[Q] n00b Question About Flashing Roms (Sprint) - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, pretty new to flashing, did a decent amount of reading on it but also am a bit skeptical about some things.
So far I have managed to root, install TWRP, and flashed the OptimusDE Rom. Like it, been using it a couple days.
My question is regarding trying a different ROM. I have done a back up, both of my original setup as well as the DE rom I have tweaked a bit and been using. Figured out how to back up, restore etc.
I want to flash a different rom to try out, however a bit nervous about what data to wipe prior to install via TWRP.
I believe from what I have read I should wipe everything except internal storage, however I would prefer to ask here before deleting all files and needing to learn about sideload or USB loading.. My back ups are in my TWRP folder, and my roms in the Download folder. (Also backed up to PC)
Also following the install do I wipe cache before reboot?

[Q] How do you reload the ROM if only TWRP is installed

Fairly new at android, so go easy on me.
Created a backup (apparently incorrectly), and decided to restore the backup. Once it was completed and I rebooted the KF booted into TWRP and no backups exist. The only folder is the TWRP, but boot, cache, data, etc. exist when you move up a level. Any way to force a ROM re-installation at this point? I can mount the drive via TWRP and can access the TWRP folder via windows explorer, but it appears that the entire system has been wiped. I can also use ADB to look at teh status and its saying that its online, rooted, and in recovery mode (5001). Any help would be appreciated.
There are numerous roms in the forum. Look around and find the one that is right for you. There is the stock rom if you want the original kf experience. I reccommend cm7 if you want a fully functional android tablet. Downlad any rom to your pc and copy to the fire using usb mount in twrp. I recommend wiping system, data and dalvik before flashing a new rom to avoid complications. I would add links but that is kinda hard from the fire. Lol

Awesome... I was stuck here for 4 hours at work today. LOL
Thank you very much.

[Q] Restore widgets/screen/folders/layout/etc

Just as title states, I always spend a lot of time after restoring apps and data from flashing a new ROM getting my screen and layout and folders and widgets as they were prior to flashing a new ROM.
Is there a way to restore all this quickly?
NO
The problem you're having is when you install a different ROM you usually "Wipe" everything. If you don't wipe /data then everything you have is still there. However you will have problems going from one custom ROM to another, as each developer has made some tweaks to the system packages.
Generally speaking, if you are running a "Stock Odexed" ROM you could possibly dirty flash a "Custom Odexed" ROM.
Same goes for Deodexed to Deodexed. You will have problems if you try to cross dirty flash a ROM.
So the simple answer to your question is NO there is no easy way, even if you backed up your Applications using a tool like Titanium Back Up.
If you are just updating the same ROM, the developer will say to either Clean Flash (wipe everything) or Dirty Flash (IMO still wipe cache and dalvik). If you can dirty flash everything will still be just as you set it up.
Got everything restored already, I'll have to just suck it up then I guess.
Just makes me wonder how flashaholics do it.

[Q] Galaxy S4 (....process.media-phone has stopped) Unroot failure! Please Help Devs!

Greetings all,
I have the i9500 S4,
I was running Hassan Rom and everything was fine, yesterday i've tried to boot the OzcanRom, and kept getting the (process.media. and process.phone not working)
The phone was not working, and after multiple tries of rebooting the said rom, i decided ill go unroot it and install the stock official rom (as i need my mobile for work etc...)
What i did is wipe the dalvikcashe and the system files (which i think was wrong) and tried to flash the stock rom via Odin the old simple way.
Everything went fine, when my mobile turned on again, i kept getting the same messages:
(the proccess android.process.media... & the proccess android.process.acore... & the proccess android.process.phone... Unfortunately email has stopped...& the new message Unified Deamon (EUR) has stopped.
The mobile is useless, can't access anything, can't connect to USB media so i can backup the files, can't connect to WIFI as it restarts...
Please help me guys as soon as possible i really need my mobile for my work...
(Preferably without a full wipe, or if necessary offer a backup way for my gallery)
Should i try installing a different stock rom? as i chose one from SamMobile that was the closest to my region...
Perform a factory reset. You can do that from the recovery or from within android. Make sure to backup the files on your internal storage.

Thank you for the reply.
I can do that, but i can't backup the files as nothing on the phone is working, pressing the gallery button for example, leads to the (process.media not working) message.
Any other solutions? i don't understand, isn't flashing a stock rom supposed to solve all these issues? should i try flashing another version of the Roms (different region perhaps)?
It does solve it, but you need to factory reset.
What I would do:
- Flash a custom recovery.
- Do the wipe option prepare for new rom.
- Flash stock/custom rom.
That way your internal storage won't be wiped.

Great, Got me relieved when you said internal storage won't be wiped.
Thank you for the reply, i don't want to be a pain in the ***, but could you please explain a few things,
What i'm gonna do is, flash a custom recovery (please recommend one that has the wipe for new rom)
Then, Do the wipe option, which wipe option, the recovery i had had only 1 wipe option, how do i know its not the one that's gonna wipe my data)
Finally, ill flash the rom. (Do i need to root my device again then? to flash a custom rom, if yes, im just gonna go with stock rom and let my mobile work for a few days where i need it then root and install a custom rom again)
I really appreciate your help, and your prompt answers.

- You can use Philz recovery
- You know the wipe option when you see it. The one that say prepare for new rom. No custom rom will wipe your internal storage. That option is somewhere hidden.
- You don't need to root, just flash.
ps you will lose all your apps. It will not wipe your internal storage.

[Q] Restoring Note 3prior backup causes Red Verizon hang screen

Recently installed Hyperdrive Rom on my Verizon Note 3. SM-900V, NC4, running KK 4.4.2 prior to this installation.
Followed instructions re flashing back to NC2, Rom installed, everything is good,
BTW, as a part of the process installed SafeStrap, which provided a nice TWRP related recovery.
Did as suggested, a backup through recovery.
subsequently, made a couple of other changes, making a new backup through recovery each time. At present, there are three recoveries in backup.
Now comes the problem...........Decided to restore a prior backup, as instructed, did the full wipe using SS recovery, selected restore file desired, all went well and rebooted phone, only to have it hang once it reached the Bright Red Verizon screen.
Rebooted to recovery, followed the above procedure two other times on the remaining two backups. Same results.
Have wiped (Factory reset) each time in recovery with no apparent success.
Is this now being caused by the fact that I'm @ NC2, rather than NC4?
Would appreciate any suggestions as how I can get back to being able to restore and use any of the prior backups.
As a temporary measure, I went into recovery and reinstalled the Hyperdrive rom but would like to be able to go back in time if possible, and for no other reason to be able to understand just exactly what is causing this issue. Perhaps others have the same and have resolved in some way. A Google search shows that some are suggesting a return to factory settings, i.e. a full wipe through recovery, however I've done that with no success.
Another question, what happens if I also "wipe" the system files as well as dalvic, cache and data? Have hesitated to do that for fear of the unknown consequences

I am essentially having the same problem. I am currently running on Biggins ROM and that had me install a unified verision of the NC2 and NC4 kernels (I came from NC4 prior to flashing). I wanted to go back to stock root and flashed my backup from SS, everything went well so I restarted and just like you the phone just never went passed the Verizon logo screen. So I reinstalled the Biggins ROM and it works fine now but I also want to know what I have to do when I want to install other ROMS or simply go back to stock root.

installing a rom

hello i have a quick question. I want to install optimus rom .My question is in order to install the rom i must do a full wipe which is to wipe delcache/cache/ data/system. But on the lgg2 d800 all my apps and games are stored on the sdcard partition of the internal storage. if i wipe everything will it also wipe these apps ? i dont care if it does im just asking because in the past i dont think it did. I think the rom installed and all my apps were still taking of space on my storage but i wasnt able o access them.
Also if i download the rom file to my phone how am i supposed to install it if i have to wipe the phone out? Am i supposed to use lg flash tool to get my phone back to stock ( meaning unrooted ) and then reinstall a kk rom then recovery ,root, then a new rom?
i only ask this because it seems like everythime i install the stock tot kitkat rom file here on xda theres always some issue with it.
It is generally advised to wipe data/cache/dalvik when flashing a new rom. When wiping your installed apps, messages, settings etc are deleted. Everything on your internal storage is not however.
Download the appropriate files,(Rom, gapps, etc), wipe and flash.
You can backup all your apps before flashing with Titanium backup, backup+, helium and so on..
If you are on stock you will need to root and install a recovery.. You'll find the appropriate guides in the forum..
Good luck.
