Does it say "warning;camera failed" ? And are you loading the camera from the lock screen or home screen?

I had the same problem with my new Galaxy S4 that I bought on 8 of may in 2013.
In the beginning, the camera work fine, but after several minutes, on each time that I tried to open the camera aplication it had black screen with an error message.
I tried to exit the battery and return it, it didn't help.
I tried to rebot to manufacturer settings, at the first couple of minutes the camera work fine, but later the black screen appear again at each time I open the camera application.
Here is a link to youtube that show the same problem that I had :
Search on youtube "samsung galaxy s4 camera fail"
What can I do ?
I am having the same problem with my s4; tried system update, factory reset... maybe i need to try to flash my firmware. so disappointed with Samsung. a flagship phone shouldn't have this problem!
to be safe, getting it exchanged... i never bought insurance before but it looks like i might need to if i am sticking with the s4.
It's a known problem. Loads of people have it. You'll just have to wait for Samsung to fix it.

From today speaking to a guy who repairs samsungs this is a hardware issue. Reboots and factory resets seem to fix the issue but the root of the problem is the the camera module either not correctly attached/or soldered to the connection so when rebooting or resetting the phone the movement of the device in your hand or laying the phone face up briefly re-connects the module to the device. I'm awaiting my new device as my carrier told me a few people have had this issue also.
Hope that helps

no it dosent.. it just crashes.. with a black screen!
I have taken several pictures with my 2 days old GS4 but in one occasion when I opened the camera and switched from the front camera to the main, the phone froze and reboot it self :/
I hope i only was a one time failure and not hardware or software relate.
Cheers
There are several other topics created for this issue Slow or reboot when opening camera apps and [Q] Galaxy S4 - reboot launching camera from lockscreen
So far, temporary fixes are limiting the background processes to 4 from the developer options in the settings menu and disabling air view options and smart screen options. This has worked for me, I haven't experienced any other reboots but the lag is still present and sometimes when enabling both cameras feature the app would freeze.
I'm not sure whether this is a hardware or a software issue but nevertheless most GS4s experience lag with the camera app, especially those on the octa version, the GT-I9500. I bought the phone internationally, not using a carrier and switching mine will be a pain; therefore i really hope it's a solvable software issue.
This happened to me yesterday. I tried factory resets, going back to stock with Kies, clearing data, but nothing works. I thought it was because of something
I flashed yesterday, but that wasnt it. Sad it happened so quickly and hopefully it can be fixed.

He doesn't work for Samsung he just repairs them independently so he is speaking from experience. But I have since asked another independent business and the toldme the same. My problem has now stopped buti believe could be fixed due to my new case on the phone pushing the camera module slightly in place? Who knows but I am replacing incase it happens again (really don't wanna be lumbered with an s4 with a broken camera)

Were you receiving any warning messages?. As I dug into this problem I've found there are 2 error types. In the 1st scenario the camera would crash and a message would be displayed. The 2nd one, would just turn the screen black after accessing the camera app and after a few seconds the phone would reboot.
If a message is displayed then it's most likely a hardware issue. If the phone restarts without warnings then disabling air gesture options and smart screen options along with disabling a few samsung apps temporary solved the matter, therefore being a software misbehave. It's not a permanent solution but until sammy releases a patch this could be a small fix.

I have the first scenario. What would actually cause this? Flashing wouldn't cause it, would it?

Mine did both loaded camera app then black screen with message after a few seconds "warning:camera failed" then one time the phone didn't reboot it simply froze until I force restarted it. I'm getting replacement tomorrow evening as I use my camera a lot when I don't have a dedicated camera with me

Yup, I have that exact thing. Unfortunately, T-Mobile US doesn't have the S4 as part of their replacement "plan" yet. I'll have to check back later.
Hi, just got my S4 and have tried it for a couple of hours now.
Is it just me or is the phone somewhat sluggish and slow in the animations? Are anyone else experiencing this?
Its like it is stuttering when I open or close a program or opens the menu with my apps..
I have tried to disable some of the obvious apps that I won’t be using (chaton.. etc). But still, it has some hiccups when sliding and just using it..

*s4 over heating solved.Hey im new to XDA, I had my samsung s4 3 days ago. Original not the octa core. I have had problems with my phone over heating when im browsing or sending a text, watching vids ect. Also my phone has randomly reset a good few times, I think because its over heated. I got really frustrated and looked on line for help and found nothing.... soo I figured it out for my self.*Step 1: back up anything u need. Contacts... pictured .. vids ect.step 2. Do a factory reset and wipe everythingstep 3 set up the phone as normal. Sign in to your samsung account then google all from the set up screens.step 3. When u are all set up and have reached the home screen there will b a message at the top on the pull down notification bar saying samsung push. DO NOT CLICK AND UPDATE THIS. I have found that this is the problem with the phone over heating. If u update this then u will also get incouraged to update samsung apps + samsung hub. ALSO DO NOT CLICK ON SAMSUNG APP OR SAMSUNG HUB.. i reset my phone 4 times to try different things and this worked. I can nkw watch you tube vids. Brows the net play games ect. Yes my phone gets warm but not boiling like it used to and also my phone has not reset by its self no more. so just remember on the pull down notification bar it will say samsung push! Dont click on it, just click clear and ignore it. I have emailed samsung my solution and they said they will look into it. So do this untill they release a new update... who uses samsung push. Samsung app and hub anyway? Not me.. good luck and let me know how you get on

Thanks pal, i will try this. It's really a big issue for all S4 ussers.
Hi all ,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S4 (i9505) last Monday (I am living in France).
Before I got a Samsung Galaxy S (i9000) and I have to say that the GS4 is very impressive
But I have encountered few problems with this one...
First of all,I didn't root m GS4 and I use a stock rom,the last via OTA : BMGA (XEF).
So in Youtube app (last update) when I look HD Video (Wi-Fi) in HD Mode, I can see some (light) slowing downs.
If I look the same video, but with 3G/ HSDPA mode, I haven't any slowing down.
If I use "Tubemate" to see the same video in HD,via Wi-Fi, the video is played by the stock Video application and I haven't any slowing down.
If I download this video and I play it with the stock Video app,I haven't any slowing down.
Anyone encounters this issue or knows what is the problem?
An other problem : the camera...
When I'am recording a movie, the camera continuously tries to focus (a lot).
Is it normal?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Very fun,really...
Try to format maybe solve the problems
If no one else has this problem, what do you want us to do?
We could spitball ideas til the cows come home and in the end you might still not get it fixed. Especially if it has something to do with either the app or your network...
We can't offer a fix if we don't have the same problem...

I haven't had an issue with this myself just to clarify and I'm not sure if you tried already or not but just thought I'd throw this out there because it's the first thing I'd try, have you tried going into Settings - Apps and clearing out the data and cache on the camera app and then rebooting first before checking to see if it fixed the problem? If you have already but it didn't fix it unfortunately I wouldn't know what else to tell ya unless you're rooted, and to be honest I can't remember if the Sprint V20 has been rooted or not. Anyway hope it helps.

Which app? What ROM?
Have you tried at least rebooting your phone? Have you gone in recovery and cleared cache(s). If none of that worked, have you tried a factory reset?
Yes tried them all.Last time I installed I flashed air command for s7 edge after that I don't know what happened ..camera is working but it isn't doing the right thing .It opens after 5-9 secs.Everything else is working flawlessly.Should I refresh the Rom to confirm the changes made by it ...Every other app like b612 is also doing the same cuz camera is controlling it.. Aod also not working...
