[Q] Problems after ROOT - Help - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'm not a total noob, I have been rooting and installing custom roms on my Xoom and other smartphones for about 2 years now and consider myself to be knowledgeable enough to go ahead and root my new S4.
Here's what's going on.
I'm having some major problems after rooting my S4 using djrbliss' Motochopper root method.
After rooting I installed Titanium Backup and did a complete backup of the device "all user apps and system apps" to a folder on my ext. SD card.
Over the coarse of a week I began to remove some of the AT&T bloatware.
I removed AT&T Navigator, AT&T Family Map, AT&T Mobile TV and AT&T DriveMode.
I kept MyAT&T, AT&T Smart WiFi and AT&T Messages for the time being.
I like using the Samsung Messages app more than the AT&T Messages app.
So I decided to uninstall AT&T Messages this morning and that's where all my problems started.
I started getting "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." messages constantly.
So I rebooted and I got the message that "Contacts has stopped working" and the same "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." Upon checking my contacts sure enough I would get a "loading" circle and my contacts would never load.
I then tried to reinstall AT&T Messages using Titanium Backup. I noticed that a system app called "Contacts Storage 4.2.2" was also uninstalled. But every time I tried to reinstall any apps I would get "Titanium Backup has failed to reinstall "x" number of apps".
So reading up on androidcentral someone said to do a Factory Reset, which I did, but now things have gotten worse.
The Samsung setupwizard keeps crashing and now I'm stuck in a virtual loop and can't get back into my phone.
I then downloaded the "[FACTORY STOCK] GS4 Stock Firmware Odin Package- Original Factory ROM" from that thread in an attempt to set my phone back to stock and hope that that will fix my problems.
I followed the instructions but when I get to step 5:
"Hold Volume Down + Home + Power until your device enters Download(Odin) Mode, then press volume up."
the phone does not go into "Download(Odin) Mode". Is Odin something that has to be installed on the phone first?
The thread never states this.
Please any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Odin mode is download mode for all intensive purposes. Odin itself is a computer program although there is a mobile version (mobile version doesn't currently work on s4)

So the thread "[FACTORY STOCK] GS4 Stock Firmware Odin Package- Original Factory ROM" is a bogus thread?
The tread was written for the S4.

Did you already try restoring all your user and systems apps from your tb backup?

What? AdamOutler is a reputable dev with a wealth of knowledge. That is in no way a bogus thread. Mobile Odin does not work on the S4. That is an Odin application that is self inclusive on the phone with no need for the computer. From what I read it requires a custom recovery to then write the stock images. We can't do that at the moment because of the locked boot loader and chain fire needs to update the app as well.
Odin (the computer version) is what is described in the thread you mention. That requires a computer for the program and a USB cable to be hooker to your S4. Be sure to follow all directions in the thread to a "T" for this process or any for that matter

I hope you figure it out man... as a rule of thumb, i always disable first and then remove after i can prove to myself the phone is stable for a few days.

Have you tried just using Kies to restore the firmware? I had the same issue after doing a factory reset through the phone settings.
Here is the link to the guide on doing the Kies restore.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984717
If you still want to do it with Odin... To get your phone into download mode you hold down Volume Down and the Home button. Then while holding those down you press the power button until the phone vibrates and then let off only the power button.

No not all my user and system apps, just the ones I uninstalled after I rooted.

Yea, that's what I should've done.
Should've freezed first, then deleted.

Then what is AdamOutler talking about in his thread?
He doesn't say anything about needing to have a custom recovery installed on the S4 first.
I have followed the instructions to a "T", and when I get to step 5 the phone does not go into Download(Odin) Mode.
Do I need to do step 6 before step 5?
What am I missing here?

You need to read what I write more carefully. I discussed mobile Odin in the top portion and explained about the recovery being necessary to use that.
The PC version of Odin does NOT require a custom recovery, unlocked boot loader or any of that good stuff.
As for steps do as he instructs. When you get to 5 and 6 where you seem to be having trouble, hold the button combo until you enter download mode, hit volume up to continue and then plug the micro USB into your phone (cable already plugged into PC before hand). Your device should be recognized by Odin

Thanks RandomHandle:
Your detailed explanation on how to hold and release the buttons was able to get me back on my feet.
The only difference is that the phone doesn't vibrate when you hold all 3 buttons down, the screen just goes black.
After it goes black I release the power button and keep holding down the volume down and home buttons, after a few seconds then the phone vibrates and then goes into downloading mode. I didn't use Kies, I stuck with Odin since I spent about an hour downloading the ROM.
Phewwww!
I was scared that I was going to have to go into the AT&T store and play dumb to try and exchange the phone.
Although the big unlock symbol and the word "Custom" underneath it would have shot me down.
:victory:

Hi Mike on XDA,
Random handle was able to help me out.
It's the way you press the 3 buttons that was hosing me.
AdamOutler needed to explain that just a little bit better.
You have to hold volume down + home + power, wait for the screen to go black, then release the power button only and keep holding down the volume down + home for about 5 seconds more, then the phone will vibrate and enter "ROM Install" mode. That's when the phone will warn you about installing custom ROM's, you then press up to proceed into "Download" mode or volume down to cancel.
Anyway after getting the S4 into "Download" mode I was able to reinstall the AT&T stock ROM and all was well.
Just a note: After re-installing the AT&T stock ROM your phone will be un-rooted again.

AT&T Galaxy S4 Wont Boot into Recovery

I have a client's Atnt galaxy s4 that will not boot up normally and will not boot into recovery also.
when i try to boot into recovery i get the blue lettering in the top left and it just sits there i have let it sit for sometime like that with no change.
this is not my first go around with flashing android devices so please even give me Dev only options if that is what you think will fix it. i feel bad because he just bought this phone 2 weeks ago and cant use it. not sure what the other guy that tried to root it did and neither does he so i am shooting in the dark so any help would be great.
I have tried flashing the stock Odin package with no luck.
Also tried Kies Firmware upgrade with no luck
Most of the custom recovery for this phone from what i read are not flashed threw odin anymore, but if i am wrong please link me and i will give it a shot.
Dose anyone have any ideas someone told me to use the .PIT file and re-partition the device and reflash the stock odin package. but i have had no luck locating the .pit file for the I337 galaxy S4 could anyone grab it from there phone and upload it for me or any ideas on how i could possibly fix this issue.
Thanks in advance
Since you already tried ODIN, why don't you try KIES.
I tried that allrdy just forgot to add it to the list updated first post
Copied this from another thread, guy was having same issue.
EDIT: Problem solved by scott14719. Here it is: As soon as you feel the phone vibrate, immediately let go of the power button but continue to hold the other buttons until the recovery boots, then let go of them.
Phone goes into download mode ok?

ok i will have him give it a try
and yes it goes into downloading mode with no issues at all.
if the os isnt hosed just download goomanager and install the recovery then download a touchwiz rom that has an extended reboot menu, you can then just boot into recovery from the OS.

If you can get into download mode and odin it should wipe everything, it should work. Maybr its hardware?

In addition to letting go of the power button after the vibrate, here are a couple of other things that appear to have worked for other forum members. I didn't discover any of these fixes, I just did a lot of reading and saw where others have had similar problems and found ways to solve them. That is what makes the XDA community great:
Uppercuticus said:
I've had this happen to me several times while playing around with flashing. Basically (without fail in my experience), hold power+volume up+home as you'd normally do until you see the booting recovery message and let go. It will do one of two things - boot into recovery- or - restart and vibrate-. If it restarts and vibrates, immediately hold power+volume up+home until the booting recovery message pops up again and let go. It should then boot into recovery and you shouldn't have trouble in subsequent attempts.
It took me a while to figure this out and I actually thought I had permanently bricked my phone as the phone wouldn't boot and I couldn't get into recovery. Hope this helps.

After using ODIN, make sure to do a software (factory reset) to get rid of any data and settings that stayed behind. The firmware packages that we have for Odin, do not wipe everything on their own.

here are all the details;
Rooted ATT Galaxy S4 MK2 with Busybox. all went well until I tried to flash and boot into recovery. Installed ClockworkMod Recovery, tried to reboot into recovery...permission error. Installed Team Win Recovery, same problem.
investigated... Superuser.apk for some reason is NOT present in app directory. hmm. checked for root, have root.
installed ClockworkMod Superuser from play store... asks to update superuser... fails with signature error.
There seems to be no way to flash this phone. I have the original backup I made with ClockworkMod but restore fails with signature error.
The phone works fine, has root but I am concerned I will not be able to update to 4.4 when it's available. I am also NOT able to flash any alternative ROM. frustrating.
I see there are relatives to this issue all over xda but as far as I can tell after a weekend of trying is there's NO WAY to boot into recovery with write permissions being allowed.

will not boot up

I have an AT&T galaxy s4 that will not boot up. I tried to flash the ROM and install SlimBean 4.2.2 build 6. after it was installed and everything, the screen went black and will not show anything. It wont go into recovery mode and vibrates every 5 seconds whenever i power it on. i tried to flash the stock rom using odin, but that didnt work either. somebody please help!
Can you provide a link to exactly what it was you flashed?

i cant post outside links yet, but i used the one off of phone rebel's website. i found the link under "How To Unroot & Unbrick Samsung Galaxy S4 – Return To Stock AT&T, Sprint, T-mobile, Verizon & More!"
Firstly, why would you flash anything off an iOS website? Secondly, I meant a link to what you flashed before it bricked, not after.

i have US AT&T
Update: i found the link for the stock rom under http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261573
attempted to flash it using odin, but nothing has changed.
I'm unable to get into recovery mode or boot up the device. I can only go in to download mode. Any attempt to boot up the device or go in to recovery mode results in a blank screen and small vibrations every 5 seconds.
this all started after i attempted to flash SlimBean on to my US AT&T Galaxy S4.
can somebody please help me? im desperate and need assistance!

If you can go to download mode you can Odin back to stock. There's tons of Odin guides. I can't link because I'm on mobile but I'm sure you can search. As long as you have download mode youre not bricked and all is fine. Just be sure to have latest Samsung drivers installed for your PC.

It sounds like you tried to flash a ROM or Kernel that is not intended for the AT&T S4 and bricked your phone (screwed up your partitions). If so, you might want to look into JTag repair services. There is a PIT file available for the 16GB version of the phone but I wouldn't touch it if you don't know what you are doing.
Odin is working fine, and whenever i try to flash it back to stock, odin says that it passed, everythings good, etc. But then when phone reboots, it just stays at that blank screen and keeps vibrating.
And could you refer me to a guide or something on PIT files or JTAG services, please?
Exactly what he did, looks as if he flashed the incorrect kernel.
Odin is the answer.

pull your battery and wait a few seconds. place the battery back in and immediately press the recovery button combo (vol up + home + power. release just the power button when the device vibrates and you see the blue script in the top left corner).
if this gets you into recovery, wipe data and cache. reboot.
In Odin are you using the phone option or the pda option?
Please make sure you follow the Odin instructions exactly to the T.

You guys need to start providing links to exactly what you flashed. How is anyone supposed to know if it really was a "wrong kernel" or if it was a seemingly correct kernel that people should stay away from?
Edit: sorry, not you HeartAttack; I know you did.

i did earlier. i tried to flash slimbean on to mine (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292474) which is under the AT&T GS4 section, so i thought it wouldve been compatible. i was obviously wrong.
So this is what happened to me:
I flashed the foxhound rom (link) using CWM, (Wipe data, clear cache, & clear delvik cache. It installed perfectly, but because this is not an AT&T rom, I was having wifi issues.
Rather rewiping the data, clearing all caches and reinstalling the rom and then the ktweaker kernel, I just installed the ktweaker kernel (link) that I got off from galaxys4root.com.
This was my first time using this kernel with this rom. Since it was an AOSP rom I uses this kernel because it was also AOSP.
So now I'm stuck in this cycle where my phone vibrates every 3 seconds on a blank screen. I can enter download mode and I have used odin to flash original stock firmware, but I come back to this same issue every time. As OP mentioned, I am also not able to access CWM recovery after holding down keys to enter recovery.
NOTE: I believe every time the phone vibrates (every 3 seconds), the phone itself is rebooting. Therefore I don't have enough time enter recovery.

[How To] Recover From a Hard Brick (SM-900A Only)

I take no credit for this method, I felt it needed to be re-posted here. I snagged it from Shabbypenguins post over on Phandroid. It was originally for the Boost Mobile SGS3, but works for the Note 3 and several other devices.
What do I mean by hard brick?
Your phone doesn't power up, visibly charge, reach a boot-screen of any kind or go into download mode. Basically, it acts like it won't power on at all. Hard bricked. Even if you nuke the aboot, sbl1, boot, etc... like I did, this method will revive your phone!
This is a great safety net for those who want to test bootloader exploits!
What do you need?
Bricked Galaxy Note 3 (SM-900A)
microSD card (all data will be erased from this sdcard)
microSD card reader
Linux / OS X (can be running in vmware/virtual box on windows)
Unbrick Image (MI9)
Stock Odin Files
Unbricking Instructions
Boot Linux / OS X / VMware / Virtual Box
Download the unbrick image listed in the item's needed list
Open terminal on your OS
Insert your microSD card into the reader
Plug your microSD card reader into your computer
Run
Code:
dmesg | tail
you should see something that mentions where it is mounted via /sdX
Code:
sudo dd if=/<path_to_debrick.img> of=/dev/sdX
again where X is the microSD card ignoring the partition numbers as they should be overwritten
I had to do this a couple times for the image to actually take
Code:
sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdX
should show approximately 29 partitions (I just unplugged and replugged the usb, lots of windows popped up from the partitions)
remove the microSD card from the reader
remove the battery and sim from your device
insert your unbrick microSD into your phone
insert the battery and press the power button, it should boot
reboot into Download mode either via adb or Volume Down + Home + Power
use stock odin files to restore your phone
Thanks to the following:
Shabbypenguin for pointing me to this!
gTan64 for finding the fix while repairing their friend's phone.
KAsp3rd for showing Shabbypenguin this and assisting him throughout it
Thanks so much, you guys rock!
This is the good stuff!

We have several people with unrecoverable boot looped devices over in the 900T forum because of failed nandroid restores. They can get to download mode but flashing via odin to stock does not fix it. They are stuck in boot loops even after flashing via odin. In your opinion, would the unbrick image adapted to the 900T help them?

this is for people who really brick, you overwrite your aboot/sbl's. on the SGS3 this was done by flashing an international rom as their kernel was on MMCBLK0p5 while us SGS3 that was our aboot (bootloader). whats particularly good about this is it means that designgears can nuke his bootloader trying to find exploits/unlock etc and still end up working device by the end of the night (like was done last night). to cut any questions on it, dont bother with trying to sdcard boot the tmobile bootloaders
this is more of a in case things go bad kind of scenario where you cant get to download mode, and if this guide is too confusing etc there is always a jtag (mobiletechvideos is one of the big ones on xda i believe).

Are you using the stock odin files? It should boot into recovery after flashing and wipe the device and install a few more files.

Yes we used all type of odin 3.04. To 3.09 and flash pure stock rom and then wipe everything in stock recovery and still get bootloop and missing baseband version so no network and no imei number. This problem come after nadroid backup restore not for me but many xda members of internional note and t mobile. All are crying. Some get replacement some of there phone in service center and no body report about result from service center.

Looks interesting. Getting my Note 3 soon for app/ROM development. One question. Will this work on Telus Note 3? It's Canadian. If not is there a method smiler to this? Really value my devices and don't want to hardbrick them.
could this be used as a way to exploit a 9005 rom to flash and unbrand our device :silly:
This should really be stickied!
God we gotta get this thing unlocked

I have an issue where I tried to follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2474422 to Root with knox 0x0 but it dies prematurely on the flash and now I get a "firmware error" screen saying i should go back to kies and reflash. Would this solve my problem and would it increase the counter to 1?

Had the same issue and its cuz the USB debugging was turned off in the Developer apps to my luck I had it on, but turned it off 1 week prior to my ph crashing... :crying: lol I tried EVERYTHING for 3 days and I'm tech savy lol What I ended up doing was using my fiance's note 3 to back up all her files via the SD card on her phone and then loaded it into mine and it worked like a charm. It's even a free app from the play store called "Root Browser" and NO you do not have to root their phone to copy their files... Copy the files, on the broken phone do the recovery mode (Volume Up + Home Key + Power Button) then load from external source. Be sure to wipe your data and all that before installing on the broken ph.... and bada-bing bada-bang! FIXED!
I suggest downloading that in the future and keeping that spare SD card in the GUN SAFE!!! just in case you happen to re-root your phone later lol
Hope this helps out since I about threw my Note 3 at the wall from all the looping frustration...lol Tried Odin, Kies3 and nothing... even the ABD cmd and no luck.... Idk why I didn't think about doing that in the past lol GOOD LUCK!:fingers-crossed:

We have several people with unrecoverable boot looped devices over in the 900T forum because of failed nandroid restores. They can get to download mode but flashing via odin to stock does not fix it. They are stuck in boot loops even after flashing via odin. In your opinion, would the unbrick image adapted to the 900T help them?

[Q] Flashed ROM - it rebooted and died?

Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered but search is down and I am panicking! I have an i-337 ATT Galaxy S4 that was unlocked for Tmobile. I just bought it 2 days ago and tonight I rooted it via motochopper and installed TWRP.
I downloaded Liquidsmooth and Gapps and flashed them via recovery. I did a factory reset and a nandroid backup. After the flash I selected reboot, and the phone turned off like it was rebooting, but never came back on!
I did a battery pull and nothing! I also tried holding down + home + power!
I accidentally forgot to wipe cache/dalvik cache after the install.
Help! I hope this isn't a brick. I've been rooting phones for a while and haven't ran into a problem.
No response when I plug it into the computer, and no charging light (the battery probably has 95% charge)
Thanks

You were holding down the wrong buttons.
Press and hold the VOL-UP button then press and hold the POWER button until
you see tiny blue text on upper left side of screen to go into "Recovery Mode".
If you want download mode do it the same way except instead of the VOL-UP
you need to press and hold the VOL-DOWN.
Good luck with it.
Remember it;s faster to click the "THANKS" button than it takes to type "thank you"!

Can you link to the specific rom you flashed. It's sounds to me like you might have flashed a bad or wrong rom.

I can't tell if the t01teatt is for your specific device. I haven't seen the t01te before. I would have expected something different. The symptoms you describe sounds like a bricked device caused by flashing a rom not for your specific device.
I assume your MDL cause you have a custom recovery.
Did you use Auto Loki recovery?
If you didn't use Auto Loki recovery did you flash the Loki doki zip ?
We need all steps you took from start to end before you rebooted your phone.

the phone was bone stock locked att i337. I unlocked it via the service hidden menu on YouTube. it worked fine.
next I rooted it with the motochopper, flashed twrp with goo manager and rebooted to recovery. my first load with twrp seemed to hang up and freeze, so I pulled the battery and rebooted into twrp.
I loaded the liquidsmooth to1att and gapps to be flashed. both seemed to flash successfully, and then I hit restart. forgot to wipe cache and dalvik, planned on rebooting back into recovery to wipe/maybe reflash and wipe cache.
the phone turned off and never turned back on.
I had a T-Mobile sim card in the entire time.
thanks and please help. sending this from my crappy evo lte
Did a little searching and I think the t01te is the note ii. Check out mobiletechvideos.com. they might be able to jtag it.
after root the phone was working fine on the stock ROM.

It's the rom you flashed after that which is causing the problem. Like I said I think it was for the note II and not the i337
Yup we only have liquidsmooth 2.10. Tolteatt is not this phone. This phone is jflteatt. Your only option is JTAG as jd1639 said

If Odin doesn't recognize it, and I think you said it doesn't, then yea I think that's your only hope. But I'd keep trying to get it into download mode and have Odin recognize it. I haven't seen a hard brick of the i337.
Use the original usb cable, the usb ports in the back of the computer, and if that doesn't work try a different computer.
The build.prop in that ROM you flashed says it is for the SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 which is the Galaxy Note II. That's why it is bricked. Make sure you don't try to flash that one again. If you do get it to come up in download mode make sure you have the correct file before trying to flash again.
Good luck!

...and end up with an MF3 phone?
It's better to send it off for Jtag like JD said. If it never had the MF3 bootloader on it, there shouldn't be a problem with them putting MDL back on it (as long as there isn't a hardware issue). To me, the cost is well worth it.

Yikes. Sounds like a locked bootloader. Verizon likes to throw in as many security checks as possible in their ****ed bootloaders I am so sick of their shet. Sorry I have a Note 2 on Verizon and I can't get a recovery on here I've bricked it 3 times now and just gave up trying. I am still on 4.1.2 yet Triangleaway never actually solved the problem. I can't wait to get off their stupid contract I am never using them again.
Sorry that I can't really answer your question atm but I can look into it here after I calm down.

No need to panic. There are several ways to return back to normal. Did you install safe strap once you rooted? If so, pull battery out, replace and reboot into safestrap. Click the wipe setting and then you wipe settings to an operable state of operation.

Actually, thought of something easier. Before you power phone up... hold the menu button, volume up button and then push power button together while still holding the other 2 buttons. This will start the phone up in recovery mode. Do a factory reset from this screen. You will lose your app data however you can recover the apps via Google play store. This way you'll also keep root. Doing the Odin recovery will lose root and restore to fresh out of box condition.

Question for you. Before you do any of this, did you try and reboot again and see what happens? Sometimes the phone does certain system checks via boot and may require a couple of minutes to do its thing. I would do this before you factory reset. Maybe it needs a moment or two. Give that a try before you do anything that will compromise your data and apps.

I turned it on with and without the sd card and no luck. let it run for 20 minutes to an hour on the verizon screen and nothing works. I just want to get at least some data off it. Looks like you may need to do a reset. Then, once you are reset install backup. This way you'll have some of those apps. Also, factory wipe will not delete SD card.
Yo, even *IF* you accidentally wipe your data, you're not completely out of luck. Once you get your device up and running again, I saw a guide on here once on how to mount your phone's internal nand as a harddrive on Windows and use one of those data forensic tools to recover all the deleted data. This may not work for some of your apps but you *will* get all of your screenshots/pictures/whatever files back! If ya want a can go back and look for this.

You're in luck, I found a boatload of forums you can look at! The popular choice among these is using Recuva, but all are different ways to go about it. Check these out:
Root app methods/Recuva Basics (NOOB FRIENDLY): http://www.alliance-rom.com/wiki/recover-deleted-files/
XDA Method (Windows): http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...de-internal-memory-data-recovery-yes-t1994705
MuhammadAG method (Linux): http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/mounting-your-android-devices-internal-storage/
My suggestion (Try this first with Recuva): Flash your phone back to stock, reroot (using Framaroot or other non-invasive method), get terminal emulator (*NOT* through Play Store, don't even set up Google accounts, this will potentially overwrite data), in emulator get su and type "setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage" and see if that pops the cap. Samsung is stubborn tho and will not usually let this one fly. It might fly if you happen to install some other than stock rom.
Sorry that this is a lot of info... weigh your options!!
Best of luck,
Please do say thanks!
