[Q] How to find information about bootloader? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

*Foreword*: I googled now about 1 hour and did not find anything concerning my problem.
Hi guys,
since I just decided to upgrade to KitKat, I'm in need of a new bootloader.
Problem is, Odin is refusing to work.
It says that everything went fine and all, but after booting some system information apps still tell me I'm on an old bootloader.
My thoughts are that I maybe have a locked bootloader installed so I can't install a new one. Where can I find out whether that's the case or not? I already tried various USSD codes and stuff, but they all seem to be outdated.
Also, why are there different opinions here on xda how to flash a bootloader?
On guide says: "Flash it under 'Bootloader' in Odin".
Another one says: "Flash it under 'PDA' in Odin". As you may guess, I'm really confused right now.
My current specs:
i9505
XXUDMH5 Bootloader
XXAUEML6 System
Odin 307 running as admininstrator on Win 8.1 Pro
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance guys!

Just flash the latest stock rom. That will automatically install the latest bootloader.

Why in the world would you want to "update" your bootloader?
I think it would be worth your while to read up on bootloaders
before you end up with a shiny brick with a 5 inch black screen.
Here is a good link to find out what a bootloader is and does:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Bootloader
Bootloaders have nothing to do with the speed or the stability of the phone.
Good luck!

lol this is the first time I see someone wants a newer bootloader.. As the post above me, a newer bootloader won't make your phone faster ..Anyway you already have the latest knox one

hi,
no I don't look for speed.
I was thinking that it could have some impact when trying some ROM, like :
kitkat GE Rom which are not stable, even if the rom comes i9505GE official Google edition rom which should be stable...
I was thinking that the difference between a i9505 and a i9505GE could be the bootloader, as the hardware is exactly the same...
thanks
Olivier
You are on a pre KNOX boot loader so stick with it. No need to update. Updating to a KNOX boot loader will give you a knox flag once it a tripped there's no going back. With a KNOX boot loader you can not downgrade as well. I'm on the old boot loader and custom 4.3 roms work well.

Mobile ODIN is the reason
Hello,
I have a MJ5 bootloader and to use the app Mobile ODIN I am advised to use the MJ7 version or I might soft-brick my phone...
I already have the KNOX flag at 1, so I suppose I should not worry about that... And I can't find anywhere (I did search the forum and google) how to do this.
Before anyone asks.. I have and work with OS X and I am aware of Heimdall (ODIN replacement for macs). But I tried using it and it did not recognize my phone to download my .PIT file. Also, its quite confusing about heimdall packages instead of normal files..
So, Im going for Mobile ODIN which seems to be the easiest way to ODIN.
Can anyone help? Should I worry about anything else than KNOX flag that I am not aware of when changing the bootloader?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Downgrade to older stock ROM N9005?

Hey all!
Is it possible to downgrade from a newer (NE3) firmware to an older (ND3) through Odin or it will brick my phone because of the bootloader?
The only things I know are that 1) Downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 is not possible 2) It's possibile to install a custom older rom on new bootloader and vice versa BUT I don't know if it's possible with stock roms with Odin.
I looked for a solution but nothing found and no one answered me so I opened this thread to find out a solution.
Thanks in advance.
UP still interested because NE4 + custom kernel gives problems that others doesn't have

I never actually tried going back to an older version but I really don't see why you shouldn't. As long as it's KitKat 4.4.2 just try it should work. I downgraded my Modem and haven't had any issue.
With the Bootloader worry...did you even change the bootloader? As well as the Modem you have to do that separate to the Rom, as flashing a Rom doesn't touch Modem an Bootloader!!! If you don't know how to do that please just leave it alone though unless you read, read, read a lot on how to do that.

Thanks for the reply, every time I install a new rom I make sure to update the bootloader and modem too, and from what I can read from the Synapse app I have the NE3 modem and NE4 bootloader.
I'm asking how to go back to older roms because going from 4.4.2 to 4.3 updating the bootloader with Odin you obtain only a fancy paper weight, and I didn't know if going from newer to older 4.4.2 bootloader it was the same story.

I'm pretty sure there won't be an issue mate since I flash between custom roms almost daily which are most of the time different models. If you want to be 100% sure wait for someone to confirm as I'm rooted since I got the chance to do so.
Thanks to the developer Civato I read on his FlexKat thread he correctly downgraded his bootloader from NE6 to ND6 with Odin...
So problem solved, this is definitely possible.
Thank you everyone for your replies :good:
Downgrading bootloaders on the same version generally tends to work OK, mainly because on 4.3 Samsung patched the security flaw which stopped you going <MJ7
Kith Kitkat I never had any issues flipping back and forth.--- Until it's a BL upgrade with OS Number change (IE: 4.4.3 if it has new BL) then it shouldn't work.
hi. sorry, this is probably an old thread but I need some help, please and somehow,Google got me here. I want to downgrade (not really downgrade) my N9005 to 4.4.2.
I currently have a custom ROM(resurrection remix v5.6.9,in settings it says that I have android 6.0.1 marshmallow). Also,I have a custom recovery(TWRP). Well,I would like to install the KitKat stock ROM and really did a lot of research but I cannot find it anywhere :'( . Do you know any source? And also, can I flash it with mobile ODIN? When I opened Mobile Odin Pro it said that if I don't have the boot loader for the ROM I want to install then I will experience a soft brick. Isn't TWRP a good boot loader?
Also, does it matter what version of N9005 I own? mine is: XXUGBOJ1. Could I flash smth that is not for this ..base band is it called?...
pls help
I'm such a newbie and I don't wanna mess up

Get a 4.4.2 fw and flash with windows odin. Not really familiar with mobile odin. Find fw for you country csc. Flashing other csc fw sometimes requires pit file so better get the 1 for your country or originally came with the phone.

Need Guidance...

Hey guys,
I'm going to install a custom ROM today to see if that maybe fixes my SensorHub not working. I just need guidance on the correct procedure. I have a SM-N900 model (N900XXUEBOL2) running Lollipop 5.0. Do I first need to root, or can I install a custom ROM straight from the stock recovery? It seems like there aren't may ROMS available for the SM-900 model, but I've found one that seems to have good battery life and performance: TR-ROM. This is the procedure I will follow:
1) Root phone with CF-Auto-Root-ha3g-ha3gxx-smn900.zip
2) Use ODIN to flash n900-cwm-recovery-6.0.5.0-kk_L5.0(0812).tar
3) Flash TR-ROM from CWM: TR-ROM XDA
Is this all correct? I just want to make sure that I don't brick my phone!
Also, how can I revert back to stock if I need to?
Thanks so much!!!

OK. ..so are the 3 steps I mentioned above correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/general/guide-root-note-3-sm-n900-5-0-install-t3069670
I'm trying to follow that guide, but the build number of N900 on the CF-Root site says:
LRX21V.N900XXUEBOA6
Whereas mine is:
N900XXUEBOL2
Will is still work? Also, it says a locked bootloader will probably brick your device. How do I check if mine is locked?
I've rooted and installed custom roms on many devices before - I'm not sure why rooting and installing custom rom on the Note 3 is so daunting...
Google?

I wouldn't be asking here if I hadn't already Google'd extensively.
But of course... The phone is brand new, so there's no info yet available. I understand...
Yes, do as you wrote in the first post. Should be ok, as those are the latest files.

I'm finding that there is actually TOO much information (too many variables). That's why I'm asking specifically about my version, as I can't seem to get my head around it - and rather than brick my phone, I'm merely seeking a bit of guidance from someone more experienced than me. In the past, when I was rooting previous phones, I received a lot of useful information and help from XDA - but it seems like now all I'm getting are sarcastic remarks and general unfriendliness. Why is that?
You have N900 its an exynos model not the qualcom .Not something that has a big following on here .
The links in your post point to zips , whats the point of me downloading a zip ??
CF autoroot you need to read the instructions regarding builds .
Locked boot loader no idea for that model .
CWM yes flash via Odin if its the correct one for your model .
Flash rom yes the rom will give you the method .

Correct flash order for rooting a stock firmware?

Hi guys
I recently moved to the note 4 910F from another device.
As I have always favored custom roms ( regardless if I was using a samsung or LG or another brand device ).
The problem I am facing now is that the xda Note4 forum seems to be incredibly messed up. There are literally tens of threads with useless information and whole new threads just for one download link or something.
If someone new like me comes to the Note 4 forum he will not know where to start. The previoux device I used had a beautifully organized XDA section.
Anyway. What I did until now was to flash :
1. flashed cf-root over the stock firmware and verified that it worked
2. installed busybox
3. tried to install TWRP as I have always used it . But , Their page said to make sure I have the correct bootloader installed.
So, I got back to the rom page that I wanted to use and the dev had links there for the correct bootloader and modem. Downloaded and flashed them with odin. Now my device was restarting every 1 minute or so and I no longer had any IMEI and baseband version was unknown
I fixed it by flasks the stock firmware with odin
Can you guys help me out with some correct information on how to be able to flash a custom rom ? I know how to root it but what bootloader do I need in order to install the custom recovery and flash a new rom ?
Thank you in advance.

Rooted, but cant get further, it seems we have reached an impasse.

Hi guys, (sorry for the poor usage and terminology as I'm still getting acquainted with the rooting and custom rom culture)
BACKGROUND; I downgraded to Android 4.4.2 KitKat Baseband NB1, and from there rooted using towel root. This is an AT&T
SGH I337.
As stated above I'm running a rooted at&t s4 and I am trying to flash a custom rom on it. However after reading many tutorials and struggling, I've came to the conclusion that my MDL is preventing this from happening. I cannot seem to flash a rom no matter what application I use (I've tried Flashfire and TWRP with no luck) and on my most recent attempt to flash with TWRP the phone booted back to the same 4.4.2 kitkat interface and when I tried to access bootloader with home+volume up combo, a warning popped up and said secure fail kernel in the top right and in the center of the screen said "System software not authorized by AT&T found on phone." This made me come up with the conclusion that the MDL is preventing me from flashing custom roms. I've looked around and tried to find something to block the MDL, and the most common thing that pops up in the s4 forums is called Loki Doki, but I have yet to find a link that is not dead. So here I am with an s4 running KitKat which really sucks as I'm sure you guys can imagine.
That being stated, I would like some help on this and eventually be able to run a custom ROM. Any help is appreciated, Thanks !
Read the first few posts of this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221. It will give you information on what is possible and what isn't.
