Throwing in the towel, I need help. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey all, I just acquired the SGH-I337 as an upgrade to my Galaxy S3. I can not for the life of me get a custom ROM running on it. My goal is SlimKAT because I like the ROM and have been using it on every phone since my Samsung Vibrant. Any time I'm flashing something in ODIN that has anything to do with ABOOT, it fails, soft bricks the device, and I have to reflash in ODIN all over again.
Please let me know what information I can provide to help with this. I've never had so much trouble with a phone before.

Please tell us the firmware of your phone (baseband, modem, etc..)
I337 has locked bootloader if your firmware is MF3 and above (MK2, NB1, NC1). You have to use the safestrap as a recovery if you want to flash the custom roms. If you want to flash SlimKAT you have to the SlimKAT safestrap version if they have one.

If he had to use Safestrap he can't use Slimkat as it's AOSP and he can't change the kernel. Chances are if he was getting issues flashing aboot then he's on a newer version. Confirm it in the about phone section of the settings though.

You can't go back to older bootloaders ever. Sounds like you are updated to something that you can't flash custom anything to. So safestrap is the only way to go with modded touchwiz based roms.

I was able to successfully unbrick the phone by using Odin to get it to MK2, although Wifi didn't work. Now I'm trying to get it back to the latest firmware so that I can sell it.
UPDATE!
Phone had been successfully reflashed to firmware NB1, with everything seemingly working. This phone seems so much more complicated than the S3 was, thanks locked bootloader.

Does it matter if I use the rootable version?

I would use the non root one then let phone take the NC1 OTA update.
That shod give you a clean slate to sell the phone or you can root NC1 with towelroot

3.DOWNLOAD AND EXTRACT I337MK2_Combined_Odin_Tar FILES
4.START ODIN AND FOLLOW IN ORDER WHERE EACH FILE SHOULD GO INTO ODIN SLOT....
I need confirmation if the above instruction is correct to get the latest update for Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T i337 model?
You're currently on mdl firmware. This firmware allows you to put on a custom recovery and flash roms. Are you sure you want to update? You will no longer have the ability to put on a custom recovery.

Yes to all your question.....i337MK2 tar md5 contain 4 seperated files ( first released ) follow the image guide where u have to place into ODIN SLOT ....the one that said combined ALL IN ONE ( newest released ) mean that u just flash into PDA ODIN SLOT ONLY.....just follow that guide on second post it would get u to latest ATT MK2 4.3 firmware. But like @jd1639 said with MDL firmware u can install anything even 4.4.2 rom and also there is alot of custom stock rom without ATT bloatware out there that u can install .....goodluck and PM me if u need more help. FYI if u got helped by someone please hit THANK button to show your appreciation ....:good::good:
I'll update my S4 to the latest update and you can send me yours. I'd kill for mdl firmware...

That is my another question regarding ATT bloatware? Will the combined TAR file contain the ATT bloatware?
Is there a way I can remove the ATT bloatware after I have upgraded the phone, as I find the ATT bloatware annoying

Yes it contains all the bloatware, another reason not to upgrade and flash custom roms.
Edit, it has not been mentioned yet but one you upgrade you can not go back to a previous firmware.
When I upgrade to MK2, does this mean I will need to perform factory reset and all my existing app will be gone or will the app remain on the phone even after the upgrade.
I will do the backup before the upgrade but at the moment when I connect the Phone to the PC, it would mot pick up so maybe I will need the latest software driver, is that correct? I have the same problem with Kies which does not recognise when phone is connected.
Any suggestion would be great.

Not always, most times a factory reset is needed to clear the phone of old apps and data. Root, is lost, but apps that require root can still be present which can become a problem when root is no longer available.

Why doesn't your friend flash a custom rom instead
He wants a stock touchwiz ROM. If their is a custom ROM based on the latest firmware then by all means direct me to it and I'll flash that for him. Thanks.

He's on mdl which allows a custom recovery and easy flashing of roms. If he upgrades to mk2, the latest, he'll lose that ability. Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47713264
Right, we have a custom recovery and an unlocked boot loader and I flashed an older build of that Google edition ROM, but he just really wants the ability to move his apps2sd. I didn't see a mention of the apps2sd feature in the change logs. Thanks for replying so quickly.

[Q] OTA 4.4 back to 4.3

Can someone help me take my S4 back to 4.3? I got the OTA update for 4.4 yesterday morning and have had nothing but problems. Terrible battery life (40% down in 3 hours with little to no use) WiFi wont turn on thanks to this piece of junk Knox software. So before I dump Samsung completely for a Moto X or Nexus, can someone help me downgrade from 4.4 back to 4.3 where I had no problems?
Were you totally stock before the OTA? If you still have warranty left, I would bring it in to a Sprint store and *****.
If not, you can try one of 2 things. 1) flash the NAE tar file using odin to see if that fixes your issues or 2) flash the MK2 tar file to bring you back to 4.3

I went Cyanogen at one point, didn't like it, and flashed back to stock. When the OTA hit I was rooted but had made no changes from stock, not even an uninstall of a Samsung app. I am backing things up now to flash the NAE again, but I want a version without this Knox garbage in it. Is there such thing?
I read that you can't flash back with Odin from 4.4 to 4.3 so I don't know how to do option 2 at this point.

You're saying your bootloader went back to MK2 after this? Didn't think that was possible. I've had nothing but stupid little issues myself after using Odin to flash the phone to NAE. I've done factory resets... Completely wiped the phone in Philz. Tried KToonsez kernel as well and stock NAE just sux! I'll probably just flash Liquid Smooth back on it, was only trying to stick with stock NAE for stability and camera , that phone is my girls and she doesn't have the patience for all the bugs that come with custom Roms lol
Anyways just want to confirm that with you. Thanks

I don't know if that is possible for those of us rocking triband. Obviously we cannot use the Mk2 modem or rom. In any event, I upgraded to 4.4.2 on my new L720T and regretted it, but now I'v" managed to install twrp and rooted it and the rom settled down after a few days. At first, horrible battery use but now its amazing. My battery reads 75 percent after 14 hours and that's quite good enough. The only issue I still face is the SD card thing, but that only seems to apply third party software as I can move files directly from internal to external memory using the stock files app that comes with android.
i dont know about triband. i dont have one and im not going to pretend im a smart dev because thats also not true.. i HAVE ODIN 4.4.2 THEN turned around and ODIN 4.3 due to something i didnt like...im not sure if it changes the bootloader or not, i dont even check. i have only tried this with mk2 to nae.. when i purchesed my device it came with mk2 so i have never tinkerd with the other bootloaders. if you have something other then mk2 id ask a dev befor doing anything. like i said it works for me as long as i flash the modem FIRST that corrisponds to the build. ( mk2 or nae )...and in some cases if the wifi is borked on nae, iv had to flash the modem again after instalation of the rom.. i cant explain why any of this happens....

But that's interesting you can go back to mk2 after being on nae. I figured that was not possible. But if you didn't get any fails in Odin while downgrading that's great. Maybe I'll get ballsy and try this later.

I recently updated to 4.4.2 KitKat on my AT&T Galaxy S4. I am rooted with safestrap installed. For those rooted with Loki+Motochopper I would suggest buying your own NEW screen and replacing then. Better than being locked down tight and not have full control of your own personal device. I sent mine to a phone repair website and they did some JTAG magic stuff and downgraded mine to 4.2, which is what it came with when I got it. I don't recall the website, but if you search around I'm sure you'll find something. It cost about $50.

[Q] Is Supersu The Best Way To Unroot When Flashing Firmware Isn't Possible?

I need to be able to unroot my phone so that I can take it in for repair.
Apparently my phone (SGH-I337 - AT&T) cannot have firmware flashed to it in order to unroot it (apparently because I allowed an update to be installed a while back when I shoudn't have).
There's a lot of people recommending SuperSU for unrooting but the recommended procedures vary (primarily when it comes to which files you should manually delete and when exactly you should delete them) and there's also no mention of whether or not all traces of rooting are removed.
I'm really worried that I'll bring the phone in and they'll find something which indicates that the phone was rooted.
Note: I don't have any custom recovery or firmware installed. The phone has only been rooted using towelroot. Nothing else.

Wow, thank you very much for that info.! I really appreciate it.
Every set of instructions I had come across told me to flash either the I337ATTAMDL firmware or the I337UCUAMDB firmware, and attempting to flash either of those resulted in a FAIL in Odin.
Before I proceed, can you confirm that flashing this NB1 firmware will not trip KNOX or affect a flash counter (requiring a reset with TriangleAway)?
Also, real quick while I have your attention, do you happen to know of any custom firmware/ROM (eg, a version of CyanogenMod or something similar) that I can flash to my phone? Or am I completely out of luck in that department?

Flashing nb1 will not trip Knox. You're out of luck with cm. With the locked bootloader you can only flash touch wiz based roms using safestrap

Flashing the NB1 file worked perfectly.
Thanks again! I really appreciate it.
