Hello everyone,
I have Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Omega Rom android 4.4.2
I installed an anti theft app called 'Android Lost'.
I installed it on my phone and went on to their site to try out some of the commands after it had registered with my google account and whatever else it does. I sent a command to my phone to lock it with a pin. My phone received the command but it didn't do what it was supposed to do. It removed the pattern lock that was on my phone and left it open to unlock without any sort of password or pin. I tried the command again and it did not work.
I gave up as I was in a rush to leave and left the house. I then tried to set a pin on my phone again and the option wasn't grayed out or anything but when I selected it and set the pin, my phone would freeze and then after a minute it would unfreeze but "swipe" would be selected. I was able to set a pattern but nothing higher security than that. Also, even when pattern was selected and I tried to set a pin, it would set it back to "swipe". I also noticed that now I am always getting a message that says "my sd card can now be removed safely" even when I didn't select for it to be removed.
I uninstalled the app and it unregistered me from the servers and all of that, but everything is still the same. Still getting the sd card message, and still can't set a pin.
I have tried the method of incorrectly entering my pattern and using google to change to a pin, that didn't work, just set it to swipe and the sd card message was still appearing.
I also tried clearing all credentials like someone mentioned, but the option is grayed out so I can't select it, and my sd card isn't encrypted and either is my internal storage.
I even went as far as manually going to each credential and disabling it, this did not fix anything either.
Today after not having any replies on the Android Lost website, I decided to factory restore my phone after backing everything up.
This, to my surprise, still did not fix the problem. Now I have a wiped phone and still can't set a pin, and am still being told my SD card can be safely removed.
I tried factory restoring several times, still no fix. I have also tried reflashing my rom, still have same issue.
I am so lost at what to do, maybe there is a cache I can clear or something on top of restoring the phone to clear the credentials as they all seem to be the same still after restore, or maybe it has something to do with my google account, or a server still sending commands to my phone or has set a lock on it. I'm not sure.
Thanks for reading, sorry if it was a bit long, I rarely post to forums as I can usually solve problems by myself by searching.
All help appreciated!
EDIT: I have been taking notes when flashing and factory resetting. The security credentials are staying the same even after each wipe and reflash. Is there any way to clear these manually as the button is still greyed out to clear them? I'm wondering if this has anything to do with not being able to set a pin and ejecting my sd card.
I ran into same issue today, couldn't enable PIN. I use stock NF4, rooted. Still haven't found the cause for that.
EDIT: Found this.

mine was having the same issue aswell, when i try to setup a pin or a pattern for my security, itll just freeze for a while and still swipe option has been chosen and when i try it once more,,it does freeze again and my sd card was already unmounted.,what was that thing happen,is it becoz of the root and security policy builds in the new update?

Have you solved this problem? I have exactly the same

Phone facts:
SPH- L720.
CF Auto Root.
Firmware NG2, installed in December.
Stock recovery.
No major changes to any internal folders since December.
The problem:
The stock ringtones are hiding somewhere on the phone.
Since I hate them I removed all of the stock ringtones, notifications, and alarms from their folders, and replaced them with mine. I did this in December and it worked fine.
Yesterday, though, I got a phone call that rang with a stock tone. I spent the next 4 hours checking all settings, looking for the tone, but found nothing, not in the phone, nor the sd card. All searches show everything is fine, but test calls ring with the stock tone.
I even did a factory reset, without flashing the ROM, and the stock tone still rings without showing.
Cleared cache through recovery, no effect.
Is there a place where the files could be hidden? Is there a way for files to ignore Root Explorer's "Show Hidden Files" setting?
I appreciate any help.

bilgerryan, I'm sorry I failed to make this clear:
I deleted them from that location, hence my asking if there was a place where they are hidden.
They are NOT in system/media/sounds/Ringtones, because the only thing in there is a ringtone I created.
The only stock sounds in the sounds folder are the ones related to power, the deleting of which would cause other problems.

Yes, the stock ringtone and notification I believe are built into SecSettings, but if you have something else set as the default it shouldn't matter.
Shouldn't matter, but that is the reason for this thread.
Please assume I know enough about what I'm doing that everything I said is accurate, meaning that this is not a normal occurrence.
I'll look into SecSettings. Thanks.
Hi, does anyone know if the phone is encrypted or is there an option to do so?
Marshmallow by default is encrypted, but I think with Samsung you have to do it in the Knox environment.
The sd ?
Yes there is an option for encryption. Also Knox adds an extra layer of security above it.

Bump. I'd like to confirm if this device is already encrypted. From what I can see in Lock Screen and security, I can only encrypt my SD card (useful) and when I tap Protect encrypted data, it states it's already encrypted but offers to "require screen lock to decrypt data when device turns on".

I have an S7 edge and was just trying to find how to do it. It just has the SD encryption options, so I thought it might be by default for the main storage. Good to have this confirmed. Thanks.

You can if you do a clean wipe and flash dm-verity to disable it - which is required for a usable internal storage partition in TWRP and xposed
Inb4, necropost.
I and it would seem a lot of users are missing the option to set a password before the phone boots into Android. The ‘Protect Encrypted Data’ option in 'Lock screen and security' section doesn't show. Does any one know if this has been removed? Can anyone confirm that the S7 (edge) is still encrypted? Surely you can prevent the phone from booting into the OS until you've entered credentials? To prevent lock screen exploits.
Just curious for your input.

Thanks for the reply.
Any one from the UK have this setting still?
I've been reading that there is a possibility that recent (end of Dec 2016) UK law change could have caused this to be removed from phones sold in the UK hence digging up this thread.
I'm still waiting for the 7.0 update OTA as I'm still on 6.0.1 but I may try and update myself to 7.0 to see if the option returns.

Hi there,
Had the same question today but I found the option is there and has been renamed to "Secure Startup" and is just above the "Decrypt SD card" option (Or Encrypt SD card if you haven't already enabled SD card encryption).
Samsung Galaxy S 7 SM-G930F
Android 7.0
I'm using the default "partition based" encryption that came with the device. Afaik encryption is done using the standard password of "default_password", because thats what twrp can decrypt with. In the event my device were to get lost or stolen or something, with the standard password it's pretty easy for anyone to get access to all the data on the device. Now my question is, how do i change the pw from "default_password" to one of my choosing. Preferably without losing data.
Settings > Security > Screen Lock > Password should ask you if you want secure start up; saying yes should change that password (without data loss).
Advisable to have a backup, of course. There is no going back if you e.g., forget the password.

I don't want to secure device start up with a password or pin, requiring me to enter it to boot up. I want to change the password used to ENCRYPT the device.

Pro tip: Try Google so you don't have to wait 6 days, or in case no one knows. Here's a few link I found, hope these help.
First result;
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.nick.cryptfs.passwdmanager (seems to not be updated for newer OS versions, I'd advise other methods first. Use at your own risk).
2nd;
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.xd...-change-your-android-encryption-password/amp/
3rd;
https://copperhead.co/blog/2015/07/08/android-encryption-password
4th;
http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/88845/how-to-change-encryption-password-android-5-0
From what I'm seeing in those results, he's right. Changing the lock screen / boot pin, pass or pattern will change it.
Well i went the settings way, then set screen lock back to pin. So encryption pw should be changed. What's the quickest method to verify it actually is? Something through TWRP possible?

TWRP will use the same pin then. If you enter the wrong password you'll see an error about unable to decrypt data. Entering the pin will let you in. Typing "default_password" should be invalid now, it won't work.
Well doesn't look like it, just went into twrp 3.0.2-2. Tapped hamburger icon in bottom right, saw this

I don't know if you understand dutch but 'standaardwachtwoord' means 'default password'. Quests what I'm asking is what can I do in TWRP to test the password? When going into twrp it did NOT ask me for my pin NOR my password.
Flashed TWRP 3.0.3, started a nandroid backup. Same thing. Line 5 'standaardwachtwoord', 'successfully decrypted using default password'
Sent from my Nexus 7 (2013) with Tapatalk
I cannot access my data from TWRP using "default_password"
"Failed to decrypt data"
I must use my pin. Have you set it to require pin on boot? TWRP won't let you in with the default password if you do.
Aside from that, you could try the ADB shell commands in one of the other links above, but I've never done that before.
No, I haven't set it to require pin nor pass on boot. Only as screenlock.
Sent from my Nexus 6P with Tapatalk.
The problem is now that TWRP refuses to accept it? ""Unable to mount data". Using twrp 3.0.3." Or am i reading this incorrectly. Every time i go into TWRP i'm prompted for my password. Entering seemsthe pw i set does get me into TWRP? Is this normal behavior after changing encryption password or a bug. I've only had my Nexus 6P a couple months now and only recently found out about the "default_password" used for encryption. So as a security measure i changed it. Then set screenlock back to pin.
So is this normal behaviour after changing pw to a custom one instead of the default one?
Hello everyone,
So I recently updated my device to OxygenOS 5.0 Open Beta 3, and for quite some time, I still have this issue happening to me it's that my Google Assistant wasn't working back when it was (I think it was 4.5.15)
so I hoped the update to Open Beta 1 Oreo would fix that and when I got into the Beta, I still had the issue so I tried to disable it and just try to set it up again, now when I did try to set it up, everytime I tap on the button in Assistant Settings > Phone
The thing keeps on loading with the circle and then it shows the error that it has some trouble connecting.
I don't know what to do, there's Open Beta 2 and now it's 3 but the issue still isn't fixed, it's annoying.
Any possible solution to this? I'd attach the screenshot but it doesn't really say much.

First of all, upgrade to Official OOS 5, I also got this error while trying to setup my Philips Hue lights rooms, but the settings were saved even with this error.
And try with Wifi connection, not 3G/4G.
I've had the same problem before but with xXx's 9.0 Oreo. I noticed Google Play Services force closing during the initial setup routine. I was able to proceed thru the setup bypassing an update play services option. All worked fine except that I can't access Google assistant settings, throwing up this "Trouble connecting" error. Also previous paid apps aren't recognized in Play store. Clean flashing the ROM (in my case xXx's), full wipe with format data fixed the problem. Backup everything beforehand.

The thing pops up even when I'm on WiFi or something. I think I have to clean install everything like suggested in the next reply. I think I'll upgrade to the OTA with link you've provided.

So I guess this is what I'll have to do!
I am on stock 8.0 after the update during a call the phone buzzed and made a loud sound like a siren. After the crash I used it and got message of abnormal restart. I decided to hard reset it. The phone buzzed for about 30 seconds at least and then booted giving me an error uDove to send to HTC. I sent the error and updated all apps to set up.
1. Since then whenever I wake up the phone with the fingerprint or open an app the current window goes white and gets minimised as an app would do. Or as if a pop up goes on and gets closed by an adblock (in desktop).
2. I noticed also lags in performance and battery drain.
All my apps are basic and from play store (major publishers and no games at all) With HTC support I used the phone in Safe mode and no problems where observed. I thought it was htc sense update that was causing the issues however it is not the case. I am lost and do not know what to do. The phone is annoying to use and 4 hard and soft resets did not improve anything.
I ran every check with the HTC utility and nothing significant was reported (all passed ok), During the following hardresets the bootloader gives error

Looks like partitions map is damaged (hard to read the photo). My educated guess is that you either get a RUU from HTC and let the phone recover everything fresh or unlock boot loader and install custom ROM.
Can you use superuser rights via adb in the HTC recovery mode?

HTC is sadly ignoring/abandon the U Ultra. Pity.
NVM
RUU is ROM Update Utility - it is an HTC format for update packages. Sadly, Oreo hasn't been made available by HTC.
Since (presuming) you are still under warranty (no unlocked bootloader etc.) I advise to hit the HTC service center and tell them that their OTA went wrong.
Alternatively I could only think of unlocking the bootloader and doing the fix yourself.
Whitch CID do You have? Is it single sim or dual?
I as an update the phone is getting worse the more I use it. I screen blacks out for few seconds and then back to normal. Something like voltage issues. If anyone knows the UK repair service I would appreciate the details. They are not responding e-mails and chat is not helpful at all.
It is bought with UK plug so I assume it is the ones in UK?

So. You have nothing to lose. Try to copy OTA to SD card. Clear Cache and Apply update from SD Card. Maybe it Will help...

Or downgrade to Nougat, then try with OTA again.
Hello everyone, after buying a new device (huawei) and after 4 visits to the repair center my phone seems to be replaced with another one. unfortunately the battery was changed and it is worse than ever (after a hard reset it says it was last fully charged 223days ago.
I solved the problem by doing a hard reset and not updating the google app. My last reported version (installed by HTC) is 7.17.28.21.arm64 (my device is HTC U ULTRA but same problem). After this everything else runs smoothly etc.
I believe it relates to new features of the app that change completely how it manages the device
• Use voice commands while navigating – even when your device has no connection. Try saying "cancel my navigation" "what's my ETA?" or "what's my next turn?"
• Weak connection? If your search fails, the Google app will deliver you results once you regain connection.
• Troubleshoot connectivity issues with more helpful error cards when your search fails because your device is offline
• New customization options available for cards in your feed
