps and you'll be fine. I don't really have any more info I can shed on gps issues and I don't know for sure if upgrading will make it better for you. Maybe someone who knows more will chime in.

I'm on the NC2 leak, using NC4 modem. Nothing has fixed my gps issues. Had problems on 4.3 and hasn't been any better since KitKat.

I know it was spoken in a couple of other threads but tightening the screws under the battery cover improved my GPS tons.

At least I know I'm not alone... It's been less than a year, maybe I can get a replacement, I hope. I'll have to go to Verizon and ***** about it.
I just went on a 2 hour trip and must have lost GPS signal like 15 fkn times. Then when I do have a signal, it lags and/or thinks I'm on an adjacent road. This is UNACCEPTABLE for a phone of this caliber!!!

For those still having GPS problems after DK05 radio flash

I still could not get a GPS lock even with the new radio and the DK05 ROM was still to buggy for me. So I went back to stock then back to 4.2 release of Froyo. I needed the GPS so I flashed the radio to the DK05 release and got 12 Sats in just a few seconds. This was the only combination hat has worked for me. Maybe it's just a fluke but it works for me even after reboot. Just thought I would share. I don't know why the rom version would matter 4.2 and DK05 radio gives me orking GPS.
Hope this helps someone......

I understand where your coming from but that's not what I was referring to. My point was that I could barely EVER get a GPS lock until now. I tried the "leaked GPS fix" in the other thread and if it worked it wouldn't after I rebooted the phone. I was simply reporting that with this combination of Radio and ROM that it worked very well. Before it would stop working when I rebooted but it locks right on now.
I am very aware the "Well known fix for a well known issue". This was different for me and I thought it might work for someone else still having issues.
I wasn't trying to be a **** or anything. What you did just forced a complete cache wipe and then a download of new data. Unless you use it daily and unless you have it set to cold start, I guarantee you that your issues will be back.

No problem. I guess my whole point was I had done the cache wipes many times with no positive outcome. This was really the first time I was able to use the GPS on my phone. Maybe it was just coincidence but I tried the cache wipe and anything else I could find to get the GPS to lock and this was the only thing that ever worked for me.
No GPS satellites in view
I wanted to share since I have the same problem...
I am now on my third epic as the first two would not even see a satellite for anything. Not sure if anyone else may be this unlucky but the first two were definitely defective. Third one works like a charm.
I do work for Sprint, and I've seen how shoddy quality control can be for some of the devices, but it seems like they almost rushed these out of the factory. Only had two customers come in that actually required a replacement, as the others were just the standard GPS issues, but man is it frustrating for this kind of phone.
I remember when I got my original touch that didn't even have gps enabled yet! How many years old and even with froyo on it, gps works near instantly for all tests.
But anyway, just wanted to share as I don't know that everyone who has been having issues has verified if they are even seeing satellites available.

Thanks. I was seeing 0/0 in GPS Status. No matter what I did I had nothing. I was swapped out a few times as well but for the capacitive buttons. I got it working pretty good now. Now I get 12/12 outside and like 7/7 inside. Stas seen/Sats locked
I'm unclear on which version is "froyo 4.2". Do you mean the DJ29 leak? NVM. I didn't put 2 + 2 together; you were referring to the 4.2 revision of leaked DJ29.
I'm basically in the same boat OP was, I'm flashed all the way up to the latest DK05 ROM and modem but GPS is still a crapshoot.
At least it's finally looking like the next OTA will for-sure fix the GPS problems. With Samsung supposedly never acknowledging the problem I was worried.

From reading the anecdotal reports of uncontrolled testing here, I've seen no evidence of that at all. Maybe it's fixed, and maybe it isn't. You should still be worrried.
People are overcoming the novel problem particular to installing the leaked version. This problem, apparently an artifact of the way the leaked firmware is installed, was breaking GPS completely at the outset.
But that is not the same thing as saying that Samsung has fixed the longstanding GPS bug on the Epic. In fact, having the GPS work initially is a symptom perfectly consistent with that bug. (You can get the same effect just by doing of factory reset of your stock Epic running Eclair DI18.)
The Epic's GPS bug occurs over time, as the GPS almanac and ephemeris cache becomes out of date or corrupt. As far as I can see, no one running the leaked firmware has tested the use cases that can replicate the bug on the stock Epic.

I'm not doubting that this is a bug, but my Epic has NEVER been able to get quick and accurate locks, and I have tried after countless wipes. Unless it's just bad hardware there is more then one bug in play here.
The OP's situation seems near-identical to mine so I'm hopeful that trying this might actually have results.

First the fact that samsung hasn't acknowledge the problem is not "supposed" it is a documented fact. They refuse 100% to acknowledge the problem and in fact say on the record all GPS issues on Epic were fixed at release.
Second there is zero evidence that the next OTA will do anything for GPS on Epic, where do you even get the slightest indication that is the case?

the OP situation is totally different an yours, it has to do with flashing, which killed the GPS on many Epics. IE not an issue with time to first fix, interrmtant falure to fix, or accuracy, but a total killing of GPS.
The fix implemented restores GPS to the same function state as the rest of ours, generally working with some number of failures to flush cache and thereby no fix locaiton on occassion

My questions to "communicate-with-samsung"

Thought i'd post these here. Others can post theres as well. If I get any answers I'll post those here also.
1. Are there plans to fix the gps issues on the epic? Or is it simply hardware related?
2. Why did samsung choose the rfs file system?
3. What is Samsung's corporate position on open-source software development?

I have a problem where the gps doesn't lock at random. Usually a battery pull clears the problem. Accuracy is usually within 30 feet or so.
Rfs? It was the thing they had at the time. On new phones they are using ext4.
Supposedly 2.2.1 official on Monday will address GPS.... we will see... not sure the point of that Q&A at this time (the next few days) as we have yet to see what they listened to for the build they are dropping in a few days. I honestly think he wants our input on matters other than software/hardware complaints that are well known. I think that will be useful if everyone is contented with the 2.2.1 release, Its not a bad thing to have a suggestion box, IF the issues are addressed somewhat promptly...
I asked:
Does Samsung intend to address the hardware keyboard issue that causes the phone to miss keystrokes?
and
one other question that I completely forgot.
Edit: strike that, just remembered.
Is Samsung going to offer firmware updates for the Camera which is available in the settings menu of the leaked 2.2 rom??

Gps locks fine and quickly, but then loses lock after 5-15 minutes. You have to manually turn the gps on and off again to get it to re lock.
And I asked because it was supposed to be addressed in an update that came our months ago but still happens for a lot of us.

Dont forget you cant lock GPS with wifi or 4g on.
Well there must be enough wrong with GPS for them to mention it as one of the main features of the udpate to happen monday... hopefully they will fix your issues, I have got my GPS to 2 meters on DK28, but actually have yet to leave it on for an extended period of time, dont really use Nav, I know my city from jobs... and dont really like leaving that on, Ive disabled it since they first came in phones... tinfoil hat and all...
HW Keyboard!!! If it does not improve, I will take it in for service. I got a replacement like Jan 3, for my OG that I had since launch week, and aside from the screen fail, my original never dropped keys... not that I can remember... it also seems to be getting worse, and since January I have not gotten that much faster at typing on it to make a difference that way... but I HOPE its software... else I may end up with another TEP claim.

Generally not for long. Leave WiFi on for 2 days, without ever shutting it off. Then try getting a lock. Promise you won't be able to.
I've never had problems locking on to GPS
The problem that I share with many others is that the GPS will randomly stop connecting with satellites after 10-20 minutes of use. Sometimes a lot sooner than that. It'll reconnect after about 2 minutes, but its really annoying when you're using google nav.
I've tried using GPS status and I can see that it has a great signal, but it won't connect to a couple of sats at random times. Very buggy.
AFTER the update, if it happens, those with GPS issues should get an ALL GPS thread like the 2.2 one... it seems like a real clusterfuk as it stands, and theres no clear proof that its software, or a crappy GPS radio, and thats the end of the story. After the update, which claims to address GPS, those with GPS issues need to compare notes, and figure out as best as possible what is hardware limitation, what is software, what is user error. As stated above, other software besides google maps should be tried as well, in case there is something weird happening with that... I dont use GPS much, so I wonder why this issue keeps popping up so much, and people dont collaborate enough on solving the issue. After that best GPS fix ever thread popped up, I Odin'ed to DI18, and did all the steps, even considered going to DG27 or whatever to be extra retentive, but once I got all the way up to my rooted, rom'd setup, got 2 meters, or maybe 1... thats all I bothered with. I understand those that use their epics as a tom-tom need much higher standards of connectivity.... hopefully you wont be disappointed.
I hope so too. I work at several different locations and user the phone as nav. Gps locks fine, just loses lock soon enough, often at critical times...

Possible new GPS fix

Ok I hope I dont get flamed for this but it worked for me maybe it will for others. I just got my GPS working after getting off the phone with Tmobile support. I had it working on eclair and it stopped after froyo. I kind of hinted to them as to what I needed done and they did it! Now I know exactly what to ask for if this ever happens again. BTW Tmobile is the best hope we dont lose them to ATT.
Ok so whoever performed the gps script that is out there, the gps restore app or anything else on pretty much any rom and didnt get it to work can try calling Tmobile and asking them to restart your network connection. You will have to use a phone other than the vibrant. They will ask you to do a battery pull while the phone is on, they will do something on their end then ask you to turn your phone back on. When it turns back on the GPS should work, It did for me. If it doesnt work please dont flame me, it was worth a shot. If it helped then your welcome!
Thanks, any info for better performance is welcomed in my book!

The reason I thought to share this was because like many people on many threads I noticed that the fixed didnt work and many dont want to open their phones and perform the hardware fix. But with this simple method maybe I can save a few people from prying open their phones and causing havoc. But it worked for me, now I get good gps reception, enough to use to get places with.
I've had great success with bionix v and the gingerbread gps fix. Stock bionix v will have gps loosing signal every few minutes. With the gingerbread gps fix, there are less locked birds but they have much higher snr and I don't loose signal. Using waze now with those mods I don't jump around the map like I did with stock bionix v
On this rom im running, i get a lock in less than a second and a stunning accuracy.

I've never been able to speak to anyone at Tmo who would halfway even understand me trying to explain to them the technique you just used. Not to say it wouldn't work but I don't think most of their reps would be capable of doing what you are suggesting even if they were 'able' to do it! Last guy I dealt with was a complete joke, kept putting me on hold and then would come back and say something like he was talking to someone else! I swear he was talking to 3 different people at once, putting people on hold, and not being able to remember who was on what line! Nightmare. Ugh. But hey, if you got a couple hours to waste trying and it works for ya then by all means go right ahead!

Actually you tell them your gps doesnt work and that it did before the froyo update. When it didnt work on eclair tell them that they had you pull the battery while the phone was on and then they sent something to your phone or reset the network. Idk who you talk to but I did this yesterday and it took less than a half hour. Worse comes to worst you get the android "experts" to do it.

Actually my GPS NEVER worked until i spent an hour on the phone *****ing and another hour on live chat until they swapped my phone with what i believe is a brand new one and now the GPS works perfectly! It's definitely a hardware problem. People do the hardware fix, it works, I swapped mine for a new one, it works. I didn't feel like popping my phone open and I'm no good with a soldering gun so why should I have to do the hardware fix myself?
My GPS works respectably well, maybe it just depends on manufacturing date.

[Q] One last attempt before I abandon this thing

I bought an i337 right before the MF3 release. Luckily, I was able to prevent the OTA, unlocked it, rooted it and found a custom ROM that was smooth, bug free and gave me no trouble with the modem, BT, WiFi, etc. Heaven.
3 weeks later I reached in my pocket and it was cracked. Wouldn't even boot, no download mode, no ADB, nothing. DOA.
I had insurance, so after the hefty deductible I had a replacement... with MF3. Ugh. Fine. Rooted, Wanman, I did a lot of reading here. I considered SafeStrap, but honestly, I had spent so much time on it... I was making do.
Well, something is up with this device. I have never been able to get the MK2 OTA. After a while, pressing the update button to check didn't do anything at all. No response. Fine. I'll live with this. How bad could it be? I mean, the popups are anoying, The Amber Alert went off 6 times in 30 minutes, I hate the TouchWize BS, but it works, right?
Lately, reboots. And problems with Apps that no one else has. Is it because I am rooted? I didn't do anything with this- just some Tasker stuff and the Xposed. Then my BT starts to cut out all the time. Car stereo randomly drops BT. Samsung media player plays random files from wherever it finds them, especially the Samsung theme song and some strange subset of spotify files. But now it's playing and there's no PLAYER. I can't turn it off. And it's playing during phone calls, and DOUBLE PLAYING dhen I am listening to podcasts. Some apps lock up. Power button presses don't work. Enough.
I tried unrooting. I tried a factory reset. Enough Let's do Safestrap...
****. I have a 16GB version. Not a lot room for that. I don't want to waste any more time...
Fine Factory Wipe. STILL CAN'T UPDATE OTA to MK2?! Something's up. Flash the MF3 Files. Still broken. This thing is a mess.
So the question is... what do I do?
1) Cut my losses. I have a Nexus 5 in my hand. I like it. I could load ROMs. can't swap the battery, and there's no SD card. Dammit. The battery could be a killer for me. I don't want to spend money, but I am done having to reboot in the middle of a business call because it's playing a podcast over the connection.
2) Take it back and demand a new one. With all this AT&T bull**** and locked bootloader. Is this one just a bum phone, or do any of you have these issues?
3) Safestrap + a safestrap ROM. Any good suggestions? Looking for Stable , good BT support and the ability to turn off annoying **** that will wake my wife and kids up at night.
Sorry to post here with what's probably stuff that's been answered- but I just don't have the will to spend any more time or money on this. $400 for the phone + insurance replacement, extra batteries, case, etc. I hate this ****ing thing so much- and even more because I had the previous one so perfect.
Thanks in advance.
And after all that, still stuck on 4.2.2, the root exploit is failing on my phone (it worked before, but not this time). There's only one or two searches coming up with anyone else having this problem, so I don't expect it to work. So no SafeStrap.
Check Please.
Hopefully that N5 battery can last.

No problem, just remember to back up any apps and whatnot; you're flashing a stock image that will wipe all internal data

Thanks for the warning. At the moment, it's about as stock as it can be though. Nothing to lose!
Hopefully getting a fresh install gets rid of those issues you were having, but if they persist, you probably got a bad replacement (likely a refurb).
Sounds like your phone needs a complete reset via Odin including the PIT file so you can repartition the entire device...
Get to MK2 Odin files
Get a 16 GB Galaxy S4 PIT file
Open Odin, assign the files to their correct spots...
Turn phone on in Download Mode, connect USB
Proceed to flash, and hope for the best...
If your successful with that I would use Saferoot to obtain root as soon as possible to avoid receiving the new NB1 (Android 4.4) update. From their follow the guides post in this thread to get Safestrap 3.71 installed. I recommend Hyperdrive or SHOStock for your daily driver... though your mileage may very.
Quick note to all those who were trying to help...
I really do believe there was a problem with this phone.
In order to have it replaced, AT&T asked me to do the OTA. It's now 4.4, so no hope of Rooting.
However, they are replacing it. I *may* play with that one if it's not 4.4, and see if I can SafeStrap it, make myself happy.
But most likely I am moving on to the Nexus 5 + Pac ROM or CM or something new, and I am selling the replacement on eBay.
Please don't waste any more of your time trying to help out. I appreciate all the suggestions, but I think I am done. Hopefully someone at Samsung will come to their senses and this BS will stop. When they do, I will come back to these phones. Until then, I am blessed to be able to afford unlocked devices, and I will not go back.
I have to admit, this community has done a great job of being good to newbies and to guys like me, who aren't quite newbies but don't have the time to get in too deep. Thanks again.
I'd like to purchase the phone if you haven't sold it on eBay

I have had similar gremlins recently. It's just not a very good phone or at least at&t have made it mediocre. That said, you may have had problems with the update if you deleted or froze any stock apps.

Thanks for the info.
I had my original s4 (MDL) running CM and PacRom and it was awesome. TouchWiz + AT&T mods is the problem. The phone wouldn't even recognize my voice well through my car stereo hands free. (the PacRom version was perfect).
Anyway, I used Odin to flash mk2 stock, then had at&t replace it under warranty. I just sold that one. I'm typing this on a Nexus 5 with a modified Paranoid Android 4.0.
(wtf? PA removed the quick setting button for sound/silent in 4.0/4.1 so I had to find a mod.)
So far so good. I'm worried about not being able to swap the battery, but I love the wireless charging.

[Q] What's the verdict on Lollipop for SM-G900W8?

I just received the OTA for Lollipop for my SM-G900W8, but I'm holding off on installing it. I've read some pretty negative feedback on it (e.g., Verizon), as well as from some Nexus 5 owners who say it's very unstable. If you are a running on a Canadian network, particularly Bell Mobility, your feedback is appreciated.
Also, did you have to clear the cache or do a reset?
Is there a way to delete a pending OTA update? I'm worried it will install next time I reboot the phone and I don't want that to happen until I'm ready.

+1 I'm with Rogers btw
I am also a Rogers customer...
I never received notice of the update and when trying through Kies, and checking update through the phone it showed my 4.4.2 as current. In speaking with Rogers on line and in store, they tell me that 5.0 was pulled by Samsung due to bugs, yet Samsung won't confirm, other than Norway. Have been trying to update to 5.0 or at least wait til 5.1 comes, but not sure how I get my phone to do this automatically, without having to flash the firmware. Phone is unlocked, but never rooted.
I tried stock Lollipop a couple days ago. I went back to KitKat a day later. I wasn't a fan of the way it handled sound with the whole interruption system and such. And I often turn off just notifications while leaving everything else on but it was overly complicated to do that with the stock 5.0 rom. I had a couple force closures on apps that were never a problem before and it was just, well, not as responsive. Although that might've needed to take some time? The pop-up notifications thing was annoying (blocked part of the app I was in some times) and the task switcher was slow and cumbersome compared to the fast list in KitKat.
My thoughts, anyway. I think I'll wait for Google to mess with stuff. I get the feeling that they upgraded with good intentions but got a bit too carried away with their ideas. However, I am just one person so, you know, others probably liked it a lot.
Thanks for the replies. I didn't hear anything bad specifically for this model do I decided to give it a try. Installation was clean. No glitches at all. I'll keep an eye on battery consumption and report back. First impression is that Google got carried away with themselves making gratuitous changes.

I've gotten the update on my Bell Galaxy S5. There seems to be two issues: 1) Battery life. I've been getting 2-3hrs SoT only, while I was getting much more than that before. 2) Sometimes the call audio drops. I can't hear the other person and they can't hear me, but if you call back it seems to work? It's really hit or miss. Currently investigating the battery problem but it seems to be some sort of wakelock caused by PowerManagerService.WakeLocks and PowerManagerService.Display. GSAM reports that Kernel is taking up 40% of the battery.
It's been over a week with lollipop. There was another update a couple days after I upgraded. There are a few things I don't like, but it seems to be working pretty well.
