Hi All,
I've spent all day trying to figure this out. I'm a pretty tech-saavy dude too, so I've finally decided to join this forum to post for help.
Carrier
Virgin Mobile
Model Number:
SGH-1337M
Baseband Version
I337MVLUAMG1
Kernel Version
3.4.0-897376
[email protected] #1
Build Number
JDQ39.I337MVLUAMG1
I've followed numerous guides and even 'successfully' rooted my phone using Odin, however when I launch applications like 'RootCheck' and 'Titanium' they both tell me it's not rooted, even though everything went as planned.
My gut feeling, based on some research, is that the stock firmware is overwriting my rooting stuff (I don't know the terminology yet!) when it boots up.
Anyway, I really want to root this bad boy! I just switched to the S4 after 6 long years of iPhones so I'm real stoked to get it feeling the way I want.
Could someone provide me a link to some proper files? I think that's where I get lost.
I currently already have downloaded and attempted to root using this:
- Samsung USB Driver (just verifying I do have this)
- Odin v3.07
- CF-Auto-Root-jfltecan-jfltevl-sghi337m.tar
Thanks in advance!

Hi guys,
I've been trying to root an SGS for 4-5 hours now and no success. I've tried one click methods and I tried Odin, but it doesn't recognise the phone. I did searches on xda and google but nothing I found worked. Maybe the problem lies because this phone is locked on 02 uk?
The current phone info is:
firmware: 2.1-update1
baseband: I9000ADJM1
kernel: [email protected] #2
build number: eclair.adjm1
* Also, I cannot boot into recovery or download mode with the 3-button thing*
I'm trying to root this and put the jellybean beta 3 on it. I'm doing this for a friend, so I'm not familiar with SGS rooting and flashing, I'm on a HTC desire myself and I found rooting that a breeze.
I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know how to root this thing and upgrade it, preferably a method that works with the O2 phone.
Sorry again if this information has been posted but I've been unable to find anything.
Thanks in advance,
Vlad

To unlock your sgs i9000 try an app on google play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwyLDEsImNvbS5oZWxyb3ouZ2FsYXh5c3VubG9jayJd) and some others (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=unlock+sgs)
For your root kernel (flash the zip in pda in odin) check out Chainfire's root kernels from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 Pretty extensive list so you should get sorted.
If you can't find the root kernel, try updating your official samsung firmware using the samsung kies software which you can download from their website. I did this with my i9000 and got onto 2.3.4 gingerbread and upgraded from there.
Hope this helps?

You can't flash without Download Mode.
With no Download Mode, get a Download Jig.
Thanks everyone, managed to update it with Kies to 2.3 (worked this time somehow). Then put CFroot on it, worked fine... then messed up trying to flash JB on it (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776738 )
at the moment I'm stuck in a bootloop, I can access recovery and download mode, but recovery can't detect any storage so I'm unable to flash any rom or wipe data... any ideas?
Did you unlock your phone before like the other posts suggested ?.
If you did not you can run into all sorts of problems so make sure is unlocked for all sims before modifying.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
Nope I wasn't able to unlock it since it wasn't rooted. It's fine now, managed to get GB working on it again then upgraded to ICS from CWM with full wipe. Gave it back to my friend to use today and I haven't had any angry phone calls to complain either because I did it right or because the phone's not working
I'll use one of the apps mentioned above to unlock it later and I'll try and get JB on it if I have the time.
Thank you all again for your help!
You're welcome :-$

No. It doesn't matter if it is Carrier locked or not. As for OP:
1. Flash semaphore ICS kernel via Odin in PDA
2. Then boot into recovery from there
3. Now flash the jellybean ROM
4. Now reboot recovery and wipe data/factory reset from new recovery.
5. Enjoy. Also I recommend either slim bean or cm9 for your ROM, since they are aosp and compiled from source.
Also FYI the only stand alone kernel that works with jellybean is devil kernel rc3

Actually my jelly beam ROM boots up faster than cm9, and is just as stable. It is my daily driver, its awesome. Everything works fine!
But not gonna lie the lastest rc cm9 builds are super fast. And perfect. His choice though

Thanks, but...
Used that method last time, but as I said after updating the phone I cannot get this to work any more :crying:
And, as a new member Im not allowed to post to that thread...
I have Avast installed, and for the firewall to operate it needs root. (one of the reasons to root).
Always worked flawless, and after the FW-update it still does... No sure why...

I had a rooted nexus7 3G 2012 model.. I have followed the below tutorial and upgrade to android 4.3.
http nexus7.wonderhowto . com/how-to/install-googles-official-4-3-jelly-bean-update-your-nexus-7-tablet-right-now-0148040
I had no idea that I have downloaded Wifi 4.3 version and flashed it. After flashing I cant see any signals of 3g feature. In setting the mobile networks option totally disappeared.
Can anyone help me please tell me how to get back the 3G feature. The tablet is just 2 days old..
Just two days old?
You should have installed stock 4.3 update and rooted the device.
Flashing the ROM of 4.3 3G version should help.. Btw do little research before you start with!!

Is that the correct version, I choosed. Sorry for all this dumb questions.
It would also be great. If anyone can provide me tutorial for flashing or restoring it. Dont take me wrong. I have searched but confused to find the right one. Just do me this last favour.
Thank you for all the replies and my problem is solved
Thank you for all the replies.. With your replies I got some info to make it successful. Thank You So Much.
I have installed
www. wugfresh .com/ - Nexus root toolkit.
In the first attempt. It totally bricked my device. But in the second try there was a option to flash if it is bricked and it went successfully.
I want to root my phone which I found towel route which I I downloaded but its not really working, which I found out is due to bootloader being locked. so I decided what I needed to do was unlock the bootloader but I'm reading all these forums which are talking about roms and I have no idea what that is. I was wondering if someone could kind of walk me through this a little bit like talk about it n smaller not so technical terms because I don't really understand it. I know some coding and a lot of the technical know-how but I've never really worked with phones and really deep programming I guess. I'm sure I could figure it out if someone explained it.

Here's a video that might help a little. It's sort of old, but depending on which version of android you're on it'll probably help you get root access at the very least
What firmware version are you on? If you're on newer firmware the vid the other guy linked to is not going to work for you. There are tutorials in the general forum that can help you.

Galaxy s4
I was able to root my phone using towel root, then I disabled Knox with supersu. I wanted to remove all the bloat wear so I thought getting a new rom would do it (I've been researching) and I tried that three times but it keeps resetting my phone to factory settings. What am I doing wrong? I tried CM and that pacman one. I really like the aok(whatever letter) one but it's not compatible with my phone. I have a galaxy s4 unlocked, it's at&t but I actually have tmobile. I have all the at&t software AND tmobile crud on here. I really want it gone. I was trying to install the roms through my sd card with my phone on odis mode.

Are you using safestrap and flashing touch wiz based roms? Cm and Pac will not work on your device if you're using safestrap.

Inever got around to downloading safestrap. I thought that was something you did after you downloaded the rom. And I've never heard of the other one. It shows up with something about verification problems. I should have written it down. It took so long for my phone to turn back on.

I'm not sure what firmware version your phone is on but I'm guessing it's on a newer version where cwm or twrp recoveries are not going to work. You'll need to install safestrap and install roms with it.

Hey guys... Before I get into this, I would like to say that i'm very new to this whole rooting thing, so please forgive me for my lack of knowledge on various terms and such, and I'm a first time user here at xda.
What's written below might get a little bit complicated so i will try to make it as detailed as possible. Please bare with me here.
So I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 sgh-i337 (AT&T) running on android 4.4.4 (with touchwiz, you guys know the deal). I really wanted stock android lollipop, because I really like the look and feel to it. When I decided to root the phone, I went through many tutorials and I tried many different methods, and none of them worked. The phone still worked fine, but SuperSU was not installed and Root Checker said the phone was not rooted. After scouring the internet, I found one tutorial that had my S4 type and the same version. At that point I realized that my android version was hindering my rooting process. The tutorial used Odin to flash a kernel (NC1), root the phone using towelroot, install SuperSU, (Root Checker too to check if it worked), and then flashing the original kernel again (my original kernel was NJ4). After following this process, my phone was rooted, and everything worked fine.
As I said before, I wanted a GPE ROM, and so I needed a custom recovery. I decided to install CWM, since most GPE ROMs used this specific recovery. Again, I followed many different tutorials, and after each and every one, I would try to go into Recovery mode, and it would just launch the stock recovery. I found another tutorial on another website that involved flashing the recovery from an app in the google play store, so I decided to try it out. I now regret this as it led to more problems. I followed these instructions, and when launching into recovery mode from that point on, I get the yellow triangle with the error message "System software is not authorized by AT&T"
Sure, I could get around it by going into download mode from there, canceling, and it would reboot like normal, and the phone still worked, but I needed to get ride of that error message.
Once again doing my research, I figured out that if I flash a stock firmware specific to my phone, it will reset the phone (the only stock firmware available has android version 4.2.2, which is a really popular version, and is compatible with most custom recoveries and ROMs, so I decided to flash the firmware, as it would also change the version back, right?) When I flashed it using Odin like the directions said, it failed. i then figured out that it failed because my binary counter is not 0. I looked into resetting the binary counter for the AT&T S4, and I found Triangle Away. However, in order to reset your binary counter, you need an unlocked bootloader, and the AT&T S4 (sgh-i337) has a locked bootloader (I don't want to use Triangle Away if it's going to brick my phone, i'd rather unroot and keep touchwiz than brick). In the process of finding this out, I also figured out that the only custom recovery that you could use on a locked bootloader S4 sgh-i337 is SafeStrap. But i heard when using SafeStrap you are limited as far as ROMs go? Would I be able to get a GPE 5.0 Lollipop ROM with SafeStrap? Cause if not I might just unroot using SuperSU and software update my phone (will that fix the error when trying to get to Recovery mode?) Also, if I install Safestrap, will it fix the error message?
Again, sorry for my inexperience in all of this, and thanks for staying with me here. Any help and additional information on what I should do (or any GPE Lollipop ROMs I should use that are compatible with my phone and version and such), as well as any links to tutorials are greatly appreciated (also, keep in mind that all of the vocab I know when rooting is used in this post, I am not aware of most other terms - again, forgive me).
You wrote a lot but I'm not sure what state your device is in right now and what you want to do. But as you've found out, safestrap is the only custom recovery you can use. And touch wiz based roms are the only ones you can use. Afaik there are no 5.0 custom roms you can use at this time.

Oh, thanks for the help! The phone currently works fine, and it is rooted, but when I go into Recovery Mode it gives me the yellow triangle with the error... Will installing SafeStrap fix that? Regardless, thanks for the help, really do appreciate it!

Also, if i were to update the phone to the next version (i heard there is a way to bump the S4 up in android version) would that reset the error in Recovery Mode? And I also heard that with SafeStrap, you are limited to ROMs on the same android version as the one on your phone? I really like 5.0, but if it's not possible to get it as the moment (and I haven't found any 5.0 ROMs for the sgh-i337 yet - you were right) i might just unroot using SuperSU and just update my version, unrooted and all. I'd rather have my phone be nice and clean than to have root on it with a corrupted recovery mode, and not make use of the root at all (I've seen other ROMs and I prefer 5.0). I might just try to make the phone feel as close to stock as possible by using more google apps and such (keyboard, messages, etc.). Regardless, thanks for the help and additional input, really do appreciate it!
