We have a few apps that we developed for local daily deals in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Canada.
I understand that for our website equivalent, a big part of SEO is making sure our targeted keywords are on-page and the content matches the keywords. However for apps, since there's no on-page SEO, how do we get our app to be shown in results for targeted keywords?
The main difference I see is that Google has a web crawler to go through my website and evaluate the content, index it correctly etc. For our apps, I don't imagine Google has an app crawler that will go through the apps and do the same?
Also are there any strategies that are relatively easy and cost-free to do that pertain specifically to SEO for apps?

Judging by some of my searches on the Play Store, I think it has to do with your app name and the stuff in the description. My developer name is Acela Apps and when I search for it I get train apps because their description say they have the schedule for the Acela Amtrak train. This is why you should include as much about your app as you can in the description.

Yeah that's what I noticed as well. Pretty much the only place that matters to put relevant targeted keywords is in the app title, or google play description itself. Since there's no Google crawler to judge the content of the app, I think this is where the Google Play user reviews matter a lot.
Not too long ago Google allowed you to make anonymous reviews and what not, and scammers would just boost their own app ratings by making fake accounts, or even rating apps using emulators. Recently seeing that the app rating and reviews affect user's download rates so much, Google's made it so the reviews & ratings are user accountable. I think you have to use your Google(+) account now to make a review, and it posts your profile pic along with it.

Dear developer, I've tried this app. Tough there's Ad banner under the screen, it's very useful. But some how it can't open my mp4 shoted by my phone showing "no subtitles". Pls fix. Besides it could be better if you could add some guiding UI or instruction pages at the beginning of the program, when this app is opened by user at the first time. 5 stars. Keep it up!
Would you like to have a try on Locker Master? If find it good pls rate it. It won't disappoint you.

I have recently published my App in the App Store and was wondering if you guys knew any good books or websites where i could get some information regarding App Store optimization
Coming from doing a lot of SEO i can understand how important ASO can become in the future as with the internet it was pretty similar, previously no one really gave a crap and later on it became essential to be able to rank in Google.
Do you guys do any App store Optimization?
Here are some articles i personally found useful:

A small ASO guide
Both Apple’s App Store and the Google Play have a myriad number of apps and it’s very easy to get lost in the crowd. Good visibility on the App Store is thus essential and can be ensured by following certain key pointers while launching your app:
1. Keep the title short, self explanatory and keyword centric. The important thing is to limit it in one line. For this you have to be extra cautious on Google Play as the users’ Android phone screens may vary in sizes.
2. While writing the description for your app, just keep two things in mind. First, that users don’t like to read paragraphs if they don’t find the initial lines interesting. And second, use as many keywords as possible so that your app may spring up on searches more often.
3. Google play allows you to add demo videos of your app. Do make one, as many of your prospective users may not find the screenshots too descriptive. Keep the video short and emphasize on the user friendliness of your app.
4. Icon images should be striking to make you app stand out in the list and screenshots should signify the simplicity of your app.
you can visit my website to read a full guide.
Really good advice. @Appiterate Strongly recommend
App Store Optimization Basics
For Apple Store you need to get the following right to get good rankings, which equals good downloads:
Icon - A great looking Icon which grabs the users attention & screams download me
Screenshots - Informative & Engaging screenshots which educate the user on your Apps features
Keywords - Well Researched 100 char keyword list which have high traffic & low competetion
App Name - App name which has keywords which you want to rank for

First post and cheap straight ad, please don't do that!!!.
I really do not mind your post about your services, but at first, please give some real advice, talk about your experience, your clients and achievements before redirecting users, I think you know about that kind of things better than me.... I personally find your website (not sure you're owner or just an employee) really professional and informative and you probably know your job, but please don't do that kind of cheap ads in you first post at least my Indian friend.
in-depth advice
Hi everyone. I've also heard these things could work pretty well:
- Localizations on google play - what is the best way to do this?
- Have a strong youtube channel link to your app page?
- Google +1's - what is the best to generate this? does it influence rankings? Is there a place to buy "good" +1s
- Links to app page - does this work? good place to buy links?
Any advice here? Please PM me then.
Thanks!

For #2, what is the optimal length of description?
I made the description as simply as possible as people don't read text. But it is too short and seems it doesn't work well with SEO.

I think it'd be a good idea to use the same techniques as in SEO. Link building is essential. Post comments on blogs that are related to your app, or app development in general. That way you'll get more downloads
ASO
the important part is about Keywords - high traffic & low competetion and use your keywords in App Name.
Great Icon
Video
use call in the description
Nice Screenshots.
Google released an eBook exactly for that: "The Secrets to App Success on Google Play"
You can download it for free from Play Books, it's an overview but contains a lot of useful information.
new app - SlapRun
With levels, coins store, and more.
The object of the game take 1st place you taken? Great!! You passed steps!! Do not taken?? Never mind, try again!!
you think its easy? See you win!
Search on Google Play - SlapRun
I'd love comments and reviews on the game
This thread is for "Discuss your experiences getting downloads, optimizing for search engine and app store placement, and using third-party marketing tools.".... It is not for apps or games advertising. That thread is here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530

And hundred and thousands of downloads have been made. People just love good apps. Really? You are saying that just make your game and people will find it if it's good enough? Maybe that was true some years ago, but certainly nowadays it's completely wrong. Optimize your keywords to be shown in relevant searches is one of the keys (ASO), but unfortunately not the only one. Spread the word in alternative channels is also necessary... but it isn't enough neither. Actually, get users without spend tons of dollars in advertising is quite a challenge. I really would like to hear some advices from someone who have experience in this.
By the way, JeanPierreQC, your idea is quite good, but I'm afraid there's many apps which do exactly the same, anyway cool idea, it's a pity you need a lot of users to make it work.
With patience
Unless you get very lucky there is no any simple way to get users fast. The market places are very competitive. Market you apps in social media and internet forums, get all your friends and relatives download your apps. Make many apps that draw users to your other apps. Make so great app that somebody wants to become your partner and does the promotion for you. Simple things like the signature banner below this message can make the difference in the long term.
try to implement the ASO to trigger the app installs
Don't forget that download alone isn't enough. you need the users to be engaged. Having thousands of downloads will not give you higher ranking if everyone simply uninstall it immediately. So be aware from pay per install plan where the users has insensitive to perform the installation. At the end of the day, your app needs to be able to keep the customers with you.
ASO is imho a bit overrated. Having relevant keywords and a nice looking icon and screens, and stuff like that, is simply common sense to me. As long as you have that you have good enough ASO really. ASO isn't some secret trick to get thousands of daily downloads like some people seem to think. There are no secret tricks for that.
To get a lot of download you need to put in A LOT of work, and/or A LOT of money. And have a really good app of course.
Anyway, I good idea that has worked very well for me is localising. If you can't localise your entire app you can at least localise the app description. Adding a few more "big" languages for my app description have almost doubled my downloads, even though the app itself is in english only. It's also cheap as you can get translations for $5 each on fiverr. Sure you won't know how good they are for that little money, but it's basically no money spent and it's probably a lot better than google translate at the very least.
If you are sure that your app is engaging enough for users then try to put as many sharing options as possible within you app like fb,whatapp, twitter. this can boost your downloads.

Hi,
Pretty interesting and good suggestion.
Could you please share some stats or further experiences about with v.s. without localising
Have you tried PR to push your app?
There's a blog post called "State of App Promotion" that you should check out. Can't post the link because I'm a new user, but just search for "DecisiveAds" on Twitter. It's pinned to the profile. Good luck!
AAP -Android App Promotion
Try AAP - Android App Promotion app on playstore as they provide free download exchange services where you download an app and your app gets downloaded in return .You can see the results in daily reports and take appropriate measure while doing so .
I checked the AAP - The idea is good, but the app has only 1 thousand installs, probably no more than 300 active, that means using this app I can drive maximum 300 installs - not serious promotion. Additionally, it is not clear, how google will consider this way of promotion - legitimate or not? So, taking a risk for few more installs worth?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Hi,
Insensitive install is quiet good for new app, because google don't care too much about uninstall for the first month of launch. Many big company also use insensitive install. But link building, website review, user review, how often user come back to you app is also really important.

Sorry but this is so wrong...
Having thousands of VALID downloads will boost your rankings even if 900 of them uninstalled it a day later. I'm writing from experience and not guessing
website promotion
The ultimate goal of search engine promotion is to increase sales. The more people see the site in high positions in the issue, the more people it visits and theoretically can become your customers. In order for a seo to produce results, it is necessary that the site be properly optimized using tools for a technical audit of the site and its analysis on parameters such as links, content and others.
