Google Cardboard DIY virtual reality app not working on note 2 ? - Google Cardboard

At the recent google IO, a fun little project was launched.
https://developers.google.com/cardboard/
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.samples.apps.cardboarddemo
It's called cardboard, and it's google take on smartphone / VR helmet. I was really curious to try it on my Note 2, specially since I already had a helmet. (Made it when I was bored some time ago.)
Saddly, it seems the app won't work on a galaxy note 2. It should, but it doesn't.
So I wondered, does anyone else tried the app ? Did you manage to make it work on note 2 ?

Hi there! Same thing happens with me and not only with that app, with Google camera as well.
I'm running stock kitkat from samsung.
Could this problem be from Google apps?

It appears our devices don't support the "GL_EXT_robustness extension"
I encountered the same issue with WebGL not being supported in Chrome. It appears this is why.

i tried it in a stock i9300 and i9500 and both crash .

Does this mean the app will never work the GN2?

Thanks for the answer. Already clearer.
Would switching to a non-samsung rom help support it ? ( I guess not, even non-samsung rom probably use samsung drivers.)

Did anyone tryed to use the VR Toolkit provided by google?
I would like to know if apps build with this crash on the note 2.

I have a note 2 on the sprint network(sph-l900 running 4.4.2)
and the app works on mine
as for the cardboard case it seems the note 2s size may cause problems(i will be adding 1/4 inch to the front cover)
the note 2s camara is blocked(i will cut my own hole to compensate for phone difference)

Well, the app was just updated. Like 5 minutes ago on my phone. And now it works. On my note 2, only the "windy day" demo crash.
More info I found though on the subject though :
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=288731
"The problem is that the EXT_robustness implementation on the Mali-400 does not support reset notification. However, Chrome doesn't use virtual GL contexts on these GPUs, so in theory the effects of WebGL shaders could be confined to the respective WebGL GL context.
I did some further testing (https://codereview.chromium.org/24037006/) and turns out it's still possible for long running shaders in the WebGL contexts to block GL execution in other contexts -- not limited ones in Chrome. Based on this I don't think we want to enable WebGL on Mali-400 based devices.
Note that users can still override this by disabling the "Software rendering list" in about://flags."

Even though I figured it wouldn't be the correct dimensions I went ahead and made the case per the instructions and the biggest issue is the focal point. Everything else including the magnet placement works. I'm going to pull the pdf into photoshop and increase all of the dimensions so it will actually be able to encase the Note 2.

I finished it a couple of days ago and just got around to printing it and cutting it out of cardboard. It needs a little tweaking, but otherwise works pretty good. I need to scale it down just a bit since the one I made accounts for my phone being in my otterbox case. I'm almost done with that one though so I should have it complete in a day or two.
I've included a picture of my completed in-case version looks like. I still need to make one change I know of to this case. When increasing the dimensions I guess I missed making the back panel bigger so it doesn't actually close all the way now. I'll upload that one when I'm done too.

Hey SPIDERTECH,
nice to hear you got a note2-version of the cardboard. Can you share the Photoshop-file?
Best regards!
Drongo

Please share the template for Note 2

I would have had this done sooner, but I wanted to print everything out and get it assembled before making the PDFs. I've attached a ZIP with 3 pdf files to print each individually and assemble like the original. I've also included a transparent PNG and a TIFF that is the entire thing for large printing.
I need to rework the version with the otterbox since after printing and assembling it I discovered that I had missed resizing certain parts. I should have that one done soon though.

I have sent you $10.00 Spidertech for the files you just posted...when you get the one for the Note 2 with Otterbox done, I will send you more for it as well. I appreciate you sharing this, and since I am also having trouble getting my Note 2 SGH-i317 upgraded to Kitkat 4.4.2 from 4.3, I will gladly pay you if you can offer advice to me on what to do via email.
Looking forward to the Note 2 with Otterbox case files.
Thank you!

I got this template from a friend (source unknown)
I made one using tgis template and works perfect.
Its not the best looking cardboard, but fits perfectly and works great.
Also i tried downloading some SIDE BY SIDE 3d videos from YouTube and played using MxPlayer ( have to set it to 80% zoom for 720p videos to get perfect display)

Some other nice apps for use with the cardboard case can be found here http://www.divegames.com/games.html. I actually use the two I've listed below.
ViewR - uses your camera in SBS format so you can strap this to your head and view the camera feed. It has voice activated triggers that are used to change the "filter" on the screen which is actually pretty fun to play around with.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=biz.buelter.viewr
Side-By-Side Video Player - Lets you play any videos from your phone in SBS mode. The only issue I've found with it on the Note 2 is that the videos cannot be played from the gallery. If you play them from a file viewer like Astro then they work fine.

I have tried both apps. Due to loss of edge data i don't really see a point watch videos in it. Unless the videos are made to compensate the loss (round cornered videos)
Also in my first post i attached template but its not getting attached.

Awesome videos mate . already subscribed to your channel.
I wanted to comment on something about the s note app, u mentioned the pen double tap to bring up the "lite" version to scribble a note on it, and when we click maximize it takes it to the full size s note app.
So, I have noticed that even after maximizing, the s note app is missing a few functionalities (like the shape and formula match), and it only serves as a simple note taking app (like the s memo on the original note), unfortunately I find this a bit of an inconvenience.
But I just discovered this trick , once u hover the pen or u touch it with the screen, the fingers touch input is completely disabled, even the capacitive buttons (so u can't accidently hit them), and if u touch the screen with a finger and draw a line (without lifting up yr fingers) then u hover the s pen, that line disappears!
I find those two tiny details extremely useful and important.
Thx again for the videos.

You're totally right about expanding S Note (lite). It doesn't open the full S Note. Just expands with the recording option. As much as I like S Note and the more I use it, I realize how the UI needs some serious improvements.
I don't have the second problem you reported though. Maybe I got an update?
Features I want...
drag and drop combine pages...
at the end of the day, I have many different notes. it shouldn't open a new file every time after the pen is pulled out (with the auto popup note option)
bigger hover previews.
swipe deletes.
multi page hover previews.
google doc syncs snb files that don't open anywhere else than on the galaxy note...grr...
popup note shouldn't pop up a note when you pull out a pen when you're already in S Note....
anyway, that's just for starters. Still love it. Can't wait for improvements.

MyScript Notes is "Now" in the Samsung Market

I just found out that the maker of our S-Notes did release their version to the Samsung market. (not only to the OEM)
It has one big feature: writing and convert later :victory:
The selection tool is also good.
It does also export to txt. :good:
But the rest is mostly the same as the S-Note, if not worse: :crying: No shapes, No Calc, limited choice of backgrounds and pen styles, no recordings, no Wolfram.
Perhaps a bit slower.

I see it's rather pricey too (€8).
But this price could also be considered good news if this app is intended to really become a full featured, "pro" version of SNote in the next future.
Anyway, at this stage, I don't think the price is worth it yet (considering the features present in SNote and not in the app and considering other good paid for alternative apps that are priced less than half).
I had it on my lenovo thinkpad as an oem version. It want perfect utilities the things it did it did well to me s-note is full featured but doesn't do the basics well enough so much so that it is nearly unusable. I can't for the life of me figure out why the basic function of converting handwriting to text is so poorly implemented that I never use it.

And, if you buy from Samsung, you'll only be able to access it on Samsung devices. Too bad it hasn't come to the Market. At least that way you don't have to pay twice.
Folks with the ThinkPad Tablet got caught that way. Bought it from Lenovo and now if they want it for their Note they have to buy it all over again.

It's pretty basic and missing many features of the S-Note, but I love it.
Because it convert a bit better, I didn't have any problems with : backslash or coma, numbers and the r.
Where the S-Notes makes me mad, you write a text, make a mistake and the problems begins: you try to correct, but loose the input focus when using the pen, so you use the arrow keys you get back at the end of line but forget the space... no easy way to put text blocks together.....
And so one....
The MyScript is almost as so good, as was my old Newton MP2100.
Could someone get a deeper look at the JB S-Notes, I know about the page slider, color picking, backgrounds, I also did peak something about "Import" ?
What else did change? Or is new?

MSN didn't work for me, so I bought it and asked for a refund in the first month. 7Notes with mazec is far superior IMO. It handles my chicken scratch writing much better than MSN ever did. Glad it works for you. SNote was much worse for me than MSN.

I don't see MyScript Notes in the Samsung App store. I am running a Galaxy Note 2, so maybe that explains it. I'd love to get my hands on that apk file.
Funny, seems only for 10" Tablets.
I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 N8013...how come I cant find this app? It's not in the PlayStore, and I also cannot find Samsung Market on my tablet. I tried to install Samsung Market, but I dont see the app on my device.

Artists - What apps do you use?

I'm posting this here, because I would assume that most of the people who bought a Note did it because of the S-Pen. Therefore, you probably did it for artistic reasons, or because of handwriting support.
Personally, I did it for artsy reasons. For the last couple years (since I got my iPad1) I have been preferring drawing pictures digitally. In order to reference my "style" (might help with my later question) my work is on:
http://niiru.deviantart.com/
I had a few setbacks (apps being a pain, etc) and problems with resolutions and all that, but for the last few months it was ticking along nicely.
And then... I wanted to upgrade my tablet. But an iPad4? The same as what I had pretty much, but the new version? Seemed boring... even though it would be easy, as I could keep the new apps etc...
BUT no... I impulse bought a Note10.1 instead. Because the more-accurate style of stylus could only help, and pressure support? I did without it until now, but it might help in future!
HOWEVER...
I started with Sketchbook Pro on the ipad, a good program. However it was limited in the resolution you could use, which meant that the exported pictures were not very big on my computer screen. And of course, if you enlarge them, they become heavily pixelated. Not good.
So I changed to vector programs, mostly one called "iDraw", which is basically a full adobe illustrator style program. Does absolutely everything. And the main advantage being, the vectors are saved when you export the file... so you can make the pictures as big as you want without any pixellation problems!
My problem with android though... the only vector apps I can find are Adobe Ideas (very very badly rated, 1 star app...) and one called Infinite Design (very highly rated, but still rough around the edges).
BACK TO THE POINT...
So while Adobe Ideas is being made into something thats... not crap. And while infinte design is working out its issues (though I'm still going to try and use it), I wondered what all you guys out in Note-land were using?
Im expecting some nods to sketchbook pro.... and I'm really hoping someone will tell me a way to get around its "canvas size is limited to screen resolution" problem. As this... is pretty bad.
...and I'm also hoping for a few new ideas, some "diamond in the rough" apps which haven't reached my ears yet..
Really hoping I won't regret buying the Note to be honest... I had high hopes for it. It has hit an early hurdle, even taking into account the relative youth of the android tablet app environment.
FOR THOSE WHO SKIPPED THE WALL OF TEXT:
QUESTION - What do you guys use, to make pretty pictures on the tablets. Vector based for preference, or bitmap if the canvas size can be changed!
Thanks y'all.
(excuse any rambling, it is 2am here. 'nuff said.)
edit: I didn't put this in the "questions" thread, because its not a question about the Note itself... sorry if that was a mistake.
I also bought the note to draw on and do some sketching, but have been unable to find a program that I like. I keep getting random lines with some of the apps from leaning on the screen. Very dissapointing, but I would like to see what people would recommend

Ok, after another half hour of playing around with Infinite Design, I can see why a) some people give it great reviews, and b) why some people hate it.
I'll start with b) - The interface is a little confusing, and definately needs to be worked on. I think its a one-man project though, so things like UI design may not be at the top of his list. It takes a while to find some things, like certains tools and ways of doing things. I guess thats what they would call a learning curve though.
however...
a) This app does have some very very clever design features. I have found a couple that have actually wowed me, and made me think I could use it to do some really interesting work.
For instance, you can add a line of symmetry to a drawing, so that everything you draw is mirrored along a vertical/horizontal/angled line of symmetry.
Not too special you say? Well you can add this line mid-drawing, without it automatically mirroring your previous work, and do a couple mirrored lines, then remove it. Ive known programs that would simply mirror everything.
Still not enough? The line of symmetry is customisable, it defaults to the centre of where your screen is aimed on the canvas, and can be moved to any location. *This is actually potentially very useful, and I know of no iOS apps that have this as a feature.*
back to b) though, finding out HOW to put in these lines of symmetry, and how to then move them (it involves a tool that is in a different menu entirely) was half judgement and half luck on my part. There aren't any tutorials for any of this stuff *yet*.
But yes, if vectors float your boat (as they do mine) it would seem that "Infinite Design" is currently the one to watch on Android. Its not perfect, it will take some work and getting used to, but with a few more updates (and the guy seems to be working on them fairly regularly, relatively speaking) it could be something pretty special.
SO I have put in an answer to my own question, someone elses turn now!
Edit:
I actually emailed the creators of sketchbook pro (auto desk) because I was so annoyed by the canvas size limitation I wanted to vent my anger in a request for much-needed-changes...
Less than an hour later, I had an actual reply! I was shocked, to say the least.
Apparently Chad (the auto desk guy) was so helpful, he decided to let me know that the new version of sketchbook for iPad and android was coming soon, and would have changes to the canvas limitation, as well as various other "exciting changes in the way people will use this app".
He seemed excited, and now so am I!
So there might be good things coming for sketchbook pro, and I am glad as that was always a very good app on iOS.

Markers
Pretty Painter
Quill
Sketch and Paint
Layer Paint
Snote Jellybean version , for collage type cutting and pasting multiple images and creating new concept characters .
me and my colleagues here @ Dreamworks Animation use the tablet mainly for caricature and painting , so its art all the way .
You may want to check out this thread to see some examples of art Note 10.1 users have done. Will also give you some idea of the capabilities of the apps they used.

Quill or Papyrus are the best drawing apps in my opinion.

me and my colleagues here @ Dreamworks Animation use the tablet mainly for caricature and painting , so its art all the way .

Good list! I'm going through them on the play store at the moment, though a few of them fall into the "fun" category, of being nice to play around and doodle on, but no use for any bigger projects. The problem is usually a matter of having no way to export the pictures as a usable file type
edit: layer paint seems interesting, if it ever makes a tablet version it could be awesome. I cant find an app called "drawing" though...

I had heard of these before, but I had thought they were just for handwriting (that is what they themselves advertise as) though the quill app does seem to have a few nice drawing tools too. And it can save as a .pdf.. which would usually mean saving any vector information too! Interesting..

Ahh thanks, I will take a look
I have also found out about an app called TouchDraw... vector drawing, seems to have been a popular one on the iPad store, and is released on android recently it seems....
But its unavailable in my country? I'm in the UK, so I'm guessing its for America only for some reason (As I doubt the developer has a specific grudge against the UK). I may try and find a way around this, so that I can test it out and review it for you guys.
I'll try and post up a review thread of all these apps somewhere soon, so people can find the apps that would be most useful to them (vectors/bitmap/fun/serious/etc)
Assuming this would be useful to anyone anyway, I know it would be to me
My daughter wants an app that's good for inking and has a blend and smudge tool, multiple brush modes, and layers. Do any of the apps out there fit this bill.

I got this just now. Had an hour of playing around (and looking up windows help guides to figure some stuff out)....
Oh..Em..Gee.
This is an insane program. It is like a full windows animation program, on a tablet.
And strangely, it wouldnt work on any normal tablet, only ones that use a pen. Fingers would be way too thick to hit these menu buttons, and the contextual help only comes up on "mouse-overs".
Colour me impressed, this tool will be something awesome when it is released. There needs to be more like this! Programs that the iPad could *never* have (unless they release a non-capacitive screened iPad, which I doubt they would).

Sketchbook pro has most, if not all, of these features. Not sure on the blend and smudge for the android version, I know that the iPad version did. Check it out in the Play store, it should list the features.
It is a very good program, and I have been told by an Autodesk employee that a new update that will add all sorts of nice new features, and will be coming out "soon". Though how soon "soon" is, is anyones guess.
Dont take my word for it though (I'd hate for you to spend money and then blame me if I was wrong!!!) so check out the Play listing for sketchbook pro. Make sure you end up buying the "Sketchbook Pro for Tablets" one though, if you do buy it.
Edit: There are blend modes using layers.... but no smudge tool in sketchbook. Not on android anyway, it has been on the iPad version for a long time though. I would *think* that it would get added in the upcoming update. Sorry I couldnt be more help, I haven't yet explored the colouring side things on android...
However, I hear good things about a program called "Infinite Painter", made by the same guy who does the Infinite Design app. The pictures I have seen done using it were very impressive, so I expect that might have smudge/blend tools. I would check that one out if I were you. It has a Note-specific version of the app, which is nice!

This is a link to the Free version. Probably has adverts or limited saves or something. The paid version isnt expensive though.
I use sketchbook pro, best app for drawing I've used and easy translation from photoshop illustrator but slightly easier for stuff like adding layers.
Lacks the one thing it needs which is palm rejection which would make it a worthwhile purchase.

It's the app I used on iPad, but trust me when I say the iPad version has a lot more tools in it. Don't know why they've been so slow with the android one.
An update on my infinite design findings... It's good. But it's missing some necessary tools, such as Path joining and being able to select-all. Also it seems you can't have your line be a different color to your fill...
Vector graphics users will hopefully understand what I mean lol. I miss my iDraw program on the iOS. It had everything. Maybe someday soon a program will catch up to it!
Although I still need to try that new TouchDraw program that's on Samsung apps... It looks promising, in theory.
Because people think of Apple users as "artists" and Android users as geeks.
Anyway, tvpaint looks ridiculously complex!
I once was quite good at using TV Paint (when it was called Mirage) but I forgot almost all of it. It's a very specific program. Right now I would kill for MyPaint on Note 10.1. I'm considering porting it - but it uses Python which is not available on Android AFAIK.

Its probably generally quite true, but as an artist AND a geek, I am happy with my wacom-powered device. So they need to start making apps for it!
Saying that, I had an email from the developer of the vector app I use, and he has finished his other project for now and is back to work on his next update for this app. So things are moving forward!
I was just about to bite the bullet, and spend the £5.50 for the TouchDraw app from the samsung store when I noticed.... It is only compatible with Jellybean 4.1+.
Which hasnt been released for my device yet, officially.
Lame.
Might be time to root.

In your opinion, how does the new Note compare to its predecessor? Worth it or not?

Just curious on your opinion.
My newer one is coming in the mail soon, but how does the Note 2014 compare to the 2012 edition? Worth the upgrade or not?
Much happier, or what features do you wish it kept? Etc.

I loved my N10.1-12; until I got a N3. The 386 DPI display made the 147 PPI display on the N10.1-12 downright painful. There's really nothing I'd say I miss s/w or feature wise when compared to the N10.1-14. Multiview's completely different and S Note's been updated. You'll hear people say they like the "old way" better. While it's different, once you get use to it, Samsung's logic behind the changes starts to make sense. S Pen being relocated is great because you can access it when the tablet's standing. And I love the new Book Cover. It uses magnets to stay closed (the N10.1-12's flopped around) and you can set Daynote to open when the cover's opened which gives you an enlarged Action Memo space to begin immediately taking notes as well as displaying the weather and your day's agenda. The Book Cover also shuts down the Note when it's closed. People have said the front facing speakers of the old Note were better but I mostly use headphones and haven't noticed a big difference the times I've used the external speakers.
Here what I consider the biggest improvements between the two:
Display. I think it's gorgeous.
Form factor. It's pretty amazing how much bulk and weight Samsung was able to remove.
Software. I like the updated apps that are common, Air Command, Scrap Book, and Action Memo and the generally more contemporary feel.
Things I question:
In some places, like Notification Panel icons being over 1" square, the phone UI on a tablet isn't particularly well implemented.
The new Note is faster than the old but not by as much as the h/w should allow. Good news is the Magazine UX-equipped units at CES looked much faster and more fluid than the N10.1-14 so performance should be addressed by updates. Pinch-zooming to display all home pages on the N10.1-14 isn't particularly pretty.
Battery charging on the Exynos models (P-600/P-601) is slooow - slower than the old N10.1-12. The S-800 P-605 has Qualcomm's Quick Charge feature and charges unusually fast.
I love my N10.1-14 and have no regrets buying it.

I wrote this as soon as I got my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and before I sold my old one: LINK
Now after owning it for about 2 months, I have to honestly say I have no regrets. I actually use it more than my laptop most of the time. The screen is so, so much superior it's no contest. I absolutely love watching things on my tablet and I do so more than the previous gen. For the first time I've also started reading magazines properly on it because the resolution is just so much more pleasing. I prefer the form factor as the newer tablet is lighter now. I can't really remember if the speakers are worse or not to be honest but I think they are fine for me and my needs. This wasn't a necessary upgrade for me, the previous gen was a very good tablet in its own right, but this one is exactly what I wanted. I'm not sure if I'll upgrade again unless it completely changes. I much prefer the look, the form factor and the screen resolution. However, I'm not really fussy probably in comparison to others, before this I never owned a full HD device as I only received my Galaxy Note 3 after. I personally think you will be happy with it though.

Hopefully in the refurb process Samsung adjusted whatever h/w issues were causing the problem. It's kind of been quiet about the issue lately so I'd guess later builds are fine. A lot of people returned or exchanged their tablets, some multiple times, so there's no question that returns that are now refurbs were affected. It's up to Samsung and luck as to whether you will be.

In the end I sold it to a friend but I basically charged slightly more than what I was going to sell it on sellmymobile.com since I gave him a MHL to HDMI adapter also. I got £155. I'd say check on that site to see how much you can sell your tablet for, it's pretty easy as I sold my first galaxy note this way.
I realised the bluetooth keyboard problem was only with the OfficeSuite app. I changed to Jotterpad X and using my bluetooth keyboard was perfectly fine so I'm not quite sure what happened. It's been a while since I've tried using it with OfficeSuite again. I can't say if every bluetooth keyboard will be fine, but mine seems to be okay. As I said before, I used it with the Jotterpad X app and also I've started blogging from the Wordpress app so I've written quite a bit with my keyboard. Here's a link to the keyboard I have:

You can still do that. They still advertise the multiwindow feature and you can have a floating window on top, although if not rooting, the apps are limited. There is a way around that which you can check on here, but it's kind of long. There's no Google search app for the floating window, but you can pin a browser and use that for searching. The only apps available right now are the calculator, alarm, youtube, contacts, chaton, hangouts and the default internet browser. Maybe people don't like it because you don't have as much control over the multi-window since it automatically snaps into place?

It's still there, sort of. Pen Window which you can open from the Air Command launcher allows you to have re-sizable "mini" windows running. On my 3G N10.1-14 the apps are:
Multiview now works the way it does on the N3. The N2 and N10.1-12 used completely different multiview methods and, owning both, it drove me crazy. The best part of the new Multiview is that you can have multiple instances of the same app (EG: browser) open, you can drag and drop content between windows, and the control of open windows is now a lot easier.
Another great feature is the automatic use of Multiview in certain apps. Like being in the stock e-mail app and clicking in a link in an e-mail automatically opens the URL in a Multiview window.
Scrap Book takes the old persistent clip board further by allowing you to store and categorize content anywhere you find it. And it syncs with your Samsung account so what you capture on once device is automatically available on all your other Scrap Book-equipped devices.
The drastic s/w changes between the '12 and '14 was kind of a shock at first but the more you use it the more logical the new approach Samsung's taken seems. And like the weather, with potential changes coming in M-UX, if you don't like it it may change.

There's something wrong with some N10.1-14's. Devices that connect fine for some people don't work for others even though the BT devices being attached are identical. People who had problems and exchanged their N10.1-14's had no problems with BT devices they had issues with when using their first device.
The screen on the original note 10.1 was brutal I had it for 30 minutes and packed it back up and returned it to the store - no way I could use that tablet for anything but video - reading text on it was painful - for that alone the new note 10.1 is worth the purchase along with it is much faster, etc. Etc. Etc.

Just checked that out, and I see why you don't have any problems.. For that price, problems should and are, non-existent!!!
I have had mine for a month and a half now and I still cannot put it down. This thing has been perfect for taking notes during lectures. I also use an Anker bluetooth keyboard and HP bluetooth mouse with this tablet along with OfficeSuite Pro to really make this a productivity machine. I had a few bluetooth, WiFi, and lag issues but that seemed to fix itself out of the blue and this thing is running great. Screen is amazing, it's fast for playing all the latest games (and emulators). Best tablet I have ever used definitely worth the upgrade IMHO.

Quick OT question. How the hell do you get Office Suite Pro to cut/copy/paste when using an off-screen keyboard? I can highlight text just fine but there's no option available to do anything with it. The "help" says a cut/copy/paste sub-menu should pop-up but it doesn't.

I usually have to use the Spen to do that. Maybe they'll fix this in an update because sometimes it is a little annoying.
EDIT: When i double click on a word within a document it highlights it and brings up the menu to either cut/paste/copy. I was just typing an essay for my Pyschology class when I noticed this.
I guess you could say the screen alone is worth it. But there are a few other problems that I'm not happy with on the 2014 Edition. I don't like the hardware and capacitive buttons I much prefer the software ones after every other device I own is software. I hate that apps will adapt to hardware keys and require you to hit the capacitive menu key instead of including the menu button in app. This leaves me searching for a menu key. The tablet is also really laggy. Like really really laggy. Overall I prefer everything about the OG one except the screen, which was horrendous enough to make me put up with this one's shortcomings.

With the Pro 12.2, will you get Note 4 or Gear S?

Hello, I am using the Note 2 LTE and the PRO 12.2 LTE. I am planning to buy either the Note 4 or the new Gear S. Sure the Note 2 and Note 4 are smaller than the PRO 12.2. The latter can do almost all the things that the Note 2 and 4 are capable of (can we upgrade the software of the PRO to the ones used in Note 4?). For me, the main use of the Note 4 and Gear S is: phone calls. I guess I can do it with the PRO using some kind of bluetooth headset. Of course, besides having a better camera, the Note 4 is better at photo taking because it is too heavy and difficult to press the photo taking button while holding the PRO 12.2.
I will buy a new MacBook Pro Retina 15". It will be too heavy to carry the laptop, the PRO 12.2 and the Note 4. I probably use the PRO 12.2 for pdf annotation, pdf viewing, note taking, video watching, etc. I may not carry the MacBook Pro 15" as often as I did in the past. I do need the Mac (Mac OS and Windows) for my research work though. The PRO cannot serve as a laptop replacement in my case.
Looking to pick up the Note 4 eventually though I'm not sure if I'll do so straight away. I still like my Nexus 4 w/ Mahdi ROM.
I'm not sure I want to pick up a Tizen based wearable. I just have this personal issue with entering into another platform and wonder what support there will be for it from application developers. Its just another consideration I'd have to make which may not exist as much on plain Android Wear devices. I'll most likely pick up a Moto 360 or LG's round watch though.
When I travel both my Note Pro and my rMBP come with me. I really don't mind the weight of carrying both at all and my use case simply doesn't support the Note Pro being a laptop replacement. My Note Pro is primarily for content consumption and web browsing. Note taking is secondary and productivity is a distant last. It's quite useful for email and whatnot but I can't get significant work done on it other than mild annotation of PDFs.
Probably not. I have a Note 3, the Note 4 feels like a step backwards. (Particularly if the EU gets the N910C with the Exynos. Rubbish.)
I'm a gamer and a designer, so I always carry my laptop(17.3" Asus N76VB) with me, as the NotePro is simply not capable of replacing it. Not because of the hardware, but mainly because of Android. (iOS won't help. Neither will Linux. And the Surface has an Intel HD, so not useful either.)
As such, my NotePro is my entertainment device. Films, magazines, comics, drawing, that sort of thing. My Note 3 serves as my go-to device for most things on the road, as well as an e-reader.
As for the Gear... I'm a Scifi fan. I didn't get stuck in 1960, and as such I will not be spending my money on tech with a 'retro' design. Not to mention, I want Android, no Tizen. Until it starts working and looking like this, I'm out.
Thanks for the warnings about the Gear. The Note PRO is more like a large screen device below 1kg that I could use on public transportation and while waiting for the foods in restaurants. For research work, I still need a laptop.
I don't know why, but I've always liked the idea of making phone calls with my watch, without the need of a smart phone nearby. The Gear S is the most interesting to me. As others have mentioned, the new OS is a bit of a concern. Not to mention how nice it plays with other devices, should I replace my Note 3. I'll be keeping a close watch after release to see how it does in the wild.
I may consider the Note 4 a few months after release once prices settle down, real world results are in, and the other manufactures have released competing devices. But for what it'll cost off contract (i.e. $700+), I hardly see a reason to hand over that kind of cash any time soon. And that's coming from somebody who frequently buys new gadgets way too often.
When it comes to smart watches and Android Wear what exactly is the draw to these devices?
I currently see them as wrist mounted notification panels cleverly disguised as watches LOL. What else am I missing?

I currently see them as wrist mounted notification panels cleverly disguised as watches LOL. What else am I missing?

James Bond.
That's hilariously the main reason people want one; because he wore it and that made it cool, and ever since they were kids a lot of people have wanted one to feel like they're a spy.
I'm not kidding, that was the reason they developed them (employed or not, the R&D lads are still geeks and nerds.(Aren't we all?)) and it's the main idea behind the marketing of them.
Better if it has a camera and a voice recorder.
The exciting thing about the note 4 release is the eventual release of the software enhancements that may trickle down to the other note products. The snap note feature for example or the improved floating window support.

Note Edge for me TYVM?
Turnover is just too damn fast for me.
Hi Y´all!
Got my P905 pro 12.2. Got my N9005 N3. Don´t really need anything new in the months to come.
Anyway - As the title says. The turnover in this business IMHO is just too damn fast, at the very least for me, to continually keep buying the very latest.
I might just decide to get the Note5. But - on an entirely different matter - I recently found out that the 50 GB Dropbox that Samsung proudly keep advertising everytime they present a new flagship(ish) device is actually a bag of hot air if you bought another device before I knew you´d only get the 50 (48 actually) GB once. I.e. not 48 GB per device. But at the very least i´d be able to extend the 48 Gigs. But Noo - no.
So at the moment i actually consider Sony next time.
Regards
Elo
Understand the frustration there but the purpose of the promotion is to bring users to Dropbox that eventually get hooked into having to pay. In their eyes once you are hooked you shouldn't be allowed to continously increase your free capacity using the sane promotion. Every giveaway has loss built in so allowing concurrent application of them surely can't be sustainable in terms of profit margins. Like I said I hear you, this is my second note pro since I lost my first. .. sucks. .

It's 50GB per dropbox account, once. You can, however, simply make a new account on dropbox. (That's what I do. I currently have 5.)
That is not something Samsung chose to do. It's Dropbox's doing.

Hi!
Your argument makes perfect sense. On the other hand: Samsung gets a benefit by increasing the value of their product as well.
It therefore struck me as logical that there had to be some sort of deal between Samsung and Dropbox. I.e. so many $ to Dropbox each time a unit is sold. If Dropbox gets an income per unit, i´d assume (yes - i know what is said about those) they´d also have to provide a service per unit.
Damn those assumptions

LOL You're right! Sadly they're silent on the fact that you can't continually apply the credit. Perhaps its there in fine print somewhere and I'm just too excited at each product purchase to see it . . in any case I'll buy the Note 4 sometime before the end of the year and I'll lose the ability to take full advantage of that offer. Oh well . . .I'm not about to go through the hassle of using multiple dropbox accounts.
I wish Dropbox would match Google's pricing (I actually use both but reserve Google Drive for collaborating with others whereas Dropbox I use for myself and family) across the entire range of options. Would be nice to have a $2/mo 100GB option. I really don't need 1TB of space.
Back on topic though the Note 4 Edge looks interesting too. I'm concerned though that Samsung put the curved screen on the wrong product. Having never had a Note/Note 2/Note 3 I cant say for sure so I ask those of you who have - do you think its going to be hard to avoid touching the icons and menus on the curved edge while gripping the phone and doing other things?

Happy to help!
It's such a shame to forgo a great device (As the N5 will uncountably be 64Bit and 4G) because of corporate stupidity. Good thing there's usually a way to bypass it.

Well - i´m left handed and use a bumper on my N3. Being somewhat of a klutz i have to protect my device. I couldn´t hold the N4E without almost constantly being in physical contact with the curved edge. The curved edge is on the right side of the phone and looks like an ergonomic nightmare for us "leftys".
For a right handed person your right thumb looks, to me, like the "intended digit". Then you´d have to hold the device between your other 4 fingers and the root of your thumb/edge of your palm. Seems to me it´d be very nearly impossible to avoid touching along the edge. This needs to be tested IRL the phone shape is IMHO just too special to extrapolate or assume (Insert scared whine here) anything.
Edit: And speaking of bumpers - will they even be possible?

Yeah my first impression of the edge was it's too bad the S5 didn't have a variant of that instead. The larger note size doesn't seem practical for the edge technology. Also it would be nice if earpiece speakers doubled as normal speakers, hard buttons on front were removed, microphones placed on all corners and an earpiece speaker on top and bottom. With this setup, use rotation sensor to detect orientation so that the proper earpiece gets sound when the phone is in use. Use proximity sensor to up speaker volume when paying media. It surprises me nobody does this, a phone that you can answer in either portrait orientation that also doesn't need speakers on the sides or back.

No thank you!
Not only will that cost us 10% screen space, it is also highly irritating if you use full-screen apps. The 'hide the notification bar' feature is already highly irritating. (Every time I try to bring it up in the middle of a video, the swipe is detected by the video player first and it changes the volume or brightness before opening the bar. UGH!)
I don't need more annoyances with on-screen buttons. The Nexus can keep those, cheers. Samsung made the decision to keep the hard buttons for a very well-considered list of reasons.
And no, they can't simply extend the screen. It's bound by aspect ratio. No, they can't add it as an additional bar on the screen either, it breaks the ratio in landscape mode.

All good reasons. I wonder if there's a way to get full use of the device in either orientation without those annoyances.
