Hello,
I've been trying to enable tethering (BT, USB and WIFI) on my new S5 Active with no success. All the methods suggested here on XDA and on google did not work. It could be because this is an AT&T model.
Did anyone successfully did that?
Thanks
(I couldn't find a Galaxy S5 Active thread so I posted this question here)

"all the methods" is not really specific enough - you may have missed the one that works.
Either way you will need to be rooted. With the AT&T model, towelroot is the current method.
Once rooted you have two main options - an xposed module (there is one specifically for tethering, and wanam xposed has the entitlement check option as well), or replace the tethering provision apk with a hacked one. If you look over in the at&t forums you will find methods for both. While the xposed method MAY not work for the S5 active, I can't think of any reason why the other method wouldn't. Did you try either of those?
Also, without root, foxfi or clockworkmod tether should work, but they're only partial solutions.

I'm not sure of either of those. What I meant "everything" is editing the settings.db.
Yes I tried FoxFi and it cannot tether via BT to my car or to an iPad. This is what I've tried so far.
Can you please elaborate on this wanam xposed method that may work?
Forgot to add, my phone is rooted with towelroot.
Thanks

Ah, the settings.db method doesn't work for kitkat I believe.
You should probably go read up about xposed if you don't know about it already, but briefly, you need to be root to install the xposed framework.
Then, once xposed is installed and active, you choose different modules to install. wanam xposed is one specific one that has a lot of tweaks for Samsung in it. If you browse around the settings there is one that is to disable the entitlement check.
xposed is not for everyone, because modules can cause weird behavior on your phone (for example mine was giving me the battery cover popup often when unlocking my screen, not just when rebooting, and even more weird is the occasional speakerphone enabling without it really being enabled, or automatically enabled when the phone is not against my ear). But I have to admit, some of those modules are darned useful.
Anyway there are a couple good threads about tethering over in the AT&T GS5 forums.
The wanam module I installed has only one setting related to tethering and it's enabled.
I was asking specifically about the S5 ACTIVE model since it's AT$T proprietary and I have a feeling that has something to do with it.
Ah well, I guess I have to wait someone to figure this one out.
Thanks
T-mobile Xposed & Xtether worked for me
But only for 1 night... I watched a movie, went ta sleep. Woke up the next morning & it never worked again. Lets me enable the hotspot still & connect but doest lrt me online with any devices. Somene told mr to try Ua agent switcher for chrome, but that didnt seem to work ether... smh. Looking for other options asap.
The only way I was able to get tethering to work on my S5 Active was to use Foxfi's USB method.

I tried FoxFi too, but my main thing is to share my phone's connection to my car. FoxFi can't do that because it needs special software installed on the receiving station and obviously you can't do that on a car.
I was using my iPhone jailbroken with TetherMe. Question is if such software exists for Android.
Replace the tethering provision apk with a hacked one works on the galaxy S5 Active, at least on mine it did. You will still get the warning but after it goes away tethering starts up fine, all tethering works, wifi, usb and bluetooth.
Quick video on my S5 active using unlimited att data plan, I also found a way to get around the att throttling of the unlimited data plan about 5 months ago, I will admit, it will be very easy for att to stop or correct, so I will selfishly keep to myself as I know it would be abused but will say it requires no root.:good:

Can you elaborate more on the bluetooth part? I don't care about WiFi or USB tethering, they work right out the box. Bluetooth is what's been bugging me because my car needs that to display traffic and other info on the navigation screen.
What I saw from your video is that you have USB and WiFi tethering option (as I do) but NO bluetooth.
Can you confirm BT works too without having to install 3rd party software on the client side? If yes, can you share that apk?
Thanks

Well I may have not explained well, this is really for people who have unlimited data or a plan that doesn't natively allow tethering. Also while usb and wifi tethering that is built in works, since there is no native bluetooth you must use third party software, foxfi I can verify works via DUN but is slow, just need to install foxfi, and create a dial up network, probably won't work with what your wanting since I believe you need a PAN network.

FoxFi does not work. It's the first app I've tried. It needs a proprietary client software installed on the receiving station. Useless for me.
On the plan, I'm not worried about that, I've been tethering my iPhone 5 forever with no problems so far.
Now that you mentioned I need a bluetooth PAN, I installed a PAN module but it says /system/bin/pand could not be found on your phone.
It's a new thing to look for. If I can find a pand that works on S5, I have a feeling I'll be in business.
Thanks
Ya DUN requires nothing installed on the client but isn't the preferred way now a days but does work. But in your case it would be useless.
Can anybody with a Sprint/Verizon or Unlocked Galaxy S5 check and see if there's a file named pand in /system/bin? And if yes, can you please share it? I think only AT$T's versions don't have it
Thanks

I have the opportunity to buy a Sprint LG G2 but would like some input from this community about the WiFi tethering capabilities of this device. I currently have an LG OG and there are issues with the WiFi tethering on it but I also have an LG Nexus 5 that runs WiFi thethering flawlessly. Since this device is said to be similar to the Nexus 5 I was hoping the Wifi tethering worked well on it also. I use FoxFi WiFi tethering app on most of my devices. It does not work on the LG OG however. I just basically want to know which tethering app works and which one doesn't.
THANKS!!
Sprint completely blocks all tethering access. Even through foxfi and open garden etc. You have to pay for the tethering service. The mobile data is indeed truly unlimited but the catch is its LIMITED to there mobile. As far as I know there is no way around it unless you root the device your wanting to tether but I'm not even positive that will work.

Thanks for your reply but apps like FoxFi allow you to tether without being detected for tethering. You still are deducted for data usage but not tethering. I was mainly asking if tethering apps work on this device because the one I'm getting is on Boost mobile, its not 4G but their 3G is good and for the price its actually great. So, if someone with this device that is rooted would kindly install Foxfi and tell me if it allows you to tether it to your PC I would appreciate it very much....Thanks..
Right I tried it on a unrooted Sprint g2 and I couldn't find ANY workarounds at all. That's what my input was on so yea. Someone else will chime in for you your welcome.
In order to get tethering working on the G2 for Sprint you must be rooted. Instructions are in the sprint develolment forum. Tethering apps do not work. The method is to modify the stock tethering app. Its the only current method available.

I know how to root this device and understand that it needs to be rooted to use wifi tether to make it work. I had a feeling this device had the same problem as the LG OG on tethering....I have TrevE's WiFi Tether on my OG and though I can get internet connection and download regular files, for some reason I can't download torrents and I've tried every setting combination possible. I was hoping this device had the same system as the Nexus 5 and not the OG..
Its titled "native hotspot" cant post links right now. short on time. As far as torrents go all sprint has to do is block torrent sites, and ip addresses associated. If you have tethering and cant do torrents... its likely blocked on sprint's side. Btw, downloading torrents via mobile data is a bad idea and I strongly advise you dont do so for many reasons.

Thanks, I'll try to find the post...I've used wifi tethering on a few different Boost Service (sprint) phones with no problems what so ever....if I used FoxFi Tethering App. I can usb tether using PDAnet and it will work but most of the time I need to be able to use WiFi.
May I ask exactly what your concerns are about downloading torrents via mobile data? I've done it for a couple years now without any problems...
Update: I looked it up and it looks good except that I won't be able to update the Rom at this time...
I dont have concerns about torrents, but you should. Frankly, if you dont know why or havent researched it, Im not one to tell you. Good luck.

Well, I appreciate all your input anyway....I just have to believe there is someone on this forum that has their device flashed to Boost that knows what I am talking about.
I do know what you are talking about. I have a G2. Ive used pdanet and alot of other tethering apps. The thread I pointed you to is the only way to tether on the G2 right now on Sprint, period. There are no other known mods or.apps for tethering on the G2. If that mod will work on Boost I have no idea and I assume there are very few that have a g2 on Boost, if anyone does.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was saying you didn't know what you were talking about, I apologize if it sounded as if I did. I was just hoping someone here had theirs on Boost and was familiar with how tethering worked on it. From what I can tell reading that thread and the thread on the Rom you have to have for the tethering mod, its pretty stable and the features are good too. I have been trying to figure out what to do because I have the opportunity to get a G2 or HTC One for the same price and am having a hard time making up my mind on which one will work the best for me. I prefer the G2 for its hardware but the development is better on the One. I really appreciate your help though, as I have said before....

I searched around before deciding to make a new thread. Did not see anything specific to what I had a question about, unless it is buried deep in another thread.
Is there a suggested de-bloat list for the Verizon Note 3 running on the OB6 Lollipop firmware? For NON-ROOTED phones.
What I have turned off so far has not caused any issues seen yet.
I would like to make sure that the packages that track data usage are turned off, as well as any apps that report back to Verizon.
Would greatly appreciate if someone could post even a partial list to get this started.
I would also like to add that I am using the free version of FoxFi and tether is working!
You install FoxFi, then when you try to check the start tether box for the first time, it will make you setup a lock screen pin/pattern. After that it will install a certificate.
Once you have that done, when you try to enable tether again, it pops up a message that will take you to the Default built in tether. Once you click to enable that, tether starts working.
Here is something odd I noticed.
You can go back into the FoxFi app once you are tethered and working, then turn off tether WITHIN the FoxFi app. The default hotspot app remains enabled and continues to work.
Anyone else notice this? Also wondering if the FoxFi data limit is still imposed after you turn the tether off in its app.

Unless you are on a grandfathered unlimited data plan, Verizon's Hotspot should already be usable even without WiFi. Last I saw...all Verizon tiered data plans included hotspot.

Yes At&t......I will need root then because I'm unlimited data....This sucks......If I want to use my data by tethering, I should be able too. This is dumb
In the same boat with Verizon on unlimited. Foxfi works, but only via USB (cable connected) or Bluetooth (slow ~1 Mbps). I love this phone, but miss being able to use the Hotspot for the rare times I need it.
I believe there is a beta feature on the pdanet USB client on the PC side that will allow a hotspot generated from the computer attached via USB. Clunky but better than nothing if you have other devices that need access to the connection in a stationary setting for now.

Now that we have root, I wonder how we can enable this?
I use to just change a couple of numbers in buildProp on other phones (Rom Toolbox .prop)
Any help would be appreciated
EDIT:
Found the below info but I don't think it will work. I DID NOT try this but it is tempting.
4. Connect your phone to your PC and issue the below commands:
adb shell
echo "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
adb reboot
5. Now, install Terminal Emulator app from the Play Store [HERE] and launch it.
6. In Terminal Emulator, enter below code one by one:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit

Yeah I'm not entirely sure how we might be able to get it to work. I've tried adding dun to the APN - edited the build.prop and added the lines you put above into the build.prop file. Those worked to no avail.
I edited the line inside build.prop "ro.build.target_operator=ATT". I changed ATT to "OPEN", and that did happen to allow tethering. But from the devices I connected to my phone - they were unable to connect to the internet. It was almost like ATT was blocking service of tethering. I didn't try to do all of those edits at the same time though. Perhaps maybe then?

Yeah I tried using all three of those methods - but it seems like only the method of turning the ro.build.target_operator to OPEN avoids the "Authorizing" screen and lets the Tethering turn on. But while the phone is still able to access the internet, the other devices cannot access the internet - having DNS issues.
I'm curious if perhaps the "system/app/Entitlementcheck-" app retrieves a token to allow other devices to connect, and using "OPEN" makes it so the entitlementcheck application is not even used. Not sure entirely how it works. I've seen in other device sections, such as the Pixel, where someone edited the phone's own entitlementcheck app equivalent to let them use tethering (here). Not sure if it would be possible to something similar here.

I just did this and you solved one of my pet peeves but not my tethering issues.
The phones still connect to my phone however they have no internet while tethering.
What you did solve is (by changing the prop to NAO vs ATT) is removing the annoying carrier name on the left side of the screen and also removed the annoyingly large ATNT 4G symbol. Instead its a neatly placed, small 4glte icon.
This issue is still persisting even after changing the tether enforcement to 0 from 5 in the system xml
Is hotspot/tethering option missing on all us carrier in the settings I'm using sprint version & it's not here at all...this phone is useless 2 me if I can't find a way to fix this.

I tried this but didn't work for me with AT&T. I have a Tethering shorcut, but it takes you to the hotspot settings to turn it on manually like you mentioned. So I was excited to try this app out, however after I installed it, it just says it's Enabled (but it's not) and then when I tap it again it says Enabled again, not Disabled. Unless I go into my settings and turn it on, then the app will say Disabled (but doesn't really). So I guess I'll stick with what I have for now.
Hey I ended up returning my S8. I apologise for putting this info out about the Tethering app. It works perfectly on all my other ROMS. It is the only "widget" type app that worked on my LG G5 on stock rooted FW on MM. Anyway, I am not sure if you guys got Tethering to work on Verizon or whatever, but I had no issues with it on T-Mobile... However this app didn't work on T-Mobile on my S8 even.
Buy from Samsung?

You didn't by any chance purchase the phone directly from Samsung did you? I had the exact same problem with an S8 purchased directly from Samsung (got the free Gear VR promo) and I have Sprint.
There was no hotspot option anywhere in the setup menus. And of course, I did not notice this until 2 weeks later when I was on a trip. The hotel WiFi was messed up and I needed to use hotspot. It's not that it did not work, there was no option at all in Setup for Hotspot and Tethering.
I talked to Sprint, took it to a Sprint store for help, and talked to Samsung tech support. Nothing they all tried fixed it. Both Sprint and Samsung suggested the phone might be defective and I should pursue getting a replacement. That didn't make sense to me because WiFi and Cell Data were working fine, and hotspot is just software.
My fix was to do a full Factory Reset and then set it all up again. Tedious, but when it came back up, the Hotspot and Tethering option were there and it works perfectly now.
Recent update messed it up again?
Tried the adb method of Get/Push revealing Hotspot via Quick Tiles. Didn't work.
Any other ideas for regaining hotspot on the device? Without rooting?
Current date: Jan 7 2018.
i have same problem too, waiting for update
I tried that https://www.xda-developers.com/thre...ickbaity-tricks-for-your-new-galaxy-s8-or-s8/ but I cant even try itcoz I get "because an app etc about some permission", I tried to disable so many cant figure it out
So how does one Quick Toggle Tether? I use it all the time in my car
have a couple of vzw S7s on old unlimited data plans. One is running 8.0.0 on baseband CRE5. I am trying to figure out a way to enable the mobile hotspot without root, if possible. The trick with ejecting the SIM card and then sliding it back and hitting mobile hotspot doesn't work on this phone as it only stays enabled for a second or two and then once the sim card is back in turns off.
1. What is the best option for enabling hotspot?
2. If it requires a custom rom, is there a stock based rom with this enabled?

You might have luck with some of the non-root roms. Otherwise, you might see if something like FoxFi is updated and working with Oreo. I used that in the past for wifi tether without root. If neither of those are options, a paid usb or bluetooth tether app on play store should work (granted it's not as good as wifi and most of the time requires a third party pc addon)
I would go with a stock based rom. There is only one oreo one right now from jrkruse that takes a moment to install but works really well out of the box.

I am running 8.0.0 CRE5 that I flashed about a week ago on my 930V and have no problem to enable hotspot. I was not able to use it before on a rooted rom, only USB tether. I can bluetooth tether now and hotspot. I cannot USB tether.

Just to be clear, the usb, bluetooth, and wifi tether are all built into Android as a whole. Verizon adds limitations to all three, checking the eligibility of tether against your current plan. IF you pay for tether or have their newer unlimited plan, all three will work. If not, you will need a third party ROM that has edited .prop files that tell the OS to not care. As far as I know, once it's enabled though via .prop edits, it works (including USB tether). For unrooted Verizon S7, even third party apps can USB tether but only via third party applications (and typically a PC program needed as well to make this custom tunnel).

I realize that, maybe it's because I am on the Verizon network thru straight talk and they do not monitor it like verizon.
Hi all. I am in the same boat as the OP. I have the S7E model SM-G935V. I have Oreo CRE5. I am grandfathered into the UDP. Foxfi no longer works for me. How can I get tethering back? I am willing to root and put in a custom ROM if necessary.
I saw someone mention a jrkruse ROM, but I can't find that anywhere. Please help. Thanks in advance!
