[Q] From stock to custom. how to? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to find a thread where there are steps from how to get custom rom when you begin with stock without root.
I had an s2 and I could flash philz recovery (temporary recovery) and install custom rom from there, but I don't know how to do it on the S4.
Is there any tutorial from how to get the custom rom installed on the s4?
(this is the hardest part, the rest is simple)
ps: yes, I know how to recover and fix broken phone, I always use a AOSP rom, but I can't seem to understand how to get a custom rom installed on a phone that is 100% stock without root.

Nevermind, I know how to do it.

[Q] Trying to understand what changed in rooting/rom flashing steps

Hello everyone
I just got a I9505, and I'm coming from the first Note. Before I had rooted my Note only once, I dont remember how I got Custom Recovery (CWM) into the phone, but I used it for every rom flash, I have never used Odin before.
So far What I have seen here is that the guide for flashing appears to not include Custom Recovery (CWM I guess, there appears to be one other variation now), but in every ROM thread all I see are download links to flash with odin, looks like nobody is using CWM to flash roms anymore.
The main advantage of CWM is that for me it appeared to be safer (My friend who likes to use Odin he has difficulties flashing most of the time), and it does not increase the counter.
Also, I'm not sure if to obtain ROOT I can just flash a pre-rooted rom from Odin while not being rooted. Does it work?
Thanks in advance

We use CWM to Flash only Custom ROMs/Kernels.
We use ODIN to flash Stock ROMs/Kernels.
The easiest way to have Root and CWM is HERE
Or you can Flash a Pre-rooted Stock ROM
Good luck

Stock recovery s4 (gti9515)

Hey
Since I don't know how to make a backup of the stock recovery without root or custom recovery, I want to ask if anyone already has a backup of the stock recovery and want to share it. Or if you know a site where I can download it, you can mention that too. It's just that the gt i9515 isn't that populair.
Thanks
If you want the stock recovery back, then just flash the stock rom. No point in backing it up.
I thought the recovery isn't a part of the rom. Am I right?
Does anyone know where I can get it?

Easiest way to install custom ROMs to GS4? (i337)

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 i337 with the oc4 bootloader running android 5.0.1. I'm seeking help on how to flash a custom ROM onto this device. It seems that it's very difficult to install a custom recovery onto the device, as it has a locked bootloader.
I've been reading up here on XDA and it seems the only possible way to do anything is to root it, but the only method I've used in the past to root phones was simply flashing root.zip in a custom recovery. I have seen a program called KingRoot that is apparently able to root the device on 5.0.1, however, I do not have much confirmation and it seems a slight bit sketchy. Even after rooting, I'm not sure of whether or not I'd be able to install a custom recovery and a custom rom from there.
The other thing I have seen is Safestrap. However, I do not know if it works with the oc4 bootloader. I have read this guide on XDA titled "Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Safestrap Guide" however, it doesn't really tell me the process of installing Safestrap onto a 5.0.1 device. If I "odin back to stock" to an earlier version of android, will I be able to then root and install custom recovery or Safestrap more easily? Link:

TL;DR: what's the easiest way to install custom ROMs onto the i337 Galaxy S4 running Android 5.0.1 with the oc4 bootloader?
I wouldn't reallly recommend kingroot.
And rooting your phone does not allow you to install a custom recovery. In fact, those are two different things which are non-dependent of each other.
To install a custom recovery and rom you will probably need to unlock the bootloader. Something about loki patching it.

Use i9506 ROMs for i9508v

They are both snapdragon 800 device, but 9508v is the China mobile 4g version(with unlock boot loader). How can I use 9506 ROMs for 9508v?If I simply flash it should end in bootlooping or no signal or no lte connection? What can I do to let it work perfectly?
You don't. Odin will refuse to install a ROM not meant for the device, even if the ROM you're using is from Samsung. So there's no way to put an I9506 ROM on the I9508. Your only alternative is a custom ROM.
Oops it's my fault,I didn't describe it clearly?
Actually what I mean is a custom rom(flashable zip in recovery),how about that?
One more thing,it's i9508v rather than i9508?
A custom ROM should work, but you likely will encounter issues with the kernel. If there is a custom kernel for your device you'll need to flash it after flashing the ROM. Otherwise the device won't work correctly, if at all.

ok, I have a question about the i9508v, I couldn't find a custom rom or recovery, if, say, the i9506 has a custom rom and recovery, it will work with the corresponding ones, won't there be a boot loop or a brick?
@predator1222 Kudos. You actually used the search engine to find a relevant thread! Most don't.
To answer your question, the recovery includes the drivers for the hardware as part of its makeup. This is why there is no generic recovery that works for all devices. So, while you could install the 9506 recovery, chances are good you'll not be able to use it.
You would have a similar issue with the ROM itself, as the kernel and binaries are designed for a specific device. It would bootloop, though Odin should allow you to recover by installing a stock ROM.
and if I try to flash the factory ROM to the i9506 with Odin? would odin load it or throw an error or would it end in a boot loop?

Possible to revert to stock recovery?

Hi,
I am currently trying to get into Andriod Development. I have an old Note 4 that I can play with and want to try some things. Haven't done so yet.
So, I understood that it is necessary to move to a custom recovery to be able to root the phone or to flash custom ROMs. I think I also understood to go back to the stock ROM.
However, an information I haven't found yet is: If I flash a custom Recovery, e.g. CWM or TWRP, is it possible to revert to the stock recovery in any way?
thanks in advance.
