I am total newbie to android. I was an apple user for many years.
I bought a demo edition of galaxy note 3. A friend of mine who is an expert app developer replaced the demo firmware to a working firmware.
This phone will boot loop if a normal firmware is installed because of missing modem.
Now I want to do three things.
1) Backup my whole current firmware and all the drivers without rooting. This is very important to me. ( I do NOT need to back up apps, photos, etc etc)
2) Root the phone (for using adhoc wifi and few other stuffs). I cannot find any files and instructions for rooting this partcular model ( sm-n900x).
3) Install a custom firmware
I want to backup the firmware before rooting in case anything goes wrong.
Please tell me if it will be possible to do these three things and how.
Another question..... does rooting replace the full firmware/ part of the firmware/or any drivers??

Hi All,
I have read all the relevant threads in this forum regarding this, and I can't find an answer so here goes:
I got a brand new Galaxy S4 i9000 gifted to me.
This was from China I believe (the phone was bought in singapore but it has Baidu Input on it so I assume it was sourced in China - i may be wrong)
I can not for the life of me get Odin to recognize my phone;
I have tried everything recommended; (including installing drivers, USB debugging etc. yes I have also tried opening Odin first vice-versa)
Additionally, I can not get the phone into recovery mode (no combination of buttons seems to work - tried everything).
I came to the conclusion that this must be a region thing?
Anyone have any ideas about how I can:
1) get odin to recognize my phone
2) proceed to root (i suspect solving no. 1 will give this solution).
Many thanks.

You probably have a Chinese fake Galaxy S4, clone based on the S4. What cpu do you have installed and what is the software buildnumber.
BTW I9000 was the modelnumber of the first Galaxy S launched. You cannot root or flash stock or custom roms designed for the S4 as you will most likely brick the phone.

Upload a mobile pictures
Does air view , smart scroll etc wrkng ?
.
Was it recovery or download mode that showed a clone?
If it is a real S4 then you are probably having trouble flashing the modem. That was where it kept screwing up on the S3... Unfortunately the answer for that was to flash using Mobile ODIN but that doesn't support the S4 I9500 as of yet....

If you can't get it to go to Download/Odin Mode then it is a clone
can you check if it has the LCD TEST by typing *#0*# on the Phone Dialer, if you also don't have this then it is a clone
lastly download CPU-Z from the PlayStore and check if the processor is Snapdragon 600
Hi everyone,
I got a live demo unit Galaxy S5 (g900x) from work, and I've never used a Samsung for rooting / flashing purpose before. I was wondering if I could in fact flash a stock rom, and root the device, in order to use it as a full multimedia device ?
Thanks
If Samsung continued the demo unit path as per the Galaxy S4 then the S5 demo units will be missing important hardware components, a physical connection between the Sim port and the system board being one of them. It was impossible to use an S4 demo unit as a phone for example. It was also impossible to flash a standard stock rom without the device refusing to boot, the partition table was also different.
Of course, this all might not be the case with the S5 demo units and they might simply be stock units with a modified firmware. But, if not, you have little more than a small tablet on your hands.
Thank you for your answer, I knew I couldn't use as a phone, but at least I wanted it as, like you said, a small tablet. The problem is the retail mode app that keeps launching itself and wiping the device, even if I disabled it. That's why I was hoping to flash a stock rom or at least root the device.

Definitely sounds like a similar situation to the S4 demo units, I remember they would wipe anything on the data partition on every boot. I'm not sure if the issue was ever overcome.
Check out the following post, not sure if it could be applied to the S5 model.

Do not flash a stock rom on it because most probabably you will end up in bootlooping
Try this (PLEASE BACKUP EVERYTHING BEFORE FLASHING)
-root it with CF auto root
-make a nandroid backup (THIS IS ESSENTIAL) of everything
-maintain pit, modem and bootloader files from the demo rom (from your backup) and pick other parts from a stock rom (european open rom will do)
-flash all parts with odin
-now you should have a full working mini tablet without gsm and gps signal
This method is similar to the one used on Galaxy Note 3 and i think it will work, just do the backup before for safety and i'm nor responsible from any damaged caused
Let me know
Are you sure I can root it ? It is SM-G900X, which is not on the list on chainfire's website.
Hi,
I had a few questions about flashing my phone and potentially updating to kitkat.
I would appreciate having my answers in same form as questions thanks!! (sorry for being so picky)
1. I heard Kitkat does not allow you to backup apps or modify folders in the sdcard is there a work around to this? (the reason is because I use a program called Es Explorer to move files from folder to folder.)
2. I have a Canadian note 3 (SM-N900W8) I want to get the S5 layout and features such as Ultra Saving Mode onto the Note 3 without losing any of the key features from Note 3 like s pen functionality. Is this possible if so please leave a guide to performing this
3. To get the S5 features onto my Note 3 will I have to first update to Kitkat or can I stay at 4.3,?
4. Will I be able to get OTA software updates on my Note 3 even after I port the S5 features?
5. Before I do any flashing or modifying How can I BACK EVERYTHING ON MY PHONE to ensure NOTHING IS LOST.
6. Finally, will I have to first unlock my phone to flash or mod it?
THANK You!
I appreciate your time.
You can get all of that by flashing ported s5 rom like the RC elite rom , and no your device will be modified so no OTA but you don't need it anyway
Before flashing backup your stock rom in the custom recovery so nothing get lost
Make sure to backup your IMEI before flashing anything.
Go to Play Store and enter 'IMEI Backup' to search for IMEI backup app.
1. It works perfectly fine for me on KitKat
2. Yep the rom link and guides is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/rom-canadian-v17-rcelite-t2840523 (imo the rom is very snappy and good! All the full S5 features and look without compromising on SPen functionality )
3. You have to flash kitkat first
4. Well you can't get OTA updates for the Note 3 firmware, but you will get OTA updates for the rom!
5. You can do a nandroid backup, copy all files to computer or backup with KIES 3
6. Nope

2 years ago I buy my galaxy s4 unlocked version from amazon.com. When I came back to Turkey I registered the Cellphones imei. After that I rooted my galaxy s4. I watch lots of tutorials and most of it did not work out. At the last try I was able to root my device. After a year my uncle bought me a gear 2 neo which needed a higher version of android. So i plug my galaxy s4 and updated trough kiosk. The result was my galaxy s4 was mys galaxy s4 lost its root acsess was gone and system was updated. Also most of the apps first run and then give a error. For example i downloaded can knockdown 3. First it worked fine then it stopped working. One of my friend suggested I need to downlad a rom and suggested cyanogenmod. I tried one button installer but it said the device is not supperted for this installer. But my phone is listed in the supported devices(GTI9500). Please help me. My cellphone is slowly dying. Also last thing. They say making a change on the phone sometimes deletes the imei registiration.
Just perform a factory reset and your issues will probably be resolved. If you want root again just flash cf auto-root.
I have done it and it hasn't changed. Still the same issues.

Sounds like your phone may have been corrupted when installing official firmware on top of the root. I would recommend re-flashing your phone with official stock firmware. You can use this website to obtain a stock firmware for your device model
http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-stock-firmware/
Your imei should not be affected if you re-flash your phone, however just to be on the safe side you can flash a recovery mod such as TWRP Recovery and back up everything such as your efs which contains your imei baseband in case a re-flash causes your phone to not work on cell networks in Turkey (which I'm guessing is not the country your phone was purchased in.) After you have backed up everything in TWRP to your sdcard you can safely reflash stock firmware.
I just swapped from my Amaze 4g, to a used Note 3, and I'm a little lost as far as where I should start.
It says that it's on 4.4.2, and that I cannot update due to a modified system.
Basically, I would like to get updated to 5.1.1 (or as close as is official for the Note 3), and root it.
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Samsung devices, and because I purchased this from ebay, I don't know how to tell the exact state that the former user put it in (I expected they would return it to stock prior to selling).
It's currently a T-Mobile branded, SM-N900T, on 4.4.2, build is KOT49H, security software MDF v1.0 release 2. Kernel is 3.4.0-660648.
It is supposedly unlocked for carriers, though I have not attempted a SIM card use yet, until I can tell that what I have is a valid device and the IMEI is checked out.
Any thoughts on how to validate the IMEI, and sort out how to get my new phone up to date would be appreciated. As I stated, I expected the vendor would have returned it to stock, but that is clearly not the case, so I don't want to accidentally boot loop it by doing something I shouldn't. I have not owned a Samsung before, so I want to be careful on how it differs from my Nexus 7, Amaze 4g, and Droid X, as they're all obviously very different in the OS area.
Thank you for the help1
Download tbe stock 4.4.2 rom and use odin to install. Then you will get the OTA updates.
Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk
There is no stock 5.1.1 for note 3, only cm12.1/ aosp. Latest is 5.0 and you can use odin to flash. Maybe it's rooted that's why you can't update.

Some apps to install from Play Store...
Phone INFO Samsung - this will tell you all about your phone and the firmware etc.
Root Checker Basic - tells you if you are rooted or not.
SuperSU - this is so valuable you should buy the Pro licence. Chainfire does some great work for our phones.
TWRP - I have the zip version on my extSDCard and an Odin version on PC in case I have to rebuild from a Stock firmware. CWN works OK but most ROM builds seem to be for TWRP I think and a backup from one will not work on the other.
I don't know your previous phone so you probably need Odin v3.09 - this sits on PC and lets you flash firmware to the phone. (connected by USB)
For which you need Samsung USB drivers so the PC will recognise the phone. Install on PC before connecting phone.
Then do some browsing and find the processes to root your phone and install the ROM you want. If you just want Stock and access to all your phone, you can root it after flashing the original v5.0 download (from Sammobile or similar site - note on Sammobile you need a free account to DL) and then install Custom recovery (if wanted - it WILL trip the Knox flag but that may not matter given it's 2nd hand and might already be tripped anyway)
Read, make SURE you understand what is being said BEFORE you do anything - ask if you don't.
Good luck...
N9005 Lollipop brick
Hi All, just need a huge help here, a friend of mine has been using a N9005 which was auto restarting, she went online and downloaded this firmware...N900AUCUEOC1_N900AATTEOC1_N900AUCUEOC1_HOME.tar.md5....2.5GB in size...and flashed it, but the phone is stuck in boot loop even after recovery wiping data and cache, the phone can boot into download mode but re flashing the firmware always fails.....is there a solution for this.....please help
Thank you all for the info, especially the detailed info from Journyman16. I checked, and it is flagged as custom, which is fine, so I'm going to go ahead and try to return to mostly stock, update it, and root it.
Ok, everything went well. I had to do two attempts at rooting, but I think it's just one of those things where sometimes it doesn't restart into the process every time.
All seems good. I'm on 5.0, rooted, busyboxed, and smooth sailing.
Thank you all, again, for the tips. The Note 3 is running very well. Thank you to all of the devs that have made this process so refined. I've donated to you before, and did so again today. It's outstanding to have such well versed coders, on XDA, helping out the community.
