I've been using this phone for around 14 months now. I've always thought about how LG managed to build a phone like this and sell it for 300 bucks. Well two days ago I got the answer. The lower part of my screen just stopped functioning, thus disabling my buttons. I searched for this problem and found a MASSIVE thread on google support forums about this. Basically the lower part of the digitizer just goes full retard. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And when it doesn't work it makes the entire phone lag (on a custom rom)(it doesn't work 95% of the time).
To fix this i tried to make the navbar slightly bigger, but that resulted in a growth of the defected part. And using PIE or button saviour is just a pain for me.
I made this thread to let people know that this problem exists. If the next Nexus phone is made by LG, I'm buying something else.
This is an open discussion, so anyone with a similar problem/fix can post.
I really dont know, what you guys actually do with your phones. I am using my nexus 4 for about 1 and a half year now, has been dropped twice with two scratches on the edges - no screen broken, no bootloop ever, no nothing. I can say of myself that I am not the friend of bumpers or screen protectors or any of those ugly things. I also flash a lot, try out a lot of apps - my nexus 4 has seen it all.
But not only the nexus 4, also my previous phones are fine and they still work (a nokia 5130 xpress music and a sony ericsson u10i). Thats why I thing a phone is just as good/stable/great as the user do. Of course there are a lot of issues out there but I think they dont appear from nowhere.
4 nexus 4's in the family most almost 2 years old......never a problem. This kind of crap reminds me of the " my back glass just exploded on its own" thread. Let's not make blanket statements.....digitizers on phones malfunction all the time....on all brands, probably due to your mistreatment.
I do not understand the point of blaming it on the user though. Yeah, many phones from different brand have digitizer issues. Yeah, digitizers fail. But if a lot (and I mean a lot) of users are complaining on the same exact issue there is a manufacturing problem for sure. And it's pretty clear that you did not bother checking the related thread at google's support forum, otherwise you would notice how many "mistreating", as you say, users are all having the same digitizer issues in exactly the same part of the screen. Now, does that mean that every nexus 4 sold will have the digitizer fail at some point or another? absolutely not. Maybe its' only one every 100, or even 1.000 or 10.000. Maybe it was a defect of a relatively small batch of screens (seems legit since the issue always occurs after a certain amount of months), that were sold in a period where you didn't buy the your four statistically (ir)relevant devices.
when will you guys understand that just because your phone does not have the issue, doesn't mean that NO phone has that issue??
(and even if it's not one but 5, 10 phones, how much relevance do you think it has compared to the hundreds of thousands of shipped devices?)
for what matters to the actual thread, anyway, I read LG replaces the defective devices under warranty without fuss. If the device is out of warranty, a diy repair is pretty easy to people savvy with tools.
Anyway, there is a couple threads here that talk about the issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/q-t2810588
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/screen-touch-test-results-t2822075
This isn't the users' fault. Take a look at this: https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/nexus/7SNIT8xPYzc
The repair costs in Sweden are so high, I might aswell get a new phone. I didn't even get this phone for 350$, LG sells it for 500$ in non-google play countries. And btw, half of my screen is not working now.
Or maybe you spent the last year keeping your phone in your pocket instead of a belt case and damaged it, or dropped it, or got water on it, or any of the other 10 million things that could damage an LCD/ digi. While I understand you have a problem and are looking for someone to blame....99% of these issues are due to physically caused damage and not defects. I have 2 teenagers.....I know how they treat their phones and I spend a lot of time repairing them after " I didn't do anything"
Same here
I'm having the exact same digitizer problem with my Nexus 4. First, a band of 8mm at the bottom of my screen became unresponsive, then a week later, the band grew to about 14mm.
I've had my N4 for 15 months. Bar two hairline cracks on the back panel (around the rear camera and speaker) my phone is mint. Barely a scratch on the digitizer front panel, and yet, it's failing. The weirdest part is, the otherwise lifeless zone at bottom of my screen occasionally springs into action with erratic ghost touches on my nav bar. I'm working around the problem at the moment, however, if the dead zone gets any higher, my phone will become unusable.
Reddit, YouTube and Google support are full of similar occurrences, and still not a peep from Google or LG.
My wife and I both have been using nexus 4 phones since it launched nearly two years ago. Hers started doing this 3 months ago and is practically unusable now. Mine started doing it last month and is getting worse too. I always thought of it as a great device and thought highly of LG's build quality but its hard to have those feelings now. Seems related to age + heat. Will be trying a different manufacturer next time since her phone has always been in a case and is flawless. Mine is banged up bad without a case but lasted longer.
Also my 16 monts old N4 two weeks ago after a run in hot humid weater followed by a very long phone call started to show problems at the bottom of the screen (no swipe up to activate Google Now) and in a couple of days all the lower portion of the touch became unresposive as clearly showed activating the pointer position under the developer options menu. Does anybody know exactly where is the problem? Digitizer connector, synaptics chip, cable? At present I'm trying to convince Google UK to issue an RMA in Italy where I'm now and would appreciate hints how to achieve that as it seems they offer RMA only to a country where the Nexus 4 was originally available on the local Play Store.

back glass does crack on some phones when there is sudden change in temperature ,it happened on xperia z as well dont be so naive , the probability of mistreatment has nothing to do with factory defects
My digitizer works fine until the batter gets to about 80% .... then the screen freaks out and the phone turns off.... fun stuff!

Ya right....ignorance......
This is actual real problem. My Nexus 4 works fine. But replaced the digitizer on my brother's after the bottom half died. Just go on eBay and buy the panel for around 50 bucks. About an hour of work

repaired my screen
i replaced the screen after just 1yr 7 days. I live in India so phones available are quite cheap and the screen replacement cost was cost of an average smartphone but still i replaced it . I just want to know whether the replacement screen will have a digitizer problem after 1yr. I also had to replace the battery.
4 Screens replaced, the last 2 had bad digitizers?
I've replaced cracked screens 4 times now... the 3rd developed issues with the touchscreen going unresponsive every once in a while (I would tear down the phone again and again and finally the touchscreen would inexplicably begin working again.) I Finally cracked that one and now the new one has the same issue. I installed the new screen/digitizer, again with some difficulty , After a few reboots for whatever reason, suddenly unresponsive. Reboot 4 more times and it's back. Initially I'd thought I just bought a bad replacement screen but two in a row is pointing me towards .. well, something else...
Looking closely at the new component I'm a bit concerned as the text on the ribbon cable from the digitizer is labeled "Snaptics" rather than "Synaptics" though the chip itself is labeled correctly...
Sigh...
In any event, I was hoping someone could possibly shed some light onto this. 4 screens later I'm a bit sentimental and would hate to have to retire my N4.
I almost replaced my screen assembly because I had the dreaded dead band in the middle of my screen. It was present in TWRP so I figured the digitizer was bad. Then I started to get screen jitters and ghost touches. I tried wiping everything, new ROM's, etc. I final flashed the last PA KitKat beta and the 4.4 Gapps. Problem solved. I re-flashed the PA 5.0.2 Alpha 2 and there are no problems anymore. I was convinced it was a hardware problem because the problem mirrored every N4 digitizer problem thread that I saw.

To start, yes, I have searched about the touchscreen issues but do not want to revive a dead thread. So, how long does it take for the HD2 touchscreen issues to arise from power button usage? 2 months, 6 months?
Not really possible to say........ Ive had mine for near enough 18 months, used the hell out of the thing. Never had a single issue.
Then again you'll get people coming on here calling HTC all the names under the sun because their "pos" phone broke after a month.
Its like anything, look after it well and it will last. Im sure some of these people who suffer things like touchscreen failure after a short amount of time just do not take precautions to protect their device from damage.
I have had my HD2 for over a year now without issues.
So at least a year.
I bought my HD2 on launch day and I have taken exceptionally good care of my phone and here it is almost exactly 16 months later I'm having the touchscreen problems. I knew nothing of this issue until now, sucks, can't upgrade for another 4 months.
US version on US launch date
I've got my precious form march 2010, and for a few days I got some troubles with the physical buttons/touchscreen.
If I touch the arrow button, the touchscreen doesn't work anymore. I have to touche very slowly the buttons in many directions until it works again, for a few hours...
I send it yesterday to repair.
I'm waiting for the quote........
thats an odd question...sort of like asking the doctor the rough date of your death. without examining you, the doctor probably won't answer because he knows:
1. each individual has a life "expectancy" of about 70 years but each individual is different
2. most people are average with little or no predisposition to health issues
3. some people are average but might have a genetic history that could cause a health issue in the future
4. some people would belong to categories 2 and 3, but they are in a category of their own because of their lifestyle, which causes stress on their otherwise healthy bodies (smokers, eating fatty stuff, etc)
5. and very few are "defective at birth"
all i am saying is that these devices are comprised of many different and complex components. each component is manufactured in batches within certain degrees of tolerances. put together, the system's longevity becomes only as long as the longevity of the weakest link. also, your style of use of the device could stress a bunch of otherwise "good" components, causing them to fail earlier.
all in all, i've used my device carefully since may 2010. so far, i had to open it up once because the led flash cover had depressed into the body causing the vibrator to jam. for me, i haven't faced touch screen problems but i did face THAT particular hardware issue with the led flash cover.
i stopped using the screen protector a few months ago (only one faintly visible scratch so far). i also stopped using a silicone body case, so now the body has a few minor scratches as well. i treat the screen with a light touch and buttons with gentle presses.
all is well. but the question demands some sort of a "crystal ball". generally, electronics are built to last several YEARS...and so i will generally say that the HD2's screen will fail in 3-4 years, but don't hold me to it and i'm only saying it because the question asks for a time frame...so there you go!
Sorry, I just had to thank you for that post, it made me chuckle
I've not had any problems with mine, and mine is secondhand. These touch screens are markedly better than the likes of the Touch Pro 2 and the Tytn 2 (only other 2 touch screens I've owned) My TP2 screen died a death but the Tytn got bricked in an update. Oh well HD2 for the win
If you have a warranty on your phone use it. If you don't you can call T-Mobile and ask to do what's called an out of warranty exchange. Worked for me so maybe worth asking about.

I recently got a refurbished Nexus 4 from Google beginning of April. I been having minor issues ever since getting it but i never bother to call them or get them to send me a new one since my warranty was expiring around end of April. So since last week, my phone started having these crazy erratic ghost touches lasting either a few seconds where i'd turn off my screen and it goes back to normal or it would last a good 10-15 minute non stop. I rooted it recently and i tried to do a google support. They suggested factory reset, did that. Re-image the device to original state, also did that. The problem continues and its getting a bit annoying. I noticed the problem starts a lot more frequently when the phone is hot or when the battery is below 50%. Is there anything i can do to make this go away or less frequent? Thanks
Also google suggest i call LG to get them to repair it and have my wallet raided. I prefer not to. Since i feel like they cheated me by giving me a crappy refurbished phone that has hardware issue just like the one i bought from them.
ghost touches unfortunately are not uncommon. I experienced them as well, then the lower bottom margin of the touch screen went completely dead. If you take a look at this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/q-t2810588 you'll notice there's more people on the same boat. There's not much that can be done, it's a hardware fault and probably the screen will need to be replaced.

I did some search on google forum and there was a huge thread on it as well. This problem started to happen more frequently started the 4.4 update for a lot of users. Freaking google offers no help at all :/
The phone has been out for most of us just little over a month and there have been many reports about front/rear glass cracking, so now I made this poll to see how many people actually have/had problems with their device.
Please note that this poll is only about hardware problems, so don't vote yes if you only had software related problems, thank you.
To be clear:
Vote yes: If you had glass cracking (with/without) a reason, flaps not closing properly, phone not being waterproof, etc
Vote no: If you had no problems, software related problems
Bump!
Don't forget to vote!
I voted yes due to a way too sensitive touchscreen - putting a screenprotector on however solves the problem, but I take it that it is the out of the box product we have to vote about...
(To the - right now 13 persons - who have voted no - does this also mean that you don't have the popping issue when pressing the screen? Or is this looked at as a feature...? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JrfMjiNB9E)
Nope. I've had nothing wrong with the phone, no "popping", no "glass breaking" even though I accidentally did drop it today.
Nothing. I'm convinced most of you are playing baseball with your phones, or just being extremely picky.
Not any problem at all. This phone lives up to its expectations but i also keep it protected with case though.
i had the phone for 3 weeks. i bought a magnetic charger and was using that. last week i went to take the charger off the phone and the whole magnetic charging "module" came out of the phone with the charger. it's currently back at sony for repair - i'm really hoping they just send me a new one though. that was a fun discovery. anyway, no problems with glass or anything like that in the time i had it, though.
Not a single problem so far.
Btw, good initiative!
However, I think that since only people with glass issues post that on the forum, it's not surprising that it looks as if it's a major problem.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I made this poll, due to so 'many' people reporting issues with their phones it might scare people off that intend to buy the phone.

Hmmm could there be a connection between the popping screens and the very sensitive screens? Mine has the popping and also a screen that sometimes during internet scrolling has a life of its own speedscrolling up to the top of homepages when lifting the finger from the screen - an issue I have never ever had before on any of my many previus phones...???

The plastic frame is so weak, i drop once and inside the frame its cracked . After that i use a case then dropped again this time between part of the plastic frame n front glass a piece of part came out. Rest is very good. No prob at all.

hello,
"Z3 Compact" bought the 28.09.2014. The phone is turned off itself in the middle of the day in my pocket. The battery level was approx. 75% => Black screen, not even light on the charger...:S
The Sony support told me to send them with charger and usb cable.
I am waiting for news... approx. 10 days...
NO issues so far... put a tempered glass screen protector on the phone pretty soon after buying it, but I never saw any screen popping or "life of its own" syndrom while I had the screen unprotected.
no issues so far , i had some bad experience with singapore firmware , but its all good now (using latest brazil firmware).
i did drop it a week ago , tempered glass cracked abit , phone also got abit of a spank on the top right corner, still water proof.
all good just no ****ing root
Sudden Death after two weeks.
Had this awesome phone since October 3rd. All fine and dandy till now, the vibration would work sometimes. It comes and goes but it's no biggie, I can live with it!
Gyroscope defect
Yes.
I had the phone for only 3 days and the phone suddenly stop rotating. I did a factory restore and even trying running the system test. Compass test tells me function is not available. Sony says it might be a hardware issue so I had to send it to Sony to get it fixed.
My mic has become strange. People say that I sound like I'm a mila away from it.
Hey guys,
it seems that every smartphone i own breaks after ~18 months... Now my Z3 is finally gone, i guess.
Problems:
Blurry Pictures, i guess a coating of the lens went off?
One "system UIDs inconsistent" error, since then, whatsapp had "damaged databases" for at least 20 times - factory resettet twice, no difference
REAL bad touchscreen response from time to time. It either doesn't detect inputs at all or thinks you already lifted your finger. Super annoying, especially when typing.
Glas on front AND back is getting loose. The adhesive doesn't hold the phone together anymore
I can shrug off the first two problems (that's something i could have lived with), but not with the bad adhesive tape (??) that doesn't hold the phone together properly. You can look under the screen, it's not that far out (yet!) on the backside of the phone. Has anyone had that problem before? The phone was looked after well, i haven't dropped it, it was ALWAYS in a case. It had a glass screen protector until the touchscreen response got too bad (it didn't get any better after i removed it though).
As for my bad luck, i dropped the phone for the first time ever about an hour ago, since then the power button can't be pushed in properly anymore. The screen survived it miraculously, even though it sticks out quite a bit. I wanted to send it in for repairs next week.
I have the back sticking out problem . I'm using a case now because the service centre says they need 15 days to repair it

I had the same issue with the glass not glued to the chasis anymore. It wasn't sticking out so badly as urs but I took it to repair centre and they repaired it for me. I had also USB charger burn marks on my LCD, so they changed my screen to a new one. I'd recommend you to take it to repair centre. I tried to heat up the adhessive but it didn't work out quite as planed. After the repair it was ok. But then another story happened. WHich isn't connected to this one.
When the glass is lose, you lose the waterproof ability too. The phone can easily take damage from any kind of moisture.
Waterproof ability? Nah, USB seal is gone anyway. It went about a year ago, so i get why there are so many damaged Sony smartphones... They should include a magnetic charging cable in the box. Thanks for reminding me with the screen, the display also has irregular lighting with a corona just above the on screen buttons. Battery runtime also reduced by 50% (9hrs SOT when new; 4.75hrs now after factory reset, i guess they decreased their battery-saving modes with every new android version).
I still have my old red HTC One M7, so repair time won't be an issue. I guess i won't change back to the Z3 but sell it when it's repaired, because it feels too big in my hands and i never liked it quite as much. Funny; I bought the Z3 when i send in my One M7 for repairs (bad camera lens [purple tint], lens cover broke by itself (was not repaired), buttons far to wide inside housing (not repaired) and some other stuff). Every of my 4 smartphones broke after max. 18 months.

Yeah, there are quite a lot broken Sony phones, especially in this area(Screen). I completely agree with you about the magnetic charging cable. I had an issue with that also. I've never reached 9hrs of SOT, I've got this phone for like 6 months or so. Never had it more than 6 hours.
About the updates- yeah. As i've heard, it has decreased by every update. The best battery was with KK, but when I bought it, I already had 5.1.1 preinstalled. It is a good phone, serves all my needs for sure. Doesn't lagg and so on. THere are few things I dislike about it, the camera is underperforming for such a lense and specs. But not terribly underperforming. Think my recent phone (LG G3 ) was taking better shots. It eventually breaks. I had my phone taken to warranty repair twice. Once for screen getting lose, and the LCD burn marks. And then I took it to warranty repair because my camera became blurry and the focus didn't work at all. I tought it was just a piece of dirt behind the lens. but as it turned out, they repaired the LCD again, the upper firing speaker, the camera module, the magnetic charging module and so on. I may have got a bad unit, but the problems are surreal. I paid so much for this phone, but I have never had so much problems with any phone than with this one... Quite dissapointing to be honest. And I'm thinking about the same as you are... Switching away from Sony. This experience is quite terrifying... :crying:

They should cover anything which isn't damage by your behavior. Like dropping the phone on the ground and so on

Yeah, As I've heard, they don't act the same in any place. They mostly are very mean. And don't want to help at all. Either they say that you will have to pay for it or just live with the problem. I guess not everyone has like 200$ for a new LCD swap and so on.
Just to be fair, i'd only want to switch back to my One M7 because i loved that phone so much. Also because it still feels too big. The One M7 was even worse, quality-wise.
The Moto RAZR i i had before the HTC worked for a year, only the AUX port was broken and after sending it in, it was ruined (scratched, logo damaged) and i got my money back. Before the Moto, i had an Desire HD that held together pretty well, until the radio went bad. SIM wasn't recognized very often, battery was absolutely DEAD (jumped from 60% to 0% more than once).
What i think is so sad about it, is that you pay ~500€ for a piece of .... that doesn't even hold together for two years. I knew why i didn't sell the "repaired" One M7, you NEED a backup phone these days. Now it's in use for the second time after the Moto G of my girlfriend broke. Probably if they would spend just a LITTLE more on quality than on new features for the next high-end smartphone that has to be released after 6 months i'd be more exited to get a new phone.
I only bought the Z3 because of the battery life (gone with updates) and because i had several friends with Xperias of which none had a problem.

My backcover became slightly undone (adhesive failing). I also had 2 bright spots (0,5cm diameter) on the left and right bottom part of the LED.
Everything was fixed free of charge, they also gave me a new battery (I asked for a replacement although the old battery was still going strong, but I plan on using this phone for quite a while and the old battery probably had way over 300 cycles)

Damn you are lucky. No repair for me here as garanty period is over, but I have the exact same issues, forward facing glass is getting undone and I have at least 5-6 bright spots on my screen. Really, really annoying when reading. Any idea if I could get it fixed in some no-name shop?
Surprise... After sending in my Z3 on 18.08., i just got it back and i'm in a moral conflict. They sent me a new unit plus new screen protectors. Service-wise, i'm really stunned. It makes me consider buying a Sony again, just for the service... Unfortunately they don't sell a phone i'd want to have right now.
However, my mobile phone contract runs out in 2 months and i got used to my old HTC One m7 again... So i don't know whether i should (and also want to) use the Z3 again for a longer period of time or sell it in it's new condition and get a new phone in 1.5 months. I'd want to have an S7 or Note 7 - especially the S7 would be plain cheap if i'd get it with a contract. If i sold the Z3, the additional costs of getting the S7 would be covered for 18 months of a 24 months contract period. Hypothetical: If I'd use the Z3 for another two years (won't happen) i'd only save 60€ compared to getting an S7...
Well, i guess those are first world problems. Anyway, i'm really stunned by the service - worst experience yet was motorola when i got back a damaged phone, closely followed by HTC, they repaired half of what was broken on the phone...
Sell the Z3, especially if it's brand new, you could get a good price for it. Then invest that money into something new.
I had this problem too, service replaced my phone's screen and metal case for free because this is Sony's fault.
How are any of you guys out of warranty? Mine came with a 2 year warranty in the UK, and it hasn't even been out 2 years yet.
I had to send it to service centre twice. First time digitizer broke, second time replacement screen was peeling away and screen was getting discoloured. Both times also got the magnetic dock port fixed, but I think that was damaged because I was using the wrong insert in the magnetic dock (you need to use the tightest one). I'm a bit disappointed that such an expensive phone breaks this easily, but the service has been excellent.
Hello,
Last month, I've noticed a small dark spot on the right edge of the screen (no outside marks). Next, the dark spot grew and grew, and now I have to use it in negative color mode to be able to read the screen, otherwise it's useless. This might have been caused either by drops, or water (got caught by rain a couple of times), or both.
Question is- are the Chinese displays from ebay and aliexpress any good? They seem to go for 35-55USD, while an OEM display costs 100-120USD, however this is by no means a state of the art display, so I'm hoping that the generic one might work just fine.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Recently I bought two displays with frame for a Redmi Note 4 from two different stores on aliexpress. Both the cheapest Ich could find.
I tested both and replaced one without any issues. And I doubt these are genuine parts
So... I've finally changed the display.
Removed the old one, installed the new ebay one and... nothing. No display, no touch. The phone otherwise seems functional and it's seen by the PC.
So it's either a DOA display, or something on the motherboard got fried (I hate this non removable battery phones...)
UPDATE:
good news: I managed to make it work- turns out it needed a restart (hold power button + volume down for a while)
bad news: it is poor quality- bright colors, and especially white are cloudy, the touch screen is randomly laggy and unresponsive, and touching the screen also randomly and temporarily makes strange artefacts (as if you pressed on a none-touchscreen laptop display) . Also the glue that was on it's backside was crap, it started peeling the next day (though I cleaned the motherboard side with IP alcohol beforehand). Now I got some B-7000 glue in delivery, hopefully I'll manage to remove and reglue without breaking...
good news: got a partial refund
another update:
Did the "samsung experience 9.5" update and lost the touch function. Good thing a USB mouse still works with this. Some posts on the internet say they made the update reject the Chinese displays, other say that it's a bug that randomly appeared in some countries. I know it could be rooted and reflashed and while I've done this procedure before, right now I'm not willing to risk installing some trojan with the reflash.
So I bought a Chinese Android One phone. To hell with these money hungry bastards- I'm not buying another big brand phone anytime soon. Perhaps the moment people stop buying their crap, they stop doing the planned obsolescence tricks.

I'm in a similar situation and really understand and feel about buying these branded phones.
Total waste
