Ok so now I have a brand new S4. Came in the mail yesterday. So I rooted it. No problem...... went to add a custom rom. (Sacs custom rom to be exact) reboots ok. Galaxy S4 screen. Then the custom rom screen and it stays there........ phone gets extremely hot. I went into recovery. Wiped data. Wiped cache. Wiped dalvik cache. Nothing. So I says ok, forget it. I'm going to Just take the root off and go back to stock firmware. Odin fails to unroot every time. I get Fail (Auth). I downloaded the right tar files to unroot. I even deleted them and re downloaded them. Same results. I'm going crazy because I just got this phone and I can't use it. Any help on what I'm doing wrong? Mind you I've been rooting for years and I've never had this problem before. Also it's a newer S4 that has the Sprint Spark screen. Anything would help. Thanks

sph-l720t?? I've heard conflicting reports about compatibility with custom sph-l720 ROMs and spark capable sph-l720t. Best case scenario is you get it to boot, I doubt you will have working Spark functionality, however.
With the galaxy s4 TW custom ROMs you need to reboot recovery after doing your wipes and before flashing your ROM. Also, IIRC, it is best to boot to download mode from fully powered off (maybe even recovery, but I've never needed to do so).
It is also best to be on the newest custom recoveries, like twrp 2.7.0.1 and latest philz (6.25?? not sure on this one)
The steps should look like this.
1 - boot to recovery and do all your wipes.
2 - reboot recovery
3 - flash rom
3.1 wipe dalvik and cache
4 - Boot and let it settle, if you are stuck on the splash screen for longer than 10 minutes chances are it is not going to boot.
Holler back and let us know.

If Odin fails then you DID download the wrong tar file. Since you said you just got your phone then you need to know what version you have, there are 2: the L720 & the L720T. If your phone was brand new when you bought it than most likely it is the L720T and none of the roms on this site are compatible with your phone. Some of them will work but you will loose features or have to take extra steps to get the rom working. Once you know which phone you have, you will need to download the correct tar file. If you do have the L720 than the only tar file that will get your phone up and working is the full NAE tar. If you have the L720T then you will need the NC6 ful tar. Any older tar files will fail.

You can download the NAE tar file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663619
You should use Odin 3.07 or 3.09 to install. Make sure you run Odin in administrator mode.

tar files
Where can I get the NC6 tar file. I have the SPH720T , I rooted it fine, then tried to get the native tether to work and now my phone starts up and then gets stuck on the Sprint Sparks screen, I've tried 4 different tar files and all fail. I'm using Odin 3.9

I truly need the community's help on this one. Trying to fix a rom that I was using, I decided to wipe everything to reflash it. However, some how I read the thread wrong. Using TWRP, I formatted the "internal storage" thinking that was going to fix my Rom problems.
Now, I can't boot into the Rom or any rom, unless I wipe everything and restore one of my back ups. I restored a back up and it booted, but my data is jacked and phone service is not operable. I thought maybe a reboot will fix it, and now my phone is stuck at "Samsung Galaxy S 4". It doesn't move from there.
What should I do? How do I get it it continue the boot into the rom after a regular reboot? How do I get my radio back?
It's funny to me because I usually never get this careless with my phone. So I can laugh about it but damn I have to figure this one out!
Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am by know means an expert but I think you may have to start here with the firmware files then try and flash your backup http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338919

Thanks Chief, let me try that!
Thanks Chief. Unfortunately, that didn't work. I used Odin to flash the Firmware files and let it reboot. I'm still stuck at the Samsung Gal...boot screen. Let me try manually going into recovery and restoring.
Any other ideas? Anyone?

Have you tried flashing the complete odin ROM? You can find the all in one somewhere on the dev thread, it has rom, kernel, firmware and the rom all in one as it came from samsung. That should take care of your problem. It will wipe everything, or I think there was also a thread somewhere with odin flashables that didn't wipe data or internal sd but I can't seem to find it right now.

Exactly. I'm on the target. I'm currently waiting for this tar that will unroot the phone. It is MDL but I will update and reroot. I hope this does the ticket. I'm going to use Odin to flash it or unroot.
Well strike two. That didn't work either. I downloaded a unrooted MDL tar and connected to Odin. When through the entire process and it rebooted. It still is stuck at "Samsung Galaxy S4".
I read on the Nexus 7 that I might have to reflash a system.img and boot.img? Someone else had a similar experience on the N7 and had to download it via flashdrive and then install via recovery. I'm not saying that's the case but I wonder if I need to reflash a boot.img or something.
Please help. Not sure where to go at this point. Unrooting didn't help.
Try downloading this file extract the tar and flash that in PC Odin. (don't check repartion!).
That is the full stock MF9 firmware, boot, recovery, kernel and ROM.
Then maybe use CF Autoroot, then goomanger to get twrp and flash one of your nand's
Progress made.

leader, chief, ifly4,...I'm making progress.
leader, actually I flashed a previous version, the MDL via Odin. At first it didn't boot as stated in my previous post. I decided to wipe and factory reset. """"Bingo"""" it booted. Now I'm on MDL and unrooted. However, I transferred my phone over to a previous device so I can't update profile and prl. I'm going to activate the phone and see if it works. For some reason I can't can't seem to get a radio signal on it. It shows the be O with the slash in the middle. This is what it looked like before I deactivated it and lost everything before.
I post back with results. Not quite solved yet.
Thanks leader and everyone else.

It says L720VPUAMDL. I actually got it going. I had to change it from WCDMA to CDMA and reset. Now I'm unrooted. and going. However, leader, is there away to update the modem/baseband before I root? Or should I root then flash the MF9 Modem?
if you got MDL to activate you can jst take the OTA update to MF9. It will update it all.
Then use CF-Autoroot to gain root. After that same - install goomanager from Playstore and use it to install TWRP.

Awesome. Hey thanks again leader for helping me out. I'm usually never careless with these things. I use SACS rom but decided to try Miui. From some reason every time I flash Miui, I get the "Roaming Indicator Off" thing along with two signals. Reading the thread it suggest to format the internal. Why oh Why did I try that step. The rest is history....
Thanks again. Learned a lot with this process.
Glad you got it working.

Hi there. I think I soft-bricked my phone. I am running mf3 firmware on my i337 galaxy s4 and i tried to flash Graviton. I was using safestrap and I, like an idiot, didn't use a romslot and did it over my stock. Seemed to work fine until I actually booted the phone. It can't access wifi and therefore wont go past the find wifi screen. I try to enter recovery but it just keeps going to the download screen. After trying every way I could find I still cant either wipe my phone or flash the stock firmware. I have tried kies and odin but nothing works. Can anyone help me out or am I royally screwed?

as long as the phone can go into download mode, you can use odin to reflash the stock firmware (and factory recovery). Check samsungupdates for your model/region and stock/official firmware. You'd have to re-root after. I did the same thing a while back, lost my recovery and this is the method I used to bring my phone back to life, was just sitting at the samsung logo and had no recovery (but had download mode).

Does Odin recognize the phone? Also, when you say it won't go past the "find wifi" screen, does that mean it booted to the "Welcome" screen?

Sorry should have edited the first post. I actually fixed my original problem and am now having a different one. I got all the way through nd did a restore of my stock rom. I then tried to flash the graviton one to a different rom-slot in safestrap. So now there is a completely different partition in the storage and the flash didnt work so I'm now completely stuck in download mode. I have tried to flash the tar files in odin and it fails every time. I should have all of the necessary files for mf3.

If you have the 16GB Galaxy, try flashing this file in the PIT slot in Odin.. Don't put any other files in the PDA slot, etc. It's worked many times when phone would only boot to download..

Hey Nerdyblonde, what does this pit file do?
I softbricked my phone when trying to flip from CWM to TWRP. (Thought I could just wipe phone and odin flash on top of CWM... VERY WRONG). Now I can't get into recovery and my phone is telling me to use kies recovery *shudder*. So I tried kies when I couldn't Odin flash to stock rom and still nothing.

Sorry it took a few days to answer.. The Kies screen was the same thing that happened to me... I have the MF3 version, so I can't install custom recovery, but I couldn't boot into recovery period. I flashed that pit file in the pit box on Odin, it restored my recovery.
Do you have MDL or MF3? If you have MDL, I would be really careful not to flash MF3 unless you want to stick with basically stock until one of the geniuses here figures out how to unlock the bootloader.
Ok so I had a nc1.. used towel root,rf, and safe strap.made a backup and tried flashing gravitron... now I'm in a nonstop bootloop or I'm at the warning custom o's found.... can any one tell me where to start to fix? Currently downloading Odin to try and flash a stock image if it has?

Do you still get the Safestrap splash screen on boot? If so you can just restore or reflash. Otherwise, you'll need to use the NB1 Odin and take the NC1 OTA.
Before you flash again, make sure you wipe in Safestrap (all but external SD) and check your ROM. Make sure it doesn't need an updater-script in the All Things MK2 & NB1 thread and for gravitron specifically download the Safestrap version of it.

i wiped and flashed in the stock slot. and now im stuck in the bootloop problem. it says recovery booting in the upper left of the screen and just keeps rebooting. I tried going in to odin and reloading the "n900v kk firmware" and nothing. anyone know a fix for this. is there something I can download to flash to fix this. Hi I'm kinda new to the community and Android, but I'll try to help. I've been having issues trying to use safestrap to install my custom roms. I know that 3.72 had issues with the extra slots. That was supposed to be fixed in 3.75. In short I haven't reached a loop but have had to flash to stock several times with Odin. I had to remove my battery to get the phone in "power off" mode. From there, I booted to download for odin (assuming you can get it to boot to download-volume down/home/power buttons to get there).
Once I got there, I just made sure I had the firmware version I wanted to go back to, plugged it into odin and bam! Back to stock to start over.

You're running the same build I have, been having similar issues. I used Odin no completely repartition and wipe the phone. I used N900VVRUCNC4_N900VVZWCNC4_N900VVRUCNC4_HOME.tar.md5 and the HLTE.pit file (for this build). In Odin You put the pit and md5 files in (.pit file in the PIT slot and md5 in the AP slot on Odin 3.09) This took me back to the KK NC4 build, granted, I lost alot of data but I didn't use a Nandroid backup either. This got me back to a functional device but i'm still having issues getting ANY custom roms to work. I did flash to NC2 kernel since then and still no luck. Let me know if that helps. I can get the files I used if you can't find them, but most everything came from xda.
PS. you can find some firmwares with recovery and other things added. I avoided these just to make sure I could get back to stock. I use Towelroot, BusyBox, SuperSU, and Safestrap 3.75 b04

i done a search on the stock firmware you mentioned and after about 2 dozen websites and and trying about 15 flashes I finally got it to work. this has been one heck of a day. I finally got it to work. I am in the process of trying to get safestrap and stuff on it now. I already used towelroot to rot it. what version of safestrap do you recommend. I was told 3.72 was for KK. and 3.75 was for the Samsung galaxy S5.

thanks so much by the way. I greatly appreciate the assistance.
I am currently on the unlocked MDL bootloader, and I am running KANGAKAT 7.0, which is a KitKat 4.4 ROM. My phone is also encrypted, which means that I cannot flash updates due to CWM/TWRP not supporting encryption.
The solution proposed by other users has been to ODIN the stock MK2 recovery onto my phone, use the stock recovery to factory reset my device, then re-flash TWRP and then my new ROM.
However I'm having a problem with these steps. I am able to successfully ODIN the stock MK2 recovery to my device, however whenever I try to boot into recovery, I get the yellow triangle screen stating that I'm running software that is not authorized by AT&T, and stating something to do with my kernel in the top left of the screen.
Is there a step that I am missing? I followed the instructions @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506697
It looks like that file is for the s2 skyrocket, not the s4. You'll probably have to flash the complete mdl firmware in Odin
Edit, if you're still rooted try flashing twrp 2.8.3.0 image file in flashify from the play store. http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/jflteatt

Yeah, they're instructions for the S2 Skyrocket, but I just used the general procedure and not the file, I used the stock recovery listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49687791&postcount=3
You make an interesting point though, if I ODIN the entire stock MDL ROM, that could work. I'm just going to write over it with another ROM anyways, so what I restore to shouldn't matter. I know this is probably a dumb question, but flashing the stock MDL ROM isn't going to affect my MDL bootloader is it?
I can get TWRP 2.8.3.0 with or without Flashify, but that app is very convenient, thank you for the tip =)

Flashing the mdl firmware in Odin will still give you the mdl bootloader. But it'll want to update after you flash so flash another custom rom or freeze the update files before it does so.

@ChrisG683 Be sure to turn your wi-fi off and remove your SIM card, that way it can't update. You can put any apps you think you might need on an SD card and install them without having to go to the play store. Once you get things frozen or removed then you'll be good to go. :good:
Thanks guys, I'll be sure to keep that in mind once I get things sorted out.
The newest thing I've figured out is that the MDL stock recovery does not give me the "yellow triangle" error, and it presents me with the option to wipe my device. (I grabbed it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2429406)
Now I'm just making sure I have a stock MDL ROM ready to ODIN in case I screw up my device =). Hopefully this all works out.
Edit:
Looks like everything went beautifully. The MDL stock recovery wiped my /data partition perfectly, and I was able to reboot into a fresh and clean copy of KANGAKAT 6.0. Then I was able to use a terminal to flash TWRP, did a factory reset, flashed KANGAPOP 1.4, and now you can add me to the list of proud Lollipop users =)
