Hi all, I'm an Admin from a large Sony Ericsson based forum and blog (www.se-nse.net) and we're currently expanding our horizons to cover Android a lot more.
I'm also an xda-developers user but clearly I don't post quite as much over here. I hope that this topic is acceptable though.
We're looking to get some Android developers about the place for both software development and technical knowledge on the forum if interested. se-nse is currently a great resource for modding of SE handsets and we hope to create a similar community for Android within the same site.
So if you know your Android stuff and are interested in joining our project please get in touch.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Mik
I'm holding my breath for some Android devs to work on both sites as well...
B/C I am holding my breath for the xperia! The SE US website lists the X10a for North America with ATT 3g bands. So, I'm hoping the X10 will be the first ATT Android device.
In which case I will definitely be getting one AND I WILL NEED MY ROOT!
I'll still keep my G1 for dev purposes! So, I won't be abandoning XDA!
Hey Mik,
I used to frequent the se-nse forum during the w800 days, I'd be most glad to assist you with your project if time permits, however do you need a modder, a native developer, a kernel hacker or a Java developer?
Regards,
Akshay
Well community wise we'll hopefully end up with all of those but specifically we're looking for a developer to build an Android app for se-nse.
I'm thinking something along the lines of a news reader for the blog and the ability to login, read PM's and change profile details from the phone. Setting a new avatar using the phones camera would be particularly nice I think.
Mik
Excellent, is it a group effort? Count me in, although if its just me working on it I dont know how much time I can dedicate to it until the 4th of December, I'm a bit busy till then, giving a talk at droidcon London.
Definitely a group effort as long as there are enough people wanting to be involved.
I'll happily lend ideas and do the testing but I know nothing about programming what so ever
Still looking for more developers to join the community and help out with our app development. Anyone who's interested please let me know or just head over to the forum topic linked in the first post
Mik
ahh se-ense.net. I remember that from when i used to mod my k750i.
Good times.
anyway, i'll probably start using both sites, as i'm planning on getting the X10 when it's released.
Maybe it'll need an audio hack, who knows

Devs looking for Glory - What's the story?

Am I the only one getting frustrated with some of he egos/personalities going on in this community? I remember when I was an XDA lurker, and the community was great. Everyone shared information for the greater good. It wasn't a site for people to just come and post requests, or ask silly questions without searching first. If I knew something, I contributed. Everyone was like that. Now it's almost as though people are looking for self glory instead of the community continuing to grow. It's very saddening to see. I just wish people would continue to share, and help everyone to be built up, rather than stand on a high podium and want to be praised.
Now I'm all for praising devs that help out, or anyone that helps out really. My problem is when people harvest information that could potentially be very beneficial to the community, simply because they want a name for themselves. Grow up. 15 minutes of fame online is really that critical in your life? Those who have been following the dev section should know what I'm talking about. I honestly love this phone, but the community nature of XDA is really lacking lately, especially here in the Desire HD/Inspire 4g fora. I'm praying it turns around soon, as a lot of the good devs may turn their backs for good on not just our section, but XDA as a whole.
I can relate to that! something has gone horribly wrong in here! I love trying new rom From Honeysense to RCMIX to CM7 stuff with all the great minds in here you would hope that something truly great would come out of the whole Android 4 situation i know lots of the guys are waiting for the official source to be released and i respect that but all this recent jiggery pokery has just got a bit silly. It's all a bit "IT'S MY BALL AND I'M TAKING IT HOME WITH ME" for my liking stop spitting your dummies out and let's concentrate on being a community again!
I agree. Sadly its human nature.
I will be keeping a watchful eye on things, so rest assured that "we" have noticed it.
Sadly I'll also have to close this thread, its a flame/troll fest waiting to happen.
So on a positive note enjoy the dancing lock.
Keep watching, he does fall over.

Motorola exposing customer data in recovery image emails

When you request the recovery image for your Moto X, Motorola exposes your email address to everyone else who has requested the same image for a given timeframe.
This is unacceptable exposure of confidential customer data.
Hey Motorola, how about you stop holding our recovery images hostage and just provide a regular no-authorization-required HTTP download instead of all this Google Docs authorization BS and get rid of this problem altogether?
Screenshot for proof:

Might be best to post this on the Motorola forum.
Customer service has been great for me.

I agree, and I posted it there as well. I just wanted to make XDA users aware because XDA users are especially likely to try and get recovery images from Motorola.
Yup, probably best to post this at the official Motorola forums. It's probably a stupid oversight, like "I have this great idea to streamline the distribution of the stock image... Oops..."
They have nothing to gain from that, it was probably a coding error in the system that handles the requests and distributions.
Plus... Your email is already all over the place... Privacy, confidentiality? What the hell is that these days... It doesn't exist, so another 2 dozen people have your email, no reason to be over dramatic about it.
Sorry, my philosophy is, not to make mountains out of mole hills... No offense to you.

Some people have separate email accounts that they prefer to keep private. Regardless of your lax attitude towards confidential customer data, this is indeed an important issue and Motorola has just acknowledged that they will fix it.
Have you forgotten that Weev was sentenced to over 3 years in federal prison just for exposing iPad customer's email addresses? http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57592084-83/at-t-ipad-hacker-appeals-conviction/
Vint Cerf had a very interesting take on privacy: http://m.cnet.com/news/vint-cerf-privacy-may-be-an-anomaly/57613120?ds=1

Should have at least used Blind Carbon Copy (BCC). This is very surprising coming from Motorola. This tends to happen with less-established businesses (e.g. one person businesses who aren't tech savvy). People don't think sometimes.
Chances are, no one on that list is a spammer and is going to sell your email address. But it does suck, and I agree you have every right to be upset about it.
Think positive though -- here's your chance to get a gift card out of it when you complain.

Teaching Ubuntu App Development

At the virtual UDS in November we talked about having events where local communities could learn more about app development for Ubuntu for the first time. Since then we have come a long way:
We have some really nice materials set up.
The first events were held in a number of places around the world.
We got feedback and improved our docs.
Before the Ubuntu Global Jam and the release parties for 14.04 LTS we will have two Q&A sessions where you can ask all organisational and technical questions you might have.
You don’t have to do everything yourself!
When we started the initiative, we first talked to members of the Ubuntu community who knew a bit of app development already. Many of them liked the idea, but didn’t quite know how to set up an event or how to organise everything. We tried to address this by bringing them in touch with some of the LoCo teams which helped in a bunch of cases where events have already happened or are going to happen quite soon. We want more of this to happen.
It’s only understandable that you can’t do everything yourself, or that one person’s skills lie in a more organisational field and somebody else has some more experience with app development. Bringing the two together, we are going to have more interesting events, more people introduced to writing apps for Ubuntu, which will be great for everyone involved.
Getting started
Sounds good so far? Here’s what you can do to get more folks exposed to how sweet and easy it is to write apps for Ubuntu.
As somebody who can organise events, but might need to find a speaker: Ask in #ubuntu-app-devel on Freenode or on the [email protected] mailing list, to see if anyone is in your area to give a talk. Ask on your LoCo’s or LUG’s mailing list as well. Even if somebody who’s into programming hasn’t developed using Ubuntu’s SDK yet, they should be able to familiarise themselves with the technologies quite easily.
As somebody who has written code before and didn’t find the Ubuntu app development materials too challenging, but might need to find some help with organising the event: Ask on the [email protected] mailing list. There are LoCos all around the world and most of them will be happy to see somebody give a talk at an event.
Whichever camp you’re in:
Check out our docs. They explain what’s required to make the event a success.
Join our Q&A sessions at 26 March 2014, 09:00 UTC or 27 March 2014, 18:00 UTC on Ubuntu on Air.
Talk to us. Just comment on the post and we can surely help you out somehow.
Let’s make this happen together. Writing apps for Ubuntu and publishing them has never been easier, and they’ll make Ubuntu on phones/tablets much more interesting, and will run on the desktop as well.

Nextbit Baton offers several benefits to users, including:
Sync: Keeps apps and data in sync across multiple devices, allowing users to move fluidly from one device to the next without missing a beat.
Pass: Send any open app in its current state to another device, saving time and eliminating the tedious process of manually finding and opening apps on different devices.
Backup and restore: Save apps and data to your Nextbit profile in the cloud, so you can always get your apps back on any device.
Nextbit’s private beta is exclusively on CyanogenMod, the leading open-source, community-driven Android OS backed by Cyanogen Inc. The future public release of Nextbit will be available first on the commercially distributed Cyanogen operating system.
“Cyanogen continues to reimagine Android by introducing bold new firsts,” said Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen. “Nextbit represents one of these platform firsts that could only manifest on a truly open Android. We enable Baton to become a native OS level feature, creating huge benefit for our users.”

I was actually an Alpha tester (can come out and say that officially now). It really is awesome and rather useful.
