I've got a little issue, Ive put a few mp3's on the root of the sdcard in a folder called "Music" but the Music app says there isnt any music.
Ive tried a bunch of things
/audio
/Audio
/music
/ *basically on root*
/Music
/dcim/audio
/dcim/Audio
/dcim/Music
/dcim/music
/android/Music
/android/Audio
^ all the directories ive tried. I'm on CM5.0.8
My phone defaulted it to "My Music", so try that.
Use a file browser (like Astro or any other).
Then go to that folder and double click an mp3, Can't remember if it asks you what to use to open if or if it just opens it.
Then the music app will know the folder and the rest of your music will be listed.
If that rom comes with Dev tools(app)
-Open it
-click media scanner
make sure your songs are mp3 or aac(?)
your phone has to rescan for media. i ended up turning my phone off then back on until i rooted and changed to a good rom. it doesnt automatically scan your phone as this would drain the battery.
It worked thanks guys! It actually picked it up in android/music but I moved it back to root. Lol media player lists doubles for everything now but I'm happy it worked.

With Quickpic we have the option to hide pictures or folders that contains pictures and keeps them from being seen in Quickpic or other apps like the stock Gallery app.
My Questions is,
Is there such an app that does that but for music files?
For example:
I have a collection of Gospel music but I only play it using the Stock Music app. I play all my other music using Ubermusic and I would like to 'hide' or not let Ubermusic detect my Gospel music.
Another example:
I have this app called G Music Lite which downloads songs and streams it with lyrics. Only problem is, when I run its media scan, it detects ALL music files found in the device & microsd card, which means that even sound effects of games gets detected and easily gets mixed up with songs. I would like to somehow 'hide' or exclude this type of files from being detected by my music players.
Know any good app that can accomplish this?

I haven't used Ubermusic but some apps will let you select specific folders for your library, like PowerAmp, if that helps.
For the other question, use the stock file browser to navigate to the folder with the problem files > Menu > "Exclude from media scan". It will affect any subfolders within that folder too.
Hi,
I cannot find this through the search function on this Nexus 4 forum, although it is very weird.
I have downloaded (with my browser) several MP3 music files (from the web and from my own dropbox) to my Nexus 4 phone.
I can play them by clicking them from a file manager and choosing Google music player to complete the action.
But ... they do not show up in the Google music player. Neither do they show up in a few other music players I have installed (and removed again).
There are two exceptions:
- All music files do show up in the built in music player of the ES File Manager.
- I have set one downloaded MP3 as the standard ringtone on my phone. That file shows up in any music player.
What do I do wrong? Why does a downloaded MP3 not show up in a music player, unless I set it as my standard ringtone?
I live in a country where the Google Play Music store is not supported. But the ringtone-mp3 does not come from there!
Did you move the songs to your music folder?

Make sure there isn't a .nomedia file in that folder

But one thing that i thought was very weird was that, if i added an other song, it would show up...

That is right! Just after I added them, I could see them! Very weird.
And yes, I moved them to the Music folder, but the ringtone I use (also a downloaded mp3) is still in the downlosd folder, and I can nevertheless see it.
A ".nomedia" file is hidden. You would need to have show hidden files enabled to see it.
[SOLVED] Use MTP from your Pc / laptop
Well, the problem has solved itself for me in the following way:
I am an Ubuntu user, and I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04 yesterday evening.
Ubuntu (Lubuntu, Kubuntu etc.) 13.04 supports the MPT protocol Google wants us to use with our Nexus 4 'out of the box'.
I have read that Windows should do so too, but I cannot check that.
You connect your Nexus 4 to your PC or laptop and choose MTP (Media Tranfer Protocol) as the protocol to transfer files (I believe your phone chooses the other protocol by default). You do this from the notification area (where your notifications for new mail and app updates also appear).
Then you can copy music files from your PC / laptop to your phone to any directory in your phone. I suggest the Music directory. And, surprise, surprise, if you do it that way, the music files also appear in your Google Music Player!
The strange thing is, however, that you cannot transfer music files from your phone to your PC. It is a one-direction traffic. You also cannot delete files on your phone from your connected PC.
So if you want to make the invisible files on your phone visible in your Google music player, you have to delete them on the phone (from a file manager on the phone). I would copy them to Dropbox first, however. Then get them on your pc / laptop (by downloading them from Dropbox e.g.) and then copy them through the USB cable from you pc / laptop back to your phone. Strange, but that is how it works!
Do I understand this strange procedure? No, but it works. Enjoy!

Negative! For me, using Windows 8 Pro x64. It works just fine using MTP, the only problem I am having is making folders. Then Windows Explorer crashes.
On Linux on my laptop (Linux Mint 14), i use ADB, which works just fine.
I only have this problem with two mixes from Never Say Die Records. But other songs works just fine...

I installed a (usenet) nzb app and downloaded a nice music album containing MP3s. They were stored in a folder on the internal storage called Downloads, and I moved the folder containing the music files to a folder called Music (also on the internal storage).
I now opened the stock Music app to play the newly downloaded album. Alas, that album was not found.
I tried the stock app Play Music, but the same thing. My highly anticipated nice MP3s were not in there.
So my question is: what the hell do I do wrong?
Need I to reboot the phone so it might rescan the files on the internal storage?
Need I to put my music folder somewhere else?
My wish is just to play some nice music with the stock Music app.

Setting > Apps > Music play
then clear cache
clear data
then Force Stop
now try music player.
(and also check this; go to ur file manager and select a music track to play, if u get problem with playing of music then try to find stock music player app OR flash another *Stock* rom (from sammobile.com)
Also check How u transfer music to ur phone
buy from play.store
via usb cable
WiFi or ...

download media scan from play store and do a scan.

Hi,
Silly question.
After you downloaded from usenet,did you unzip the album?
I make a folder called MUSIC , and put it on my sd card.
All music apps find it without issue.

I searched the play store and found an app called Rescan Media. This did the trick! After the background scan, my music files were found in both the stock Music and stock Google Play Music apps.

The only thing that work for my (No media scanner) is VNC player.
In my stock music app and in Google play music app I can only see 10 song out of 1700.

After days of trying to get a decent solution out of the Sony support guys, I gave up and turned to the only place I know I'll probably find my anwser!
So here's the scenario: I've recently purchased a Z2 (yesterday) and immediately started syncing my music up with the provided application which is Media Go. The unfortunate thing is, that my music refuses to show up in the WALKMAN app. I've looked up some probable solutions on the web such as clearing the data and cache of the WALKMAN app, restarting the phone several times, doing a factory reset, but I ran into a dead end every time. I've also heard that the WALKMAN app cannot recognize music which are in the external storage, but that's not the case here since I dont have an SD card inserted at the moment. I've also read that the app cannot recognize music without proper ID3 tags, but I don't think thats the case here since every music player, even Media Go, can recognize every single mp3 I have on my PC.
Anyone else Xperienced (pun intended) this problem and found a solution?

First thing: The Z2 does recognizes Music in the external storage. From Kitkat and beyond, that's almost the exclusive use for it, without root.
Second: does other players recognizes songs? Download one of the most used, are your choice, and see if they find it.
Third: Seems obvious, but everyone forgers, sometimes, the most obvious stuff. Use a file manager, on the phone (there should be one called File Commander built in), and check the Music folder to see if your media files are there.
Forth: Use the file manager in Windows, and transfer a few music files to the Music folder. Reboot the phone, wait a few minutes (just to make sure), and check if the music is now on Walkman...

The good thing about android is that you can just copy and paste the files onto your phone storage without using a syncing app.
Have you tried copying one of the music files onto your storage straight away into a new folder you create? (the name of the folder doesn't matter at all)
In addition, check the folder with your music files. (The one music go created) Chances are...there is a file in it called '.nomedia'. It's usually a hidden file, so make sure you select 'show hidden files' when you use a file management app. (I recommend Es file Explorer. You can find it on google play store, but others are fine too as long as you get to see hidden files) The file is there to stop media files in the folder from being recognised.
P.S the phone does recognise media files on external storage. That's the whole point of having one really.

First, the music is located in the internal storage. It's in the root/Music folder. The structure looks like /Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS
Tried what you suggested and strangely , none of the downloaded music players recognize any kind of music on my phone!
Also tried manually copying files (by following the "/Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS" and by simply copying individual files into the /Music/ folder) but still refuses to recognize my music.
Have you tried creating a NEW folder and put some music files into it?

The other guy pointed some important information. Kudos to him
Try using a more powerful file explorer (the recommended ES File Explorer is a good one. You can try Solid Explorer too, if you like it better) and do a search on the whole storage (remember to activate the Show Hidden files/folders) for .nomedia files.
PS: That isn't the root of the storage, in theory. From a user standpoint, it is, but technically there are a few other folders before you reach the actual root.

Tried creating a folder of my own and putting some music files into it, but nothing sadly, I've checked for a .nomedia file in the /Music/ folder but i dont see anything in there. However, there is a .nomedia file in the root of the internal memory. Maybe that's the root of my problem?

Most likely yes. Delete it and it should work. I wonder why that file was there in the first place...

Wooah wait there...Z2 has always been reading the music from SD card how can you say that it doesnot...?
I dont think the native music player has any problem reading it from the SD card...even though KK 4.4 has restrictions
Also throw the music file anywhere in the phone either internal or external inside any folder it recognises automatically unless the database is corrupt...

My bad...
What version is Walkman? The version that came with my phone wouldn't load up my music either but once I updated it worked as expected.

My Z2 sees all the music, I have the MUSIC folder created on my SD Card.
The only explorer which can do it is File Commander.
Jumping in on this thread....
I use to play my music unlimited through the Walkman, but all of a sudden it seems to have stopped doing so when I try to log back in it doesn't allow me to do so, I click on music unlimited within the Walkman it loads up the screen to login but neither the "login" button or "create account" button will do anything if I click on them they make the tap sound which is registering that they are being clicked but nothing else, the other two links on the page will open ( Learn more and Terms and conditions )
I've tried removing both apps, clearing all the data and reloading everything back on but it's still the same, anyone got any ideas.
Walkman plays my 70gb library on my sdcard1 just fine...
I use Google play music and Walkman does not see my music.

Oh yeah, that's cause Google play music downloads your music to the device and stores it in some cryptic way. I forgot about that.
But, if you put your music on your phone yourself via pc, EVERY music player will be able to see it.

Google music sucks. It will only let you download the music and it's stored in some secret way. I use amazon mp3 at least you can actually put the files on your added card. Shame on Google.
