[Q] Nexus 7 acting very weird... - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the old Nexus 7 and it's been very unresponsive lately.
The device is not responsive and when I do manage to unlock it, seems like the device has some sort of mine on its own and is randomly opening apps or typing in the Google search bar.
Figuring that there's probably malware or virus, I downloaded Malwarebytes and Avast to scan the device.
I found several malware after scanning so i deleted those.
However, issue still persist. So i did a factory reset.
Setting up the device was nothing out of the norm. (Other than feeling a bit lag)
After setting up and updating the apps, the device feels new (again there's some lag); Couple minutes later, the device started acting up again.
I thought the problem might be in them ROM or bootloader so i rooted and flashed PA latest ROM and GApps
But things did not go as I expected and I can't find any other solutions online.
Are there any methods to fix this problem?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
P.S. this problem occurs around 90% of the times when I unlock the device..

Hardware problem? I would take the back off and check all the connections. Try the freezer for 5-10 minutes see if it works longer( heat?)

How? Did you actually wipe everything with Fastboot and reflash stock firmware?
Factory reset is not a "full wipe".

Before flashing the new files....run
Fastboot erase system
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot erase userdata
All apps and data will be gone. So if you're rooted you can backup with titanium backup. And restore after flashing.
Personally when flashing stock, I like to backup my important stuff from internal SD onto my PC too. Just for safe keeping. ?

[Q] How to Completely Erase Everything?

I want to do this as more of a starting new kind of thing. I know you can clear the sd cards and factory reset, but does that truly erase everything? And i understand theres also some options to clear delvik cache and others in CWM. Are these caches erased w/ factory reset? thx brah
Odin maybe?

yeah ive used odin a bunch to flash eugenes roms and stock rom if i get a soft brick. But weird thing is it doesnt wipe my internal sd. BTW this ISNT like a serious issue and i NEED to erase everything...but ive flashed so many roms over each other i thought it would be good to give my phone a breath of fresh air. haha
okay so just about an hour ago i was trying to install the 2825 radio. i flashed it onto the phone in recovery mode and now my phone wont go past the boot screen. (tmobile g1) i can still get to recovery and fastboot and all of that but even when i tried to restore it, it still wont go past the boot screen!!!!! what did i do wrong, and is there any hope for me?? please help!

Hopefully you will not accomplish your objective. "Everything" includes the Primary Boot Loader, in which case your phone will be permanently bricked, for all intents and purposes.
You will not be able to access the phone by any means other than an expensive tester after you delete USB drivers from the phone.
To erase everything...you need to go settings.phone & sdcard.umount...under phone storage.format....it will mount back on its own

you'll lose everything on the rom including apps that the dev added. only thing you wont lose is stock apps, but no it shouldnt matter what rom your running.

[Q] Switching ROMs

I have a quick question. When switching ROMs should I also in addition to factory reset, also perform a system/wipe to wipe the already installed custom ROM? Thanks.
It is generally unnecessary, but not a bad idea to do so. Most devs have their updater script format /system, but you'll find the occasional one that omits that one line.

Alright. So I shouldn't worry about performing system wipe?

I think it's better to wipe the system. As I've faced many kind of froblem because of a dirty flash. And I've seen many bug reports on several ROM thread and it just came out that it's not the ROM but the dirty flash is causing the problem. It will probably take 1-2hr to get back to the previous position so what's the big didfference??

OK. So when switching ROMs I should perform factory restore, wipe all caches, as well as system/wipe to erase the ROM currently installed. I have done it that way before but I always get nervous when I wipe system, cause now it has no ROM installed at all and I don't want anything to happen in that case. But thanks for the quick reply

What could happen?? Hardbrick?? A little chance..... Here's what I think when I do something risky. Just Think like I don't have any device if I can get this device back it's bonus for me.
You can always flash a rom whatever it has one or not untill your device can be booted into fastboot. So don't be afraid if something bad(!?) happens and you can boot into fastboot mode. Once I even had no boot just the fastboot it took less than 5 min to get a system on it.
And dirty flash is always an option. I myself had and seen many people having problems with it.

[RESOLVED] Booting goes to black screen!

Okay, so I was listening to a YouTube video via Popup Browser BETA. When the song finished, I tried closing the window, but it wouldn't let me interact with the window. Not sure why. I just figured since the app was in beta it was just confused, so I went to the settings->running applications->I force closed the app. But for some reason, the little window still wouldn't go away. So I decided to reboot my device. Bad idea, apparently...
Now whenever I boot up my phone it'll vibrate, display the Google logo for a few seconds, and then... it goes to a blank black screen. Not a clue why. I've tried:
- Leaving it to charge and rebooting
- Leaving it in the blank black screen
- Booting into recovery, then trying to reboot the device from there
- Clearing cache partition
Nothing works. I still can't boot up my phone again.
I'm running Slimbean 4.2.1 (not the latest version). There really isn't anything that might have triggered this. I can still charge my phone (the charging animation still occurs) and I can still go into CWM Recovery. I'd really rather not have to install a new ROM or anything... but if I have to, is there a way to extract the data I have on my phone now while in recovery or something?
Any suggestions?
EDIT: This has been FIXED. Moderators, if you see this, you can close this thread. If anyone else has this problem, try reflashing your current version of your ROM, that's how I fixed mine. I'm not responsible for damage to your device.

No way of corrupting your data, as long as you don't select to wipe data partition or data is already corrupted. But this is strange that your phone gone crazy like this. Try to reflash your rom without wiping data and see if your phone will boot up

I've not got enough free space on my phone I don't think (it's only 16GB, I got about 2GB free).
Unless I'm mistaken the backup will take more than that, yes? Considering I've got a few games apps that probably equate to about 4GB.

Reflash the same version you were running before this accident, as the newest version requires clean flash. If you want to run the latest version and have your data back, reflash the same version you were running before, then backup your data, wipe phone, flash the latest version and restore your data

WOO! Thanks a lot! Booted up perfectly, and no loss of data or anything like that. Only odd things is it seems to have changed my DPI... but I can change that easily so it's not really a bother. It also made me have to update the Virus Definitions on Avast!, not sure why either.
I shall now proceed to thank all of your posts.

[Q] UI Stops Working EVERY DAY!!!

No matter what I do... no matter what ROM I flash to, and I have tried 4 different ROMs, I keep getting the UI Stops Working error and then my phone is virtually non-functional. The notifications, navigation, and launcher bars go away and I cannot do anything. The only thing that I can do is boot into recovery and then flash a new ROM, BUT I have been doing this a couple times a day.
I even formatted my entire phone, internal storage and all, started completely over AND YET I still get the issue. What can I do???

The only ones that I can think of are the live wallpaper ones, Email Exchange since I don't need it, and face unlock. I also froze the NFC. I wouldn't think that would cause it. I was reading on the internet that the Facebook app can cause it so I deleted the app and we will see.

When this happened to me I used Matt's utility option 1... rooted it updated it n made a TiB of everything... now when I tinker n it gets wonky I restore the systemui.apk n reboot... I know you said that you started over does that mean you used rsd and flashed stock... or did you go through a recovery to do the wiping formatting n what not?

Had this happen the other day and this is what I did. I rebooted the phone WHILE HOLDING THE VOLUME DOWN KEY. it boots into safe mode. While in there make a TiBu of your apps. Then boot into recovery and factory data/reset like 3 times, flash back to a ROM and restore your apps. This way you don't lose your stuff.

When I meant started over I was yes referring to the booting to recovery and then wiping/formatting everything, then reflashing a ROM. That works, but I just am nervous now because the issue persists no matter the ROM. Sometimes it takes a day or two or sometimes it happens even quicker than that. I think it might be Facebook so I am not installing that app again. Why FB works on my Nexus 7 tablet and my wife's phone just fine is beyond me.
I didn't know I can make a backup of systemui.apk and restore it to make it work. I wish we could find the main issue to begin with so we can resolve this once-and-for-all.

Yea I backup everything on my external hard drive (that after I back anything up I bubble wrap and put in my fire safe< a bit paranoid) every week, so that if anything happens I can just wipe it clean and start fresh (I have never used rsd lite but I'm guessing its somewhat like option one of Matt's utility) that restores your phone to a moto flashed like state... ready to be sold as a certified like new device (as Verizon would call it)...

Are you mounting system in TWRP, before you wipe data? For some reason, I stopped doing this when I updated to the newer TWRP. There was a thread on here where someone said they mounted prior to wiping and it solved their 4.3 issues. I tried it and it worked for me. I would suggest you try the same.

Deadliest bootloop ever. Nothing seems to fix it.

I recently fixed an infamous bootloop i had by letting the battery die 100% (yeah I know it is bad), and then it booted. Well i went to flash a new rom and it never rebooted. I then went to flash stock from google. Still a bootloop. tried like 3 roms, still a loop. I then tried the killing my battery thing. Still a loop. Please, i know the phone isn't hard bricked, is there anything else i can do to boot it other than just flashing stock and factory resetting. Thanks.
Another thing, when i try to flash 4.2.2 the phone doesn't go to the boot logo.
Anybody? I need to fix this phone soon.

Yep, if it didn't your emmc flash memory would be bad. I'd try re-downloading the factory image and trying again. Are you using the flash-all.bat to flash? You might try flashing all the components separately and see if any of them fail.

None of the flashes failed. I have tried redownloading and i have also checked the md5's, so i dont think that would be it. I have also tried reformatting through twrp, and then flashing stock. Still nothing.
flashing 4.4.4 separately got me on the starting apps step, but that seems to be the place where it gets stuck.
I need to decide if i wanna take another month trying to fix the nexus 4 or just get the nexus 5. Nothing is working and i think i should just leave it now. But at the same time, i just wanna fix it so i don't have to spend money on a new phone. I have run out of things to try and revive the phone so i don't know what to do anymore.

there's must be a way cause you can boot on 4.4.4 but unfortunately i'm not that good in these kind of problems
but i hope you can find the cure soon
You can obviously get into flashboot, have you tried booting the latest twrp, wiping /system /data /cache and sideloading something different, like Paranoid Android?
Bootloop fix
First thing is that you have use Wug's Tool and flash the 4.3 stock image. In the Wug's tool select the option 'SOFT BRICK or BOOTLOOP' option and then flash the stock image in the fastboot mode. Definitely, I hope the phone will launch without any problem. The same problem I had faced with my nexus 4 and I flash the 4.3 stock image with the help of Wug's tool. Try it I hope it will fix the problem.
