What is people's experience with disable software rendering ??? Performance/battery life
Personally I think the d802 is more laggy

Enabling "Force GPU Rendering " for more speed in some apps

Before I start credit belongs to eL_777 for posting this in the asus prime thread.
I read that enabling the "Force GPU Rendering " in the developer options would increase the speed of apps. I so I gave it a try and it has definitely increased the overall smoothness for me. I also what to add that it may cause some apps to force close but the only issue I noticed so far is launcher pro not displaying properly. I just switched to adw ex so that is no longer an issue. I opera, browser and tapatalk seem to be faster. It also seems to have an impact on the YouTube app. Hopefully this info helps some people out.
I didn't come across this yet in the xoom forum so I thought it I would share. Sorry if it is common knowledge.

Hey guys I noticed earlier that my Netflix app was ALOT smoother than it used to be before the ICS update but several others disagreed with me so I was confused. Then I remembered that I enabled this setting in the developer options menu in the android settings, "Force GPU Rendering". Make sure you enable that, close Netflix and start it back up and it should be a million times smoother after you do that. Hope this helps.

I had tried it and thought that there was an improvement in smoothness, but it seems that as you say, it can break some applications. But thanks for the reminder.
Enabling this preference in developer options offloads task of rendering window components like buttons, text and complex 2d graphics calculations to GPU. This often results in much faster UI rendering including animations.
On one side you will definitely achieve better frame rate (and hence smooth experience) throughout system, but you may end up using more battery. On certain devices, GPU consumes more power the CPU, hence you may observe 5-15% lower battery life with option enabled.
offloading UI rendering to GPU has obvious benefits so that CPU can work on other important tasks like database IO, data manipulation, layout calculations and responding to other user inputs.
I would recommend having this option enabled on devices with weaker CPUs e.g. You should seldom need to enable this on dual-core 1.4ghz ARM CPU.

I finally gave up GPU rendering as it crash the tab many times. Ie google maps hang the tab after 10-15 min time of usage to such extend that it bootlooped over and over till battery is dead. Also browsing web cause same crashes. If you face many random crashes-you know what to do.

Best performance settings for ICS ROM's on HD2

Hey guys! Been playing around with ICS ROM's lately on my HD2. Tried a lot of different performance options like Zram, Purging of assets Over-clocking and Under-clocking and etc. But for me no matter what I change, the settings does not improve nor performance nor battery life.
So tell me guys, do you change your settings from stock, does it help you improve performance/battery life, and if so write the best combination working for YOU!
Will be waiting your options guys on what setting works well for you (the whole layout please, performance stuff you toggle on/off, CPU Min/Max and governor), maybe your ideas will help someone new to ICS to improve even more on the awesomeness which is ICS on HD2
BTW: Wanted to flash a WP7.5 ROM cuz these little lags started to annoy me, but then discovered an AWESOME ROM by Zorua http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783913 And was amazed by the speed of this build. Nice job dude made me reconsider going back to WP7.5 And a special thx for securect for his hard work with the kernel and KGSL support.
Use CPU tuner

Use CPU tuner. You are allowed to set options like " normal mode or mode while display is off" etc. it helps to boost the battery life incredible.

Mybe this is crazy but I'm actually looking for performance. My phone is near the charger all day but maybe this is crazy since i know HD2 is an old device but the little lag annoy me))

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the LG V30 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Yeah, me too...
Consistently choppy scrolling, often jumps all the way back to the top when trying to flick-scroll down the the bottom. I primarily use the Chrome browser.
Ditto. Same choppiness, under same circumstances. Just got mine yesterday and I thought I was going crazy. Any explanations?

Actually, had a thought. I'm using a CPU monitoring app and it seems that cores 5-8 aren't being used much. Maybe it's a chip issue? Or maybe something's wrong with the kernel? I'm mostly a dummy when it comes to this stuff so forgive my wild speculation.

Settings/Developer Options/tick on "Force GPU Rendering" should make the beast smoother faster. if root available try L Speed/Entropy/fstrim apps found on Play Store! If LG G6 gets Android 7.1.2 , the performance should improve smoother over Android 7.0 just like the LG V30 is incredibly smooth and fast due to SD 835. Android Oreo 8.0 should have faster boot times on powering up. LG flagships gets Oreo by the end of this year (November or December)
I have some minor jittering when there are a lot of applications open. It's not something that would stop me from using the device, and overall I'm finding it to be an excellent carry piece.
i definitely notice a difference with GPU Rendering 2D activated
I have problem like this

Scrolling smoothness on Oreo? Less stuttering than Nougat or same?
Browser smoothness is the worst on Oreo. I even did a factory reset and didn't help. I did enable GPU 2D. That help, but still a little choppy on scrolling.
Can't Use Chrome or Google search ... so jerky

After updating to Oreo yesterday, my flawless V30 is not able to run chrome or google search without epileptic seizures. Curiously, Dolphin Browser does not suffer from this stuttering. Anybody have any ideas?
im on oreo on my h930 and there are no problems when it comes to scrolling.
maybe a clean install helps ?

Seemed to help alot. But still have a bit. Thank you for the info.
I just got a beta update for Play services. And that seems to have ironed out the smoothness for me.

Scroll Stutter, sort of a fix?

I've been messing with GPU settings as I'm rooted now.
Tried a few different Governors under GPU. Some cause the phone to reboot, so be warned if your messing also!! Watching how the frequency of the GPU ramps up, and it's seems very reluctant, so I set it to Performance Governor, thinking it might kill the batttery life, but imo there has been no massive drop in SOT.
The upside is, for me scroll stutter has massively improved.
Maybe there is some underlying problem with the way Essential are using the GPU which is causing the issues?
This is the only issue i have with the device.. SOT is insane... Not sure what i would call the scrolling issue its like the text blurs as i scroll. Maybe a refresh issue.. is that what your seeing?

Performance just keeps the CPU maxed out. If you don't think this affects battery life, you haven't used it long enough. Performance is really not meant for use, it's just meant for getting good benchmarks. It's not great for your phone, would not recommend doing this.

I decided to test this out on my device on Oreo Beta. You are 100% correct! I changed the GPU Governor to performance using EX Kernel Manager, and no more touch scrolling stutters! I will test for 24 hours to see how much of a hit I take in battery life. The touch scrolling is also night and day on Lineage OS vs stock. I will test and report back. Thank you for your suggestion!!

Thanks, I'm keeping a eye on battery also for the next few days.
As a note, I've contacted Essential about this to see if it is of any use to their techs
Its not perfect, but does seem to a big difference.
I've also contacted Essential.
I'm using Kernel Auditor by the way.

Scrolling has always been fairly good for me if you swipe the screen and remove your finger.
The issue appears when you scroll by running your finger up and down the screen whilst keeping constant contact.

One thing I was wondering about... the device uses LCD so maybe people think it's image ghosting as they touch scroll? I played around on a Pixel 2 XL and Moto Z Force today and my phone looks horrible next to those devices even with the GPU governor tweak.
In lineage os its awesome. No scroll stuttering at all. It drives me nuts in stock. But i would like to test it also.. Any specific settings that works best? This should be smooth af really with SD835. Now it's as laggy as Samsungphones. Blah! Hopefully Essential will fix this. Maybe this weekend i'll give stock a run again with root to test some settings. Someone should release a kernel
Try running GPU Governer as Performance.
Makes a difference for me with minimal battery life impact
Could be placebo, but I enabled Force GPU rendering in Developer Options and I haven't noticed the stutter as much as prior.
Well its definitly better with high gpu settings and interactive gouvrnour.

It's still so much better on Lineage OS. Even with the GPU governor set to performance on Oreo beta, touch scrolling is dramatically better in Lineage. Hopefully Essential can figure out something. I couldn't take it so I switched back to Lineage. Maybe once 8.1 Oreo is out I will try stock again. The performance on Lineage is what I would expect for this device.

Here's the reply to my report to Essential Support about the GPU settings and stutter.
Thank you for reaching out
We are aware of the issue with the scrolling stutter and our software team is working on some additional software improvements to address it. This is a high priority for our software team, and will be pushed out as a future software update.
I have seen some reports that setting it to Performance does reduce the stuttering, but I'm not sure what areas of the OS/hardware they are focusing on for the root cause. I appreciate your feedback and testing, and I will certainly share with our team.
I appreciate your patience. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to respond to this email. Enjoy your weekend!

Gaming settings

I would like to open the gaming discussion with all the informatin in one place. At the end I will sumarize it and adjust first post.
Android version
Nougat vs. Oreo - what is your experience. Is S7 gaming peformance really so much better in Oreo comapred to Nougat?
ROM
Which ROM do you find the best for gaming performance?
Game mode
Is game performance really better when game mode is on?
Game launcher/Game tools
Disable or enable for better performance?
Game tunner
Samsung Game tunner app, especially the HW pefrormance settings - It is important to turn it on or is it a point less?
Governor and I/O
Which governor and I/O do you find the best?
Additional tips for gaming performance
Place for your comments, scripts, settings, etc.
Thank you for your opinions.
I'm only playing PUBG mobile which is a poorly optimized game for the exynos imo but i'll give you my experiences anyway.
I feel gaming on Oreo is noticeably smoother than Nougat, i encounter less stuttering, frame drops, etc... since i updated to Oreo.
ROM
Latest Devbase v5.8
Game mode
I dont touch performance settings since i set hw performance in game tuner to +3 already
Game Launcher/Game Tools
The game launcher only groups everygame on your device to a folder and it has nothing to do with performance. So enabling or disabling it base on ur personal preferences
Game Tuner
It actually makes a noticeable difference in performance in graphics intensive games if you set it to +3 or +4, but on casual, less demanding games just set it to -2 or turn it off completely
Gov,io
Just leave them at their stock settings which is interactive and cfq and you will be fine
Additional tips
Personaly i lower my resolution in both game tuner and in display setting to achieve a more consistent frame rate
