Rom delvelopment - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody.
Im looking into delveloping a custom ROM for the SM-G900F and maybe H as well as i have alot of time on my hands and want to utilise it somehow.
This will be first attempt as rom delvelopment so dont want to say its going to be as perfect as the ones we see already (Alliance, PhonieX or the unoffical SLIMROM or CM).
The reason im posting on here is to find out ideas of what people would like to see in this rom, weather it customizing tools, camera apps, social networking and such like.
All input would be greatful as i want to share my completed rom will all S5 users who use XDA (for all your android needs).
Thank you and hope we have some good ideas and able to produce something clean fast and soon.

which custom firmware?

I've had my N1 for .. almost a year now.. considering custom firmware :] which do you guys suggest is the best? pros/cons to each? which one do you guys find that run the best on the N1? i tried asking a friend but hes never had the N1 so he cant say much... what best to ask this but here with you guys
there's not much i really look for my phone to have but better and fast performance... i want to be able to disable data but be able to receive AND send MMS (currently with stock 2.3.4, i cant manage to figure out to send too... using T-mobile... searching all over the place but cant find it) the ever re-occuring space issue... i have like very limited apps... but im always down to like 20mb internal space >=[ ... and is there something that would help me save texts and be able to see them on the computer in its each individual conversation? currently using SMS backup & restore.. is there anything better than that? or would using a custom firmware make it faster? xD i currently have 20K+ texts... when i talk to someone who has 6k+ for themselves, it takes a few seconds for anything to show up... then if i send texts, it takes a few seconds to come up and start sending...
i looked at the development part of the N1 section.. theres SOOO many roms... x_X
only a word: cyanogenmod. this is the best custom firmware for n1, imho. with this, the performance are comparable to stock desire hd, it's simply very fast
N1 -- Roms
Hi!!
If you want the best results use cyanogenmod
if you want to try something different and also very good use MIUI
good luck!!
Oh, a very innovating question. There haven't been 20000 threads on the subject already...
Well, your choice is between CyanogenMod and MIUI, in many of their variants. Check everything and decide yourself. Unfortunately, proper Sense ROMs aren't available for N1.
So you want to able to send and receive mms without data. Maybe you should actually search for how mms actually works instead.
On that note. Can anybody tell me how I can get on the internet with out using a active internet connection?

Blimey, there's no need to crucify the guy just for asking a question!
Well I've enjoyed any ROMS made by Evil, his sense roms are really good. For MIUI roms, I find Rodriguez a quality dev, he looks after his roms well. If you go by the reputation of the dev, you can more or less be sure you're getting a decent rom that'll be well supported. That's what's important to me. But I tend to agree with the others too, cyanogenmod is awesome, gives you so much functionality too.

Help me to choose a ROM

Hi guys,
I'm tired to change ROM every day. ICS, MIUIv4, CM7, AOKP, ... I can't deiced.
My usages:
* Just 2G networks
* Listen music (Speaker)
* Text (SMS) and Yahoo IM
* Call (few)
* Gaming (not 3Ds and heavy games)
* I can't stay with Lags and I rather fast responsibility
* Battery is not very Important but It's important
* All app I need is about 150
* A few web browsing (WiFi)
* A little GPS
What are u recommend me?
Choosing a ROM is something personal. In my opinion don't change every day! Stay with a specific ROM at least 4-5 days, because you won't have a good knowledge of how the ROM works.
Also i think 150 apps is too much
If you still want a specific ROM i can suggest you MIUI MintBerry or CM7 nightly or the new CM7.2RC.
150 apps?! Holy crap why dont you just get a stock rom there always stable and cover everything you need
** Against the famine and the crowN**
Use cyano for tomorrow 1.4. It's fast, stable and great battery life
Yiiha
Hey man! I recomend you CM9 is pretty stable and fast, ICS my friend lol
And if you want it as smooth as silk take the Icy Glitch kernel, you can overclock and Live OC, I have it with no Live OC (I don't want UV) and at 1,5GHz.
Believe me, reaaally fast and smooth.
But whatever, I agree ngphobos, to choose a rom is something really personal, it depends of your style of ROM.
So good luck!
PD: yeah, i believe that 150 apps is too much xD
I personally like darkyrom 10.4.2 and it looks like we use the phone for about the same stuff but I only have 70 it so apps. I reccomend trying it if you don't like it then try something else but once you go darky its hard to go back. Lol

+1
Slim ICS + Semaphore 0.9.5b.
Otherwise AOKP if you want the extra apps etc already installed from stock.
I can only recommend AOKP BlueLightning v1.1.0 or (if you prefer black) v1.1.1. Then flash Semaphore 9.9.5b and sit back and enjoy. I fell in love with my SGS again!
Try to using teamhacksing ics (cm9) alpha build 17. I'm using it too. Running so smooth
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Based on those requirements, I'd recommend Froyo ZSJPK. Before you dismiss it just because it's froyo, I strongly implore you to check the thread out and perhaps even try the rom for at least a day.
Ohh so if your talking froyo roms its either darkys 9.5 or insanity.. no questions asked
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
I'm using Amestris Persian Gulf 7.2, it's great for daily use (no reboots, freezes, SoD, etc) and it covers all the stuff you need, also, it's based in official Samsung ROM, so, the GPS works flawlessly.
Cheers
Greetings Guys,
I didn't want to start another thread on the same question & clutter your forums so I thought I would just post my question here. Sorry if this seems like a thread jacking so if its against forum rules then a Mod can just delete it for me.
I too have a SGS & my question is the same. My phone is stock & has always been & I still love my device to bits. Its just that I am getting a little tired & need a change but before I spend a lot of money on another new device, I thought I would try to change the experience of this device first.
I am sure if I choose the right ROM I will be good with it for a few more months.
Since ICS will not be officially launched for my phone I thought about trying it out. I only have about 60 apps on my phone but I could easily cut it down to 45 or so. I mainly use:
Internet
WiFi
Calling
Messaging (WhatsApp)
I don't want anything too big either, I prefer something that weighs in a few MB less then the main stream stuff cos less is more for me.
What process would I need to follow & what do you guys suggest, perhaps a reason too would be awesome?
Thanks & I can see I am going to enjoy this community.
Vogie, for you normal use, the best you can do is to flash a stock rom, JVU is my advice, and put cf-root kernel. That's all. Your phone should work as well as you want/need.
Don't do any complicate thing.

Hi proxuser
what are the key unique features of this ROM ?
i already tried carbon rom
@proxuser
Hi, topic, im a noob so i cant yet post in the developement section, I tested your latest kernel, flashed:
Kartal-JB4.3-AOSP-eur_3g-10.29.2013.zip
and my device didnt want to start up. It hung on the samsung startup screen.
I'm using using cm10.2 official nightlies 25 October rom. I have previously flashed your 1.9ghz overclocking kernel, it worked fine.
Had to restore my backup
Ive got the 3g handset

Hope you get BLN working. Have you considered Active Notifications alternatively? Might even be the better solution.

Don't see the benefit in that. You could just use Apps like NoLED or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greatbytes.activenotifications&hl=de
benefit of BLN is less battery drain
Thanks for the advice. I already gave them a try. Knock2 ist too far removed from a stock like appearance, NoLED has a hughe battery drain and DN has had a known issue with low res icons for several versions on the S4 mini, which is still not fixed.
Besides, the big advantage would be a tighter integration of the functionality with the rom hence potentially lowering battery consumption even further and resolving problems with unlocking the phone, those apps tend to run into.
I am using: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ledblinker.pro&hl=en
I compared it to NoLED and it drains less battery.
Try it
Turns out, we had Active Notifications all along. It can be found in the display settings.

[Q] Why are there no slim roms?

This is a quick little question. I haven't been able to find a ROM that was just a smooth minimal debloated ROM. X-Note is full of a tonne of crap I don't need and it doesn't look like someone has made a 'stock close to AOSP' ROM. No offense meant, they're just not for me. Anyone have any good news? I might have to make one then...

Use debloater on a normal stock ROM, or just flash Cyanogen. Cyanogen is as slim as your girlfriend in thirty saunas.

Thanks guys, I did the same but I debloated manually. I think there'd be a place for an ASOP feeling ROM. Perhaps I'll make a pack or something in the future.

I would suggest flashing alexndrs Rom. I have manually debloated this, very heavily.. all with root explorer followed by a data wipe. Over 850mb free in system.

Hello, mind to share it?
I am also trying to manually delete as much as possible.
All I need is the camera, the clock and the popup music player.
All other things could go, including the launcher as I have many paid apps for the several tasks.
I also do not use the pen.
Tried slim roms and debloater, also cm based ones but want to have the samsung base.
Thanks,
Best regards

Most of the time I also debloat manually but I give a try on the note 3 cleaner of cooolboy since most of the apps that can be debloat on his mod is just the same as my debloated apps.

How about before installing the custom rom that you will use, check the apps that will be installed on the zip file. Extract it first and check on the system/data. You can delete some apps but be sure you know what to delete.
debloating threads are really user unfriendly and have nearly no research on.
A lot of apps that are removed cause incompatibility with other apps. You can remove the non-sense My Magazine, and the built-in Email will go havoc, and you cant just offer an alternative mail client in that case.
If somebody slimmed down the stock firmwares, that would do a lot of ppl favours.

How is this possible without manually typing out 175 - 200 apk names ? No way i have the patience for typing them all out haha.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
I think the reason there are no "slim" roms is because you will lose some of the features that make the Note range unique. Touchwiz is vital to those features.
By going AOSP - it will basically be a big Nexus.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using xda app-developers app
actually, there are cyanogen mod for n9005. but you will loose samsung apps and its feature such as s note etc.
Sent from my SM-N900 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There are alternatives such as Papyrus instead of S-Note (I like it better). I think the only reasons this phone is unique is the Pen (works in CM) and the size. So, a slim ROM makes sense as there's a lot of crap that Samsung adds that is not very useful.
I am using this ROM, like the OP I wanted all that crap of my phone. So found this here. I'll let the thread speak for itself...
I'd love to have a ROM like that as well. It would be especially great if you could decide for yourself what you install. Basically I want it as slim as possible so that the OS itself runs without errors but I don't want basic stuff like email, calculator and all that stuff either because the stock apps are usually crap compared to apps from the play store. I use a different calendar, email, calculator, music player, video player... so I just want a clean base OS to build on without all that stuff I never use anyways.

That would be nice but some applications rely upon others so you cannot remove some stuff because other things won't work.

might make a 4.4 rom for the p600 if anyone is interested

there isnt much development being done for this device lately. ive only ever built a few roms for myself, but if there is enough demand and i can get some features that people want, i could get in the game. i might need a little help and it might be a little slow for releases though, as im still in school. anyone interested?

What I would like to see are some features I know from cyanogenmod:
Close apps with long press back key
Customizable pull down menu
Screenshots via on/off menu
Maybe a better music player
I have lots of ideas
Very interested! How about a dark theme? All black backgrounds instead of the ugly touchwiz white???????????
Its realy not that easy to change from wihte to black BG. Also tekst switch needed.and the fun part comes now...basicly for best result needed for ALL systemapps.

A good minimal rom debloated and with just a few tweaks sounds perfect!

What about active display, could it be implemented "natively" like some aosp roms (Omni's is superb) ?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
A fully debloated kk-Rom was great with a good tweaked Kernel with OC/UV-features. Than the ability to chance the screen-resolution to fullHD for better gaming-performance like in SDBAGS Cromi-X Rom for Asus tf701t. ES File-Explorer, Xposed Framework as system apps. Than the old webkit-android-browser(aosp) with bookmark-sync, like in Scroslers Clean-Rom.
And I think there is a lot more to make KK better.
sorry guys, project is cancelled. hanspampel made a 4.4 kat rom which is almost exactly what i would have done. i highly recommend checking it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2725121
i might take up the cause again if i have time, but im not sure when that will be
