Hey, last night I managed to install cyanogenmod 7.1 on my GT-I9000M. The purpose of this was to root the phone, so that I could SIM unlock it. I ran the free unlocker app by helroz, and it didn't make any complaints, so assume it worked.
As you'd know, the GT-I9000M variant is from Canada, but I live in Australia (Bought it off a friend). I tried putting my SIM card into it, and it does tell me my carrier (Telstra), but the reception bars remain greyed out, with a little x up the top.
When I try make voice calls, it says "Mobile network not available".
Does this mean the phone is still SIM locked, or could I be doing something else wrong? Is there a way to check if it's still SIM locked?
I have taken a few screenshots that may help:

You need to flash KG3 modem.
Here's the link to the post by [Ramad] with modem for i9000m.

Hi, thanks for the reply
I'm trying to do that now, through Odin. I put the .tar.md5 file into Phone, and went to flash it, but it failed. It seems odd that the file has 2 extensions, is there something i need to do to it first? (Most modem files I've seen have been .bin files?)
EDIT: Nevermind, managed to get it to flash. However, now the phone won't pick up my carrier at all, and baseband version is Unknown?
Regards,
Dan
Maybe try to flash it in recovery mode?
Here's one for CWM.

Bell i9000m by default is 850 or 1900mhz , try to change it to 900 or 1800.
Dial *#2263# and in GSM menu choose either of em.
Dialing *#2263# doesn't seem to do anything
I've installed the new modem you linked me, it still says "Telstra", however still no reception apparently (I know I do get reception in this room, and the baseband version seems to be the same)

Dan
Same thing happened to me I had used the wrong version of cwm to install the rom. All I did is reinstall with the cwm that the rom had installed itself and everything worked fine .

I just tried reinstalling cyanogenmod from it's own CWM, but still have the same issue.
Just looking at the phone now, it seems the signal strength is always on -111dBm and 1asu, doesn't change.

Sorry the sane fix didnt work for you .I moved to darkysrom myself because of so many missing features in cyanogennod like the tv out feature.

Yea, I'm wondering whether the radio hardware itself might be broken. It always shows no service with this SIM, no matter which modem version I use, which firmware etc. Signal strength always shows -111dBm 1asu and that's about it.
Flash a GB firmware with pit and repartition, I think that you need to do that when flashing back from CM firmwares, then see if the device functions properly.
Check if the IMEI-number is not changed, if it's not changed and the device still can't detect the SIM-card then try executing on Terminal Manager (from Market) or using ADB (su and busybox must be installed on your device):
su
busybox chown 1001:1001 /efs/nv_data.bin
reboot

If the device detects the SIM-card but the device gets no reception then flash a modem that supports a different band, UGKG3 for I9000M supports 850MHz and the modems for I9000 supports 900MHz out of the box.
The idea is to try to narrow the problem down to 1 point, you need to know which modem you need and you also need to know that your device is not defect, doing that using CM is not the proper way, use stock firmware to avoid possible bugs in CM, and you don't need to flash to Froyo in order to flash CM, you can do it from GB by flashing a Kernel with CWM support and you are good to go.
Good luck
Hi, thanks for the detailed reply.
I've just flashed back to the stock GB 2.3.3 firmware, however I'm having trouble figuring out how to install su?
With the stock firmware, it doesn't even tell me my carrier anymore, and just says "No service".

Dan

Hi there,
after updating to official Froyo JPO/JPP/JP3 my radio doesn't work no more:
It shows signal after entering the SIM code
I can't make a call as it doesn't seem to connect to the network, although it shows network coverage.
I can't receive calls as well (tested with a landline).
The IMEI is still there and correct.
Product Code is I9000HKDDBT
Restoring old backups via Nandroid doesn't help
I wonder, what could be the reason. Reflashing different ROMs doesn't help (tried with JF3, JPO official, DocRom v8, ...). Supposing it could have something to do with /efs, I already restored my /efs folder to an earlier state, but it didn't work either. Could anyone tell me the correct permissions, owners and groups of the files within /efs? Or is it something totally different?
Thanks for your help!
Noone here that knows something about that?
I have the same problem i think. I can download apps from the market but can't recieve or make texts or calls.
can anyone help?
Same issue here.
Phone shows signal but if you show the status screen it only shows emergency call only.
Signal showing, according to the Debug it is showing 7 antenas nearby, also the network lock code is off for every lock, so i dont know...
is a Tmobile originally branded but flashed with darkys rom. PReviously was unlocked using the one click method,
does you phone display a baseband?
I had a jp3 in today that had no baseband
just flashed it using odin with jpy and it worked fine.
is a Tmobile originally branded but flashed with darkys rom. PReviously was unlocked using the one click method,
If it worked before that install then go back to the original works then you know where the problem is .
jje
Me too, Flash the JPY or other firmware from uk orange firmware, has band and signal covered, but only emergency calls only at some places, specially at home.
hope someone can solve this problem
I've got an unlocked Australian (Telstra) Samsung Galaxy S i9000T that I've been using on the Optus network (with Amaysim).
I've run numerous stock and custom ROMs and recently backed up the /efs folder (using: "tar -czf /sdcard/Download/blah.tar.gz efs") after some scares with boot loops while trying to load a new Devil kernel with my TeamNYX RC5 Android 4.0.4 ICS ROM.
With these custom ROMs the phone identifies itself as an i9000 (instead of i9000T that it showed with the Telstra FROYO.JP8 ROM).
The other day the airplane mode became unavailable and I lost the mobile network.
I've tried going back to the original ROM (got it with Check Fus) and done factory resets etc but I still get emergency calls only.
I've tried swapping sims and my sim works in the other phone but no sim will work in my phone.
I've also reloaded my efs folder but nothing has helped.
I've check the "Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association" web site to see if my IMEI is barred/blocked and it's not.
Does anyone have an idea on how to work out whats going on and what can be done to investigate/fix the problem ?
This forum always had a search function. Web, tapalk or xda app has it.

problem would be due to branded phone, meaning you need a telstra ROM, for it to connect to telstra network.. try this https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=da77fff5eaaed269&id=DA77FFF5EAAED269!296 and its not easy to get one
xsenman,
I'm currently back on the stock Telstra branded ROM (obtained with CheckFus) but with the same problem.
Also, I'm not trying to connect to the Telstra network. I just trying to use Amaysim (via Optus) that has always worked before.
I'm guessing it's one of three problems:
- Corrupted EFS (but my IMEI is correct)
- A block that the Australian data base doesn't know about
- An actual hardware problem
I've tried a lot of things including have the phone re-create /efs and then I put the imei folder back.
I'm wondering how to track down the cause. I.e. is there a way to examine logs of why not able to get on the network?

O-T,
I've read that thread. That was how I backed up my /efs before this problem.
I was never able to get the /dev/block/st13 though and just have the efs folder.

If your IMEI, is correct, it is not an EFS problem, but has to do with network settings, try menu> settings> wireless & Networks>mobile settings,
If your SIM is from telstra, than don't use optus or other networks
you can try the ROM and CSC file form link i posted earlier

xsenman,
My sim is from Amaysim and worked before with the stock Telstra ROM that I've gone back to now. I've not tried your ROM as it looks like to be the stock one I'm using.
I can't access the "mobile networks" settings as the phone doesn't think I've got a sim installed at all.
It looks like a hardware problem.
Could this be a boot loader / radio mismatch ?
Also, is there any reason to not always use the latest version of Odin I have ?

Also could happen, IF SIM card is inserted the wrong way, cleaning the SIM contacts , using any Odin will do or try using another SIM card

Hi guys been searching all day when I can grab some free WiFi, basically I rooted my s4 gti9505 with auto root and then installed custom recovery, and flashed PAC rom. I'm unable to make calls or receive mobile data but can use WiFi. My settings say baseband unknown .. I'll attach a picture of my settings here in this thread. I have attempted to flash a modem/radio in Odin but this didn't seem to make any difference, the problem is I'm not sure if it was the right thing to do (didn't make a back up of my phone foolishly before flashing PAC rom)
I'd appreciate any help with this guys! My network is vodaphone UK if that makes any difference to any advice given...
Thanks in advance!

will do this too, have just finished flashing MGA modem twice using your steps, will flash rom again..i wonder if i should wipe/factory wipe as i would when installing new rom...ill try it!
no luck -still no network. im running out of ideas
network - unknown
mobile network type - unknown
imei unknown
imei sv - unknown
going out now for a while but thought id ask - do you think that installing official stock rom (perhaps from your s4 unrooting guide) would help flashed via odin? from searching i can see that some folk suggest that stock will reinstall everything i need...im hoping so, i really wouldnt mind going back to stock, anythings better than this

did you put modem in "phone" in odin?
hmmm weird! i guess your imei is not corrupted, sometimes while flashing rom in cwm, efs partition is not detected, so flashing modem twice should work
you can try with an other modem, use new one (but im sure to flash it twice)
another option is trying to flash your stock firmware

yes put it in "phone" mode, thats the second or third one i have flashed now so im not sure it wont help but for sure ill try again!
are you able to determine that its not corrupted? would it state as such if it were? im going to flash a stock firmware as a last resort. lost after that haha
edit - installed cwm using sgs4 flasher and re-installed my custom rom and gapps, booted no probs and network now working - sorted!! thanks for your help i dont think i would have reflashed the rom without your advice to do so
So I'm practically in the same boat. I'm currently on P.A.C. man nightly 09/18 (Vodafone Germany branded device). I never had similar problems, but now I can't call (or be called) and I'm not able to use mobile data.
I nearly tried everything:
1) I checked the IMEI (saved it before switching over to custom roms), but an IMEI number is still there.
2) Went back to stock to see if it's a problem of P.A.C. man ROMS or not. On stock it didn't work either.
3) Went back to P.A.C. man ROM and flashed modem XXUBMF8 via Odin 3.04 (from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025)
4) Flashed the modem again after I flashed the ROM because it didn't work either.
So I'm completely lost now, I really don't know what to do next. I had mobile data for a couple of seconds every now and then, but nothing stable. And since the problem came up (yesterday evening) I can not make any calls at all.
Can someone help me?
Edit: The very strange thing is that I have full reception balks in the notification area (only in grey). But still, I guess this means that the device is somehow able to detect a signal but can not connect to it?
Edit2: I apparently have no Device-ID. May that be a problem?
So I took some screenshots to show you guys my problem a bit better. For some reason my mobile data now works (currently HSPA, but it's extremely slow). But I still can't make any calls (or get called too). =/
Edit: So to sum this up: the strangest thing about this problem is, that even when I go back to full stock I can't make calls. =/ What could be the problem? An IMEI number is present in the settings (althouh the 'IMEI SV' under 'About phone' --> 'Status' was one digit below the current one that I can see under those stats). The whole problem makes me believe that my provider can't sort my phone number to my device (I'm on Vodafone; but if that's really the case: why the hell does mobile data works sometimes?!). The other possibility: something with the modem/radio is broken. Could this be the problem? The thing is that I also tried to flash a custom modem, but the problem is still there...
I'm really concerned that my phone just became an expensive paperweight
Slightly different than my problem in that I didn't even have any bars for reception..my problem was fixed by changing the custom recovery software (originally I used philz to flash PAC), But I flashed cwm and then used this to again flash PAC, and all was good..don't ask my why but it helped me so you might want to try this...

Thank you for your answer!
You also flashed a different modem didn't you? Did this help or was it only the custom recovery? I'm confused because I used CWM before and never had problems. But then this mess all came up...
Yes I flashed several modems, that didn't help..only using a different custom recovery to flash my custom Rom again helped..hope you get sorted!

So I tried to flash PAC with TWRP 2.6.0 (it worked before), but the problem is still there.
I'm really confused. I really don't know what I can do or try to fix this mess... Is there some USSD code or something to find out if my device is missing some ID codes or if the modem is messed up or something?
Edit:
Update: For some reason I now can receive calls/SMS but only when I'm on GPRS speed. Outgoing and ingoing calls are no problem then. When my device is on HSPA or HSPA+ speed however, the old problem of not being able to call or be called is back. On one hand it's good that I'm somehow able to make calls again on the other hand it gets stranger and stranger. I know that it's a bug on PAC man ROMs that you can't change the mobile data speed options (LTE/HSPA/GPRS etc.), but I think that this could be the problem (or at least a part of it)...

Within Wireless & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Network Mode? On PAC? It always crashes when I try to change something there. In the PAC bug post this seems to be a known bug, my mode is also set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE. But whenever I enter the settings to change this, only 'LTE' is chosen as option. I don't have LTE on my plan and I read somewhere else that Vodafone has major problems with it's LTE network here in Germany and that it may be better for customers without it to turn it off.
About APN: there is definitely something strange. I can enter the settings and I see three different APNs that were not created by me (they must be the standard carrier ones): they are called Vodafone DE (for Germany), 1und1 (pretty strange because the settings are the very same on this one, only the name is different) and Vodafone DE-MMS.
The strange thing now is that I can't change any value of the Vodafone DE APN... When I go into its settings, everything ia greyed out. This was the same on the stock ROM...
Now when I create a new APN with the correct provider settings (found via Google on the VF homepage), the phone still won't work. When I put the device aside for a few minutes, the Vodafone Deutschland DE APN is the selected APN again although I never went back to it...
Is there some option to take a deeper look into the modem stats to see what's the problem?

I tried that already, but it didn't help. Same problem...
I factory resetted the phone, wiped cache and dalvik cache and then flashed my Vodafone branded stock ROM via Odin that I had on my device when I got it. Didn't help for some reason... But: should I also try to go back to stock ROM via KIES? I haven't tried this method until now...
Edit: About my flashing method: I went from the stock ROM to rooted (via CF Auto root with Odin). For PAC I then flashed TWRP 2.6.0 and then in recovery factory resetted the phone, wiped cache and dalvik and then installed PAC. After that I installed GApps. I used this method before and it worked without any problems...
Edit2: I found this thread, it appears to be the same/a similar problem with the S3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805709&page=6
Now is there something similar for the S4? I think I tried calling ##72786# on stock ROM and it didn't work...

Do you have mobile data?
Also I asume that you're running the latest vertigo's build, because with me GSM/WCDMA/LTE is always selected.

Best solution is try some another "micro sim".
DONT cut it but bring it from your service provider.

already tried with no luck
From what I know I believe the sim cards can have hardware within 1/16th of an inch from the side, or it might have been 1/8th but yes dont cut the card, um I know it sucks but back up what you can with something like titanium backup, then try undoing what could be the cause, so flash stock rom. With titanium backup you just hit backup/restore then the checkmark in the top right then scroll way down and hit restore apps/missing apps+sys data... if it fixes the problem then great but put a copy of the backup on your computer in case the extsdcard gets wiped too for some reason or in case you have to send it in

i use following method to downgrade
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
Ill ponder for a while and see if I can brainstorm a solution, ill ask around a bit and see what I come up with,
If your worried about your warranty and your carrier won't help you, I suggest going to best buy and letting the Samsung guys take a crack at it, they have the proper software to find the problem.
OK when you first got the phone was the sim working?
Is it a carrier specific device?
If yes are you using a sim card from that carrier?
Is the phone unlocked or factory unlocked or is it locked?
Was there any thing you did such as flashing custom roms?
I think it may have a bad Imei but I'm still trying to figure that out

dont know if you ever got your issue fixed or not, i had a similar problem the other day on my galaxy s4 i337
i was able to make phone calls and recieve text messages but i could not access the internet through the network, my carrier actually did something that helped but didnt fix it... the technical support team had me turn off the phone and then they erased me from the network, so when i turned the phone back on the phone rebuilt the network through the sim card and for some reason i have better reception now...
i still could not connect to the internet via wifi or mobile network so i factory wiped and installed the stock firmware.
do you have somewhere to go where they can "officially" flash the stock firmware? here in the usa i can take my phone to BestBuy, a large electronics dealer, and they have a samsung area that the people have the tools to do so.
maybe your network carrier can help you, maybe its not a phone issue but rather a network provider issue.

Mkay I'm not real sure about that so I would check the forums for your phone and see what you can find since you narrowed down the problem

It's a little bit strange but you can try to use an adhesive tape on the side of sim card to prevent a short circuit between contacts and the sim card's metalic tray.
It worked for me.
Somehow or another I have managed to screw up my modem on my SPerry XT1766 (Boost Mobile).
I only get Emergency Calls Only radio signal, Settings app and bootloader info shows Baseband Not Found or Unknown.
I tried using RSDLite to flash
XT1766_SPERRY_SPRINT_7.1.1_NCQS26.69-64-10_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC
which contains the fsg.mbn and NON-HLOS.bin files, but this doesn't seem to help. I've tried multiple firmwares with multiple different modems and nothing seems to be getting my modem up and going. Back when I originally updated I flashed the partition updater also. I have no idea what to do now. I'm downloading the 69-56 version to try that, but I doubt it'll be any different. If anyone has any idea on what to do that would be great. Thanks

Try my baseband updater from this thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo.../rom-stock-android-7-1-1-rom-moto-e4-t3885821
It will attempt to update your baseband to the latest version (M8920_15000.280.06.58.06R) from firmware build NCQS26.68-64-11. If this doesn't work for you let me know, I may have a solution.
@Knuxyl
Are you on Boost network? I've seen the radio off problem with ppl using a different sim.

Yeah I already tried that but it jept giving me an error saying unknown command [ ]] or somrthing along those lines. i looked through the script and didnt see any typis. i think your NON-HLOS.img is different format than the NON-HLOS.bin files found in the stock firmwares, plus it's much larger. Anyways, tried a fastboot flash the modem with it and that didnt work either.

No I am not on a boost network but this problem goes more into firmware than network compatibility because the bootloadet itself isnt even recognizing the baseband. For the record I am still using a CDMA network like boost (Verizon)
Also as an update, the 56 version didn't fix it either

The latest update did that too many people. It won't work with a different sim. The radio will be off.
I bet if you put in a boost SIM, it would pop right on.
They changed something in the -8 firmware.
One guy building ROMs (not here anymore) made some changes to his build that got certain networks to work on his ROM.
He never got the chance to share exactly what he was changing.
It seems that if you booted the phone ever with the original sim inserted, it tripped a qfuse (of sorts) and it seems they have added a way for that particular reading to turn off the radio completely if you're not using one of their SIMs.

You are 100% on point. Sprint (and its subsidiaries) had Motorola Mobility to include code in an OTA update which would disable functionality of any network other than the original UICC (SIM). In other words, when you got a new Sprint compatible xt1766 (Sprint, Boost or Virgin Mobile), opened the box and booted the device with the preinstalled SIM in it, the xt1766 became forever locked to that network -- the OTA update carved that in stone. The update made it impossible to downgrade the baseband radio, killed all GSM functionality, and broke the radio on custom ROMs (the latter being unintended most likely). The only people I have heard of getting around this are the ones that didn't take the -8 OTA update. Like you were saying, I'd like to know what Jason M. done in his custom ROM to fix radio function, whereas at least the radio would work with the original SIM on a custom ROM. He said something about "adding missing symlinks" to the build.
I did this too somehow. I think this might bring your baseband back (it did for me), but... well, I'll get to the "but..." Anyway, Boot to TWRP, mount the Persist partition, then go to terminal or pull up an ADB shell and do:
chmod 0700 /persist/rfs/msm/mpss/datablock/id_00

Reboot with a SIM card inserted and voila, you maybe might have a baseband again. Hooray! Except in my particular case, I regained a baseband and then somehow lost an IMEI. Well, not really "lost," it's still there when I pull up the barcodes page... but on bootup it thinks it's 000000000000001. I still haven't ever fixed it, though I did manage to turn it to a single 0 somewhere along the line. Fkit.
But I don't know of anyone else who's lost their IMEI this way, and it's been too long ago and I've tried way too many failed fixes to remember what else could have triggered the problem to start with, so who knows. If you decide to try it, definitely make a backup of the Persist partition before you do anything...and make sure your backup turns out to be good first, not corrupt like mine turned out to be....sigh.
