Hi All,
I've spent all day trying to figure this out. I'm a pretty tech-saavy dude too, so I've finally decided to join this forum to post for help.

I've followed numerous guides and even 'successfully' rooted my phone using Odin, however when I launch applications like 'RootCheck' and 'Titanium' they both tell me it's not rooted, even though everything went as planned.
My gut feeling, based on some research, is that the stock firmware is overwriting my rooting stuff (I don't know the terminology yet!) when it boots up.
Anyway, I really want to root this bad boy! I just switched to the S4 after 6 long years of iPhones so I'm real stoked to get it feeling the way I want.
Could someone provide me a link to some proper files? I think that's where I get lost.
I currently already have downloaded and attempted to root using this:
- Samsung USB Driver (just verifying I do have this)
- Odin v3.07
- CF-Auto-Root-jfltecan-jfltevl-sghi337m.tar
Thanks in advance!

Thanks again everyone, now to find out what it all means. ha!
Hello everyone. I just got a Samsung Galaxy S4 on the AT&T network. I want to root it to open up the capabilities and such. I have tried rooting this phone via the motochopper method and the "format micro sd card exFAT/unzip/run command cd /mnt/extSdCard..etc) when i get to the ./pwn I get permission denied. I have tried searching and come up with nothing. I am running Android 4.3 build. SGH-I1337 MK2 platform. I am ready to pull my hair out. I spent all day yesterday trying to resolve this. Please help.
PS: If I missed something I apologize I did try to search.
Thanks,

the only root method is vroot and that is suppose to be pretty questionable as far as security goes.
And if you are okay with that there is still no custom recovery for mk2 so you will not be able to flash custom rome onto it yet

I was able to root my AT&T S4 running MK2 with KingoRoot 1.1.5. It's a very simple 1-click root tool.

Use kingo, it uses vroot method without the virus/trojan and ripping off your emei
I should add i confirmed with them that vroots malicious code was removed from kingo root latest release. Google it for download. I used it, knox safe root even for my i377m

Again thanks for the information.
After I do this can I do the custom roms like everyone else? Are there any limitations or is it the same as everyone elses root access?
Thanks

I dont believe you can run custom recovery, might soft brick. Mk2 is locked i believe, maybe safestrap. Again tho double check. If cant run custom, install xposed framework, can do all rom customization on stock, only does it in memory, without changing apks or system and what not, cool stuff. Anyway install busybox installer from play store. Then xposed is apk you can find with Google, once xposed running, download the modules u want from within xposed and play around. All mods can be turned off in xposed if it causes problems.

I think on 4.3 all you can do is root, its possible there's a recovery script or something. It should be in the general of att s4 forums
mf3 rooted SHOstock
There is no recovery and no custom ROMs that can be installed.
Looks like the lot of you have no idea what is going on. With this device, a maybe can end up with a $600 paperweight.
Please be 100% sure of your info before posting.

Thanks alot for the info, I am kind of kicking myself because I had a phone before this one that I rooted no problem but then the phone started dropping calls and such so I returned it and now apparently I got one that is not rootable as of now. I am sure the developers are working on it and a workaround will be out soon.
Again thanks,
It is rootable. Just no recovery or ROMs

I have tried Vroot 1.1.5 about a dozen times and always fails. I have debugging checked and drivers are OK. I can connect adb with no problem. At times adb and root will say device offline. I also got the connect message on my sgh-I337 Att Mk2 and checked always, then OK. Any info or suggestions.

First I made a mistake as it was Kingo root ver 1.1.5. I never got any superuser or supersu message on my i337, I did see the notice on Kingo to allow supersu when it came up. Kingo goes thru connecting, downloading, sending script to device, waiting on device and sometimes I see device offline, then Kingo will connect and do it's thing. At the end alli get is root failed. I will do it again in a couple hours and try to get better information. One question I do have is what state is the I337 to be in booted up and lock screen unlocked, recovery or fast boot? I have only tried in booted up and lock screen unlocked. Oh I have tried root also but it failed also. On Knox, some thread it was mentioned to have Knox disabled to run Kingo. I ask there but was reminded that I wasn't on a Kingo thread... even tho some 8 others had ask questions or input on Kingo. So found this thread. Thanks for any advice.

UPDATE!!!! Do ask me why but after 2 more fails with Kingo, I started a program that I had to use with Hisense Sero pro tablet to root it called Snappea. It doesn't root but needed to be connected to the Sero while rooting. So I brought it up and let I connect to my ATT SG4 I337 and the ran Kingo1.1.5. Kingo ran thru the steps fast, installed supersu, rebooted i337 and checked it, rebooted again and was done. Rooted. Thanks for your help

So now that you are rooted there are still not recovery or custom roms for this particular phone right? One of the main reasons I would be rooting is for the custom roms.
Thanks,
I can't wait to get a new rom. the MK2 broke a lot of my apps. Any apps I had hidden are no longer accessible. It's rootable but I want to get away from this ATT Garbage.

So which builds are rootable? I am just curious if developers are working on the ATT MF2 or we are forever doomed. I ask because one of the reasons I got this phone was because I wanted to root it.

Okay you guys got me. Now for my question what is the difference between MF2 and MF3? Is that a different bootloader or firmware because I understand it, it is not a different android version.
Thanks,
I have a brand new Galaxy S4 for AT&T and nothing will work to root this phone. Tried motochopper. When I run adb file as administrator the black box pops up for about 2 seconds and then its gone. Doesn't install SuperUser.
Also tried Odin 3.09 and the ID box says ):[COM4] and is always blue instead of yellow. Tried reinstalling the drivers restarting etc and its the same. When I hit "Start" it always fails.
Also tried the Kingo ROOT, it gets the phone into download mode and at the Recovery step, it fails.
Even Tried Terminal Emulator and once again, it would fail saying it couldn't find files even though they were on the SD card and it was formated correctly
I'm really stuck here and ready to give up. Please help!
Phone is SGH-I337, running Android 4.4.2 Kernel 3.4.0-1125940
What files are you using to root your s4?

Since you just purchase the s4 you must be on build NB1 which there is no single method to root developed. To root your phone you need to downgrade to MK2.

And which recovery are you using?
You can try to flash the standard Galaxy S4 rom (non-branded) via Odin, and then try to root that rom
Did you try to flash a pre-rooted custom rom? This might also help, and you might get a better rom (performance/battery-life)

Its not about root the latest phones comes with a version that the bootloader its locked. This phones are limited to Touch wiz roms due to the new decision of AT&T to lock the bootloader. There is nothing we can do until some body find a way to do it.

Same thing--I am on the original phone so not an expert on SafeStrap. Just know you need to not use any old methods and start reading in General/Q&A on any thread about nc1/nb1 and SafeStrap. I would post on there for advice from members like ted. There has also been a lot of similar questions on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320430
and people are there to help
Wish I had the exact answers, but am not in your situation. Just want to get you to the correct threads and people to get you sorted--
Now why would AT&T make it so hard / impossible to modify your device? They don't gain any advantage of it do they?
Sent from my unknown using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The main advantage is you can't use custom rooms to get around some of the blocked features. That way they can charge for those features.
It also allows them to go after the corporate contracts that want a more locked down device. The Government has been looking for a successor to the BlackBerry.

Please Help Guys, any help would be appreciated. Please if you could reply ASAP it would be great.
Ok so i have a Galaxy S4 At&t and I rooted my phone with safestrap installed. It has a locked bootloader, running android 4.4.2.
I decided to put the Hyperdrive RLS19 on my phone and I have an NC1 phone. I tried putting it in my stock rom, therefore I wiped the data and everything and installed the rom, I completed with the installation, but after I installed the rom i realized that my wifi, 4g Lte data, did not work. Also, i realized that my root disappeared and not only that, I also lost my safestrap recovery. So I thought that the first thing I should do is to root it, just like last time I used Towelroot by geohot and when i clicked make it rain, it said that i needed to ensure my internet connection. Which means that i needed wifi to get root and to get wifi i needed root. I even checked the build.prop file where i should put the line equals to false, but it already was false. I even restarted the phone several times but no luck.
<PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED! IDK IF IM THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM OR NOT PLEASE REPLY>
If you have lost safestrap recovery, it is better to start all over again by flashing stock.
To get WiFi, you will need to flash the modules based on the kernel you have.
To get data, you need to configure the correct APN
