WiFi Tether 4.4.4 - Requires Root - Droid Ultra General

This is for anyone who has root on 4.4.4 but also has write protection enabled. (Used SuperSU to keep root through the update).
This app will allow you to enable the native WiFi tether without modifying the system (Which we can't do anyways). I have been using this for about an hour with no issues.
Finally, I didn't make this, I'm just someone who's stuck between places and need WiFi tethering for my job and hate spending money. Use at your own risk of course.

Yeah, I think this is how Topsnake's exploit works.

Its the same thing as the exploit I released in the dev section. Nice repost

Yeah i just made the connection now. Forgot not everyone has unlocked BLs. In theory, if the app can make the change, you can too.
The app literally applies the same exact exploit as the one I've already released.

No it does not, it runs a command after the phone is booted that while requiring root to run does not make any actually changes to the system.
Again, I have a 1 for write protection (meaning its enabled) and SuperSU basically stuck in System and have no issues running the app, making WiFi hot spots, and having devices connected to it.
Make sure you have root survival set up as well, I'm not sure if the update would remove root without it but I don't think you would want to take that chance.

I dont know if anybody found that before but Im able to tether wifi without doing anything [emoji1], of course Im using my phone outside US with a gsm carrier.

I attempted this exploit by you TopSnake ( http://bit.ly/1zz1JOE) and after rebooting my build.prop was deleted and all renamed files were restored to their original state. Was there another exploit you were talking about? This was the only one I could find in the dev section for the latest update.
I do know that you can run a simple command to do what this app does but this app can run on boot up which saves some time.

The OP stated he was write protected, so he can't copy the build.prop over the stock one. My app doesn't write to the system it runs the /system/bin/setprop command to set the property. The build.prop sets the property on boot but after the phone has booted the build.prop is never read again. So replacing it on write protected devices won't work.

[Q] Will bootloader unlock be permanent?

I am very happy and relieved that we will be getting a bootloader unlock. Im curious whether it is permanent or if it will be broken if say I decide to return to stock for whatever reason. Thanks. Iv read through most of the posts about it and still not sure
I would guess the stock images we get, when we do get them, will include the original bootloader. So, if you returned to stock for any reason I would assume you could simply use the same exploit to take control once again. Not sure about the idea of critical update ota's sent by carriers though.

Keep in mind that the Snapdragon 600 uses Qfuses, therefore any older/compromised version of the bootloader can be permanantly revoked through a software update (and won't ever run again on your phone if they do). Something to be careful of if you ever think of updating.
Only way to update safely will be to flash a updated ROM that a dev releases here after he mods it to be safe to run and keep the unlocked bootloader

So I posted a thread here asking for help (the phone was functional at this point) and one user suggested a root method to try out in the comments there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2379833

Ouch. Your WiFi is broken because he told you to flash a US VZW (XT-907) firmware.
Okay. First, you should try to find a 201M restore file. That will get your WiFi back. Next, since you've got a Dev edition, you can bootloader unlock and install a custom recovery, then flash a root zip
EDIT: Found it

While the link I gave him was unidentified as to warnings to non vzw users (now fixed) , the flashing of vzw sw comes in step 8 clearly he would have had to have pulled it from a xml himself if he even got that far. And if he did it would have been from reading the rzr op. As the bare motochopper has no vzw sw inside.

I didn't get the system img at all. I just wanted to flash the superuser files to /data which I thought would set me up to flash the whole thing with Rom manager.
Anyway, thank you for the help. I am downloading the firmware you linked to now. This guide tells me to edit the XML file and remove the getvar text from it, should this apply here as well? (Edit: Cant post outside links, but I think you get my point)
I'm going to use RSD 6.1.4 to restore the firmware. Any further instructions would be appreciated as I have never done this before.

Please fill in some details for others?
How do you have a path to the newer sw? Is it your carriers ota? If you can obtain the same in the xml form there is an easy root using a modded ver w/ unlocked phone. The ota.zip could also be useful if you take it while you have root. It resides in /cache.
Thank you

It wasn't your fault for trying to help, so it's ok. I'm glad a solution existed.
I'm more than willing to answer the questions, but I am a layman here so please explain some things for me: What do you mean by SW? I just installed the update by going into about phone -> system update on Wifi. The carriers here don't even support 3G, much less 4G (So now you know why Wifi was important for me).
The phone came unlocked day one when I bought it from a friend's friend. I don't know if he did it that way or if it comes unlocked because it is the developer edition.
I installed CW Recovery using Fastboot. I installed the incorrect superuser file using Motofail which wrote the superuser file but failed at all other steps. I was then unable to either access or remove this superuser apk file.
Since I am back on 4.0.4. now, what's the easy way to get root access and superuser permissions that you mention? I wish other XT902 owners would post here too, generating interest would really help in getting development support for this phone.

Once you root on 404 you can grab your update.zip & copy it to your sd . Any rooting exploit would evolve from that Or the newest xml ver of the 404 you just flashed from rsd. You may be able to request it from your carrier.
---------- Post added at 01:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 PM ----------
You can paste the mods from my vzw restore (no vzw software will be used) into the 404 xml & obtain root from a preinstalled cwmr! Then maintain root with voodoo for your ota.
I will help you just read the op. Link is in my signature.

Devs @ XDA, come on champs gave us something, so can we also enjoy the privilege of CM12. Many are waiting for it fingers crossed
Mods/all, its only a humble request to Dev & not that if being annoyed.
Qualcomm patched the second layer (sbl2) of the second-stage bootloader, to take care of possible exploitation, effectively making it impenetrable. So for some individuals, we're pretty much out of luck. I wouldn't be sure of the possible exploits (the problem is, after that patch, it makes it even harder, although not impossible). Previous Kit Kat rooting exploitation relies on the permission requestion layer (futex) of the Linux kernel, as discovered by the former PS3 hacker, GeoHot, while it's patched by now. It's possible there is already a new rooting exploit by now, just don't hold the breath.

Can you please be more concretely?
I may not be up to date, been out of town for a bit, and figuring out a way to unbrick a few RAZR Ms.
However, the reason I said not to hold the breath is because of Verizon demanding a hard fix for rooting so that way almost any root exploits simply fail on arrival. This phone company also WANTS locked BIOS so no one can install custom recovery and OS "just because it put customer services in jeopardy".
That's really bad, can't believe that there is no chance to root or bootunlock this device.
By the way, do you know any way to disable/delete/freeze modem fast dormancy service without rooting phone? Or to made some changes in build.prop file?
Simply force close Modem fastdormancy first then disable it in app manager, it will then quit. And, editing build.prop requires root (write protection).
Force close works but disable button is inactive.
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
Ah, right.... I wonder why Verizon would disable some app manager features.
I'm outside of us, my carrier operates in gsm network and does not support fast dormancy, therefore phone reboots and can't wake up on power button when using h+. Thats why I need to edit build.prop and to dothis I need root access to file system.
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
Makes sense. However, I may look for new exploit, but since Futex is removed, it is not so simple.
Dr. Mario, are you developer?

Not officially, yet. But I know how the software works underneath the pretty UI, even down to the machine codes. I have been modding Android for 3 years.

[FAQ][ROOT]Answers to Questions about Root

All Your Root Questions Answered:
This thread is a work in progress. Ask your root questions, and I'll answer them in the OP. This way we can clean up the other thread.
Thank you @DmdStar, @somberfox, @CrashXXL, and everyone else I missed (which I will add to the OP)
Q: I followed all the directions and after I finished the root procedure, my device is stuck at the M logo? HALP.
A: You didn't follow all the directions, and now you're going to have to start over from step one. Flash SU6-7 in RSD Lite as mentioned in the directions, and follow the directions word-for-word. You're only wasting your own time, not ours.
Q: My phone is stuck at the black green and the root script isn't detecting my phone?
A: You're probably using a USB3.0 port which isn't supported. Move your phone to a USB2.0 port and install the Qualcomm drivers provided in the download.
Q: Why is it taking so long, I think it froze.
A: Just leave your phone alone and get a coffee. Make that three. It's a long process.
Q: Can I install blah-blah ROM?
A: NO! While this is a perma-root, you are unable to disable write-protection, therefore you can't use Safestrap.
Q: Now that I'm rooted, can I unlock my bootloader?
A: SU4-21 was the last system update that worked with Sunshine. Unless you can get in contact with the Chinese middleman, you're out of luck. Sorry.
Q: Why won't my changes to /system persist after a reboot?
A: Unfortunately, no one has managed to circumvent write protection on the device, therefore you can't do anything to /system and expect it to persist unless you do soft-reboots. Sorry.
Q: Can I delete system apps?
A: No, unless you edit the system.mbn and split it into 16mb chunk files. There's no way around this, sorry.
Q: Can I install your Busybox image?
A: I mean if you want a brick, go right ahead. No one's stopping you.
Q: Viper4Android?
A: Which needs Busybox. Again, feel free to proceed at your own risk.
Q: Can I downgrade to SU6-7 if I took the upgrade to SU6-7.2?
A: Yes, you can. There's no magic trick to downgrading to SU6-7, just flash it in RSD Lite.
Q: Can i have only root with SU6-7 and locked bootloader?
A: You can not unlock your bootloader past SU4-21.
Q: Wait, if we can downgrade to SU6-7, why not just downgrade to SU4-21 and unlock our bootloaders?
A: Because you can't. Debating about it on the forums won't magically make it work neither. Nor will complaining about Motorola locking down the devices. You bought an on-contract device that you knew was going to be locked and stock. They also had a developer edition MAXX for sale. If you didn't get it, blame yourself, not Motorola/Verizon.
Q: Can we take the OTA update without losing root?
A: Yes, but you will lose Xposed if you do.(Answered by @DmdStar)
Thanks for the faq @thenameisnigel

yeah thx
Nice one ! Thanks for Viper4Android information. What preset did you choose (battery saving, high/super quality) ?
Actually I don't see what stops you from deleting an app, although it's faster "frozing" it via Titanium for example (paid solution). I removed some files successfully (I should try with apps). Also, did you try installing another ROM ? I didn't take the time to try it but it might work with the python script. You just would have to replace almost all memory blocks, which would take 16+ hours (!!).
I've another question : did someone succeed in installing CF.Lumen ?
Thanks again for the faq

Only if you put it in the image before you flash it to the phone it seems, if you do it afterwards it does not persist.
another question

Didnt try it myself but from what ive gathered if you used the crashxxl method you will not loose root if you take the su6-7.2 OTA update.

Dude why are you telling people to take the update when we already know that it'll break Xposed? If you're not here to help, don't post. Simple as that.

i don t tell anyone to update the Droid maxx.
are you referring to losing functionality of a baked in exposed? I am running the crash exploit, with non-baked exposed, on SU6-7.2

Let's talk write protection!

Ok, so I'm making this thread to talk about and throw ideas around disabling wp. Figure it's only right since people are getting mixed up with wanting root when its already obtained. Our only problem now is write protection.. So what do you guys think? How can we beat this?

I tried king root last Saterday. From my test it didn't function like root. My guess is no system files were changed. In order to change the system files you have to reboot.

This is over my head but........
The DE Note 4 has a aboot partition that has to be cracked to get root.
i tried to use multi window pro to open four windows. It requires a reboot for the changes to take place. I will try again later with simplereboot/soft-boot, Thanks
It worked

I was able to use multi window pro.
I kept root after a soft reboot.

Temp root IS root only it's temporary.
AND... The app is/was called Multiwindow Plus I think it came from the same Author. I forgot where I got it last year for my DE Note 4, maybe the play store but it 's not there now.

Also if you read the topic, it's about disabling write protection...
We already kno we have root, it's just we need to find away to get around the dm-verity function that rolls back changes to the system partition.

YES it use to be free but I paid for mine. I don't know where to get it now. It requires root. And it stopped working after the phone did a reboot on it's own.

I have two examples first the commad line change that makes Chrome always open as a desktop . After Kingroot I was able to use root browser to write to the location data/local and it stuck after a hard reboot.
Second example I was able to get the app *App Backup and Restore* to write to the Ext SD Card. This example did not stick after a reboot.
