Call from Windows using Android phone - Galaxy Note II General

Background
Back in the day when every computer connecting to the internet was using a modem and dial-up link, you could also use the modem to dial from your computer to any phone number using dialer.exe. This was great because you didn't have to leave your keyboard and could use your pc speakers and microphone to make a call. This made me wondering if it would be possible to use my mobile phone (in my case the Samsung Galaxy Note II) to act as a modem to make phone calls. I have looked over some forums and managed to get this working. Since it took me a while, I made this thread so other people can replicate.
Before we begin
These steps were successful using:
Samsung Galaxy Note II (Android version: 4.4.2) and Windows 7 (64-bit)
Steps
Connect phone to pc as a modem
Install phone as a modem in Windows
Make a phone call
Step 1: Connect phone to pc as a modem
Enable Developer Options menu
On your phone go to "Settings", "More", "About phone".
Locate "Build number" and tab it a few times. You will get a notification that the Developer Options menu is enabled.
Enable USB debugging
On your phone go to "Settings", "More", "Developer Options"
Locate and enable "USB-debugging"
Enable USB to act as a modem
On your phone go to Phone and dial *#7284# (including the asterisk and hash). The Phone Util service mode will appear.
Under "USB" select "MODEM" and press "SAVE and RESET". Your phone will now reset.
Connect your phone to your pc using an USB cable
If your phone isn't already connected to your pc, now is the time...
Step 2: Install phone as a modem in Windows
I have used this thread to enable the modem under Windows: [REF][XMM] Infineon FlashTool & Comneon 7 CDCs Driver by E:V:A. This might also be helpful to install the drivers for other phones.
Detecting hardware
When your device has reset and is connected to your pc Windows will detect the new hardware, but will probably not find any drivers. There will be 7 CDC's listed as new hardware and one Comneon USB device.
Download drivers
The drivers for the Comneon modem can be found here: DRIVERS___WMC_comneon_3.33.0.exe - 694.68 KB
Or for the brave the direct download link: http://fs1.d-h.st/download/00111/55i/DRIVERS___WMC_comneon_3.33.0.exe
Install drivers
Install the drivers using administrative privileges. After installation the modem should be found and installed correctly. The following devices should be listed in Device Manager
{

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Step 3: Make a phone call
Phone and modem
In Windows go to Control Panel and search for "modem". Click on "Phone and Modem". If you haven't set a location before, add one now.
Go to tab "Modems", your device's modem should be located here. Select it and click "Properties". Go to the tab "Diagnostics" and click "Query Modem" if you get a response (e.g. not a blank response) your device's modem is correctly installed. Close all windows.
Phone Dialer
Press Start, Run (or Windows key + R) and start dialer.exe, located in the system32 directory: %windir%\system32\dialer.exe.
In Phone Dialer go to the "Tools" menu and select "Connect using".
Under "Line" select the modem we just installed. Click "Line Properties" and set the "Port speed" to "115200" (this step is not really required).
Now we are ready to make a call. Type in any Phone Number and the Phone Dialer will start the call. The "Call Status" will pop-up. Do not press any of the buttons unless you want to hang up.
Tips & Tricks
You still have to use the phone's speaker and mic to actually communicate. To use the computer's speakers and microphone I use a bluetooth dongle to let the computer act as a bluetooth headset for my phone. Not every bluetooth dongle is capable of this feature, you need one with a headset profile (HSP). The Konig Micro Bluetooth USB 4.0 Dongle has this profile and I use it to turn my pc into a headset.
You can also make calls from Windows using Outlook. Go to "Contacts" and right click any contact and select "Call". You can also make a phone call to any number by selecting "Call" under "More" in the ribbon of "Contacts".
Using Hyper Terminal it is also possible to receive incoming phone calls. You can connect to the COM port that is used by the modem (the used COM port is located in the properties of the modem). When connected to the COM port you can answer a call by typing the command ATA followed by Enter.
Final words
Any comments are greatly appreciated, since this is my first ever post. Also if you have similar successful implementations, feel free to comment so I can add these to the list. Thank you for reading and special thanks to E:V:A for submitting his useful post on where to find the modem drivers.

Great job... but it would have been easier to use speaker phone mode on the phone

Use MyPhoneExplorer...
You can call, sms, install apps, access data, call logs any many more...
No need to do any setting, just keep USB Debugging On....
You can even connect mobile wireless also thru wifi...

Nice work OP!
Another easy way to do this is to install MightyText. But then you're entrusting all your data to a third party.

Nice trick but a difficult one.

Did you ever ask yourself the question ... "But Why?"

Try going into Settings -> Connections, then USB to PC and uncheck 'enable advanced networking functionality' and hit ok. That may solve the RNDIS problem.
Also, to use your phone's internal data connection, use the WModem app in Program Files, make sure the APN is correct (in the WModem settings) then in Windows make a new connection using *99# as the number to dial, use the same username and password as your data connection requires normally. most of the UK network settings are on here, if you're on T Mobile UK i can give you more detailed advice but I suspect you're not
tip: kill ActiveSync before loading WModem, the connection just won't 'take' if it's still open because the phone has to be recognised as an htc modem by the PC, and if AS is still open that'll hijack the usb connection.
Do you have active sync installed? WM5 or WM6?

done, it doesnt seems to work
The error message is suggesting a problem with the inf file.. (does a standard activesync connection work when you plug the phone in normally?)
i'd try searching all the inf files in windows\inf for the RNDIS text.. (you should only need to look in the OEMxx.inf files) when you find one delete it (keep a backup)
reboot and reinstall activesync latest version.. then reconnect and see if it redetects properly

still didnt solve the problem, i couldnt find "windows\inf" folder. ny more solution
i got this error, when i use internet sharing in WM6
try an update driver on the generic RNDIS device and then choose location and pick the drivers in activesync (under Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\Drivers) presuming that you use activesync 4.5
You need to uninstall any version of active synch prior to version 4.5...reboot and install 4.5.
On the hermes, go to settings/connections/usb and uncheck advanced network connectivity.
Connect your hermes, make sure active synch finds it and synchs. Then disconnect it. Go into file/connections on the desktop active synch and disable the usb connection.
On the hermes, open active synch/options and uncheck the box where it says connect through usb.
Then plug in the hermes and start internet sharing. This will allow it to connect. Each time you want to synch you have to reverse the steps in active synch both on the pc and hermes. Once you are synched disable the connections again.
I have been using my hermes like this all summer. Works great.

[Q]Lg Factory Rom On My Quantum?

Looking for the factory rom for my lg c900, as I flashed it to mango but cant restore nodo on it can someone help me out?
Here you go!
There are instructions and download links there.
When I flashed my Quantum, it took me a while to realise that (at the very very end), you need to press 'start' in the LGDP2 utility BEFORE connecting the phone. So watch out for that.
thnx for that, i've seen the thread and downloaded everything, but this step:
"2. Install LG United Modem Driver, connect the phone to PC through USB cable and let the drivers to be installed. USB 1.1 is recommended."
I dont get what to do, after I install the united modem driver, and not sure where or how to get the firmware that it lists in step 3:
3. You'll need firmware in DZ format and the correct DLL for your model.
2: You just download it and plug in your phone. Nothing really happens, but it's necessary because later, when you want to find out which COM port it's plugged into, you'll have to go into Device Manager and, under Modems, you'll find your phone and right-clicking it and selecting proprieties.
3: The DZ Firmware is the first file you downloaded (it's under FIRMWARES on the page I linked). You have to choose the right one for your phone (by carrier) and unpack the contents. In there, you'll find a .DZ file.
A link to the DLL files is also provided (the word DLL in that step is the link). Again, download the right one (the one with the letter at the end of C900 that corresponds with the Firmware you downloaded - nothing (US), C (Canada) or K (Australia or NZ).
If you have any more problems with the instructions, just ask. We'll keep them on this thread in case anyone else needs help with this in the future.
wow I cant believe I missed those links lol thnx alot, i got the dll and am downlading the DZ now, and ill let you know if i have any problems
Okay so I dl'ed the DZ file, but when i open the lgdp32 exe and select umts division, it gives me a fail to open dll file, and then has a ports selection screen with com 7 selected. And com 7 as IDLE.

BTW this is with my phone unplugged, I noticed that nothing happened, and in device manager it just said drivers werent installed, but in emergency download mode it installs all drivers through the found new hardware wizard.
And got this during the installation:
though I'm not sure how to resolve that last issue, I do know how to fix the idle problem: ignore it. It took me forever to realize that: just press ok and then, in the main window, press start. Then connect the phone.
Also, are you sure that it's connected into port 7? Did you check in the device manager?
well the first time i plugged in the phone i was able to check and it said port 0, but I dont see that, but now that its giving me this INF message, when i click properties now the device manager just stops responding for some reason.
EDIT:when i have the phone plugged in normally, not emergency download, it says this:
Location 0 (USB Device)
for the port, but i dont see a com 0 option?
Oddly enough, my phone is now saying theres an update available, but it doesnt sync with the zune software for some reason.
EDIT:just got the installation fixed, and this is the modem page for the device manager.
I did everthing you told me, and found the com port(it was com 3), but when i hit start and plug in the phone in emergency download mode, nothing happens for some reason.
Are you sure that you're using the LGDP2_V36?
You said V32 earlier and I just noticed it. If that's the programme you've been using, try it with the V36 in its stead.
yeah I've been using the 36 one, sorry about misposting not sure what to do now though.
Could the error message "cant find monitor port" have anything to do with this?
Ok, so Today I had to flash my device anyway, so I went through the steps to get more insight into your problems.
What I learned is that you have to ignore all the problems.
So, once you've installed the LG drivers, plug the phone in in Emergency Download Mode and let the computer do whatever it needs to. If there's an error, that's fine. Next step.
Start the LGDP2_V36 UMTS and ignore any problem you're given once you've chosen the option UMTS.
In the bigger window that pops up, click ALL to select all the ports. It saves you the trouble of trying to find the port number of your Quantum.
Find the DLL and run the 'Download Configuration' and find the DZ Firmware. Press ok.
The 'Can't Find Monitor Port' doesn't mean anything. Press OK and continue.
Click Start first then plug in your phone in Emergency Download Mode.
Try this, then get back to me. I'll be checking the forum every 10-or-so minutes to help you resolve your problem as fast as possible.
okay im starting right now, ill just keep updating this post through out.
Update:installed drivers correctly with phone plugged in, unplugged it and started up LGDP2_V36 UMTS, then picked all com ports, found the dll and selected the dz file, hit ok, ignored the cant find monitor port, hit start, then plugged in the phone again in emergency download mode, but when i plug it in, all the ports still read idle, and then the found new hardware wizard still pops up even though i already installed it, then it gives me that INF error. The program is still running and the phone is still plugged in. What do i do from here?
Update:Just noticed that the LG united modem driver says Win7 in the folder name, Do I have to have windows 7? cause Im running XP SP3. and also theres two installation packages, am i supposed to install them both?
Sorry for the delay...
I'm not certain... I have Windows 7 on my PC. I'll do some searching and get back to you.
Here, try this Driver and give me news on how it worked.
Link!
I downloaded the driver detective setup thing, but its asking for a registration code, and I dont have $25 to spend
Ah. Let's try something cheaper.
Update: How about this?
the drivers installed fine, but its still doing the same thing, after i get past the port selection and hit start, when i plug in my phone, all the tiles still read idle, but now the device manager doesnt crash when i select properties for it, and it still says its in COM3. also on the ports selection, am i supposed to check off usb mode?
USB is not supposed to be checked.
okay, its still doing the same thing. I really appreciate all the help with this BTW

Pls! Qualcomm diagnostic driver for ale-l04

Hello,
Please does anybody have the correct Qualcomm Diagnostic Driver for Huawei P8Lite ALE-L04? I am trying to tweak my phone (LTE Band modify) but cant see it in diagnostic mode on my Win 10 PC's Device Manager - and so also cant see it on QPST even after installing a qualcomm driver i got from the net. If I add the COM port on QPST, it sees it as a non-diagnostic connection and so doesnt actually see the phone as connected.
Also, if there are lots of drivers that can work but I'm not setting it up properly on my PC, can someone pls send me correct procedure - and maybe one of the correct drivers? Thank you all.
Maybe you need to switch the USB mode.
Dial *#*#2846579#*#*, Background Settings -> USB Port Settings, select Manufacture Mode
Post updates! I'd like to try something similar.

I have already applied all the above settings and allowed the default modem driver to install even before my original post.
Under Device Manager -> Modems, my device appears as "Android Adapter Modem" on COM Port 9 while:
Under Device Manager -> Ports (COM & LPT), my device shows as "Android Adapter PCUI (COM6)" and "DBAdapter Reserved Interface (COM5)".
Then on QPST, even after adding the COM9 port, the phone is not seen and therefore both QPST and QXDM cannot connect to it.
If I had the correct MSM8939 Qualcomm Diagnostic driver - or I can be shown how to switch the phone to go directly into diagnostic mode, I believe it can then be seen by QPST (as MSM8939 Diagnostic port, I think) and so can connect to QXDM.
Please any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Can you set "Qualcomm background open setting" to open?
It asks for a password, I just figured out any 16-character string (e.g. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa) works (KiteKat B111 official ROM). But slill I get "Qualcom background unlock failed"...
I've used several password to try and open the Project Menu -> Background Settings -> Background Debug but none works. Even tried my bootloader unlock code. Do you have any password code I could try?
Please and pleeeaase, does anybody have the code to set Qualcomm background debug to "OPEN" in the hope that I can enter "diagnostic mode" and use QPST+QXDM on my phone?
Or is there a driver I can use on the P8-Lite ALE-L04 Qualcomm MSM3989 chipset to connect to it in diagnostic mode on QPST? Any help will really be appreciated cos i've:
1. tried a range of drivers both from xda and the internet - and non can connect my phone to my PC in diagnostic mode - probably because they are not the tailored driver for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 MSM8939 chipset
2. tried to contact Huawei severally but got no response from them.
3. even searched thru qualcomm website and contacted them but they told me they're a "technology provider" and therefore dont answer product specific questions. They advised i contact Huawei. Again.
Alternatively, is there another method for modifying the phone's LTE band without using QPST and QXDM?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I was only able to decompile the Java part of the ProjectMenuAct.apk that is responsible for the hidden menu (it's odexed, the virtual machine code is not in the .apk, but in ProjectMenuApk.odex file), and it was the 4.4 KitKat official ROM.
The Java code verifies the password is 16 characters long. If it's not, a message says the password is wrong. If the password has the correct length, it's sent to some native ARM code (maybe libprojectmenu.so), which I couldn't decompile (too advanced for me)... The native code returns an error that the 'backgroud unlock' was not successful, maybe it needs some other password.
For deactivating the 'background unlock' the Java code uses '0000000000000000' default password.
I got stuck here, I got rid of the phone (and got another one with similar problem .
Still stuck with my ALE-L04 and cant modify the LTE band to use Band 28 here. Any help?
Meanwhile, is there no available OEM or even better a Custom ROM for ALE-L04 to Android 6 so I can upgrade and see if it helps unlock Project menu/Background Debug and I can connect in Diagnostic Mode to QPST & QXDM and modify LTE band?
Merry Christmas!
Hi! I have a Y635-L01. Stuck in the same place here. Any news about this? I've tried the bootloader unlock code (which is also a 16-digit number), but without luck.
I'm trying to get the code from the seller, which happens to be a big carrier in Spain, but it's kind of difficult since I don't have a subscription (or a SIM card, for that matter) with them. I only bought the phone, unlocked.

(Don't select 'in use' COM port)
Click "OK" and see if it works.

I'm facing same issue with my YU Yureka hardbricked phone also when I unplug it doesn't go, I need to restart my Pc to make it work again really need to solve this issue please help.
Is your phone in bootloop, if yes then let it completely die first. Then charge it for 5-10 mins( don't try to turn it on) and repeat the flashing process.
Make sure that ur flasing files are selected and com port dialogue box is already opened before connecting the phone on qfil. Then connect the usb cable holding the volume up button, as phone is detected by qfil imidiately press the ok button and then click on download. Com port detects only for 5 seconds.
Sorry for my bad english.

BTW this method works by turning off device and immediately do a long press POWER + UP
(try POWER + DOWN method if UP button method fail) button together ( keep pressing both button until port appear)
Method 2.
Turn off your device, attach USB cable and suddenly press POWER button after that (One time).
You will have Qualcomm port for 5 secs.
