For some reason, when my Nexus 4 with stock 4.4.4 (rooted with TWRP) is connected through USB cable to my Mac desktop with Android File Transfer, the connection cannot be established. The message says:
Could not connect to device
Try reconnecting or restarting your device
The strange thing is that 1) I can connect to my Nexus 4 through adb with no problem; 2) I have no trouble at all connecting my Nexus 10 with stock 4.4.4 (rooted with TWRP) to my Mac through Android File Transfer. Anyone know what could be the issue with my Nexus 4?

Have you checked if it is using MTP instead of PTP? MTP is the correct option to use with Android File Transfer.

Thanks for the help! My N4 has been set with MTP all the time, so that is not the cause for the problem.

Few things come to mind.
1. go PTP and then return to MTP
2. Disable USB Debug and re-enable (or enable then disable, if that suits better your situation)
3. "Revoke USB debugging authorizations" also at Developer Options.

Thanks for the suggestions!
Just tried all the three things, but unfortunately the problem remains. Really puzzled by this: my Nexus 10 has basically the same setup and connects fine with my Mac.

My knowledge for in-system solutions has come to an end. I can only think now of (1) cleaning cache and dalvik cache, (2) factory reset and (3) factory restore via factory image.
Are you willing to take this route?

Hi,
This is my first Nexus device (N4), I know they have an emulated SD card, so I expected to connect it to my Win 7 PC via USB, and for the SD card directory to be shown as a file system / drive in Windows. This doesn't happen.
Phone is in MTP mode, screen isn't locked. Am I missing something here, a driver perhaps, or does this functionality no longer exist?
Thanks,
Des
You should get a Nexus 4 device along with your drives, you open that, then go to 'internal storage'
If you're not getting that, then it's probably driver related.
If it doesn't detect by USB at all, you may have a faulty device like me.
If you plug your phone into the wall with the AC adapter, does it constantly say " charging (USB)" in the battery settings?
This defect means I cannot root or charge the phone properly... It sucks..

Most likely a driver issue. When I have use the adb driver I cannot see my device as a storage device. Switching to the default driver Windows installs lets me see it but adb no longer works.
I ended up just using AirDroid to do any file transfers.
There are a few reports of the stock charger being reported as USB charging actually, so it might not be all bad.
The phone might be in MTP mode, but has it installed the MTP driver ? Check Device Manager.
On my own XP system, MTP wouldn't work for me until I turned off USB debugging.

^ This.
On XP, MTP does not work if USB Debugging is turned on. It may be the same for Windows 7 as well.
Same behavior on Windows 7, just fixed my issues. Thanks!
I got similar problem with my N4, yesterday I flashed Mahdi-ROM 2.4[1/02] then my USB stopped working. I can view files through PC, but cannot upload to phone. It says device has been disconnected, but it's still connected Turning off USB debuging didn't help.
I cannot even flash kernel uploaded through Airdroid, recovery gives error - cannot open zip file.
Edit: Nevermind, its PC problem. With other PC it works normal.
use universal naked drivers.
fastboot adb and mtp and ptp working.

After I rooted my N4 a few months ago same thing, cannot get MTP on WinXP
Works fine on my Win7 machines though, its pretty annoying
Tried ALL the fixes I could find, no go
Uninstal all drivers, reconnect N4 let Windows install drivers, it will probably be adb device drivers, then select in device manager adb device drivers update drivers and check install from specific location and on next screen check don't search!
Then you could be able to select mtp. All of this should be done with USB debugging turned off and USB connection as mtp!

Hey Buudy thanks this helps me
So recently my N7 had problems connecting as MTP, it will connect at camera but it wont copy any files to it.
It had no problems connecting before and all of a sudden it stopped. My Gnex will still connect as MTP so i know its not my computer.
I have done a full wipe and put 4.2.2 on the device.
Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong?
Thank you

you can switch between MTP and P2P if you go to settings>storage> then click the menu in the top right corner and change the settings there

If debugging is on try switch it off.
Install the nexus 7 toolkit and install the drivers again

When I connect my Nexus 10 to my Windows 7 computer, the only driver installed is the Android ADB Interface.
I don't get the MTP connection, and my tablet does not show under "My Computer".
On the Nexus 10, I have tried turning debugging on and off, and I tried deleting the driver from the device manager in Windows and reconnecting it and hoping it would re-detect and re-install, but still no go.
Can anyone help me to get the MTP connection working? I think it worked on the initial Android version 4.2, but after the Nexus 10 system updates, it stopped working.
Thank you

You shouldn't have problems if you are on 4.2.2 (as I see on your sign). Did you try unplugging and replugging the Nexus 10 or trying another usb port? As soon as you connect the n10 to the pc, drivers will automatically install and it will show up under my pc. Also, if you go to settings - storage, I think you'll see the option of mtp (once you connect it and the pc recognizes the tablet).
PD: Maybe you have issues with the drivers from your nexus phone? You shouldn't since they should be generic, but who knows...

My phone connects fine. In the end, it looks like something broke in Windows. I did a clean install and it recognized my tablet again. But, I still don't know what broke it.
Back when I was on Windows, I did notice sometimes I'd have to uninstall the ADB driver completely for MTP to show properly. No idea why though.
Works great on Ubuntu though, right out of the box too on raring
Yesterday i wanted to move some pictures from my N4 to my mac by somehow i could startup the Android File Transfer for mac, i checked the MTP in usb setting and check it and unchecked it several times.
I also checked the usb debugging and also checked and unchecked it several times!
I did everything possible from downloading usb diagnosing app to everything to switching usb cables and using more than mac and pc!!!!
Still can access my usb storage !!!
Plus the device is not recognized by the ADB command!!
but its charging OKAY!
Please help!

im on stock rom and unlocked bootloader
try re-installing your device drivers?
I know it's a really common and simple problem but I google it several time and I can't figure out how to solve this.
When I plug the device onto the PC it begin to charge, but I can't browse the folder inside the N4 cause it's not seen by the PC itself.
the N4 has stock rom android 4.3 with stock kernel, unlocked bootloader and root permission.
I tried to:
-use different cables
-use different usb ports (2.0-3-0)
-enable USB debugging
-install MTP driver from microsoft site
-install ADB driver from google nexus toolkit
-put it in PTP mode
-install other driver suggested by another toolkit
when I was on 4.2.2 all worked fine, but since I installed CM 10.1 and android 4.3 I can't see the folder such as music or download.
Someone can help me? this thing is really annoying

I'm having the same issue here and can't get my device to be recognized by various computers. This was after flashing CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) and the problem still persists in CM 11.0 (Android 4.4).
Prior to that the device connected normally as it showed up on device manager and my PC making the USB connect sound.
Is this potentially hardware problem as well?
Thanks in advance.

It won't fix it. I have the same problem since I installed 4.4 (tried many different roms). Usb Debugging + p2p is the only working solution for me.
I tested on Xp/7/8 even with different drivers. But well, I would just use Airdroid.
I have the same problem!

Try different USB wire. If the problem persist; uninstall and reinstall N4 drivers.

Hi badboy47, have tried different USB wires and even different computers. With regards to the N4 drivers, I can't even see the device in device manager when plugged into my PC. Or did you mean uninstalling the universal ADB drivers?
Thanks!
