Having full signal drop issues - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have an ATT S4, on MDL bootloader, rooted and running Danvdh-GE-4.4.4-06272014 version ROM.
I have been sporadically experiencing full signal loss, for a long while now, and have flashed every radio I could find, so I am hesitant to believe it is just that I need to flash a new radio as others have said.
I also have recently swapped out my Sim for a new one, just to rule that out.
I also notice my "preferred network type" in mobile network setting changes from time to time, even when I set it to GSM/WCDMA auto. Not sure this has anything to do with my problem or that's normal but really want to resolve this, so whatever it takes to fix this please any advice appreciated. Thank you!
Also I am in good LTE area (used to have it all the time) would love to get this fixed BC tired of keeping to H+ signal

When you flash the radio, do you use Odin PC, remove the auto reboot and flash the file twice?

No, I hadn't been. I was flashing via TWRP. Maybe I will look into your suggestion of how to do it instead.
Thank you for the reply!

No data connection after rooting to custom rom (Darky's v5.6)

I'm new to flashing custom roms and what not. I used odin and flashed everything to the point, csc, modem, pda, pit the rom works awesome but i cannot for the life of me connect to the internet. the 3g icon or h icon wont' show up. in the status it says my network type is gprs and i'm roaming and my mobile network state is disconnected.
I'm with fido, the phone is unlocked i have never had trouble with data or anything until i flashed to a custom rom.
Anyone have the same problem or suggest how to fix?
Data Conn. Issue
Hey mate,
Have you gone into 'Settings', 'Wireless and Networks', 'Mobile Networks' and then 'APN settings' and entered your appropriate settings?
That should fix it if you define the correct access point.
Alex
hey man, yeah i did all that stuff, went in there, found my carrier, put in all the apn settings i can find and still nothing. when i put data roaming on then i get data and the edge icon comes up.
Hey dude,
That sounds strange, flashing custom (or even release) roms is never a guarantee especially with weaknesses in the way that ODIN communicates with your phone, What I would do is Re-Flash your stock rom through ODIN then use the "quick" install method from Darkyy.
I am running 5.6 like you, and I had issues doing it through odin (I kept getting random FC's), additionally, the rom; if installed from CWM will keep your apns and apps e.t.c. along with many settings and configs from the base rom you're using before the flash.
That is the best advice I can give you.
Alex
My config is a follows:
I9000 International
16gb SDHC
500HZ Hardcore Kernel
Darkyy 5.6
Whats the process for reverting back to stock 2.1 eclair rom?
Did you keep a record of your firmware version before reflashing?
If not, you may have to ask someone on here what your base firmware was.
Are you familiar with using ODIN? (The software used for reflashing)
Alex
I am having same issue to...I used 5.4 from Darky and it works well...same with DocRom 4.0 works and the next 5.1/6.0 don't work.
Both Darkys and DocRom are based some JPX....which seem to be root cause..
I've have the same problem. Tried eveything but still didn't work. So went to Samsung Service Centre to have my SGS firmware refresh. I notice after the refreshed same issue of data com missing. Told them and they when into the SGS to select the telco operator setting selection. Now data com. working well. Anyone know the SGS handset setting code? I want to reload to Darky's v5.6 again.
hi folks
i have the same problem... my provider is a virtual provider in the network of our biggest provider here in austria. i was using doc's rom based on xwjpa firmeware and everything worked fine without enabled roaming options.
since doc's rom is based on the newer releases (xxjpx, xxjpy) i' only able to use data connection if i turn on roaming. it also shows me that i'm in a roaming network. i guess the cause are the xx firmwares. xw and xx are european firmwares but i do not know the differences between them. maybe someone has more information about the differences? currently i'm using xwjpa firmware because i don't want to use my phone with enabled roaming options.
hey um i'm having the same problem and thought replying here would be better than starting a new thread.
well i installed the rom without having any idea of what i was doing *stupid idea* so i didn't take note of my original firmware.
i didn't use odin to install the rom just clockwork recovery and the rom and everything installed fine except my data network. i can get signal, call, receive the only problem is i get no data transfer. any help much appreciated. if anything can someone help me step by step to reboot my phone to original?
just for future travellers
Sadly this isn't my own gem, but yeah. hold the power button down, wait for the shutdown menu, above the airplane mode there is a data network button, and it'll most likely say "de-activated" if nothing else has worked. Its ok to feel like a chump, I did after rehashing the hell out of this phone for a few days ( the wifes phone, my phone does exactly what its told. )
Anyway, yeah, this will probably be the reason for the lack of the icon "G", "3G" or "H" where it should be.
Dave.

Mobile network not available

Hey, last night I managed to install cyanogenmod 7.1 on my GT-I9000M. The purpose of this was to root the phone, so that I could SIM unlock it. I ran the free unlocker app by helroz, and it didn't make any complaints, so assume it worked.
As you'd know, the GT-I9000M variant is from Canada, but I live in Australia (Bought it off a friend). I tried putting my SIM card into it, and it does tell me my carrier (Telstra), but the reception bars remain greyed out, with a little x up the top.
When I try make voice calls, it says "Mobile network not available".
Does this mean the phone is still SIM locked, or could I be doing something else wrong? Is there a way to check if it's still SIM locked?
I have taken a few screenshots that may help:

You need to flash KG3 modem.

Hi, thanks for the reply
I'm trying to do that now, through Odin. I put the .tar.md5 file into Phone, and went to flash it, but it failed. It seems odd that the file has 2 extensions, is there something i need to do to it first? (Most modem files I've seen have been .bin files?)
EDIT: Nevermind, managed to get it to flash. However, now the phone won't pick up my carrier at all, and baseband version is Unknown?
Regards,
Dan
Maybe try to flash it in recovery mode?
Here's one for CWM.

*ignore this post*
Bell i9000m by default is 850 or 1900mhz , try to change it to 900 or 1800.
Dial *#2263# and in GSM menu choose either of em.
Dialing *#2263# doesn't seem to do anything
I've installed the new modem you linked me, it still says "Telstra", however still no reception apparently (I know I do get reception in this room, and the baseband version seems to be the same)

Dan
Same thing happened to me I had used the wrong version of cwm to install the rom. All I did is reinstall with the cwm that the rom had installed itself and everything worked fine .
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I just tried reinstalling cyanogenmod from it's own CWM, but still have the same issue.
Just looking at the phone now, it seems the signal strength is always on -111dBm and 1asu, doesn't change.

Sorry the sane fix didnt work for you .I moved to darkysrom myself because of so many missing features in cyanogennod like the tv out feature.

Yea, I'm wondering whether the radio hardware itself might be broken. It always shows no service with this SIM, no matter which modem version I use, which firmware etc. Signal strength always shows -111dBm 1asu and that's about it.
Flash a GB firmware with pit and repartition, I think that you need to do that when flashing back from CM firmwares, then see if the device functions properly.
Check if the IMEI-number is not changed, if it's not changed and the device still can't detect the SIM-card then try executing on Terminal Manager (from Market) or using ADB (su and busybox must be installed on your device):
su
busybox chown 1001:1001 /efs/nv_data.bin
reboot

If the device detects the SIM-card but the device gets no reception then flash a modem that supports a different band, UGKG3 for I9000M supports 850MHz and the modems for I9000 supports 900MHz out of the box.
The idea is to try to narrow the problem down to 1 point, you need to know which modem you need and you also need to know that your device is not defect, doing that using CM is not the proper way, use stock firmware to avoid possible bugs in CM, and you don't need to flash to Froyo in order to flash CM, you can do it from GB by flashing a Kernel with CWM support and you are good to go.
Good luck
Hi, thanks for the detailed reply.
I've just flashed back to the stock GB 2.3.3 firmware, however I'm having trouble figuring out how to install su?
With the stock firmware, it doesn't even tell me my carrier anymore, and just says "No service".

Dan

GT-i9505 No mobile network/data after flashing custom ROM

Hi guys been searching all day when I can grab some free WiFi, basically I rooted my s4 gti9505 with auto root and then installed custom recovery, and flashed PAC rom. I'm unable to make calls or receive mobile data but can use WiFi. My settings say baseband unknown .. I'll attach a picture of my settings here in this thread. I have attempted to flash a modem/radio in Odin but this didn't seem to make any difference, the problem is I'm not sure if it was the right thing to do (didn't make a back up of my phone foolishly before flashing PAC rom)
I'd appreciate any help with this guys! My network is vodaphone UK if that makes any difference to any advice given...
Thanks in advance!

will do this too, have just finished flashing MGA modem twice using your steps, will flash rom again..i wonder if i should wipe/factory wipe as i would when installing new rom...ill try it!
no luck -still no network. im running out of ideas
network - unknown
mobile network type - unknown
imei unknown
imei sv - unknown
going out now for a while but thought id ask - do you think that installing official stock rom (perhaps from your s4 unrooting guide) would help flashed via odin? from searching i can see that some folk suggest that stock will reinstall everything i need...im hoping so, i really wouldnt mind going back to stock, anythings better than this

did you put modem in "phone" in odin?
hmmm weird! i guess your imei is not corrupted, sometimes while flashing rom in cwm, efs partition is not detected, so flashing modem twice should work
you can try with an other modem, use new one (but im sure to flash it twice)
another option is trying to flash your stock firmware

yes put it in "phone" mode, thats the second or third one i have flashed now so im not sure it wont help but for sure ill try again!
are you able to determine that its not corrupted? would it state as such if it were? im going to flash a stock firmware as a last resort. lost after that haha
edit - installed cwm using sgs4 flasher and re-installed my custom rom and gapps, booted no probs and network now working - sorted!! thanks for your help i dont think i would have reflashed the rom without your advice to do so
So I'm practically in the same boat. I'm currently on P.A.C. man nightly 09/18 (Vodafone Germany branded device). I never had similar problems, but now I can't call (or be called) and I'm not able to use mobile data.
I nearly tried everything:
1) I checked the IMEI (saved it before switching over to custom roms), but an IMEI number is still there.
2) Went back to stock to see if it's a problem of P.A.C. man ROMS or not. On stock it didn't work either.
3) Went back to P.A.C. man ROM and flashed modem XXUBMF8 via Odin 3.04 (from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025)
4) Flashed the modem again after I flashed the ROM because it didn't work either.
So I'm completely lost now, I really don't know what to do next. I had mobile data for a couple of seconds every now and then, but nothing stable. And since the problem came up (yesterday evening) I can not make any calls at all.
Can someone help me?
Edit: The very strange thing is that I have full reception balks in the notification area (only in grey). But still, I guess this means that the device is somehow able to detect a signal but can not connect to it?
Edit2: I apparently have no Device-ID. May that be a problem?
So I took some screenshots to show you guys my problem a bit better. For some reason my mobile data now works (currently HSPA, but it's extremely slow). But I still can't make any calls (or get called too). =/
Edit: So to sum this up: the strangest thing about this problem is, that even when I go back to full stock I can't make calls. =/ What could be the problem? An IMEI number is present in the settings (althouh the 'IMEI SV' under 'About phone' --> 'Status' was one digit below the current one that I can see under those stats). The whole problem makes me believe that my provider can't sort my phone number to my device (I'm on Vodafone; but if that's really the case: why the hell does mobile data works sometimes?!). The other possibility: something with the modem/radio is broken. Could this be the problem? The thing is that I also tried to flash a custom modem, but the problem is still there...
I'm really concerned that my phone just became an expensive paperweight
Slightly different than my problem in that I didn't even have any bars for reception..my problem was fixed by changing the custom recovery software (originally I used philz to flash PAC), But I flashed cwm and then used this to again flash PAC, and all was good..don't ask my why but it helped me so you might want to try this...

Thank you for your answer!
You also flashed a different modem didn't you? Did this help or was it only the custom recovery? I'm confused because I used CWM before and never had problems. But then this mess all came up...
Yes I flashed several modems, that didn't help..only using a different custom recovery to flash my custom Rom again helped..hope you get sorted!

So I tried to flash PAC with TWRP 2.6.0 (it worked before), but the problem is still there.
I'm really confused. I really don't know what I can do or try to fix this mess... Is there some USSD code or something to find out if my device is missing some ID codes or if the modem is messed up or something?
Edit:
Update: For some reason I now can receive calls/SMS but only when I'm on GPRS speed. Outgoing and ingoing calls are no problem then. When my device is on HSPA or HSPA+ speed however, the old problem of not being able to call or be called is back. On one hand it's good that I'm somehow able to make calls again on the other hand it gets stranger and stranger. I know that it's a bug on PAC man ROMs that you can't change the mobile data speed options (LTE/HSPA/GPRS etc.), but I think that this could be the problem (or at least a part of it)...

Actually I can change the data in my phone between 3G and 2G (don't have LTE support here in my country)
Have you checked your APN? Think that might be a problem.
Also please post the steps you take before flashing PAC (ROM, kernel, recovery, etc)

Within Wireless & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Network Mode? On PAC? It always crashes when I try to change something there. In the PAC bug post this seems to be a known bug, my mode is also set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE. But whenever I enter the settings to change this, only 'LTE' is chosen as option. I don't have LTE on my plan and I read somewhere else that Vodafone has major problems with it's LTE network here in Germany and that it may be better for customers without it to turn it off.
About APN: there is definitely something strange. I can enter the settings and I see three different APNs that were not created by me (they must be the standard carrier ones): they are called Vodafone DE (for Germany), 1und1 (pretty strange because the settings are the very same on this one, only the name is different) and Vodafone DE-MMS.
The strange thing now is that I can't change any value of the Vodafone DE APN... When I go into its settings, everything ia greyed out. This was the same on the stock ROM...
Now when I create a new APN with the correct provider settings (found via Google on the VF homepage), the phone still won't work. When I put the device aside for a few minutes, the Vodafone Deutschland DE APN is the selected APN again although I never went back to it...
Is there some option to take a deeper look into the modem stats to see what's the problem?

I tried that already, but it didn't help. Same problem...
I factory resetted the phone, wiped cache and dalvik cache and then flashed my Vodafone branded stock ROM via Odin that I had on my device when I got it. Didn't help for some reason... But: should I also try to go back to stock ROM via KIES? I haven't tried this method until now...
Edit: About my flashing method: I went from the stock ROM to rooted (via CF Auto root with Odin). For PAC I then flashed TWRP 2.6.0 and then in recovery factory resetted the phone, wiped cache and dalvik and then installed PAC. After that I installed GApps. I used this method before and it worked without any problems...
Edit2: I found this thread, it appears to be the same/a similar problem with the S3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805709&page=6
Now is there something similar for the S4? I think I tried calling ##72786# on stock ROM and it didn't work...

Delete the unused APNs.
Do you have mobile data?
Also I asume that you're running the latest vertigo's build, because with me GSM/WCDMA/LTE is always selected.

[Q] Mobile network disconnects when the screen is off

Hello,
I've noticed something strange this past month. I was getting data disconnections and I could'nt figure out why. Each time I look at my phone, turning the screen on, mobile network (voice + data) is missing for a few seconds, and comes back.
Now I know that if I keep the screen on for a while (I tried more thant 1 hour), I don't loose the network, but if let the screen go to sleep I immediately loose the network (I don't receive whatsapp messages in background), and when I turn the screen on, it comes back.
Weirdly, when my phone could reach 4G, I had (almost) no disconnection. It only happens in a 3G, edge, or nodata zone.
I changed my carrier (I just moved from europe to New Zealand), and it doen't change the problem.
I'm using CM11-Nightly (sept) on a I9505. I tried installing an old nightly(from july), and it was really full of error messages, so I switched back to a recent nightly, but in the meantime I had no disconnection.
Thank you for your help

I don't know exactly where this option is, but it's for battery saving. You can choose that somewhere in your settings I think
I think that's true for Wi-Fi, but I never found it for network.
And now it seems that network won't come back if I don't go to airplane mode and back to normal mode.
I'm having the same problem, seems to mostly affect lollipop installs.
Did you find a solution?

No I didn't. It seems that somewhere in july 2014, CM11 included a new version of the modem. So every CM11 build after that and every CM12 build is affected (I don't know about other roms).
I read that it was the way the modem handled finding the best network method. With the previous modem (v5 ?) it tried to get LTE, 3G, etc... but now it fails when it fails to get the prefered network.
4 solutions:
- flash the modem (didn't try it, don't know how)
- You're supposed to be able to choose you're prefered network in the options and choose 2G/edge. Didn't work for me but I'm interested in your feedback.
- get an old version of CM11
- live with it (my current option :'( )
There is maybe another solution, I'm not an expert, just a desperate user.
Hey again, I did fix it for myself.
The modem is the problem (I flashed my modem, and my bootloader just to be re-up-to-date).
If you want to get lollipop for yourself you should do it, its not too hard
Its listed as Qustion 14 on this here page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419762
I don't mind trying to give some pointers if you need help understanding how to do it, but I did this at 5am while sick so my memory of what I did is not 100%, never the less I would like to help if you need it.
Thank you for the advice (you came seeking for one, and ended up helping me ).
How did you choose which modem version to pick up ? the latest ? Do you have to do it after every CM upgrade ?
Edit:
I found the latest version from one of your links : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50965837#post50965837
Is the "Combined package - both modems in one flashable file." ok ?
And what does flashing the bootloader do ?
"What it does"... I am not 100%, I assume it initialize some part of the system, HW or kernel level, but I might be way off.
In any case I did use the dual modem pack to flash both "PHONE" and "PDA", another thread I asked in just replied to another user with the neccessity to flash the new bootloader aswell (dont know if the version numbers applies for you):
u must be using a 4.4.2 baseband and bootloader .. just a 4.4.2 baseband will not work .. once updated ur set

My question is on this page a bit down, and some replies a bit further down than that:

Tip: I had to save the PIT to a file (did it twice to be sure) with heimdall before using odin to flash (couldn't get heimdall to work for that part), all because odin would not play nice inbetween loading the PIT from device and flashing, this might not be a problem for you at all so it's just an FYI.
I managed to flash the modem & the bootloader. So far, no disconnection, so I'm quite happy.
Cheers

Data modem not functioning after clean wipe / flash

I have this strange problem where sometimes my modem does not work after a clean flash. Usually just making sure the data network preference is set to LTE solves the issue, and after 10 min or less the phone picks up the band. But I've just done a clean flash teamUB 1/11 and its been 24 hours with no data connection. This same build worked fine for this same phone a week ago, but the 1/19 broke the phone so I had to do a clean wipe and go back to 1/11.
I've played with data roaming options in CDMA roaming mode, set to domestic roaming, national roaming. Still no data
Any advice?
This is for a 900P (sprint) - Note that I am on CREDO (uses Sprint network)
EDIT - FIXED YAY!!! FULL LTE WORKING GREAT!

The issue started when I was forced to wipe my system data and do a clean install in order to get the phone functional after boot loop from 1/19 update. so yes, I would assume that the modem built into the 1/11 update I rolled back to (clean install) contained the modem. But, as stated, the 1/11 build was working fine for me before, and not now.
Is there a way to just update the modem itself on this build/phone? I've been wondering about that and wanted to try it if possible.

There is no modem included in TeamUB's roms.
First thing's first, what model are you using? Go to signature settings and write your model there, this way whoever is helping you they will know what they're dealing with.

Sorry, I wrote 900P in the first post, I thought that was enough information. I've updated my signature to contain more information.
thanks

No need to say sorry man, just mean it makes it easier. Haha you're signature says 900O lol.
1 Install Samsung USB driver for mobile phones
2 Download the NE5 modem one click flasher here
3 Put your phone into download mode (Turn off the device, press Volume Down, Home and Power Buttons simultaneously, Once you see the warning message, release all buttons, Press Volume Up to enter download mode, Now your device should be in download mode)
4 Run the file from #2 and flash modem (if NE5 doesn't help try the other ones).
I don't think it's a modem problem though. IMO it's either the rom or the operator..

The NE5 throws a <OSM> MD5 hash value is invalid error. I flashed the ND2 version and no immediate data connection, but from past experience it can take a little while for the modem to sync. No idea what causes the delay, but everytime i flash a new rom it can take sometimes up to 30min before it gets a data connection. Been 15min no connection yet.
Couldnt find a mirror anywhere of that NE5 one click flasher. Know of any other hosts? i googled to no avail.

Update:
I have restored a old backup to kitkat, modem working fine, instant connection. Then I did a system wipe, clean flash to cyanogenmod 1/20 update released yesterday.....no modem. Restored backup again to kitkat, then did a dirty flash to 1/20 cyanogenmod.....no modem.
I think the issue is 5.0 itself. The issue is so random, I do not know how to troubleshoot it. I've installed maybe a dozen CM's so far, and its been a coin toss whether the modem works after install. Sometimes it syncs up after a few min, and sometimes never. its really strange because I had the modem working fine on TeamUB from late december, through 3 or 4 updates until 1/19 boot looped it. Now after that nothing has gotten the data back on other than restoring to kitkat.
When i did the clean install to cyanogenmod, on the startup process where it says 'waiting to activate cellular service' it gets stuck there and never activates the data.
Also, when trying to flash the NE5 tar md5 you linked to, I get md5 error! Binary is invalid. Im supposed to use AP, yes?
EDIT - Changed preferred network type to 3G and after a few reboots got data! Going to change back to LTE now and give it some time to see if i can get it to sync up.

No luck leaving it on LTE. When I switch back to 3g I can get a connection, LTE set in preferences I get no connection, not even 3g. I've been testing around the city and at my home, where I can always pickup a LTE connection from past experience.
It seems that the LTE protocol within 5.0 is buggy for my situation. If it works, it seems to work fine, but when it doesnt work, it never works. So its either glass is full or empty

There are two versions of labels in Odin. The "normal" says "phone" the one I don't like says "CP". You have the Odin I don't like lol, so yours says "CP". That's where you put the modem. "AP" is for firmware/roms only.
Try these two modems, which I found on this page, NK4 for 4.4 while NKD is for 5.0.
Try Ktoosez kernel and also check your Apn settings, it's supposed to be optimised for CDMA phones and might help you.

Wahooo! Flashing NKD with odin and messing with the APN's has fixed it!!! You rock!
I took a look at ktoosez kernel, what exactly would it bring to me? Always interested in new tools......

Congrats! I'm glad it worked out Ktoonsez mentioned in the CM12 thread that his kernel was optimized for sprint/verizon phones in some way, don't remember what though :silly:
