AOSP ROM's

It's taken me quite sometime to realise how much superior AOSP ROM's are in comparison to Sammy based ROM's, i first flashed Supernexus out of curiosity a few weeks ago and was blown away by it's speed and smoothness far far better than Sammy ROM's in every respect, i then went onto Liquid Jellybean which was even better especially the battery life but with a few minor bugs and no update as of yet but im sure it'll come at some stage, now im on blackbean which uses the same base as Liquid JB and amazing stuff indeed, the speed and smoothness is unrivaled, with more development it will only get better.
Previously ive had superb ROM's like CheckRom, Android Revolution and Omega which are all excellent ROM's in their own individual way but i doubt ill ever go back to anything that isn't AOSP now unless some serious development happens which i wouldn't be surprised on XDA, so what type of ROM's do people prefer for their Galaxy S3?

Aosp ones are the best...
the only thing i wait is the official jb update so the aosp ones can get sources to built on and also to have the best sammy ones(comparable to aosp since it's jb) ever!
But until then,aosp all the way...

I used to have a Captivate and ran only AOSP/CM/AOKP roms. I still have it (use it as an mp3 player) and it's awesome.
No on my i9300, I'm using Omega v11. I tried SuperNexus Build 1 and tried a couple of AOSP based rom. I haven't tried later JB roms because I'm concerned with the memory leaks and lack of tv out and stuff like that. The main difference I found is the camera. The Samsung Camera app is very, very good. It is, flat out, superior to the ICS/JB Camera app. Allshare, FM Radio, TV Out, seem usually to be unsupported on AOSP roms (please correct me if I'm wrong).
I think AOSP (and variants) roms are very good. UI is sleaker and they might be a bit more responsive, but I could appreciate a greater difference when I had a Galaxy S with a half baked Touchwiz on it that with the complete monster the i9300 is with a thought out, 3rd or 4th generation Touchwiz. I still use Nova Launcher, because it looks better to me, but I love Smart Stay, TV out is absurdly useful to play n64 games or so with an emulator and a ps3 controller and again, the camera.
I might go back to AOSP roms. I've been looking for a good theme for stock roms, but haven't found one that actually replicates the feeling. However, functionality wise, I think Samsung's Roms are superior.

Excellent thread....Aosp are very responsive and pretty slick....you can feel the new all the advantages of JB.....but as said by monoespacial, the tricks in TW such as smart stay and others are very useful...it'll will be great if one of our outstanding developers in this forum can bake a Rom based on Aosp JB including all the mentionned tweaks.......excellent forum and wonderful community.....thanks.

I've had two nexus phones so I love aosp, it's android perfection.
In saying that, I've found myself flashing Cm10 or supernexus or liquid because I was sick of tw but after a day or two I get sick of them, I always end up going back to tw roms, especially since the JB leaks, the latest one is near perfection.
Tw JB roms COMPLETELY de-bloated are pretty damn smooth and fast, right now I see no need for aosp roms.
There are too many handy features in the tw roms.

yeah
they are simple and fast, and can install kernel with oveclock
but:
-no wifi tethering (its important to me)
-some FC
-inferior camera app
-without some features, like smart stay, etc ...

I agree!! Those AOSP or AOKP are excellent in terms of speed and smooth-ness. It also somehow integrate to the Google products better. However, they are often very simple interface with nothing much..
Too bad at this moment, there are still bugs that can't be fixed.
In the future, I will just go and get the original Google Nexus phone... You'll get the latest update first hand and there are less bloatware installed

Haven't tried other AOSP rom except CM. Can't wait for memory leak fix on CM10

aosp is fast and slick , i love it but there is no denying the fact samsung has improved the quality of their roms for s3..... aosp vs stock is always been a debatable question where aosp always wins. but with galaxy s3 roms samsung has progressed one step higher.
at the end of the day not only the speed that matters but also the releaibility and functionality...
advatanges of aosp:
* Your mobile is fast and clean.
* More room for multitasking with more memory available.
* Wide variety of themes to choose from.
* aokp and derivative of aosp roms are simply amazing
disadvantages:
* it just makes your s3 like any other mobile that runs aosp. No device specific functions.
* Inferior camera.
* you will never get some features .

I agree! I started off my rom flashing on a milestone2 and when I got cm7 on it for the first time, I was in love with it. Then I got a g2x which was stock gb all the way too.
Finally I get this sg3 which was a must have and wow, I have used cm 9,10, every other aosp and aokp rom but stock again has more stuff u can't get from others.
I adw, Nova, launcher pro but I just tw all the way. Suits my needs.
I guess the best thing about it is, we could always change it when need be!

I do like the AOSP / AOKP etc. roms due to their speed, clean base and an intuitive user interface, but some bad things keep me from going to them.
Annoying bugs:
More FC's
Bluetooth works bad with A2DP headphones - choppy sound, interruption etc.
Native USB Tither doesn't work
Overheating compared to stock roms
Some cool things missing from stock roms such as superior camera, video call, smart stay etc.
A lot of minor bugs

Just to respond to some posts (good replies by the way)some people mentioned an inferior camera, a third party camera app like Camera ZoomFX does the job nicely and is one of the best IMO.
I rarely use WiFi tethering although ill probably be using it for 1 week next week while i wait to change broadband providers, there ar emany third party apps that im sure will do the job there.
If some TW features could be implemented into AOSP it would be a win win situation, but with the speed and responsiveness and battery life so good im staying put, much and all as i like ROM's like CheckRom and Android Revolution (2 of the best Sammy based ROM's IMO) but after having AOSP on the dog and bone i couldn't go back.

true, it would be nice to have new touchwiz features in cmx btw whatever the 3rd party app you use you cant get near to the stock camera app which has fetures like hdr,buddy share and more and adding to the arsenal jb update brings "pause while recording" feature to the camera app. BUt sadly its the price we have to pay for the luxury of aosp

Yeah, I was blown away at the speed of AOSP, the one major disadvantage(in my eyes) is the current memory leak present.
I'm sure that in due time, the AOSP camera will get all those features present on the Sammy camera.
I guess the thing I miss the most from the Sammy ROM was the swipe left to message and swipe right to call. Very useful feature IMO.

So far no one wants to deal with the Exynos 5 version isn't been lacking resources for ages now and samsung drove them off by keeping documents in private.
lets see perhaps another developer gets an intrest in the I9500 model and tries building a CM rom based on it....
some devs are doing great stuff with the stock ROM and they keep the device alive, so we will keep being petiance.

CM will be pretty useless on the S4 though. Even If it were made available, the drivers for the S4#s sensors are closed-source, so you would be cutting functionality by 40%. No IR blaster is a no go. Also, CM interface is outdated. Im all honesty TouchWizz has caught up with CM (Notification bar toggles, quickly scalable auto-brightness), so a slim TouchWizz will just be more functional. Just change the launcher and theme and you have a CM experience.
CM nostalgia is fine but not at the expense of functionality (at least for me).

I totally agree with you, for all i know we all bought this device not for its 8 core proccessor, but its fantastic features such as: MultiWindow, IR Blaster, Air Gestures, Unique sensors... and a pretty good CAM. if someone wanted this just to install CM will bad news he should have got a nexus.
who cares TW is fantastic some guys are *****ing about it will we have the gret Themers around they did some nice things lately though i think stock look is awesome lovely colors and eye relaxing its the reason they choose them and even if the brightness is a little down you are still able to see the button... after all GS4 had a great awaitting some were disappointed cause they wished and expected too much and others are flying around with it and loving each moment. iam on the second group after comming for the Note 1 i can say its the perfect replacment for me, good battery, a real great screen (not only HD but the size is like the best you can wish for a device this size), and features will you name it anything that samsung had in the past or thought for the future is installed a handy device and i believe lacks nothing we used to say Samsung releases devices with outdated Android version will 4.2.2 is the latest and smooooooth i can say for sure

I just changed to Trebuchet Launcher (because I love the zoom transition and it has more space for apps) and Chronus Clock (as a replacement for TW weather+clock) and I am really happy about it now.
I even put the AOSP browser, which is a bit faster (and brighter) than the Stock Browser (AOSP Browser installer from Google Play).
I also put EX Dialer for Phone and Contacts. And that's the best experience currently available.
The main case for CM10.1 is to have a pure Android experience that is "compatible", but in all honesty, I have no compatibility issues with TW. I use the slim version of it, so it is not bloated anymore. The only compelling reason would be extreme performance boost and fluidity, but I won't sacrifice the remote control and other functionality for it!
If Samsung does not release open source drivers with the Google edition, then we won't see CM10.1 evolve toward decent functionality I am afraid.

Hello.
I'm in the mood for some discussion. Currently waging which rom to install on my note 2, TouchWiz or latest android (4.3). How would you people rate a 4.1.2 rom built on correct sources against the latest version of Android? Performance, battery and user friendly wise.

I think I know where your going with this but it might turn into something bad. Like comparing roms I think is against the rules.
Comparing Touchwhiz to AOSP usually depends on the needs of user.
I prefer TW than AOSP for the note because if the note 2 pen and camera but hey to each their own!

Which ROM even has 4.3 on the Note 2? CM? I've looked around a little bit but haven't really seen much information in regards to that.

Yeah that's comparing ROms.
stock vs aosp. Then you will ask which one.
It's better to try on your own.
For Me stock odexed rooted with a lot of bloatware removed works the best

There's not really a lot to discuss because the differences from 4.1>4.2>4.3 really aren't that earth shattering. Especially when you factor in Samsung's s/w modifications. Of the three, 4.1 is considered the most stable with 4.2 having a bunch of issues; some being corrected with 4.2.2 and others not (BT). 4.3 corrects the BT issue which Samsung had already fixed by using their own BT s/w in their 4.2.X ROMs.
Here's a summary of a great 4.1<>4.2 comparison done by Android Authority. A lot of what they are describing doesn't really affect TW-based devices and is more aimed at Nexi users.
So many of the goodies that you love from Android 4.1 Jelly Bean have been carried over to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Most of the stock apps and widgets are similar in both Android versions. To the eyes, there’s no big change in Android 4.2 at all. But, some new significant features and some minor alterations make Android 4.2 sweeter and fun. Here is a brief list of new features from Android 4.2 Jelly Bean:
Support for multiple users (for Android tablets)
Multiple lockscreen pages with widgets Wireless display
Revamped Camera app Photo Sphere HDR Mode (for supported devices)

4.1 is as solid as a rock on the N2 and the new features in 4.2/4.3 are either not that significant or wouldn't apply to a TW-enabled device. I'm looking forward to 4.2/4.3 (supposedly Samsung's skipping 4.2) coming to the N2 primarily to get some of Samsung's "S" additions that were introduced on the SGS4. But I’ll probably get a N3 which will most likely be on 4.3 before the N2 gets upgraded. Of the native Google features the one I'm most interested in is the more flexible lock screen with widget capabilities. Now that Android is mature the days of radically new versions coming out multiple times a year are pretty much over. 4.1 was introduced in June 2012 and here it is August 2013 and the evolution across 4.1/4.2/4.3 is pretty minor.

Some like the Touchwiz functionalities and it supports multi window and s- features. AOSP has other stuffs. basically depends on what u want and what you like

Well I just flashed cm10.1 nightlies and found it super smooth and very well bare for the most part.
Like it felt stripped to the core but super fast and there was no real complaint on my part. You end up with more memory to use and of course it's almost pure stock android with some tweaks. I especially like the blue halo theme!
Now back to Touchwhiz I found myself loving it more than AOSP mainly for this device.
Having s pen related apps and gestures makes it an easy choice. We have pop note and other goodies from the pen.
Air gesture and even without the pen we have built in features like multiwindow and a much better camera experience.
Over all I think when we get 4.3 Touchwhiz, most of the other than users of aosp will switch!

I like the ProBam ROM, the s-pen features work and it has lots of free RAM. with all apps running the ram usage is around 1.2gb used

Can't say I tried ROMs for Samsung, but while I had HTC I did flash a lot - since DHD wasn't getting JB and I experimented a lot with JB ROMS. IMHO, all the "smoothest experience" stuff and how this ROM is better than the other is ONLY due to the fact that when you flash it - your phone is EMPTY. This is also the fact when we buy our phones and we go ooooohh and aaaahhh, how smooth it is. Then, after few months, we fill 'em up with al sorts of widgets and background running processes and they're not so smooth anymore. IMHO, no matter what ROM you use, the performance will always be the same, no matter what. OK, it might be slightly better or worse, but so little that you won't be able to tell. That's why I use stock ROM, since it has most functionality. I just know ANY ROM will be slow after x months of use....

Well that's why when I flash a new ROM. I wait a day after to determine the speed and stability.
Anyone can say this or that about a ROM or system but in the end its about the user. And I use my device like no other. So performance and stability are the main factors for me!!

I'm also a big fan of stock, rooted. Custom roms are fun and all yet there are times where you will hit issues because the Dev made a mistake or a change inadvertently affected something else. In my experience the improvements in battery life are negligible at best and at the end of the day I need my phone to be reliable. My latest experience with a custom rom has me with a phone which won't wake from deep sleep if I put it in airplane mode. I'm just waiting to get back home from a business trip and then the first thing I'll be doing is reverting my phone to stock. The last thing I need is a phone which randomly dies in my when I'm away from my laptop and regular access to a high speed Internet connection. These days I'm able to travel light. Besides clothes a note 2 and a note 8 are all I need to get things done but they must be reliable above all else.

If you have been on 4.2.2 on an S4 u would not expect to see much other differences on the android front except added security. Whatever goodies samsung adds to the note 3 I would expect to see on the note two update. Therefore we will know nothing until September October.

I'm running unofficial Cyanogenmod 4.3 on my N7105 and must say it's suprisingly stable. Of course there is a long way to go before it can serve as a daily driver, but it's amazing these guys can do so much in such a short time.

Apart some issues with camera , the cm 10.2 is really smooth and battery life is very ok for me.

Welcome to XDA.
I suggest you enter the development section and do like most of us - flash like a maniac until you find a ROM that suits your needs, looks the way you want, feels the way you want.
Still, let me sum it up. These are the main categories of ROMs for our beloved N9005:
1. TouchWiz ROMs.
Those are ROMs based on the official firmware that Samsung released for our phones. They keep between most and all features and apps that are originally offered by Samsung, and then some extras like even better battery life, slightly better camera shots with higher quality, to some small extent they're themed.
tl;dr
Pros:
+ Stable.
+ Good battery life.
+ All the functionality is kept.
Cons:
- In my opinion, while quite functional, TouchWiz is ugly as hell.
- Can be somewhat laggy at times.
- You can't mod as much as you want to.
2. AOSP ROMs.?
Those are ROMs based on the Android Open Source Project. Basically, these ROMs turn your device into a Nexus device and strive to bring the pure Android experience. Those ROMs are fast as hell, responsive, and very, VERY easily modified. On the other hand, those are ROMs made by enthusiasts, in some cases professional developers. Still, ROMs that are made from the ground up, and are largely still works in progress.
tl;dr
Pros:
+ Your phone running an AOSP ROM will be way faster than TouchWiz.
+ NO bloatware. I mean, all that Samsung bulls**t like ChatOn, Samsung Hub/Apps/Link/Group Play/Trip Advisor and some 20 others are NOT present on AOSP ROMs.
+ Much more open to modifications, including the way even non-system apps look. Like, you can have a dark themed Facebook and Instagram and whatever you use.
Cons:
- Battery life on those ROMs is generally not as good as on TouchWiz.
- While the phone is way faster, the camera experience is also not as good as on TouchWiz. The camera starts quite slowly and while the shots it takes are not bad, those taken on TouchWiz are visibly better.
- Like I said above, those ROMs are works in progress and may have bugs and while most of them are with status Stable by now and most major bugs are not present anymore, there might still be some annoyances.
3. Ported ROMs.
Those are ROMs based on firmwares originally made for other devices, in our case mostly other Samsung devices. The Note 4 (soon Note 5) and S6 have functionality not present even on stock ROMs, like the Galaxy S6's Theme Store. Still, ROMs that are made from the ground up, and are largely still works in progress.

+ Your phone running an AOSP ROM will be way faster than TouchWiz.
+ NO bloatware. I mean, all that Samsung bulls**t like ChatOn, Samsung Hub/Apps/Link/Group Play/Trip Advisor and some 20 others are NOT present on AOSP ROMs.
+ Much more open to modifications, including the way even non-system apps look. Like, you can have a dark themed Facebook and Instagram and whatever you use.
Cons:
- Battery life on those ROMs is generally not as good as on TouchWiz.
- While the phone is way faster, the camera experience is also not as good as on TouchWiz. The camera starts quite slowly and while the shots it takes are not bad, those taken on TouchWiz are visibly better.
- Like I said above, those ROMs are works in progress and may have bugs and while most of them are with status Stable by now and most major bugs are not present anymore, there might still be some annoyances.
3. Ported ROMs.
Those are ROMs based on firmwares originally made for other devices, in our case mostly other Samsung devices. No Spen for 5.1.1 [HLTE/TMO/SPR/VZW][ROM][CM12.1][5.1.1_r26] Temasek's UNOFFICIAL

Hi everybody
After flashing rom 5.1.1 from [HLTE/TMO/SPR/VZW][ROM][CM12.1][5.1.1_r26] Temasek's UNOFFICIAL Build v18.4, i can't find anything relates s pen, s note, air command. It means that i can use s pen function. Can anyone tell me : does 5.1.1 support s pen?

no you can't use spen with cm roms, you may need to download third party apps or any mods, like trying to install moded spen air command.

He thought maybe Samsung made cm.

Support? Yes and No. Cyanogen Mod supports S Pen with some apps, honestly I have no interest about CM and stuffs, but you can ask on that particular ROM's thread which apps you might use as replacement to S Note and all that. And by no I mean the integration is nowhere near as flawless as it is on TouchWiz based ROMs, but then again that's quite normal.

Let me explain.
The official firmware made by Samsung is called TouchWiz, and there are ROMs based on it, and all of the functionality of the device is kept by flashing such a ROM.
Downsides: as much as the developers here making TouchWiz ROMs are trying, TouchWiz' innate lag is close to impossible to deal with, and people who cannot simply stomach that, flash AOSP ROMs.
AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project: code provided by Google themselves, which allows developers to create a ROM based off pure Android.
Which means that when you flash an AOSP ROM (Cyanogenmod, Tema's version of CM, Resurrection Remix, Slim, etc.), you are flashing a ROM that basically turns your device into a Nexus.
Nexus phones don't have S-Pen.
Pure Android doesn't support it.
Anything you found on TouchWiz as functionality CAN be achieved to some extent on an AOSP ROM by flashing various mods and installing apps and frameworks and whatnot, but it will not work as well as on TouchWiz.
So my suggestion is that if you use S-Pen regularly, you will want it with it's full functionality, and for that you find a TouchWiz based ROM, we have a couple of good ones. AryaMod, Audax, various ports of the Note 4 and Note 5...
If you go AOSP on the other hand, your phone will be A LOT faster and more responsive, but you will find a hard time restoring some S-Pen functionality with it.

Yeah, well let me state some FACTS here as well, in case some amateur completely misses the main flaw in the above post.
Yes, TouchWiz lags, that's beyond any question, but who said flashing a Cyanogen ROM turns your device to a Nexus phone? That's beyond ridiculous! AOSP is great, fast, stable, as good as Android could and should be. But Cyanogen isn't that! It's based on AOSP, but with plenty of bugs, and not tiny bugs either. I don't have any time or interest about pointing them out, but just Googling will reveal them.
A Nexus is a Nexus, which runs on naked Android without any sort of customisation whatsoever, which is called AOSP. A Cyanogen port can never have same stability or bug free nature like a AOSP ROM, N E V E R. Now I honestly don't care if some troll or fanboy comes and say there are no bugs, well that's as usual hilarious. You have to have use a stable and bug free thing first to notice or comment on which are bug free, which are not, LOL!
This is the actual sum up:
TouchWiz: Stable, slow, laggy sometimes (when people say the lag is impossible to bear, well that's when you should find your dictionary and look up for the word 'exaggerate'), but with every feature possible, needless to say S Pen integration is excellent.
Cyanogen mod/ or any AOSP port: Turn your Note 3 to something other than Note 3. ROM will be faster than TouchWiz, but again, it's not that fast that it would make a world's difference, and you lose all the Samsung features, and some of them are quite important ones, and there are bugs, some of them are quite important as well, like poor call quality or degraded photo/ video quality! But then again there will always be people who don't call form their "mobile phone" or snap any photos, and then there is the S Pen. But look at the bright side, you can now scratch your ear with it.
At the same time, I would prefer if Samsung moves to clean Android like Motorola or Sony, keeping some of their useful apps like S Note, Messaging an Dialler app etc., cause there is no real point of having a totally heavy kinda skin on top of Android when the main Android is pretty good itself. They can add a bunch of apps, they don't necessarily need to add a whole framework for that.
