[4.4.4] OTA Changelog - Droid Ultra General

Log attached below

Great now I will flash the ota!

Thanks for the info, nice to see everything in one place.

Does it still have all the poor graphical changes from the last OTA?
The status bar, GPS icon, etc.

You mean the icons Google chose? Yep.

Some changes that aren't so obvious but are very welcome:
In the QuickContact view, choosing the Messaging icon now properly opens Hangouts if that is what you have chosen to handle SMS
The infamous Home Button Bug is now fixed
USB OTG Mass Storage mounting works automatically again, as it did in the original firmware (awesome!); also, the mounting options once again appear in Settings -> Storage
Or at least that's what I've heard

USB mass storage? You mean there is now an option that isn't MTP?

Ugh, guess I won't be taking this OTA either.
Annoying since I'm curious to play with the chromecast screen casting.

*New power control widget. The location (GPS) toggle now will show as half on half off if you're using network only location. Will show fully on if GPS is enabled.

calling/text LTE bug has gone, all fuctions on att/tmo sim, chromecast isn't compatible yet.

You aren't taking os updates because Google went away from ICS blue? So you'll never take another update or buy a device that isn't heavily skinned. Interesting choice.

No, I'm referring to the USB host mad storage mode, which allowed you to use USB storage devices and USB flash drives with the phone. This feature was "accidentally" removed in a previous update, but it now works.
Another option besides PTP and MTP would be nice wouldn't it?

Each time you pressed the home button, the OS registered two presses. It caused problems with home screen home button reassignment.

Mmm this should be good for me using the phone outside US, Im getting weak signal.
An off topic but important question:
Does anybody know if I can install twrp recovery just being rooted and not having unlocked boot?
There is a flasheable file for verizon phones which adds some gsm goodies, I have got better signal on my droid razr and razr m.

No you have to use safe strap it does the same thing even looks like twrp because it is based off it. Twrp is for unlocked boot loader only. With Safe strap you can install zip files. As a matter of fact it does everything twrp does. Only difference is twrp flashes Roms. Safe strap allows this as well but has ROM slots you install on.

Alright, thanks.
I have used safestrap with droid razr, but can we install roms on main system? Or use rom slots?
Can I create and restore backups of my current stock rom?
My droid ultra is not rooted because I find it very tedious and little difficult to do.
I have had cliq, cliq xt, backflip, bravo, defy, atrix, atrix2, droid razr and razr m (yes, I like moto) but none of them were that difficult to root, with razr m, bravo and defy there is just an apk for that.

What carrier are you on? I'm on AT&T and been doing some research and thinking about picking Maxx up but there has been so many issues that I'm hesitant to. Can you please share your experience? Maybe in a pm since I don't want the thread to go off topic but if everything works on AT&T after 4.4 update then I'll go pick one up now
TIA!

[ZIP]Orange UK ICS signal boost!

alcurtis93 said:
I thought i would create a new CMW flashable zip for people on orange uk moving to Custom Roms, or even those who are on generic firmware but don't have this capibilty.
It basically enables Signal boost technology (UMA) for Galaxy S devices when in low signal areas.
This CMW zip works perfectly. This zip is tried and tested on most roms
However Give me and others feedback on if this works for you on other Rom's.
Remember this is Orange Network only!
Find the zip attached.
Just flash in recovery.

Can anyone confirm if this works on the S3? Bought this S3 today after being told instore that it features the Signal Boost software only to get it home and find out I had been lied to . Signal at home is terrible. So I'll have to take the phone back if I can't get this sorted.

Ok. I'll try that now mate. I presume that you have the app fully working? I'd be ovr the moon.
Ok, so I've managed to get the app installed and openable. I have enabled signal boost and I have the orange house icon in the top left of the screen however I am unable to make calls when I have no mobile network coverage. It seems that the app isn't correctly routing the calls.
Just to warn you, this app causes crazy wake locks and ruins of battery life, only use it if you really need to!

I'm getting somewhere now. I can now get the green house icon to turn green which gives me a "signal boost". Great for texting, however when I make or receive a call the signal and or app just drops leaving me with no signal. It then restarts after about a minute and goes green again. Any suggestions?
Bump i would like to use this, or is there a orange stock rom with it on?

This is a very good phone, probably one of the best for this "smaller" size, I don't understand why Verizon has to mess around with it (starting with the installed bloatware that can't be remove).
I guess this phone also comes with a locked bootloader, this means that you won't be able to change anything.... am I right?
Thanks!
C.
Yes, the retail version has a locked bootloader. The Developer Edition has an unlockable bootloader.

While you cannot remove the bloatware, you can disable (freeze) most of it. Go to Settings, Apps, then into each app to disable it.

Oh wow I thought I saw in a review it didn't that's awesome! What we have to do is change the build. Prop file to be a different phone then SideLoad it and set it up then you can switch back to your original build. Prop. Maybe if you made it a Razr i or something?

I believe Verizon is blocking Wallet Bea cause of their own NFC payment app called Isis. It's a multi carrier endeavor. Supposedly launches soon.

AT&T Tab2 10.1 (i497) jelly bean update now available

Also, maybe it's just me, but I have to say that, for all of the cries from people for JB, I've really not noticed much of a difference since the update.

It isn't as though I had any problems with the tablet before, except for some occasional lag, but, except for the icons and some minor cosmetic changes, I haven't noticed anything to distinguish it from ICS.
Of course, I'm grateful that they're at least updating it. Especially since there would be so many people crying if they didn't.
Maybe I'm too oblivious to notice the changes.

I just noticed something that has been changed that I don't like: in the settings from the taskbar you used to be able to turn mobile data on and off, and now that button is gone and I can't figure out how to get it back.

The way I see it, the mobile data radio button was most handy so that I could make sure I was not using my data plan when WiFi was on. I preferred having this feature, and I have noticed a difference in the past when I thought I was using WiFi only to learn I wasn't. Maybe you don't think it was useful, but I certainly found it to be very much so. Now I have to drill down into the settings to manually turn off mobile data instead, which is a pain.
Besides, airplane mode usually shuts off Bluetooth, GPS, mobile data, and WiFi, or at least it has on nearly every device I've ever owned. In other words, from a practical standpoint: baby with the bathwater.

I guess you are right. Airplane mode does shut off way too much. How about adding a data toggle from the Play Store?

Should be in /system/app/
I highly recommend a hard reset after updating to 4.1.
I didn't the first time and it was super laggy and buggy. After formating, it's smooth now.

I've been using the app called Foxfi from the play store which has been working great for me and that's without root! There is a free version that limits the amount of time you can use it or a paid version for like 7 bucks. A little costly but I've been happy so far. Only thing is once u go into the Foxfi app and turn on mobile hot spot u will get a pop up about needing to set up through verizon, DO NOT hit cancel, instead just push your home button and wha la!! You have working mobile hotspot! Hope this helps.

Not sure. But I noticed something in SQLite.
Settings storage
settings.db
Global
51 Wifi_watchdog_on 1
I'm thinking - hoping- that that is the entitlement/subscription check. Anyone willing to find out?
Changed it to 0... Still getting Use of this service requires a subscription...
I think the Wifi Watchdog setting is to alert you when a WiFi network is in range....
I've just been using the notifications panel toggle hack, then pressing the Home button when the error comes up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2482867

Thanks for the heads up and trying it out. I'd change it back to 1, though. I did some searching and it seems that watchdog is a security measure to try and keep hackers from accessing your phone through wifi. So either what you were thinking is right or the info I have found is. But I'm no expert. So I don't know which it is. Lol. Either case is seems cruicial or important. So probably best to not mess with that.
I have the toggle going, also. I just figured it was worth a shot, at least. I just get a little annoyed having to press the Home button every time. But at least we have tether. I can deal with that until such time that they figure it out.
Thanks again for trying that!
I have actually investigated this a bit, and like new devices, the check is now built in Framework-res.apk. You need to decompile, edit the lines that call the command to check for subscription, and recompile. I have tried quite a few times but could never get the signing right and replace the file on the device without a bootloop, so I gave up. I think I have more specific information on like the 2nd page of the we have root thread.

Moto G4 Play, (Marshmallow), Tethering Fix

Per wrenhal's request, I have generated an app to enable tethering for moto G4 phones that have it disabled.

Thanks for this. Does this require an unlocked bootloader? Will it work with Android security patch level of Feb 1, 2017?

This is for the Amazon ads version of the g4 play. What this is supposed to do is patch in memory the build.prop file to allow tethering when the phone tries to check in with the carrier to see if tethering is allowed. No it does not need an unlocked bootloader. If it's the same as the fix I've been working with him on then it is only a temporary fix as rebooting the phone will lose the option and the app has to be run again.
@ledothis you may want to describe to them how long it takes to run the app and what they'll see on their screen.

Thanks. Yes, I'd like to know more. I was reading the progress made on removing the ads from the Amazon version and saw your request to do the same to the build.prop file to allow tethering, but I didn't see any more info on that until this thread.
I have the Verizon Prepaid version and I'd like to know what it does to see if it could work on that.

It appears to go through similar processes as the adb instructions. I got the moto logo for awhile and then it went black. But it stayed there for quite a while. Almost ten minutes. So I just rebooted the phone. I'll try again tonight after a clean reboot.

Ok I had a chance to do it again yesterday. The app says patching assets and then restarting and then the phone stored at the moto logo screen for over 5 minutes. I then just rebooted. Should it take that long? I don't remember the adb exploit taking that long.

Tethering/hotspot just requires a simple build.prop entry
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
this app does the job for you.
you can also freeze the entitlement app with titanium

Are you on an Amazon version of the g4 play? And what entitlement app? Don't you have to have root to freeze apps? No root on this device.
If you ran this app can you tell me how long it took the app to make the change and return to a usable state?

yes, root is required for any of the changes at all in this thread.
However, for USB tether, easytether works without any root access.

You do not need root. We are dealing with a unique case for marshmallow g4 play phones. Wrhenal has confirmed this.

Yeh it shouldn't take 5 minutes. It should be about 30 seconds. I need to retest the app on my phone I have a feeling I left out a file when I packaged up the application.
Everything up until it restarting sounded good though.

I retried the app after cleaning out my phone. It failed for me as well exactly how you described.
I have found this issue and resolved it.
Attached is a new apk to try.
Note for other people:
This app only works on Marshmallow. (ie. 6.0.1 android).
The app does not work with the 2017 security patch

I'll get to try this in the morning. Hopefully it works as I'd like to tether my tablet while camping this weekend. I'll uninstall the first app. Anything else?? Do I need to make sure all the adb stuff is deleted??
Thanks again for all of this.

Uninstalling should be enough.

Same issue. Patching assets (actually takes longer than the first one), then restarting... and then either a black screen (with backlight you can see) or the Moto logo and it just sits and sits... Waited almost 5 minutes once and nothing. But more than a minute each time.
I then cleared the data/cache of the app and still the same thing. I just can't get it to work.
For info:
I'm on 6.0.1 , Patch level July 1, 2016
Build: MPI24.241-2.35-1
Do I need something in developer options turned on?
Oh well..
Yeh sorry guys I just retried the app on my phone and it wasn't working.
There is some intermittent issue that I need to solve.
I am busy tonight but I will take a look tomorrow.

Ok. Thanks. Let me know when you have a new version and I'll test it out.

Okay I just got back from my camping trip. had no cell service at all where we were so it didn't matter. I've downloaded this copy and tested it and it appears to be working fine. I ran the app and let it patch the assets restart came up allows hotspot reboot hotspot is lost rerun the program let it restart and hotspot is back again.
Would be interesting if some people in the ad removal thread who have already upgraded to nougat could test this and see if it worked.

Does anyone know how to make this APK work after security update.
