Since no question is "too stupid", I am hoping someone can help me out. My goal is to unlock SIM and switch carriers to TMOBILE. I have a galaxy S4 I337 4.4.2 with ATT. It has the stock rom. It was never flashed, only rooted.
Samsung -SGH-I337
ATT
Firmware version I337UCUFNC1 (ATT)
4.4.2
The phone is rooted. Here are steps I have done so far.
- Rooted phone
- Ran RegionLockAway app
- Entered the service menu, trying to turn off the SHA256 flag to off, but I don't have that menu. Phone only displays 2 options at Network Lock menu - SHA256 info and flag info
- Requested unlock code from ATT and they denied me stating 2 year contract must be fullfilled first. Phone is 14 months purchased. (BullS#$T)
- Purchased an unlock code for $6 from an advertiser on this site, but was told one couldn't be generated and they did refund my money.
I did search in this forum but did not see any threads addressing the i337 US on my firmware for unlocking the sim on my phone. I would be happy to post anymore info if needed. Thank you.
Regionlockaway works on the MF3 modem. So, install safe strap recovery and flash the MF3 modem(link available in all things Att thread) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595457
You would also have to enable AWS bands - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291589

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it. I am pretty new to this, so I have a question. There are 2 methods. Which would be relevant for my phone? Would it be method 1 since it is 4.4.2? Also, would mine require a downgrade to accomplish what I am trying to do? Thanks again.

You would have to set selinux mode to permissive. You can use selinuxmodechanger app.
You need to install safestrap recovery using the safestrap app. Install version 3.72. Install app. Open the app and click on install recovery.
Safestrap recovery is a modified safe version of TWRP for our phone. It doesnt replace the default recovery but is available in normal boot mode. You would see a splashscreen on bootup with options to enter recovery or continue (using the capacitive menu and back buttons).
You would use safestrap recovery to flash the MF3 modem.
The downgrade method was mentioned due to the fact that we didnt have a root method for kitkat until towelroot came out.

Can someone give clear instructions on how to Network unlock my completely stock Galaxy S4 I337? I've read all sorts of different methods and none of them have worked. So far, I have tried (unsuccessfully) the following:
- Using the *#27663368378# method, does not do anything
- Using the *#0011# method, does not take me to the UMTS menu
- Using the *#9090# method, does not take me to the UMTS menu
- Using the *#*#197328640#*#* method, takes me to the DEBUG SCREEN in the UMTS menu but Option 6 (PHONE CONTROL) is not there
- Using 'Samsung Service Mode' app method (google search for "samservicemode" it's the first XDA link), takes me to the DEBUG SCREEN in the UMTS menu but Option 6 (PHONE CONTROL) is not there
One thread I saw mentioned that the modem / modem drivers have something to do with the menu options not being there but didn't offer much else.
Is there a tried and true proven method to Network unlock an AT&T 32GB Galaxy S4 I337? My phone's basic info is attached.
Call AT$T and have them give you the unlock code. I did this and was the easiest way.

Is there any sure-fire way without root?
I have had the same problem.
I have not found a way to sim unlock my phone.
The easiest way is to call AT&T and tell them that you will be traveling in Europe and need your phone unlocked. AT&T is generally willing to provide an unlock code in this situation.
If you wish to unlock it yourself, have a look at my post that gives you options when the necessary Samsung menu item appears to be missing. It's not usually missing.. just moved to a different sub menu: How to unlock..
.
I tried following steps and my at&t phone is unlocked. Tried with T-mobile sim as well as international sim.
Possible method to SIM unlock on MK2 *must be rooted*
1. Rooted my s4 on MF3 using following method.
New Root Method for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 (OTA MF3 + Safe update to MK2)
HOWTO:
Use a card reader to format the micro SD card to exFAT (FAT32 or other formats does not work) in Windows. I haven't tried Linux or MacOS X, so they may not work.
Download the attached file (Root_for_ATTSG4_FM3.rar) and extract it into the root of your EXTERNAL microSD card using the card reader in Windows. (You can do the extraction using WinRAR or 7-zip).
Put the SD card back to the phone and download the Android Terminal Emulator app.
Open the Terminal Emulator app and run below 3 commands:
Code:
cd /mnt/extSdCard
./pwn
./script.sh
Then, open SuperSU and check everything looks good.
Then open a root app and it should be working properly.
Reboot your device once to confirm root is still working after reboot.
Come back to the post and press the THANKS button

2. Install Recovery using following method. Follow MF3 saferoot method
[RECOVERY LOCKED] Safestrap Recovery v3.71 [2013-12-27 EXFAT Fix]
FOR USERS OF MF3 (TW4.2):
LATEST FILE: Safestrap-JFLTEATT-3.65.apk (updated 2013-11-15)
Main XDA Downloads Page
Mirror 1 (Goo.im): http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/jflteatt/safestrap
HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP?
Requirement: Root
Requirement: Allow APK install from Unknown Sources
Download the Safestrap APK
Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click "Install".
(If updating from an existing Safestrap you might be warned that this will over-write the existing installation. Click the "Yes" equivalent to this message.)
Once installed, open up the Safestrap application as you would any other app.
Agree to the disclaimer that you won't try to sue me and hunt me down with a rifle if you manage to break your phone..
Then use the "Install Recovery" button. You should see the current version down in the lower left corner of the window. And the "Status:" should say "Installed" when you're done.
From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
That's it for the installation! Read below for a brief overview of Safestrap Recovery v3.x

Method 2 (posted by muniz_ri)
Alternatively, I337 owners can flash the MDL modem via Odin to re-gain access to the hidden menu(links to signed, odin flashable modems below) then follow the guide in the OP to unlock your phone. Once completed you can re-flash the MK2 modem. I tested this process on my own stock i337 running stock MK2 and it works but follow at your own risk. Also, my knox warranty flag has been tripped for a long time so I don't know if flashing the MDL modem will trip the flag or not. Someone else can chime in on that. Cheers:

If you don't have an account with at&t they are not going to give you a code. Either try the free unlock or buy a code.
Just a heads up on the free unlock, generally if you try it too many times you will be permanently unable to unlock. So if it doesn't work the first couple of times give up

The free way does not work for me as I am not able to access the Phone Control feature (possibly because of the 4.4.2 OS which I have heard has some features to prevent users from unlocking a device).
I am having the previous owner and at&t customer to call and request the code. Will know whether they will release the code in 48 hours.
If that doesn't work I will have to buy a code. Any recommendations?
I have used cellunlocker.net many times and couldn't be happier (except for the price lol)

your bootloader can not be unlocked. You can not use a custom recovery. The only thing you can do is to use safestrap and ROMs compatible with safestrap.
Search this forum for Hashcode's safestrap thread and read the whole thing and then decide if you want to do it.

actually im trying safestrap right now and i've installed it and it says successfully installed but my status is still inactive and when i tried rebooting to booloader it still says it wont allow it. its like the other one i installed is still on there and i cant write over it, do you know where i could find it and delete it? I'm pretty sure thats my problem is that i have the other one is whats stopping me from going any further.
I tried follow 2 separate quick or auto-root guides for this phone, but after performing the room, I am no longer able to access the device via USB or use the WI-FI on the device. The Wi-Fi gives an invalid sim card as the excuse (I don't have an active one right now), and the USB isn't working even after installing drivers and software from Samsungs site, and messing with the usb menu numbers. USB works in order to root the device, and it worked prior to rooting. HELP?!
Or you flashed the wrong version of CF auto-root or you need to remove Knox.

You probably need to temporarily flash an old modem. Then apply that procedure and then flash back a correct modem.
I have a stock SGH-i337 running android 4.4.4 that is rooted.
I've rolled back to NC1 without success. I'm currently at NJ4.
I need to go from AT&T to T-Mobile.
I cannot access the hidden menus to remove the carrier lock.
None of the methods mentioned here seem to work - *#0011#, *#9090#, etc.
Any ideas?
Install safestrap, then flash the mf3 modem. Then try regionlockaway.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
Did that work? I'm going to be trying this for a phone my daughter bought a couple of days ago. It's an AT&T S4 that she wants to use on Tmobile.
The phone is on 4.4.4 and using I337ucuFNJ4. She used Ebay unlocking service and said they couldn't do it because of money owed on the previous owners account. She gave me the IMEI and it looks clean (as she did check this online and with AT&T before buying).
How can the phone essentially have a clean IMEI if money is still owed on the account? I'll get it from her on Friday and see what I can do.
Ok so I have the s4 rooted with towelroot and flashed the modem back to NJ4. Everything works fine.
Installed busybox then safestrap 3.72 and all of it installed fine. I have SuperSu and did a check root all is fine.
Now do I flash in safestrap the MF3 modem files and install regionlockaway then flash back to NJ4 with Odin? Man I have been searching around for hours to try and get this done. I hate asking for help, but if someone could give a little more detail it would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to brick this thing and was trying to get this down to give it to her in a couple of hours. Thanks guys.
I have a new paper weight.
I've fallen back to my original Galaxy S.
I hope the GS6 arrives soon.
Is unlocking this at&t phone even possible? And what did you do to brick your phone dude? I get the feeling I'm wasting my time with this, that it's not possible and people in the know are having a laugh. I hope that is not the case here.
There is just too much BS on the internet and feel like I'm searching for a needle in a haystack at this point.
Battery failure / short circuit / smoke / bad luck. I have to obtain a battery before I can tell if the damage is permanent.
Got it to work!
Ok I first off sorry for your trouble and hope the phone is not damaged buddy.
I used this technique here http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...aranteed-free-sim-unlock-mk2-nb1-nc1-t2852979
Odin 3.10 was no longer working for me to flash baseband modem so did it all using safestrap. The files that safestrap uses are zip files and use them like they are (don't unzip them to use) and they are about 22 mb's in size.
The trick for me is it didn't work right away. I had to reflash with safestrap my NJ4 modem and reboot.... and put in the correct APN settings for T-Mobile.
So it does work and hope I can help others that fall into the same problem. If you need help just leave a message in this thread and I've subscribed to it so will get an email letting me know.
APN settings - https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-17581
This page came in helpful for grabbing need modem/baseband firmware - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496517
Good luck! Do a backup in Safestrap if you're nervous. You can always start over.
The good news - only the battery was burnt.
What boot loader do I have? getprop ro.bootloader returns I337UCUFNJ4 and getprop ro.boot.baseband returns MDM. I presume that MDM is the bootloader version and I337UCUFNJ4 is the modem version.
I'm concerned that the guides and tips are for older versions of the GS4 that don't work on 4.4.4 and may actually do damage.
Ok glad to hear the good news man. The I337UCUFNJ4 is your modem right now.
A nice little free google play store program to use to get info on your phone is called Phone INFO, download it now please.
This will show you all kinds of information on your phone and what you need is to know is Device Type to know which Safestrap to install. Mine or my daughters was klteatt.
Keep in mind I don't have the phone in hand anymore, gave it back to her last night.
What you'll need to download from the modem page link is the I337UCUFNJ4 and the MF3 modems and keep them in their zip format to use. Create a folder on your external sd card ( mine was EXT SD Downloads ) and put both modem zip files in there.
Another program that needs to be installed is called BusyBox and I just used the free version https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en
You will need this busybox installed for safestrap to work properly. And also have developer Options activated and check install from unknown sources etc etc (you can do a quick search on this one) it's key to have this done and very quick to do.
Now if you follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...aranteed-free-sim-unlock-mk2-nb1-nc1-t2852979
the only thing I did different was flash back the modem MF3 firmware back to the NJ4 that you currently have. APN T-Mobile settings might have auto populated once the card was recognized (I had manually put it in earlier when it didn't work before flashing to NJ4) so not sure.
When safestrap is installed properly it will say so at the top of screen and nothing is greyed out. Do a backup so you can start over if you screw it up. Take like ten minutes or so, no worries.
I've had very little coffee this morning and sorry for being a bit all over the place with this. Let me know how it goes and if you need more help. Good Luck! At least you know it will work, I didn't.
I used Safestrap-JFLTE-3.72-kk-B01 (sorry for confusion forget the klteatt, sorry)------- phone INFO - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo&hl=en
I followed the instructions very carefully. The problem is that I no longer have cellular service on any network.
I've rebooted, tried to reflash each of the modems. NJ4 flash fails while the MF3 flash seems to work, but I still have no cellular service.
Phone info shows bootloader NJ4 and baseband MF3
hmmm makes it a bit harder not having the phone with me anymore. You did the developers options correctly?
Perhaps use Play Store and download 'SELinux Mode Changer' to see if it will allow you to install through Safestrap the NJ4 modem firmware?

Thanks! The phone is now working but I have to download, install and configure all (~150) of my apps again.
It will take a couple of days to pair all the Bluetooth devices (plus travel). I wish I'd known that this was a complete reset. I could have captured many of the apps, network locations and configurations. That said, I don't have to buy a new phone.

I was wondering if there was an accurate, safe root method for the OF4 baseband and build?
It's a Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy S4 SM-S975L straight from the local WalMart.
The strange thing is, the kernel version is dated Tuesday, June 16th.
It looks like this thing comes fresh without NB1 (which I'm not sure will work with this hardware configuration, so hesitant to Odin flash).
Bootloader says WRITE PROTECTION ON. It's obviously locked. But it's been made aware of a different firmware flash will trip knox. (Will Triangle Away fix?)
Towelroot v3 says "not supported" so: does not work with override code 1337 0 1 7380 4 0 (or something, I Googled it, eh...)
Towelroot v1 stops responding on "Make it ra1n" tap.
VRoot failure trick, then Towelroot at the bugged out rebooted OS with the error message makes Towelroot v1 reboot the phone, but alas, no root. This is one step further.
Kingroot does not work.
VRoot can get Towelroot to reboot the phone, but nothing happens.
Again, this seems to be a very recent baseband and build. Dated June 16th, 2015.
I can attempt an Odin flash if that is theoretically possible from Download mode but it will trip Knox and set the warranty bit.
Suggestions and safe STOCK ROM to flash?
If not an exploit, that's easier. Thanks. Looks like this new kernel's been patched.

Thank you! Looks like most of the T-Mobile ROMS work. But hesitant to install them. Good to know you can do this from the OF4 build! Flash to Odin Fenny ROM, flash Safestrap for T-Mobile variant, then flash any T-Mobile ROM that works. I need to make a backup of my modem, though after the Odin flash. Just in case.
I hope this helps others.
Too bad about the warranty bit, though.
Also would like to add you gotta flash the kernel over the ROMs. Koontsz kernel. Otherwise you get a brick

You don't need safestrap. That's not for your phone. It's only for the T-mobile phone. Also just flash the TWRP and then the rom you want. You don't need to first flash that Fenny rom.
