[Q] Nexus 7 wont update from 4.1.1 JRO03S - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As stated, my Nexus 7 wont update from 4.1.1 JRO03S. I have had it for well over a year and fresh out of the box the update failed on a continuous basis. Ive tried everything I've seen about clearing the cache and doing a factory reset but the problem persists. Ive gone to Google and decided to try to flash a new version on it but I cant make heads or tails of the instructions.
Can someone help me with how to flash a new version onto my nexus 7 so I can get past 4.1.1 and stop having to see it fail the update every 2 hrs.
Please, if you can, help me in layman's terms. (I'm an accountant by trade and all this developer mumbo jumbo is making my head spin)
Thanks in advance!
PS: If I need to provide additional information, please also tell me where/how to get it.

use WugFresh NexusRootToolkit

You can use the toolkit mentioned above, or do it yourself. It's a pretty simple process and maybe you can grasp the concept of Android a bit.
Here is a fine guide if you decide to do it yourself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796

Use the Nexus Root Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
You'll need the latest version to root 4.2 but it should be a simple enough job.

I would suggest you stay stock for a few days. Maybe a week or so as im sure there will be another update in the very near future.Once that is out my suggestion will be to do a new google image download and flash that after a full wipe..
This is how i am going to handle this new 4.2 system.. Let them work the kinks out before i start flashing something custom again...
Good Luck either way.

Hi Erica,
I was hoping you can help with a question. I am currently stock, rooted, original custom recovery, I have OTA rootkeeper installed and SuperSU v0.98 running Android 4.1.2. If i was to update via the OTA version 4.2 how would you recommend I go about it. Should I run the factory reset on the tablet, should I remove SuperSU (heard from other posts could cause an issue when upgrading) or unroot it from that application. There are so many posts with different ideas so i was hoping you may have a good solution
Thanks,
JBIRD

[Q] Can I go back to 412?

Since updating to 420, my N7 has more bugs than a rain forest and runs like a bargain bin special. Is there any way to revert to 412 and get my dream tablet back? It is stock, un-rooted. Any help would be so much appreciated.
There's an easy way to restore your tablet back to 4.1.2.
Download Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit, then go here and download the 4.1.2 factory image for the Nexus 7 (this isn't essential as you can download an image within the toolkit).
Now connect your N7 to your PC with USB debugging on, and you can flash the factory image using the toolkit.
Edit: Okay wugfresh.com seems to be down. If you feel comfortable using adb and fastboot directly, you could use this guide.
Thanks for this. Have completed downloads and will attempt it later today.
Perfect tutorial here and every nexus owner should know how to fastboot their device back to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796 very easy to do if you just follow the guide word for word.
How to Downgrade to 4.1.2 back agian!
I know, 4.2.x is a crap, 4.4.2 a bigger crap.
Method 1:Upgrade to 4.3, 4.3 is quite good.
One Problem with 4.3: in older versions of „Hill Climb Racing" like 1.9.0 (my experience) you can't hear the engine sound after 1.7 seconds.
4.2 eats'n'kills your battery and has many bugs.
Method 2: If you really want to get back to 4.1.2 like me (because i want that too) then take a look here:

HELP needed!

Hi everyone - thanks in advance for your help.
I have tried to get 4.4 paranoid android running on my nexus 4 - however, CWM is not working (can't enter recovery, nor can I flash it in ROM Manager -- it says "an error occurred while flashing your recovery"), and I do not have any of the google apps.
I have not gone into this stuff for many years (did it on an old xperia), but unfortunately got into this whole mess when I bought this nexus which I didn't realize until after was rooted. Anyhow, can someone please provide a link with a straight-forward step-by-step process for how I can get this phone working again, back to stock, with google apps and everything? In simple terms would be great, from start to finish.
I really do apologize in advance for my amateur knowledge coming into this. In essence, I am simply trying to get around issues that came up after having bought a rooted nexus 4. But now in flashing Paranoid Android CWM won't work and I can't flash any google apps as a result.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you.
Hello,
Actually, rooting yor phone is not the problem, btw you can check this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534160 to back your n4 to stock 4.4.
You will need to unlock your bootloader before, however it is simple and the instructions is on the link too.

Anything I Should Know ??

Hi guys
I have a 32gb nexus 7 with 3G (2012) due to be delivered tomorrow and the first thing i want to do to it is root it.
But as things change so fast i was wandering if this guide is still up to date:
Before rooting it i will be updating it to the latest kitkat firmware so i want to also make sure that the Nexus Rootkit Toolkit has been updated to be able to root the kitkat firmware ?
Also while googling (is that a word....lol) i come across a guide saying that the toolkit has problems with the 3G version nexus 7.
I also come across one that said that if something is/isn't ticked in the toolkit then it will brick the tablet. The trouble is i cant find the guide now so i need you guys t let me know if this is all still true.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks

I would steer clear of toolkits. As you said they can cause more damage than they are worth and it is always beneficial to learn the tools, especially if something does go wrong. Plus you get a good feeling when it works.
I would take a look and read how to use fastboot, which will allow you to unlock your bootloader and root your device.

Real newbie help needed

Hi all
I know you probably get this a lot but could really do with some help.
Basically my wife has a nexus 7 2012 and it's become unusable now since lollypop. I have tried factory reset etc but it's still so slow. I have decided I'd like to delve into the rooting game and see if this will solve the problem.
I have a nexus 7 2013 so if I am honest if I brick it then I won't be devastated because she can always use mine so decided to bite the bullet and try.
I am not expecting a walk through guide but is there any good way to try and start this? I am quite techy but I know nothing about rooting let alone where to start.
I kind of understand roms and I want a basic one that will make her nexus workable again.
Any help on how I go about starting this whole rooting would be appointed.
Thanks all
Chris
Are you on 5.1.1? If not get that update fixed my 2012 & 2013 right up! If not, search for "nexus root tool kit". That's what I use without a hitch! But try the update first, it may just do the trick.
? Here there be Whales ?
Thanks and yea I'm on 5.1.1 I'll search that thanks
Once I root the device how do you put roms on? And what roms are the best?

An easy way to root is by using the nexus root toolkit by wugfresh, a good rom to try is chroma also mkernel works well with the stock rom. Make sure you make a backup before you start flashing anything .
How do you back up?
