Music

When I connect my via USB cable to my home PC it let's me sync music to my phone but the albums don't show up in the music player on the phone, instead they're put into my Astro file manager app. Now is this because the music I ripped from CD to my PC are reading it as a WMA file and how can I correct this cause the Amazon MP3 app store doesn't have some of the albums I'm trying to load to my phone. Music Player (default one) show your mp3's using ID3 tags not folders. If you put in diferent folders, it doesn't change anything. If your firles have wrong ID3 tag entries, this couse a problem in showing it correctly. This is why some files cannot be sorted by albums, artists.
Try to use AIMP Advanced Tag Editor for Windows to fix/check files tags. Especialy try to fix ID3v2 tak, and copy (using special button) ID3v2 to ID3v1.

[Q} Ahem...No way to transfer my MKV files over USB???

Yeah...I tried to transfer my MKV files to my nexus 7 which is 100% stock and every time I drag and drop the MKV files over (Doesn't matter if I drag and drop 1 or 50) Windows explorer crashes. Anyone found a way to fix it from doing this...?

Is it over 4gb? I believe it's formatted as FAT32 and 4gb is the max file transfer.

No...they are all under 100 megabytes.

I should also note that I have to use MTP..because UMS isn't supported. But even if I try to sync them via windows media player it fails all the time.

Have you transferred other file types? This is most likely a stupid suggestion but maybe try renaming them first? Maybe it's something with the mkv extension or an illegal character in the file names. As I said, dumb suggestion, but once in a while those are the ones that work.

technically, it shouldn't be a problem. Did you checked whether JB supports MKV files? Or did you tried to transfer another type of file this big?
Try to upload a single MKV to Google Drive and download it to N7 and then play. If it works, then transferring should not be a problem.

I have it hosted on my local apache web server and I just browse to the webpage and tap on it and it loads right up and plays in MX player...However no matter what I do I CANNOT transfer the files to the nexus 7...

I just tried it out, copying a 720P MKV file from Windows 7 to the Nexus 7 over MTP. Worked fine for me.

Well no matter what I did it wouldn't work...I ended up putting the files in a .tar file and copying them over and extracting the archive...it worked then but its a HUGE pain in the ass.

Found a workaround:
Change Usb settings to PTP
1. Menu>Settings>Storage>Menu>USB Computer Settings
2. Tick Camera(PTP)
3. Transfer to Pictures folder
4. Using a file explorer of your choice on the device, transfer to final destination folder
5. ????
6. PROFIT!!!1!

I've successfully streamed mkv files to my N7 with Dropbox and using a local server and ES File Explorer. Haven't yet needed to transfer onto the limited flash of the N7 but I am sure that will happen for my next business trip so I will try it tonight to see if I have any issues with large files and smaller files.

I can't get mine to transfer. Even tried the picture folder trick. Of course I have the .wmv digital copies of movies I'd like to transfer. Going to try and convert them to mkv at least.
Aside from dropbox, would google drive work as well for streaming?

Very odd. I get a prompt saying my device might not be able to play the file but do I want to copy anyway. I just click the "do this for all" and say yes. You on Win 7?

I have both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 and have the same problem from my Windows 7 Home machine, but at work my Windows 7 Premium machine copies MKV files without a problem - on my home machine it crashes Windows Explorer every time...
There are several ways I've found to copy the files without converting them to MP4/AVI files first:
Dropbox, Google Drive, AirDroid - all of them treat the file as a "captured video", but at least AirDroid doesn't NEED Internet access, while the other 2 do
I'm not sure if it's a driver problem within Windows, but if I find any further methods I'll post here...

Do your PC has Dixv Plus codec installed? If so, uninstall it will fix the problem.
There is another thing that cause window explore crash, some of the mkv files don't have header compression removed when muxing.

Using Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on a laptop, no problems copying MKV files to a rooted Nexus 7 16GB running JB via USB. Even used ES File Explorer to copy, wirelessly, an MKV video file from the laptop to the Nexus 7. The video file (created with Handbrake from a ripped DVD) was 1.05GB. Screen captures of both the copying from Windows 7 and the file shown on the Nexus 7 attached.

I was trying to do something like this. I tested out Google Drive and Dropbox, but both seemed to have issues, one of which was the file transfer rate. TOOK FOREVER. What video player do you use to watch the mkv files?

Mine has a pop up, but there's no "copy anyway" option. Just "cancel" or "ok". Hitting okay just accepts the rejection message, it doesn't keep transfer.
It is Windows Home version though, so like the other post, this may be the issue.
My tablet isn't rooted yet either.

[Q] Manage Music Library?

I'm looking for a windows client that can manage my music. I don't want to have to manually deal with folder structure and drag/drop, etc.
I would LOVE something that could either:
- Piggy back off iTunes library OR import iTunes library
- Manage "smart playlists" - one of my favourite is having a playlist of my 500 most recently added songs, which I often play in order or shuffle.
A friend recommended DoubleTwist and I later learned it does not (yet?) work due to the Nexus 4 being MTP USB mode..

Double twist app works kinda like iTunes... App on CPU and phone enables it to sync through USB or wirelessly. I'm sure there are other ways

Use the google play music manager. You can upload all your music from your itunes with all your playlists. I did that and its good.

Not valid in Canada...

I used to use a Windows app called mdSync, which worked very well with my previous phone with an SD card. However, it seems that the mounting of the Nexus 4 storage doesn't work the same as a typical, "removable drive" as seen by Windows. So I suspect for this reason, traditional apps which detect connected external storage devices will have some trouble...

[Q] mp3 files skip

hey guys, i'm a super a noob...been on an iPhone 3gs for the last 2.5 years...:crying:
in any event, whenever i play an .mp3 it skips horribly. I've tried the stock music player & the ES file explorer media player.
I've tried dragging and dropping the file directly onto the lg from windows explorer as well as used the LG software to add music to my device?
any thoughts!? just got this today and pretty bummed by this at the moment.

okay, transferred a file via dropbox and it plays cleanly. So somehow the transfer of the file via the usb cable/pc caused the issue???

restarted, re-installed LG PC SUITE software and music playing cleanly that was transferred by that method.
Can also drag and drop into the Music folder now without issue. Don't know what it was, but I should have known Tech Support Rule #1 is restart and re-install. Thanks!!!

The WALKMAN app and music syncing

Hey xda!
After days of trying to get a decent solution out of the Sony support guys, I gave up and turned to the only place I know I'll probably find my anwser!
So here's the scenario: I've recently purchased a Z2 (yesterday) and immediately started syncing my music up with the provided application which is Media Go. The unfortunate thing is, that my music refuses to show up in the WALKMAN app. I've looked up some probable solutions on the web such as clearing the data and cache of the WALKMAN app, restarting the phone several times, doing a factory reset, but I ran into a dead end every time. I've also heard that the WALKMAN app cannot recognize music which are in the external storage, but that's not the case here since I dont have an SD card inserted at the moment. I've also read that the app cannot recognize music without proper ID3 tags, but I don't think thats the case here since every music player, even Media Go, can recognize every single mp3 I have on my PC.
Anyone else Xperienced (pun intended) this problem and found a solution?

First thing: The Z2 does recognizes Music in the external storage. From Kitkat and beyond, that's almost the exclusive use for it, without root.
Second: does other players recognizes songs? Download one of the most used, are your choice, and see if they find it.
Third: Seems obvious, but everyone forgers, sometimes, the most obvious stuff. Use a file manager, on the phone (there should be one called File Commander built in), and check the Music folder to see if your media files are there.
Forth: Use the file manager in Windows, and transfer a few music files to the Music folder. Reboot the phone, wait a few minutes (just to make sure), and check if the music is now on Walkman...

The good thing about android is that you can just copy and paste the files onto your phone storage without using a syncing app.
Have you tried copying one of the music files onto your storage straight away into a new folder you create? (the name of the folder doesn't matter at all)
In addition, check the folder with your music files. (The one music go created) Chances are...there is a file in it called '.nomedia'. It's usually a hidden file, so make sure you select 'show hidden files' when you use a file management app. (I recommend Es file Explorer. You can find it on google play store, but others are fine too as long as you get to see hidden files) The file is there to stop media files in the folder from being recognised.
P.S the phone does recognise media files on external storage. That's the whole point of having one really.

First, the music is located in the internal storage. It's in the root/Music folder. The structure looks like /Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS
Tried what you suggested and strangely , none of the downloaded music players recognize any kind of music on my phone!
Also tried manually copying files (by following the "/Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS" and by simply copying individual files into the /Music/ folder) but still refuses to recognize my music.

Have you tried creating a NEW folder and put some music files into it?

The other guy pointed some important information. Kudos to him
Try using a more powerful file explorer (the recommended ES File Explorer is a good one. You can try Solid Explorer too, if you like it better) and do a search on the whole storage (remember to activate the Show Hidden files/folders) for .nomedia files.
PS: That isn't the root of the storage, in theory. From a user standpoint, it is, but technically there are a few other folders before you reach the actual root.

Tried creating a folder of my own and putting some music files into it, but nothing sadly, I've checked for a .nomedia file in the /Music/ folder but i dont see anything in there. However, there is a .nomedia file in the root of the internal memory. Maybe that's the root of my problem?

Most likely yes. Delete it and it should work. I wonder why that file was there in the first place...

Thanks for the fast responses. The solution was indeed to delete that dreaded .nomedia file there... I too wonder why did Sony put there in the first place! Thanks again for your help!

Wooah wait there...Z2 has always been reading the music from SD card how can you say that it doesnot...?
I dont think the native music player has any problem reading it from the SD card...even though KK 4.4 has restrictions
Also throw the music file anywhere in the phone either internal or external inside any folder it recognises automatically unless the database is corrupt...

My bad...

What version is Walkman? The version that came with my phone wouldn't load up my music either but once I updated it worked as expected.

My Z2 sees all the music, I have the MUSIC folder created on my SD Card.
The only explorer which can do it is File Commander.

Jumping in on this thread....
I use to play my music unlimited through the Walkman, but all of a sudden it seems to have stopped doing so when I try to log back in it doesn't allow me to do so, I click on music unlimited within the Walkman it loads up the screen to login but neither the "login" button or "create account" button will do anything if I click on them they make the tap sound which is registering that they are being clicked but nothing else, the other two links on the page will open ( Learn more and Terms and conditions )
I've tried removing both apps, clearing all the data and reloading everything back on but it's still the same, anyone got any ideas.

Walkman plays my 70gb library on my sdcard1 just fine...

I use Google play music and Walkman does not see my music.

Oh yeah, that's cause Google play music downloads your music to the device and stores it in some cryptic way. I forgot about that.
But, if you put your music on your phone yourself via pc, EVERY music player will be able to see it.

Google music sucks. It will only let you download the music and it's stored in some secret way. I use amazon mp3 at least you can actually put the files on your added card. Shame on Google.
