strange brightness intensity - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Sometimes when I am on web page or simply surfing facebook and my Note 3 dimms after 15 seconds as set, when I touch the screen, brightness will go lower as it has been set..Than I wait untill it dimms again, touch the screen and it goes to set level.. It happens either when on autobrightness (i am not moving phones position) or when all features controlling screen brightness are off (screen mode auto adapt, automatic tone adjustment, auto brightness, power saving options etc..) No third party app controlling brightness is installed.

Anyone can help?
It didnt disappear after hard reset..
Basically, once again - when screen dimms, sometimes after I touch it, it doesnt go back to the brightness I set manually, but stays dimmer..
Then, after 15 seconds (interval I have set for dimming) it goes slighty dimmer, than I touch the screen, and it goes back to the brightness it should be
Thanks

Maybe your Device ist to hot?
the Software dimm the Display to prevent for overheating.

I thought also that, but hard reset, no other extra apps installed, and It happens when I am browsing the I-net or chatting on Facebook for example..
It doesnt feel hot at all.. I have plastic case on it, thats all..

Hi, it feels like it has something to do with auto adjust screen tone.
For me it looks like, that even if its switched off, it is working when the screen dimms and i navigate to settings and click on it, screen goes back to brightness where it was immediately...strange..
Maybe some stock app is always using it? Hmmm

Do you have the problem from beginning or after long time surfing?
Try it in cold condition.
My Note reduces the brightness if it's really warm on top of backside, not really hot!
If you charging it at the same time, the overheating comes faster.
Surfing the web is a intensiv work for the CPU

Screen goes dim after a while

Hi,
i have a problem with my three days old HD. Besides the fact it seems to be much slower than it should be, the problem is the screen goes dim after a while. I'm not talking about it going black after a while, like it's supposed to, but in normal working mode it just kinda becomes darker, kinda like notebook screen goes a little dim when you unplug it from power. When i turn it on, it looks ok, but after a while, mostly after it first time goes black due to inactivity, the screen looks dimmed, no matter what i do, and after a few minutes it returns to normal, without any apparent reason, kinda random. At first i thought it might be something in HDTweak, so i did the factory reset, but it's happening again. Any ideas?
Try disabling the light sensor. It is supposed to adjust the screen brightness automatically, depending on the external light conditions. You can disable it in 'Energy', under Start -> Settings.
Well, it sort of works. When i disable the light sensor, i get the screen for adjusting the light on battery and AC. When i adjust the slider for battery, the screen lights up and it's ok. But, the moment the device locks itself (via HDTweak setting, the only thing i adjusted in HDTweak, it dims, and when i unlock it, it's still dimmed. Then when i again go into light sensor setting and press on the slider, it lights up. I don't understand what's going on. Faulty device maybe?
Also try changing the settings in the advanced tab.
Adding a minute or reducing a minute here seems to kickstart the device - and the annoying screen dimming goes away.

Auto brightness only brightens, never dims

I noticed that the brightness only brightens but never dims back in automatic brightness display setting. I can reproduce this easy with turning the lamp on my desk on and off. It only goes back to the lower brightness if turning the screen off and on again.
Noticed this too but seems to only occur when I use a widget to toggle between Auto and 100%.
If I leave the setting in Auto from within settings then it seems to work. Brightness widgets seem to break the auto functionality.
Hmm, I don't use a brightness widget. The light of the softbuttons go on if I cover the light sensor, but the screens stays in high brightness.

Must be an all around bug then. If you turn the Atrix off and back on then the auto brightness functionality is restored.

This must be an Android thing. My Atrix does the same thing, as did the Nexus One I had before. I've had several (high end) Nokia's that dimmed/brightened perfectly. After 5 seconds, they would brighten (or dim) accordingly. I was hoping Motorola was better at making phones than HTC (the KING of bad battery life). We ALL lose here. Our precious battery life is being drained by the poor execution of a simple function.
This is a stock android thing (problem). Custom ROMs can allow it to dim and change brightness smoothly rather than in discrete steps (Cyanogen).
That's what I thought. I found this free app called "esdimmer". It supposed to be for Galaxy phones, but it's somewhat working on my Atrix. Does this function work any better in Gingerbread?

Well it's good to hear that it's a stock android problem and not the actual phone. I did find a way to get around this problem but it's very limited. You can get the screen to dim by first putting the phone into standby and then press the standby button once again (which gets you into the lock screen). You'll notice that the screen then dims (if coming from a well lit area/room to a darker one).

Screen dims when it shouldn't

I have set my S4 up so that it runs at 100% display illumination when charging. No autobrightness.
What is bothering me know is that the screen dims to about 50% very quickly after I stop touching the display and jumps up to 100% while I touch it.
Toggling smart stay doesn't change anything. Smart stay on doesn't help even when I look at the display (though it should just prevent it from going off .. not from dimming if I understand correctly.
I would like to display to stay at 100% when charging .. or at least set dimming to "after 15 secs" or so.
What needs to be done?

I was reading about that and i found something about the chipset SnapDragon has an inside feature to adjust the screen brightness independently of the software (firmware on this case). Maybe you are watching that effect..

There is a small tool that fixes it: "Caffeine" .. obviously
Intelliscreen also does the trick .. and there is a timeout you can set (not sure if it messes up the timeout for regular use when not charging though).

Is not the solution because caffeine prevents from time up screen brightness but it doesn't prevent from cpu feature. Even if the screen is always wake up and the autobrightness is off, the brightness will be changed because the chipset.

Could this be related to heat? With the screen on and charging + what ever other task you have the S4 doing it may be the S600 is governing the screen to reduce heat... just a theory like.
I'm having the same problem too.
If i unlock the phone the screens dims to about minimum brightness.
I can touch the brightness bar to make it brighter and it stays that way for as long as i don't lock the phone
If i lock the phone and unlock it again the screen dims again?
Tried all different settings bur nothing helps...
Very annoying....
Yesterday i bought and installed lightflow to control my led indicator.
Just a minute ago i removed the app and voila! No more screen dimming!
Damn, really love that app but rather no led control than having my screen dimmed to the lowest possible brightness.

Visible time lag between touch and screen brightness?

Has anyone else noticed visible lag (~2-4s) say:
- after you unlock the screen (assuming the phone was not used for 5-10 minutes)
- and the screen comes up with low brightness
- till the screen returns to brightness (say when it is set to auto).
The lag is between the 2nd and 3rd step
Or another lag of (~1-1.5s), when you touch the screen, when it is been:
- a dim screen (when one has stopped using it for sometime, but not off yet and the brightness goes down),
and then you touch... till it attains:
- the normal brightness that the screen is supposed to be (say when set of auto).
I have noticed both behaviors like 8-10 times during last one day.
The native auto brightness algorithm and control really sucks. I use Velis auto brightness app from the market. Way much better.

Auto brightness not working correctly

When I'm in a light room the screen goes brighter but if I walk into a darker room, the screen doesn't dim unless I lock and then unlock the screen.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Yep got the same here. Thought I had a faulty ambient light sensor but obviously not.

Just tried it by covering the light sensor to make sure, no problem here (G935F). My only concern related to brightness is that the s7 just has auto brightness, but no adaptive brightness.
Uncheck the auto box and recheck. Then don't touch the slider. It's usually because in marshmallow the slider moves with the auto bright and most people touch it which makes it hold position.

There seems to be a bug somewhere still. I just tried to move the slider while auto brightness is ticked and to cover the light sensor afterwards again and it still worked and to my surprise it even took into account that I lowered the brightness and took also a lower brightness at the covered state and took my initial setting after uncovering, pretty nice, so there is indeed still adaptive brightness. After ticking und unticking auto it went back taking the default steps for brightness as before.
Having the same issue here
Definately not touched the slider.
Also, I have tested the light sensor and it appears to work fine so definately a software issue. Though I imagine we will see some software updates to fix bugs shortly after the official release date.
So you can adjust the slider with the box checked and get various levels of auto? Does it learn?

Yes.
I can't tell for sure, when I change further steps the previous seems to stick, at least to some extend so there is a logic behind it, but I can't tell for sure if it really is based on each step and sets it accordingly or if it's just changes the range it operates in. Anyways I'm a happy camper.
Also, I could reproduce the device not changing the brightness, when I put it to full at darkness it won't move anymore in auto. But as soon as I lower it again it will also change accordingly again, maybe at those with the stuck brightness the min brightness is only raised, but not lowered anymore, but just an assumption and doesn't help anyone atm unfortunately.

This is the first Galaxy phone I had, that Auto brightness actually works the way I like it.
It seems to be working fine now. It just takes a few seconds for the screen to dim (maybe I was being impatient).
After testing it further it's actually really good auto brightness.
It works, just takes some time to adjust to the lighting. Maybe the default settings are set to a certain time. Maybe with root we can adjust this..

It seems to only do it quickly when the device is lay down (as 954wrecker said). Maybe Samsung did that so it doesn't annoy you when using your phone.
this is definitely a bug imo... the auto brightness doesn't change for me either...

I also have an auto briteness issue, when I disable AutoBrite and set it manually about half my apps override the setting and enable AutoBriteness in the app's screen usually dimming the screen? SpadesFree one example and I do not see an override in the app.
Confimed that I'm having same issue, auto brightness not adjusting and slider not movingoing. Have to move it manually
Same issue. It needs to be fixed manually by editing services.jar (root needed)
Nothing else will work. None of google play apps will help with that issue. Does not matter what you do, it will always dimming if you don't fix it in framework.jar
