Use i9506 ROMs for i9508v - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

They are both snapdragon 800 device, but 9508v is the China mobile 4g version(with unlock boot loader). How can I use 9506 ROMs for 9508v?If I simply flash it should end in bootlooping or no signal or no lte connection? What can I do to let it work perfectly?

You don't. Odin will refuse to install a ROM not meant for the device, even if the ROM you're using is from Samsung. So there's no way to put an I9506 ROM on the I9508. Your only alternative is a custom ROM.

Oops it's my fault,I didn't describe it clearly?
Actually what I mean is a custom rom(flashable zip in recovery),how about that?
One more thing,it's i9508v rather than i9508?

A custom ROM should work, but you likely will encounter issues with the kernel. If there is a custom kernel for your device you'll need to flash it after flashing the ROM. Otherwise the device won't work correctly, if at all.

ok, I have a question about the i9508v, I couldn't find a custom rom or recovery, if, say, the i9506 has a custom rom and recovery, it will work with the corresponding ones, won't there be a boot loop or a brick?

@predator1222 Kudos. You actually used the search engine to find a relevant thread! Most don't.
To answer your question, the recovery includes the drivers for the hardware as part of its makeup. This is why there is no generic recovery that works for all devices. So, while you could install the 9506 recovery, chances are good you'll not be able to use it.
You would have a similar issue with the ROM itself, as the kernel and binaries are designed for a specific device. It would bootloop, though Odin should allow you to recover by installing a stock ROM.

and if I try to flash the factory ROM to the i9506 with Odin? would odin load it or throw an error or would it end in a boot loop?

[Q] Trying to understand what changed in rooting/rom flashing steps

Hello everyone
I just got a I9505, and I'm coming from the first Note. Before I had rooted my Note only once, I dont remember how I got Custom Recovery (CWM) into the phone, but I used it for every rom flash, I have never used Odin before.
So far What I have seen here is that the guide for flashing appears to not include Custom Recovery (CWM I guess, there appears to be one other variation now), but in every ROM thread all I see are download links to flash with odin, looks like nobody is using CWM to flash roms anymore.
The main advantage of CWM is that for me it appeared to be safer (My friend who likes to use Odin he has difficulties flashing most of the time), and it does not increase the counter.
Also, I'm not sure if to obtain ROOT I can just flash a pre-rooted rom from Odin while not being rooted. Does it work?
Thanks in advance

We use CWM to Flash only Custom ROMs/Kernels.
We use ODIN to flash Stock ROMs/Kernels.
The easiest way to have Root and CWM is HERE
Or you can Flash a Pre-rooted Stock ROM
Good luck

Unable to flash any non-stock ROM on 910F

Hello everybody,
I run into a strange problem with my 910F (never had this problem before with other smartphones).
Any non-stock thing I try to flash (custom recovery, ROMs like Evolution, Ketan, CM, BattleHero, SimpleROM, etc.) lead to a boot-loop.
It simply refuses to boot.
The only way to recover it is to flash from Odin N910FXXU1BOC5_N910FPHE1BOD1_N910FXXU1BOC4_HOME.tar.md5 ROM.
Then it boots, upgrades to Marshmallow, but it's a pure Samsung ROM with lots of bloatware and no root.
Attempt to flash root (like UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip) from recovery mode also fails.
Any idea what could be?
Thanks!

That sounds strange. With all other Samsung smartphones I had there were no problems to reflash them.
And, I finally installed Philz custom recovery and yes, it permits to flash any ROM, but - the same boot loop problem
You have to flash appropriate bootloader/modem though Odin first, also try to use TWRP recovery.
and which bootloader/modem would you recommend?
I flashed several ones and still had the bootloop problem.

Flashing LineageOS ROM to Galaxy S4 GT-i9505

Hi everyone,
so it's been a while that I'm thinking about flashing the LineageOS 14.1 to my Galaxy S4 i9505
so I've got few questions because I'm still hesitating if I should do it or not.
Are the LineageOS builds stable? I saw "nightly" written in the download page, and I'm not sure if it means if the build's stable or not.
if I'll do it, which ROM build shall I use? (a download link would be great if available)
and are there any risks known to flashing it with a LineageOS ROM?
Thanks
What does stable mean by your definition?
There is always a risk when flashing software to any phone; you just have to be prepared for the possibility of a bricked phone.

well I mean something with minimum of bugs, that's working just fine with no big or critical know issues, like IMEI problems, o camera or wifi...

so is there a build that you eventually, or any other members reading this post have installed on their i9505 and working good?
and in case of bricked phone, is it possible to restore the custom ROM, from the backup that's done with the TWRP recovery?
Sometimes, when a phone is severely bricked, it can only be revived using a separate piece of hardware such as an octopus box.
If you don't have TWRP on the phone, do this:
make sure the phone is running the latest bootloader and ROM;
download laest tar versionTWRP for the i9505 from here: https://dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/
download Odin 3.07 from here: https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=...ntid=1168421&usg=AOvVaw0aq_x8M8nbsqDFAFe9tFoy
open Odin, put TWRP into the PDA box, uncheck eveything except f reset time;
connect the phone to the computer in download mode and flash the phone;
when you see the word "reset" in Odin's status window, disconnect the USB cable from the phone, remove the battery, replace the battery, boot into recovery using the button combination.
If everything went fine, the phone should be running TWRP.
With TWRP on the phone you can backup your existing ROM, flash custom ROMs, and backup all of the phone's important partitions, including the efs folder.
Things that should not be done:
never flash a custom bootloader;
never flash any ROM or kernel not specficically designed for your phone; and
be prepared for disaster and the possibility you will ruin the phone.
Everyone's needs are different so I suggest flashing different ROMs to get use to the idea of flashing.
Depending on the severity of the brick, TWRP can be used to revive the phone. Odin with a stock ROM would be better IMHO.

thank you your answer gave me the TWRP recovery install process.
but in my original question, shall I flash a "nightly" build ROM to my phone? I want to upgrade to nougat with LineageOS 14.1 but not sure if it is safe to falsh a nightly build?
Nightlies can be very unstable. The rc releases would be more stable. Regardless of whether it is rc or nightly, they can be stable or unstable depending on how the phone and which apps are used.

Upgrading to 6.0 on I337

I have been trying to upgrade my 4.4.2 s4 I337 to 6.0 marshmellow and am having many problems. Also I am EXTREMELY new to anything android or flashing or anything like this at all, I learned everything I know just today.
I rooted my phone using the towelroot method because it was the easiest for my phone. I am also using safestrap recovery because I think my phone is bootloader locked? I was having a lot of problems trying to install twrp so I just assumed it was that. I'm using usb debugging and I am using the 6.0 pico gapps.
I have tried multiple roms using safestrap and making sure that the rom is specifically for my phone, at&t and I337 but each time the rom shows it was successful and I reboot it goes to recovery booting and says I don't have an OS and I have to recover back to stock firmware using odin, beccause I did a full wipe before each install of the roms.
If there is any other info I might have missed or have anything to help me I would greatly appreciated it, and again I basically have no idea what I am doing and am just going off of trial and error and googling what every term means. Thank you
Edit: My bootloader is NB1 if that matters also.
Edit: Doing a little more searching is it even possible for me to get 6.0 with my phone?
The bootloader on your phone is locked and cannot run any custom ROMs unless it is a rom that is based on a stock Samsung ROM; therefore, a 6.0 ROM or higher is not possible. Also, Lineage, RR, etc. is not possible.

Thank you for the reply! After a lot more researching and doing very stupid stuff (it was all for fun and learning mostly anyway) I did brick my phone saying firmware upgrade encountered an issue I can only get to download mode I tried flashing the original firmware I had using the stock 4.4 nb1 file but that is also now failing in odin, do you have any suggestions that could work?
Edit: I tried flashing to mk2 and thats how it bricked, but shouldn't I be able to go back to my stock firmware even if I bricked my phone like this? Both the towelrootable stock nb1 4.4 and the normal stock nb1 4.4 isnt working when I try to flash them in odin
You should flash the same or newer ROM to the phone. Even though the phone says it encountered an error, you can still flash the phone with Odin with this message in the screen.
Hopefully, this thread will help: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/guide-odin-to-stock-updating-rooting-t2926642

I'm probably jinxing it by typing while its still working but I switched my usb cable and so far it hasn't failed when before it would fail immediatly, thank you for all the help!
Only the MDL bootloader can run non touchwiz ROMs. All other bootloaders can only run touch wiz based ROMs.

Possible to revert to stock recovery?

Hi,
I am currently trying to get into Andriod Development. I have an old Note 4 that I can play with and want to try some things. Haven't done so yet.
So, I understood that it is necessary to move to a custom recovery to be able to root the phone or to flash custom ROMs. I think I also understood to go back to the stock ROM.
However, an information I haven't found yet is: If I flash a custom Recovery, e.g. CWM or TWRP, is it possible to revert to the stock recovery in any way?
thanks in advance.

Yes, you flash via Odin the firmware for your phone model - https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Yes, you can use the repair 4 files firmware for your phone model (example here is 910C) - https://firmware.gem-flash.com/index.php?a=browse&b=category&id=1268
Yes, use Samsung Smart Switch for PC - like here
