[Q] Samsung Movies help please

Hi All
I wonder if you could be of some help.
When I purchase my note I was given voucher codes which included Samsung movies.
I wouldn't normally purchase DRM protected files from anywhere but as they were 'free' I thought I may as well.
Now, to play them on the note you have to first play them on the PC to get the usage rights. My problem is that WMPlayer tells me that the WMV DRM component encountered a problem and won't play the file.
I have uninstalled WMplayer 11 and reinstalled, reset my DRM library and made sure all the correct settings are checked in the WMplayer 'privacy' tab, all to no avail.
Has anyone else encountered this or is it just my PC?
Thanks for any help
After one single DRM-protection purchase of a song on Nokia store years ago, I quickly decided honesty isn't worth all that hassle. Really, go to a torrent site.

Seriously? I got a voucher code too (from the "exclusives" tab in the Samsung Hub). Was then asked to download Samsung Movies which I did. Then needed to register. When I do so it takes my details (including email address and a password, but without asking me to choose a username). It says "account created" - but it doesn't then send me any email etc. and trying to login using email address or surname as the username fails.
I was going to email the 3rd party who runs the site to complain but given your feedback I don't think I'll bother, Viamonte's solution is soooo much easier (and from the look of the movie selection, I've already torrented all of the content they host which would have interested me anyway
Thanks for your replies guys...
I usually get my films from 'other' sources too but thought i'd use the voucher as it was free. There were a couple of older films which interested me, from the 30's, 40's and 50's.
@ -pigro- I had to email them too to get them to enable the code at their end! seriously, I wouldn't bother if I were you.
Anyway, I'll download the movies from other sources now as I've 'paid' for them ...
Thanks both anyway.

Kindle Fire in the UK. What you need to know.

So I received my Kindle Fire for Christmas, and I'm in the UK. My uncle from the US brought it over for me, and I hope this post will clear up any speculation about what will and will not work on your Kindle Fire in the UK.
1. Apps: Apps need a US credit card, or you cannot download from the Kindle Store. This was not really an issue for me, as I rooted my Fire, installed the Market, and can download from there, not to mention sideloading APK file apps, which I was able to do without rooting
2. Silk: Works fine, uses EC2 cloud like it should
3, Book Store: Haven't tried it, but I was able to download books I had purchased previously for my old Kindle
4: Prime: You get a month's free of Amazon Prime, I wasn't able to stream videos from it, and I don't really care, I don't want to pay 70 dollars + a year for it.
Everything else works fine, and I really love it. The only other issue, was during the set up, there is no option to select the UK time zone, so you have to change it manually from the settings later. Oh, and all the temperatures in the weather app are in Fahrenheit. But it works like a charm. Got lots of working apps, Minecraft, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds, and I'm using Calibre library to convert my PDFs into .MOBI format for reading on the Fire.
So all in all, it works pretty well in the UK actually! Hope this clears everything up for people in the UK thinking of getting it somehow. If I've missed anything please tell me!
Would also like to use the Kindle Fire in the UK but without rooting.
You mentioned being able to sideload apps ... but in order to do so, don't you need to download a file manager from the Amazon store (which a UK person cannot do)? and / or use an Android phone to backup an app?
I tried to download free apps from Amazon but even that is not possible and I don't have an Android phone .... is there any other way to sideload??
regards ....

Before rooting I was able to sideload by downloading directly using the Fire, then using the browser, going into the menu, and seeing my downloaded, from that file list you can launch APKs.
I'm using it in the Czech Republic and I can confirm that all the things mentioned by "georgeos" are valid.
If anyone is interested, here are some of my own findings:
- Books - you can purchase books from Amazon as long as you have a valid card number. You're eligible to borrow some of the books in the store with Prime subscription (limited to one book a month).
- Newsstand - same as above - you can check most of the magazines with a 14 day free trial subscription.
As far as the sideloading goes, it's pretty simple even without access to the App Store.
First you need to turn on installation of applications from unknown sources. Then use the browser to look for an .apk file of your preffered file manager (I used ES File Explorer since it was free and came highly recommended). Once the download is completed tap the status bar to show the recent notifications, then tap the downloaded .apk file to start the installation.

Ah yeah, sorry, forgot to mention that. But it is best to root the device, and install the Android Market, makes getting apps easier if you don't want to pirate the APKs, or if you're looking for the latest version of a free one, and it's always difficult to find a latest version APK. Also the Market shows ONLY the apps compatible with the device, so you don't have to go through the pain of downloading the APK and then it not working and having to uninstall it and delete it.
Hi - I've been searching around for about half an hour or so but can't find an "idiot's guide" (for that is what I need) on how to make my US Kindle Fire compatible with the UK app store.
I've asked Amazon directly a number of times but they refuse to help. I'm close to selling up and buying a UK one, so would really appreciate if anyone knew if there was a way to do this.
Many thanks in advance.

Warning: Android File-Encrypting, TOR-enabled Ransomware

For the community's information, I feel I need to create this thread to warn others:
Global IT security leader, ESET today announced that its engineers have spotted the first instance of a file-encrypting ransomware for Android. Once it has successfully infected a devices, this Android trojan scans the SD card for certain file types, encrypts them, and demands a ransom in order to decrypt the files.
After launch, the trojan displays a ransom message and encrypt files in a separate thread in the background. The ransom message is written in Russian and the payment is demanded in Ukrainian hryvnias. The message roughly translates to:
WARNING your phone is locked!
The device is locked for viewing and distribution child pornography, zoophilia and other perversions.
To unlock you need to pay 260 UAH.
1. Locate the nearest payment kiosk.
2. Select MoneXy
3. Enter {REDACTED}.
4. Make deposit of 260 Hryvnia, and then press pay.
Do not forget to take a receipt!
After payment your device will be unlocked within 24 hours.
In case of no PAYMENT YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA ON your device!"
The malware directs the victim to pay using the MoneXy service as it is not as easily traceable as using a regular credit card.
Android/Simplocker.A will scan the SD card for files with any of the following image, document or video extensions: jpeg, jpg, png, bmp, gif, pdf, doc, docx, txt, avi, mkv, 3gp, mp4 and encrypt them using AES. It will also contact its Command & Control server and send identifiable information from the device like its IMEI.
The sample analyzed by ESET is in the form of an application called ‘Sex xionix’. It was not found on the official Google Play store and the company estimates that its prevalence is low at this time but believes that this is most likely a proof-of-concept or a work in progress.
In light of such advanced malware, Pradeesh VS, General Manager at ESET Midlde East provided the following advice to Android Users, “We encourage users to protect themselves against these threats by prevention- by using mobile security solutions such as ESET Mobile Security for Android- and adhering to best security practices, such as keeping away from untrustworthy apps and app sources. If they are unfortunate to already be infected, they should recover the files from a backup. Because when you have a backup, then any Filecoder trojan- be it on Android, Windows, or any operating system- is nothing more than just a nuisance.”
Happy I don't keep anything on my phone seeing I'm always flashing, but this is good to know. Thanks for the info

Something similar has been effecting iPhones for a couple of weeks. Just be careful what apks you install.
Shouldn't the Verify Apps option in Android protect you from these things? That's basically the point of that option.
Perhaps good news.

Doesnt Verify Apps just check apps on the Play Market? If so this would not work as article states its not found in the Market..
Also, ESET is reporting this and also suggesting users use there virus software lol.. Shamless plug to get the work of their own software out there, self promoting, maybe they have a vested interest..

No I think Verify Apps was supposed to check only non play store apps. That's why the first time you install an app from a file manager or something it'll ask you to allow Verify Apps to check app security.

Curiosity about video monetization.

Hi everyone. My topic is about trying to solve a question I have just for curiosity, and not to use possible answers because I'm not a dev.
Most of you probably know the app Advanced Download Manager. I use it daily since a long time ago and I own the paid version. But I sometimes install the free version alongside to test if at the paid version I have problems download something at some site (to check if the problem is at the app or at the site).
The free version has a banner at the bottom to monetize its free service. But today going to Dailymotion I noticed that using the paid version the video starts as soon as its first section is loaded. But going to the same video using the free version a video ad is >always< loaded before the video starts to play.
I'm not using any ad blocker anywhere and I checked the Dailymotion site at many browser and every single time the site doesn't load any ads before the video. That only occurs when I use the free version of Advanced Download Manager (ADM). I checked the source of the video ad and it isn't related to Dailymotion, so obviously it is the app that is inserting it by itself when it "sees" I'm at a page where a video will be played. The ad video is loaded from "https://secure-ds.serving-sys.com".
Here is my question: this is allowed by the rules from Google Play Store? Like I said it is plain obvious the monetization using the banners as soon as anyone uses the free version of ADV. But the video ad before the actual video runs as if it was an ad from Dailymotion itself, and not from the app (which leads to this ad money going to ADV's dev , not to Dailymotion). To compare, it looks almost like YouTube videos with the ad running at the beginning, but the difference, like I said, is that it is disguised as an ad pushed by Dailymotion site when actually it is ADV that is serving it.
Anyone can check this: install both paid and free version and check any video at Dailymotion. The same video will always be "clean" using the paid version, and will always have ads using the free version.
Like I said, it is just curiosity if this type of monetization is allowed by Google's rules. It is so disguised as an ad served by the site you are visiting that I was wondering if such tactic doesn't break any rules.
Hi. Looks like it just a little bug. I am sure they already fixed that. Isn't it?
