[Q] Safestrap Failure - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I followed the video exactly and when I get to the point of the first Restore (around 9:00), it says "Restore Complete - Failed". There is a button to Reboot System. When I tap that, the phone won't turn on. I have to pull the battery to get it back on. I guess I'll be uninstalling Safestrap. If I "Uninstall Recovery" from the stock ROM slot, will the space be freed up again and the phone be returned to the same state as before I tried using Safestrap?

Its a known issue with safestrap currently. Check out the safestrap thread in development and read through the posts to get all the answers. But yes... Once you uninstall the recovery your storage space will show accurately again.

[Q] Don't Have Rom or Useable Backup On Device - What Next?

I got stuck on the google screen trying to revert from a custom kernel to a dowloaded stock kernel.
Wiped device with plan of restoring the backup I made earlier. When I get into recovery mode and attempt to flash backup it shows "no files" in backup folder.
***How do you get a ROM on the device at this point? N7 will not show on "computer" when connected.
Thanks!
If you're running windows, get the toolkit by WugFresh. If you aren't running windows, search the threads yourself to find out, I'm sure this has been addressed before.
So, 2 things, A) search the forums first, before starting a thread, and B) this is in the wrong section, try the Q&a section next time.

[Q] Problems after ROOT - Help

I'm not a total noob, I have been rooting and installing custom roms on my Xoom and other smartphones for about 2 years now and consider myself to be knowledgeable enough to go ahead and root my new S4.
Here's what's going on.
I'm having some major problems after rooting my S4 using djrbliss' Motochopper root method.
After rooting I installed Titanium Backup and did a complete backup of the device "all user apps and system apps" to a folder on my ext. SD card.
Over the coarse of a week I began to remove some of the AT&T bloatware.
I removed AT&T Navigator, AT&T Family Map, AT&T Mobile TV and AT&T DriveMode.
I kept MyAT&T, AT&T Smart WiFi and AT&T Messages for the time being.
I like using the Samsung Messages app more than the AT&T Messages app.
So I decided to uninstall AT&T Messages this morning and that's where all my problems started.
I started getting "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." messages constantly.
So I rebooted and I got the message that "Contacts has stopped working" and the same "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." Upon checking my contacts sure enough I would get a "loading" circle and my contacts would never load.
I then tried to reinstall AT&T Messages using Titanium Backup. I noticed that a system app called "Contacts Storage 4.2.2" was also uninstalled. But every time I tried to reinstall any apps I would get "Titanium Backup has failed to reinstall "x" number of apps".
So reading up on androidcentral someone said to do a Factory Reset, which I did, but now things have gotten worse.
The Samsung setupwizard keeps crashing and now I'm stuck in a virtual loop and can't get back into my phone.
I then downloaded the "[FACTORY STOCK] GS4 Stock Firmware Odin Package- Original Factory ROM" from that thread in an attempt to set my phone back to stock and hope that that will fix my problems.
I followed the instructions but when I get to step 5:
"Hold Volume Down + Home + Power until your device enters Download(Odin) Mode, then press volume up."
the phone does not go into "Download(Odin) Mode". Is Odin something that has to be installed on the phone first?
The thread never states this.
Please any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Odin mode is download mode for all intensive purposes. Odin itself is a computer program although there is a mobile version (mobile version doesn't currently work on s4)

So the thread "[FACTORY STOCK] GS4 Stock Firmware Odin Package- Original Factory ROM" is a bogus thread?
The tread was written for the S4.
Did you already try restoring all your user and systems apps from your tb backup?

What? AdamOutler is a reputable dev with a wealth of knowledge. That is in no way a bogus thread. Mobile Odin does not work on the S4. That is an Odin application that is self inclusive on the phone with no need for the computer. From what I read it requires a custom recovery to then write the stock images. We can't do that at the moment because of the locked boot loader and chain fire needs to update the app as well.
Odin (the computer version) is what is described in the thread you mention. That requires a computer for the program and a USB cable to be hooker to your S4. Be sure to follow all directions in the thread to a "T" for this process or any for that matter

I hope you figure it out man... as a rule of thumb, i always disable first and then remove after i can prove to myself the phone is stable for a few days.
Have you tried just using Kies to restore the firmware? I had the same issue after doing a factory reset through the phone settings.
Here is the link to the guide on doing the Kies restore.

If you still want to do it with Odin... To get your phone into download mode you hold down Volume Down and the Home button. Then while holding those down you press the power button until the phone vibrates and then let off only the power button.

Then what is AdamOutler talking about in his thread?
He doesn't say anything about needing to have a custom recovery installed on the S4 first.
I have followed the instructions to a "T", and when I get to step 5 the phone does not go into Download(Odin) Mode.
Do I need to do step 6 before step 5?
What am I missing here?

You need to read what I write more carefully. I discussed mobile Odin in the top portion and explained about the recovery being necessary to use that.
The PC version of Odin does NOT require a custom recovery, unlocked boot loader or any of that good stuff.
As for steps do as he instructs. When you get to 5 and 6 where you seem to be having trouble, hold the button combo until you enter download mode, hit volume up to continue and then plug the micro USB into your phone (cable already plugged into PC before hand). Your device should be recognized by Odin

Thanks RandomHandle:
Your detailed explanation on how to hold and release the buttons was able to get me back on my feet.
The only difference is that the phone doesn't vibrate when you hold all 3 buttons down, the screen just goes black.
After it goes black I release the power button and keep holding down the volume down and home buttons, after a few seconds then the phone vibrates and then goes into downloading mode. I didn't use Kies, I stuck with Odin since I spent about an hour downloading the ROM.
Phewwww!
I was scared that I was going to have to go into the AT&T store and play dumb to try and exchange the phone.
Although the big unlock symbol and the word "Custom" underneath it would have shot me down.
:victory:

Hi Mike on XDA,
Random handle was able to help me out.
It's the way you press the 3 buttons that was hosing me.
AdamOutler needed to explain that just a little bit better.
You have to hold volume down + home + power, wait for the screen to go black, then release the power button only and keep holding down the volume down + home for about 5 seconds more, then the phone will vibrate and enter "ROM Install" mode. That's when the phone will warn you about installing custom ROM's, you then press up to proceed into "Download" mode or volume down to cancel.
Anyway after getting the S4 into "Download" mode I was able to reinstall the AT&T stock ROM and all was well.
Just a note: After re-installing the AT&T stock ROM your phone will be un-rooted again.

[Q] Safestrap TWRP Galaxy S4 MF3

I just have a few concerns after "rooting" my MF3 S4. I want to run CM.10 nightly rom, and the only way I can install the CM.10 rom is by the Safestrap TWRP method as a "temporary solution" for locked bootloader because of the OTA update to MF3. Backing up a "Rooted Stocked Rom" right after I flash the "custom recovery" (I know it's not really a real custom recovery), will I be able to "Clean Install" CM10 by wiping everything before installing CM.10? Will the backup be reliable source to recover in the Safestrap TRWP "recovery"??? Thanks for reading and thanks for any help to my question and even possible success stories in advance.

You can't use cm roms, only tw based roms in safestrap.
thanks for the help. is there any Roms similar to CM.10 that will work? and is a back up of the "root stock ROM" reliable to flash if there are any issues?

Because I didn't set my phone in "download (Odin)" mode, that's why when the worker connected the phone to the Samsung Tool it read "my device is not supported."? Before the worker connects my phone to Samsung Tool, put my phone in "download" mode?
I've went to best buy Samsung to try to reflash, but somehow my "device is not supported" when they connected my phone.

PLEASE HELP. Boot loops to recovery

I installed the HORSEMAGEDDON ROM and it worked - for the most part. But it kept giving me annoying errors about different apps that were attempting to update every time I turned it on. So I tried to restore my backup that I had made with CWM 6.0.2.8. However the backup apparently did not restore properly because it now boot loops back into CWM any time I try to start it. I get the errors:
E:Can't open cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open cache/recovery/last_log
So I tried to reflash HORSEMAGEDDON but it still loops back into the CWM recovery screen.
I have wiped everything according to the instructions on the HORSEMAGEDDON thread.
HELP!! This happened to me on another U8800-51 phone and I wound up hard bricking it trying to get back to stock.
Anybody???
Does anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this?

Yes. I did a wipe of data and factory reset as well.
What I would do is get an SD card with a custom rom on it and try installing it from recovery menu

Obviously you have been having problems with that rom, so go with something different.

Okay. Here is what I did step by step:
1. I was on Stock 2.2.2 Froyo and flashed HORSEMAGEDDON successfully. But I had some errors related to updates since it was such an old ROM the updates were all for much newer versions of the apps tied to 4.x.x.
2. I attempted to restore my backup made with CWM 6 to return to the stock. It said it completed successfully but when I rebooted it just looped into the recovery screen with the error messages posted in my first post.
3. So I tried to reflash HORSEMAGEDDON and it said it completed successfully. But it still bootloops into recovery.
4. I can access most of the features of the recovery. I can access the pink screen and swap recovery versions. I can access my SD card from my PC when I mount it from recovery.
5. Yes, I did do full wipes with each attempt to reflash.
The ROM was not the problem. It worked and worked well other than update issues for apps. It was only after attempting to restore to stock I ran into issues.
The problem appears to be something was corrupted when I tried to restore my backup, even though it said it completed successfully.
So if I try to flash yet another custom ROM, even if I could find one I trust given all of the version issues etc., I don't think it would act any differently. But if somebody can recommend one I am all ears. Keep in mind I have a -51 phone so it will have to be for that or the PRO.
Given that, how can I get back to stock? Am I the only person who has ever had this problem? I don't believe that is the case, so somebody must know how to fix it or can point me to a procedure to repair the internal memory.
Help!!

None of the fixes on this link seem to apply to my situation.
When I said "bootloop" I may have misused the term. What happens is I power up, it goes to logo screen for about 10 seconds, shuts down and restarts to logo screen then goes into recovery after about 5 seconds. From other info that I have found it is due to a corrupt bootloader and I need to reflash the bootloader. Problem is, reflashing the bootloader i.e. CWM, does no good at all.
I am also hampered by lack of info specific to the -51 model. And I cannot find a copy of the stock ROM anywhere that is for the -51.
So essentially I am screwed. All of that said, I have found a new phone for $40.00 so all is not lost. It's a U8800 but not the -51 or PRO. I don't plan on customizing it, I'll just stick with stock. After trashing two phones even after following the advice to "BACKUP" I think enough is enough. Backing up did me no good whatsoever in both cases.
In my estimation, the culprit is CWM, or at least the versions I used.
If anybody has any advice I'm all ears.

AT&T S4 can not get into recovery mode (MF3)

Phone information:
Model number: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: I337UCUAMF3
Kernel version 3.4.0-812098
Unlocked, Rooted with 3rd party software, show "samsung custom” every time when turned it on, then AT&T logo...
Want flash "danvdh google edition 4.4.2 ROM", and already transfer it to sd card.
Installed rom manager. Want to backup rom before flash, can not do it. When select "backup curent rom", restart, top left showed “recovery booting”, then saw a robot laid down with "!", showed "no command" under the robot. up showed:
#manual mode#
-- Applying muli-cs ...
applied the csc code: att
successfully applied multi-csc.
Top left showed some like
android system recovery <3e>
...
reboot system now
....
apply update from cache.
When select reboot, showed "error" first, then reboot.
Please give some suggestion, Many thanks!!!

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately the Manual is named READ-READ-READ--
There are several threads in General and Q&A that will cover all you need to know about SafeStrap
Best to read them all as no one thread has everything--
Follow these closely or you can brick
Personally I read the OP pages and first/last 20 pages, or more, of any new rom etc I want to flash
People seriously need to start reading -.- all the questions on here are referring to not being able to get into recovery when they are on mk2 and mf3. It's all over stating there's no custom recovery for them yet we get posts like this -.- just read. It's not that hard.
