[Q] original cable not charging fast enough - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I just realized my original cable doesn't charge my phone fast enough and I drain battery while using it. I swapped for a Motorola micro usb, and it works.
I downloaded an app to show mA rate, and with original cable it goes at about 360 or 450 mA. When I use Motorola cable it goes to 1900mA and proceeds to raise battery %.
What can cause this? The plug looked little dusty, I stuck a twist tie in and out (like on bread bad) and tried to clean it, but there's no difference.
Also there's no pin 4 on my cable, the ID pin I think. That seemed to be common for Samsung, so guys, what do you think caused cable to go bad, or am I missing something?
Also I use BlackBerry charger it says 800mA, this will charge it.
Thank you.

Could have just gone bad. Batteries go and all the time. I just had o swap out my sisters amdnmine for new ones because they wouldn't hold a charge for more than 6-7 hours. So its possible you just had a faulty one. Btw the phone is meantnto charge slowly. The faster your battery charges usually means the battery is giving out. But in your case you found out it was the data cable.

Could u tell me which app you used to show mA charge rate.

Its your wall mount. Try plugging the original USB into the moto box. It should charge fine. If not try the obvious (original box to moto USB)
Happened to me on my s3 and my s4. Sucks.. i know..

No pretty sure it's the cable. Used cable on 2A nexus charger, and it only did 300 mA.. I wonder where I can buy a good 4 or 5 foot usb cable for not too much money? The default usb cable length (3ft) is usually too short to reach the outlet for me. =(

I just googled this.. cheap 6ft samsung micro usb.. great prices from local places like walmart and amazon.
Although you might wanna add 2000mah. Lol

300Ma means your USB cable has no Power wire and you are just getting power from Data wires
460Ma is what you would get from a Data USB port
1A is what you get with a good USB cable and Charging Data port
1.2-1.9A is what you get with a good USB cable and Wall/car charger that can provide 2.1A.
good USB cable= 2core for power with 24AWG wire size and 2 Data wires at 28AWG.
Not longer than 6feet

Great USB cable for full charge from PC

I picked up this cable at bestbuy last weekend before a camping trip to use in with my usb charger in the car. I got outside and noticed that while using it it showed up as an ac charger. So far, every PC ive used it on recognizes it as an AC adapter and therefor charges at full power. I had seen an earlier thread about a way to accomplish this, and i know it isnt done via a hack, but if you have 20 bucks, you have a solution to the problem.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...p=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960
Just noticed this should prob be put under accessories, but it didn't feel like the right spot for it. Mods, if it belongs there, please move it.
Thanks,
replaced link as links with prices from bestbuy do not seem to work. The item is the usb cable./
Added pics of a standard usb plug charge and the one i mentioned. You can see the grey rocketfish cord shows up as AC

well please disregaurd my post, i was under the impression a standard usb cable plugged into the pc pulled 500mw and while in the ac charger, 1000mw or 1W.
i thought there was a difference in time, because it seems to take all day to charge from pc. charges alot faster from the ac adapter.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but you're incorrect. First, a computer's USB port only has to put out 500 mA (that is the spec) - the HTC wall charger puts out 1 A (that's 1000 mA) (EDIT Thought I would add that these are both @ 5 V, so you have 2.5W or 5W of power...Power, current, and voltage are not interchangeable /BSEE lol). Second, the phone can tell when it is charging from the stock charger and when it is charging from a non-OEM 1000 mA charger or a 500 mA charger / USB port (it will say charging via AC or USB on the battery status page in the About Phone page of Settings).
So to the OP what you're saying is, this cable makes the phone think it's charging via it's AC charger? Have a picture? (not a screenshot, a picture of the phone screen showing AC while plugged into this charger).

It does, i was just being sarcastic. The above mentioned cable will allow you to pull full draw from your usb port on your pc.

Thanks for that, i try hard not to be a **** to people, but you handled it quite well. I will add a screenie to the front page shortly. I had made a custom cable myself and removed the two inner pins (data+ and -) to achieve this purpose. But keep in mind, when using this usb cable i posted, you can not sync to your pc-it will only charge-hence the fact my battery profile shows ac charger when using it. Give me a little to get to a camera to take a pic of the cable and a pic of the battery profile.

Computer USB can only output a certain amount of power, it isn't going to increase power with a cable.
I use Juice Plotter to see exactly what my battery life is, and how long it will take to charge. There is no difference in the charging time between USB and Plugged in.
Now on USB it will take longer because the screen is off and I am normally fustsing with it a lot, where when it is plugged in, I am not touching it at all and normally shut the screen off.
So even if a USB puts out 500mah and a wall charger puts 1000mah, I don't believe the phone has any type of switch to its micro USB to allow it to sense the mAh and adjust the charge. Else I would think your screen shots would show different numbers.

Every windows mobile phone ive ever used could be manipulated to allow the usb port to pull 1000mw. It is a hack and there is work on finding it in the android system. I am hoping this cable bypasses that and if i can find any program that shows charge current, i can know for sure. Android os uses parameters to decide how much current to pull as does windows mobile.

Bricked Desire HD - power issues!

My battery discharged while I was travelling - it went to <10% and shut off by itself. I left the original HTC microusb over seas and so I used my old Motorola microusb to try to charge the phone. After leaving it overnight a number of times I thought the battery was dead. I ordered a new battery (from Mugen) and tried to charge that.
All I get is a flashing orange/red light. The phone does not turn on.
I have tried charging on both the AC charger and via PC usb port.
Are all MicroUSB cables universal? I can't get a straight answer about this from HTC's customer support. Every time I call someone gives me a different answer which leads me to believe that they have no clue what they are talking about.
Is there anything I can do to remedy this?
The HTC AC charger is rated at 5V 1A, while my old Moto charger is rated at 5.1V 850mA. Could I get a charge by using slightly higher voltage with lower amperes?
I really would like to avoid sending it back to manufacturer warranty so if there is any other alternate route I can take please let me know.
I have some cheap MicroUSB cables and they seem to charge very slowly compared to the HTC one. There may be a difference, but I suspect the cheap cables are just plain cheap.
No the Motorola charger wont have done it any harm, 0.1volt wont make a difference, and charging at a lower current is less likely to cause damage.
Could I have damaged the phone by using a different companies' cable?
Is there a chance that the phone is FUBAR? Should I be able to turn it on if its plugged into a power source even if the battery is dead?
please excuse the bump
need to know
*bump*
I've actually tried all the different combinations of charging and they all seem to work fine
I've tried a cheap microUSB cable with the official charger, official microUSB cable with iPhone charger, cheap microUSB cable with PC, another cheap microUSB cable in my friend's car, and even a Nokia microUSB cable in all the mentioned combinations
They all just gave different current readings (from CurrentWidget) but in the end they all worked well. I'm not sure if a Motorola microUSB would have modifications that cause incompatibilities though
I also tried different Micro-USB Cables and my DHD still works normally.
me too have the same problem. I got a total of 3 diff USB cable. One give me 330mA, one give me 120mA and one gave me only 50mA. i do not mind spending the money if i know how to choose a USB cable which can give me 330mA everytime i charge. Anyone knows how to spot the correct ones?

Any Blackberry USB cable should work..
used Motorola cable many times. No issues.
Might be a fluke that u busted ur phones charging system.
The USB cables are all the same and have no effect on charging current. The charging current is determined by how the two data lines within the cable are terminated in the charging device. If the data lines are left open ciruit, the phone interprets this as being a USB charger and will therefore only draw a maximum of 500mA to prevent damage to a PC's USB port. Chargers that are capable of delivering more current (such as a wall charger) connect the two data lines together. The phone then interprets this as being a charging device which is capable of delivering a higher current and will draw greater than 500mA. If you look at "Menu - Settings - About phone - Battery" it will state either "Charging (USB)" or "Charging (AC)" depending on what you are charging from.

Charging without Samsung AC Adapter?

I went out of town this week and made sure to grab my USB cable, but left the AC adapter at home figuring I'd just charge off my laptop via usb. Apparently not... I also tried plugging the USB cord into my iPhone AC/usb adapter with no luck. The only thing I've found is that when you turn off the Tab and connect to one of these devices, a green battery indicator will pop up showing that it is charging. Well, after about 16 hours, it made it from 15% all the way up to 48%. Does anyone know any way around turning it off to charge or why it is barely charging when it is off?

Well seeing as it has a 7000mAh battery, just about any run-of-the-mill USB charger isn't going to cut it. The amperage would have higher as well. Now i would hazard that an iPad charger (10 watts) would probably work just fine vs an iPod charger.
Your laptop's USB port isn't providing enough juice to charge fully. With the screen off it will only trickle charge and very slowly at that.
You'll need at least 5 Volt 2 Amp chargers.
You can also try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14890063&postcount=16
Or this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/190522553195?ru...ee-All-Categories&_fvi=1&_rdc=1#ht_3085wt_905
I've ordered both last week but neither have arrived yet. I'll report back.
You need a 5vdc supply that will provide 2A. 10W, not 5w as the previous post said. That adapter on ebay won't help the charge, it just disconnects the data line so it does not change its mode when connected to a computer. There are a lot of power supplies that will work and even more that won't, just made sure it supplies 2a. If you want to charge off your laptop then you will want a Y adapter similar to what is on usb powered hard drives but even then you will need to use 2 usb 2.0 or 3.0 ports and will provably only get 1a out.

Impossible to charge sg2 in car

Hi all, just came 3 days ago from an htc hd2, and so far I am more than happy with it.
I have only one complaint and maybe you guys will help me sharing your experience : I can't charge this phone in my car while using gps.
It seems that the power adapter is not powerful enough to charge the phone screen on.
The car charger has a 5v 1000ma output, more than the regular wall charger provided by Samsung and it was working well before with my HD2 so I have no clue about this problem.
Did you experience that issue too, else can you share what car charger do you use?
try to buy new standard car charger with micro plug.. 13 eur and you will be saved..

Charger doesn't matter unless the phone is dropping into USB charging mode - phone limits to around 600-650 mA by default.
Custom kernels can bump this limit up for I9100 users. I777 users are screwed - we've got a crippled charger chip.
I had the same problem, I used the samsung one, useless, so I used my iPad charger, which is 2A, and charges the iPad quick, still useless. We drove from Bathurst NSW, down to Melbourne, about 10 hour drive, plugged in all the way using GPS, and about an hour from home, the connect to charger warning came on!! So once I stopped GPS, it started taking charge. Looks like when the phone is in use, it draws more then it takes charge, plus I read somewhere on here the phone is limited on the charge it takes, so using the 2A does nothing different then the stock 500mA charger.
I always had this problem with my Nexus One, although they are different phones, the problem is the same, uses more power then it can recharge in USB mode.
After trying 3 or 4 different charges I remember that I found one ultra-cheap 'made in taiwan' from a street seller that worked very well.... so it's kind of a lucky shot!
good luck!
Im using a genuine Samsung SGS2 charger and I can charge and run Sygic just fine. I started my journey with 80% and 40mins later I was up to 91% when I stopped and got out. (not in aeroplane mode..)
Very interesting feedbacks... So that confirm that is clearly not a matter of output amperage power.
It is now the same problem on the galaxy tab 10.1, for quickly charge this tab you need the Samsung compatible usb adapter.
It can be likely with a tab bringing a proprietary plug, but I didn't thought it will be the same with a Samsung phone bringing a regular micro usb plug. Quite frustrating and disappointing!
I will search around a micro plug car charger as suggested by redzion, but actually I don't clearly see the difference with my usb charger + a micro usb cable.
Double post, sorry.
If I use the usb cable from my cd player I have the same problem but if I use the official Samsung car charger Ithe only problem I have is the phone getting stupid hot

Oh Samsung, when you will understand?!
Samsung DOES follow the USB charging standard - it goes to its highest current setting when a charger that follows the standard is connected.
Note that iPad/iPhone chargers do NOT follow the standard - Samsungs will treat these as USB hosts and limit to 450 mA instead of 600-650.
Modified kernels can increase both of these values on I9100s.
The only thing Samsung really did **** up is counting screen/CPU current usage against the charge current limits - that's just stupid.
So the charger has smarts. On the i9000 factory chargers, the data pins were bridged. Bridging these pins manually on a USB cable when connecting to a USB source (such as a PC) enabled full current charging. You can see this in Settings -> About; it will say either USB or AC charging.
Do you think this is the case with the i9100?
I don't condone testing this theory on your i9100. Increasing the max current via custom ROM may be a safer solution.
I had the same problem. Two things fixed it for me:
1) I bought this charger: Sony Ericsson AN300 Micro USB 10€
2) I am using a custom kernel now
Any charger that is rated at 1000mA or more (per port) will do just fine. The problem is the cable - you need a quality microUSB cable, or it won't provide all the juice you need. I had the same issue, and I swapped three chargers until I found the real culprit.
Try with the charger you have now and the mUSB cable that was in the phone box - it should work well with that one.
I just press the power button to turn the screen off. when i need the sat nav i press the power and it still tracks you so there is no delay. With the screen off it does charge.
same problem

You are right, but even if it is better than nothing the charging time is still a big problem.
Yesterday I drove for at least 40mn phone off. Arrived to destination, I turn the device on: it charged only from 0 to 5%
I would like to test the mariusi theory concerning the Samsung micro usb cable, unfortunately on my SgsII box I just have a wall charger, no a microusb-usb cable.

Maybe for safety purpose? Gps phones can become very hot behind the car glass.
Samsung are trying to "encourage" you to buy only their official accessories. To do this they've wired something differently in their chargers and cables. This "problem" exists on the Galaxy Tab too and can be solved with this adapter...

It's cheap and turns a trickle charge into a full charge. I don't know the specifics of what they've done, but their USB charging just isn't the same as most others manufacturers.

[Q] Charging problem

I used ordinary low charge cable to charge my Note 4. Then when I tried to charge it with the original Fast charge cable it wont work any more.
Does this mean that the fast charge cable is not working any more?
Or I need to do something with the setup?
Please advise

Erm... Not 100 % correct.
Cables DO make a difference. We're trying to transfer at least 2 A of current via thin wires. That needs a specific cross section of the wire; many USB cables use internal wires thin like a human hair, which could cause problems like overheating or simply reducing the charging current, resulting in longer charging durations.
Samsung doen't provide that thick, stiff cable with their high-amperage power supplies without a reason.
So please stick with the cable provided with your power supply; it really is the best choice, keeping you and your Note safe.
And: Nothing wrong with fast charging !
Zyad: Try charging your Note with the original power supply using the original cable, but charge the phone switched off for the first time.
After charging, switch on, use your phone till the battery is down again. Then switch back to fast charging.
Could not have said that better myself.
